Abstract:We analyze the problem of blackbody radiation in the presence of quantum gravity effects encoded in modified dispersion relations. In this context, the spectral radiance and the generalized Stefan-Boltzmann law are studied. Furthermore, the regime of low temperatures is contemplated as well, where features related to the blackbody thermal laws and the thermodynamics quantities such as energy, pressure, entropy, and specific heat are obtained. Possible implications in compact objects such as neutron stars are also discussed.

The evolution of radiation towards thermal equilibrium: A soluble model which illustrates the foundations of Statistical Mechanics

Abstract:In 1916 Einstein introduced the first rules for a quantum theory of electromagnetic radiation, and he applied them to a model of matter in thermal equilibrium with radiation to derive Planck's black-body formula. Einstein's treatment is extended here to time-dependent stochastic variables, which leads to a master equation for the probability distribution that describes the irreversible approach of Einstein's model towards thermal equilibrium, and elucidates aspects of the foundation of statistical mechanics. An analytic solution of this equation is obtained in the Fokker-Planck approximation which is in excellent agreement with numerical results. At equilibrium, it is shown that the probability distribution is proportional to the total number of microstates for a given configuration, in accordance with Boltzmann's fundamental postulate of equal a priori probabilities for these states. While the counting of these configurations depends on particle statistics- Boltzmann, Bose-Einstein, or Fermi-Dirac - the corresponding probability is determined here by the dynamics which are embodied in the form of Einstein's quantum transition probabilities for the emission and absorption of radiation. In a special limit, it is shown that the photons in Einstein's model can act as a thermal bath for the evolution of the atoms towards the canonical equilibrium distribution of Gibbs. In this limit, the present model is mathematically equivalent to an extended version of the Ehrenfests' ``dog-flea'' model, which has been discussed recently by Ambegaokar and Clerk.

Abstract:Quantization of the electromagnetic field (called quantum electromagnetics here) has been a fascinating and important subject since its introduction by Dirac in 1927. However, this knowledge is often inaccessible to technologists such as engineers. This subject will be discussed in its simplest terms so that it can be easily understood by a larger community of researchers. To this end, a new way of motivating Hamiltonian mechanics is presented. Furthermore, a novel way of deriving the quantum equations of motion for electromagnetics and Maxwell's equations is presented.

Noncommutative Derivation of the Planck's Radiation Law

Abstract:The Planck's radiation law for the blackbody radiation spectrum was capable to explain the experimentally-measured blackbody spectrum. In order to get this result, Planck proposed his radiation law in a two-fold way: 1) by an \textit{ad hoc} modification of the assumed connection between energy and entropy for thermal radiation; 2) by assuming that the calculation of the entropy of an oscillator in thermal equilibrium with radiation is carried out by discrete units of energy. As a consequence, the energy quantization, linear in frequency, was thus introduced into physics. However, the energy quantization of the simple harmonic oscillator was originally postulated by Planck in an incomplete way, i.e., the ground state energy was not assumed to be null. Of course, this issue has been solved in different ways over time. Despite of this, we propose an alternative way to fix this issue by describing harmonic oscillators at noncommutative(NC) framework, where the non-null ground state energy naturally arises as a NC contribution. With this approach, the Planck's quantum theory is updated and, consequently, becomes compatible with the quantum mechanics inaugurated in 1925.

Abstract:Planck's law for black-body radiation marks the origin of quantum theory and is discussed in all introductory (or advanced) courses on this subject. However, the question whether Planck really implied quantisation is debated among historians of physics. We present a simplified account of this debate which also sheds light on the issue of indistinguishability and Einstein's light quantum hypothesis. We suggest that the teaching of quantum mechanics could benefit from including this material beyond the question of historical accuracy.

Abstract:Fluctuation and Noise Letters, Ahead of Print. Stefan–Boltzmann law, stating the fourth power temperature dependence of the radiation emission by a black-body, was empirically formulated by Stefan in 1874 by fitting existing experiments and theoretically validated by Boltzmann in 1884 on the basis of a classical physical model involving thermodynamics principles and the radiation pressure predicted by Maxwell equations. At first sight the electromagnetic (EM) gas assumed by Boltzmann and following Rayleigh (1900) identifiable as an ensemble of N classical normal-modes, looks like an extension of the classical model of the massive ideal-gas. Accordingly, for this EM gas the internal total energy, U, was assumed to be function of volume V and temperature T as [math], and the equation of state was given by [math], with P the radiation pressure. In addition, Boltzmann implicitly assumed that, for given values of V and T, U and the number of modes N would take finite values. However, from one hand these assumptions are not justified by Maxwell equations and classical statistics since, in vacuum (i.e., far from the EM sources), the values of N and U diverge, the so-called ultraviolet catastrophe introduced by Ehrenfest in 1911. From another hand, Boltzmann derivation of Stefan law is found to be macroscopically compatible with its derivation from quantum statistics announced by Planck in 1901. In this paper, we present a justification of this puzzling classical/quantum compatibility by noticing that the implicit assumptions made by Boltzmann is fully justified by Planck quantum statistics. Furthermore, we shed new light on the interpretation of recent classical simulations of a black body carried out by Wang, Casati, and Benenti in 2022 who found an analogous puzzling consistency between Stefan–Boltzmann law and their simulations to induce speculations on classical physics and black body radiation that are claimed to require a critical reconsideration of the role of classical physics for the understanding of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:We study the blackbody properties and the thermodynamic equilibrium quantities of a photon gas in the framework of nonlinear electrodynamics. In this vein, we take into account the photon propagation in a uniform external magnetic field in the weak field approximation, where an angular anisotropic energy density distribution appears in the frequency spectrum. The particular case when the photon propagates perpendicular to the background magnetic field is also discussed, which allows us to probe the strong field regime. We then derive a modified blackbody spectral distribution and the Stefan-Boltzmann law in this situation. Considerations about Wien's displacement law and the Rayleigh-Jeans formula are contemplated as well. Deviations from the thermodynamic quantities at thermal equilibrium such as energy, pressure, entropy, and heat capacity densities are obtained from the Helmholtz free energy. As an application, we study three nonlinear electrodynamics, namely, the Euler-Heisenberg, the generalized Born-Infeld, and the logarithmic electrodynamics. Possible implications on stellar systems with strong magnetic fields such as magnetars are discussed.

Abstract:The blackbody radiation equation, also known as the Planck equation, has proved to be a challenge for students starting their studies in the field of thermal radiation, and this article aims to overcome this difficulty by presenting it in a simplified way. First, the classical approach to the blackbody derivation performed by the scientist Max Planck will be presented, which uses the concept of entropy, related to the different forms of energy distribution, in a thermodynamic system, complexion, according to Planck. Next, the deduction of the blackbody equation is presented, without resorting to complex calculations, but rather simple ones, from the approach carried out by Richard Feynman. Therefore, the objective of this article is to present the blackbody radiation equation, using basic concepts of average energy, and how the equation can be deduced from simple numerical calculations, without losing sight of the phenomenological character.

Abstract:It has been known for some time that the classical concept of radiation is not covariant: for uniformly accelerated particles, it depends on the state of motion of the observer relative to the particle emitting it. Moreover, recent literature in the field of Quantum Field Theory in Curved Spacetimes suggests a deep connection between bremsstrahlung and the Unruh effect, where zero-Rindler energy particles have played a central role beyond constructing the radiation contents of systems; as this is an unfamiliar concept, it seems unsettling to deal with particles having no energy. This thesis studies such a connection in both the classical and quantum perspectives, showing how the quantum Unruh effect is responsible for the classical radiation detected for the electric and gravitational cases, and studies the role of zero-Rindler-energy particles and how they relate to the radiative field of uniformly accelerated particles.

Abstract:Black holes are the elementary particles of gravity, the final state of sufficiently massive stars and of energetic collisions. With a forty-year long history, black hole physics is a fully-blossomed field which promises to embrace several branches of theoretical physics. Here I review the main developments in highly dynamical black holes with an emphasis on high energy black hole collisions and probes of particle physics via superradiance. This write-up, rather than being a collection of well known results, is intended to highlight open issues and the most intriguing results.

Abstract:We give an exact information-theory treatment of the $n$-dimensional black-body radiation process in a non-extensive scenario. We develop a $q$ generalization of the laws of i) Stefan Boltzmann, ii) Planck, and iii) Wien, and show that conventional, canonical results are obtained at temperatures above $1 K$. Classical relationships between radiation, pressure, and internal energy are recovered (independently of the $q$-value). Analyzing the particles' density for $q\approx 1$ we see that the non-extensive parameter $q$ introduces a fictitious chemical potential. We apply our results to experimental data on the cosmic microwave background and reproduce it with acceptable accuracy for different temperatures (each one associated to a particular $q$ value

Abstract:On December 14. 1900, Max Planck communicated his derivation of his radiation formula, which he later called ``an act of desperation''. This date is widely recognized as birthday of quantum theory. For Planck it meant the end of his carefully planned and ambitious research project, in which he wanted to establish the second law of thermodynamics as strictly deterministic law for systems of matter and electromagnetic radiation in interaction. He knew he could not succeed within classical mechanics, but had the somewhat strange hope that the inclusion of Maxwell's electrodynamics would change the situation. Later he always disagreed with Einstein's light-quantum hypothesis, because it implied a renunciation from Maxwell's theory, which in Germany gained full recognition and acceptance as late as the 1890's, mainly through the theoretical and experimental work of Heinrich Hertz.

Abstract:A photon, according to modern quantum field theory, is a minimal change in the wave function for the electromagnetic field or, less formally, in the probability distribution for what detectors of electromagnetic radiation will sense. Here I explain that strange formulation, by building up to it through the general concept of quantum censorship. From this perspective, the resolution of blackbody radiation catastrophe has much in common with Feynman’s theory of superfluid He. The resolution, in quantum theory, of the ultraviolet catastrophe of black-body radiation theory can be viewed in various ways. Here I discuss it as a manifestation of quantum censorship – that is, lifting of energy degeneracy among classical modes through their re-organization into coherent superpositions. The difficulty of classical physics that initiated the quantum revolution was its (catastrophic) prediction of infinite energy for blackbody radiation at any non-zero temperature. The catastrophe arises because of the great abundance of high-frequency modes. In thermal equilibrium the average amplitudes for these modes are small, individually, but add up to infinite energy, contrary to observation. It is interesting to revisit that problem, in those concrete terms, in the context of modern, mature quantum theory. Of course, there is no question of deriving essentially new results for this old problem, but it can be entertaining to view things from different points of view, and it may turn out that doing so develops intuition that will prove

Abstract:This paper is a study of the electromagnetic radiation at temperature $T$ in a thin slab whose walls are made of a perfect conductor. The two large parallel walls of area $A$ are apart by a distance $d\ll \sqrt{A}$. We take $T$, $A$, and $d$ as thermodynamic parameters, obtaining the free energy from a procedure that involves the integration over the slab of the ensemble average of the stress-energy-momentum tensor calculated long ago by Brown and Maclay. Both thermodynamic regimes $kTd/\hbar c\gg 1$ and $kTd/\hbar c\ll 1$ are fully addressed. We show that certain thermodynamic quantities which are notoriously ill defined (or trivial) in ordinary blackbody thermodynamics are now well defined (or nontrivial) due to presence of boundary conditions at the walls of the slab ("Casimir's effect"). The relationships among such quantities are fully explored and it is speculated that they may be experimentally checked. Stability is addressed, showing that electromagnetic radiation in the slab is thermally stable; but mechanically unstable. We investigate thermodynamic processes where temperature, internal energy, entropy and enthalpy are each taken to be constant, revealing rather atypical behaviors. For example, in sharp contrast with what one would expect from a gas, when $kTd/\hbar c\ll 1$, "free expansion" gives place to "free contraction'' in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics. As a check of consistency of the formulae we remark that various Carnot cycles have been examined and verified that they correctly lead to Carnot's efficiency.

Abstract:Theoretical analyses of radiation pressure and photon momentum in the past 150 years have focused almost exclusively on classical and/or quantum theories of electrodynamics. In these analyses, Maxwell's equations, the properties of polarizable and/or magnetizable material media, and the stress tensors of Maxwell, Abraham, Minkowski, Chu, and Einstein-Laub have typically played prominent roles. Each stress tensor has subsequently been manipulated to yield its own expressions for the electromagnetic (EM) force, torque, energy, and linear as well as angular momentum densities of the EM field. This paper presents an alternative view of radiation pressure from the perspective of thermal physics, invoking the properties of blackbody radiation in conjunction with empty as well as gas-filled cavities that contain EM energy in thermal equilibrium with the container's walls. In this type of analysis, Planck's quantum hypothesis, the spectral distribution of the trapped radiation, the entropy of the photon gas, and Einstein's A and B coefficients play central roles.

Abstract:The old quantum theory of black body radiation was manifestly logically inconsistent. It required the energies of electric resonators to be both quantized and continuous. To show that this manifest inconsistency was inessential to the theory's recovery of the Planck distribution law, I extract a subtheory free of this manifest inconsistency but from which Planck's law still follows.

Abstract:Planck's introduction of the quantum of action in 1900 was followed by 25 years of trial and error in quest of the understanding of the quantum world; different ideas and directions had to be pursued until the path leading to the elementary quantum theory was discovered. Radical changes away from traditional perceptions about natural phenomena were necessary, the entire system of basic concepts in classical physics had to be abandoned and replaced by a new mode of thought. Continuity and determinism of classical laws were no longer applicable on the quantum scale, where dynamical behaviour proceeds by discontinuous and statistical quantum transitions. Albert Einstein laid the essential foundations for the new concept; Max Born made the decisive step further leading to the breakthrough in 1925. The development of the ideas, which eventually resulted in the elementary quantum theory in 1925/26, will be described, relying on original publications and letters written during that period in time by the major contributors. The fundamental laws of Quantum Theory derived by Max Born and Pascual Jordan may mathematically be represented in many different ways, and particular emphasis is given to the distinction between physical content and mathematical representation.

Abstract:In physics textbooks, the emphasis is normally placed on the physics. In order to give the subject a deeper dimension, the inclusion of history and persons involved in the development has been increasing. However, the actual historical development does not always follow a linear progression, which is the way the physics is presented in textbooks. In order to study how the inclusion of “history” has influenced the presentation, a study of the development of a well-known history in different editions of a physics textbook is done. The gradual development of a quasi-history is observed and possible explanations for this are investigated.

Abstract:It is very common to introduce quantum physics in an historical context. Though there are advantages to this, it is a problem that many of the stories that have become central to the physics lore are mere pseudo-histories far detached from the real events. It is about time that we stop uncritically copying these stories and instead make an effort to present the development of quantum physics as it actually was. This paper deals with one of the most common myths in quantum history, the one about the ultraviolet catastrophe and how it motivated Planck's introduction of quantum physics. On closer inspection it turns out this story has the time-line completely turned on its head. The ultraviolet catastrophe was first discussed several years after Planck published his radiation law so it played no role in his motivation. Instead Planck was concerned with finding a theoretical derivation of the law for blackbody radiation. This law was first thought to be Wien's radiation law, but when new data disagreed, Planck came up with his own law that fitted the data. Planck's radiation law first came about as an elaborate fit to data and to derive it he found no other way than to use statistical mechanics and divide the energy that was to be distributed on the atomic oscillators into packages $hf$ so that he could count the number of ways to distribute this energy. Planck did not consider this a quantization, but merely a mathematical trick to be able to calculate the entropy of the oscillators.
