Abstract:Given a chiral d-polytope K with regular facets, we describe a construction for a chiral (d + 1)-polytope P with facets isomorphic to K. Furthermore, P is finite whenever K is finite. We provide explicit examples of chiral 4-polytopes constructed in this way from chiral toroidal maps.

Abstract:Abstract polytopes are combinatorial objects that generalise geometric objects such as convex polytopes, maps on surfaces and tilings of the space. Chiral polytopes are those abstract polytopes that admit full combinatorial rotational symmetry but do not admit reflections. In this paper we build chiral polytopes whose facets (maximal faces) are isomorphic to a prescribed regular cubic tessellation of the $n$-dimensional torus ($n \geq 2$). As a consequence, we prove that for every $d \geq 3$ there exist infinitely many chiral $d$-polytopes.

Abstract:An abstract polytope of rank n is said to be chiral if its automorphism group has two orbits on the flags, such that adjacent flags belong to distinct orbits. Examples of chiral polytopes have been difficult to find. A "mixing" construction lets us combine polytopes to build new regular and chiral polytopes. By using the chirality group of a polytope, we are able to give simple criteria for when the mix of two polytopes is chiral.

Abstract:An abstract $n$-polytope $\mathcal{P}$ is a partially-ordered set which captures important properties of a geometric polytope, for any dimension $n$. For even $n \ge 2$, the incidences between elements in the middle two layers of the Hasse diagram of $\mathcal{P}$ give rise to the medial layer graph of $\mathcal{P}$, denoted by $\mathcal{G} = \mathcal{G}(\mathcal{P})$. If $n=4$, and $\mathcal{P}$ is both highly symmetric and self-dual of type $\{p,q,p\}$, then a Cayley graph $\mathcal{C}$ covering $\mathcal{G}$ can be constructed on a group of polarities of $\mathcal{P}$. In this paper we address some open questions about the relationship between $\mathcal{G}$ and $\mathcal{C}$ that were raised in a 2008 paper by Monson and Weiss, and describe some interesting examples of these graphs. In particular, we give the first known examples of improperly self-dual chiral polytopes of type $\{3,q,3\}$, which are also among the very few known examples of highly symmetric self-dual finite polytopes that do not admit a polarity. Also we show that if $p=3$ then $\mathcal{C}$ cannot have a higher degree of $s$-arc-transitivity than $\mathcal{G}$, and we present a family of regular $4$-polytopes of type $\{6,q,6\}$ for which the vertex-stabilisers in the automorphism group of $\mathcal{C}$ are larger than those for $\mathcal{G}$.

Veronese polytopes: Extending the framework of cyclic polytopes

Abstract:This article introduces the theory of Veronese polytopes, a broad generalisation of cyclic polytopes. These arise as convex hulls of points on curves with one or more connected components, obtained as the image of the rational normal curve in affine charts. We describe their facial structure by extending Gale's evenness condition, and provide a further combinatorial characterisation of facets via $\sigma$-parity alternating sequences. Notably, we establish a bijective correspondence between combinatorial types of Veronese polytopes and partitions of finite sets equipped with a cyclic order, called circular compositions. We show that, although the only Veronese $3$-polytopes are the cyclic $3$-polytopes and the octahedron, in general dimension they form a rich and diverse class including all combinatorial types of simplicial $d$-polytopes with at most $d+3$ vertices, the cross-polytope and particular stacked polytopes. In addition, we characterise which curves defining Veronese polytopes are $d$-order curves, and provide a closed formula for the number of facets of any Veronese polytope.

Abstract:Very recently, Galashin, Postnikov, and Williams introduced the notion of higher secondary polytopes, generalizing the secondary polytope of Gelfand, Kapranov, and Zelevinsky. Given an $n$-point configuration $\mathcal{A}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$, they define a family of convex $(n-d)$-dimensional polytopes $\widehat{\Sigma}_{1}, \ldots, \widehat{\Sigma}_{n-d}$. The $1$-skeletons of this family of polytopes are the flip graphs of certain combinatorial configurations which generalize triangulations of $\text{conv} \mathcal{A}$. We restrict our attention to $d=2$. First, we relate the $1$-skeleton of the Minkowski sum $\widehat{\Sigma}_{k} + \widehat{\Sigma}_{k-1}$ to the flip graph of "hypertriangulations" of the deleted $k$-sum of $\mathcal{A}$ when $\mathcal{A}$ consists of distinct points. Second, we compute the diameter of $\widehat{\Sigma}_{k}$ and $\widehat{\Sigma}_{k}+\widehat{\Sigma}_{k-1}$ for all $k$.
Gorenstein-Fano polytopes and compactifications of rank 2 polyptych lattices

Abstract:The notion of polyptych lattices, introduced by Escobar, Harada, and Manon, wraps the data of a collection of lattices related by piecewise-linear bijections together into a single semi-algebraic object, equipped with its own notions of convexity and polyhedra. The main purpose of this manuscript is to construct an explicit family of polyptych lattices, and to illustrate via explicit computations the abstract theory introduced by Escobar-Harada-Manon. Specifically, we first construct a family of rank-$2$ polyptych lattices $\mathcal{M}_s$ with $2$ charts, compute their space of points, and prove that they are full and self-dual. We then give a concrete sample computation of a point-convex hull in $\mathcal{M}_s \otimes \mathbb{R}$ to illustrate that convex geometry in the polyptych lattice setting can exhibit phenomena not seen in the classical situation. We also give multiple examples of $2$-dimensional ``chart-Gorenstein-Fano'' polytopes, which give rise to pairs of mutation-related $2$-dimensional (classical) Gorenstein-Fano polytopes. Finally, we produce detropicalizations $(\mathcal{A}_s, \mathfrak{v}_s)$ of $\mathcal{M}_s$, and in the case $s=1$ where the detropicalization is a UFD, and with respect to a certain choice of PL polytope $\mathcal{P}$, we give an explicit generators-and-relations presentation of the (finitely generated) Cox ring of the compactification $X_{\mathcal{A}_s}(\mathcal{P})$ of $\mathrm{Spec}(\mathcal{A}_s)$ with respect to $\mathcal{P}$.

Abstract:We describe constructions of extended formulations that establish a certain relaxed version of the Hirsch conjecture and prove that if there is a pivot rule for the simplex algorithm for which one can bound the number of steps by a polynomial in the diameter plus the number of facets of the polyhedron of feasible solutions then the general linear programming problem can be solved in strongly polynomial time.

Abstract:With the help of the theory of holomorphic and anti-holomorphic differentials, G. A. Jones [Chiral covers of hypermaps, Ars Math. Contemp. 8 (2015), 425-431] proved that every regular hypermap of a non-spherical type is covered by an infinite number of orientably-regular but chiral hypermaps of the same type. We present a different proof of the same result for regular maps, based on parallel products of maps and existence of chiral maps of a given hyperbolic type with a symmetric or an alternating automorphism group.

Chern Characteristics and Todd-Hirzebruch Identities for Transpolar Pairs of Toric Spaces

Abstract:Standard toric geometry methods used to construct Calabi-Yau varieties may be extended to complete intersections in non-Fano varieties encoded by star triangulating non-convex polytopes. Similarly, mirror symmetry is conjectured to hold in terms of a transpolar duality generalizing the original construction of Batyrev and Borisov. The associated mirror pairs naturally include certain flip-folded, multi-layered multihedral objects, inclusively named VEX multitopes, and a correspondingly generalized transpolar duality. These self-overlaying VEX multitopes, long since known in pre-symplectic geometry, are found to correspond to certain non-algebraic but smooth toric spaces with Chern classes that satisfy the standard Todd-Hirzebruch identities. The computation of diffeomorphism invariants, including characteristic submanifold intersection numbers, corroborates their recent inclusion in the connected web of Calabi-Yau spaces and associated string compactifications: They arise together with the standard (Fano/reflexive polytope) constructions, within deformation families of generalized complete intersections in products of projective spaces.

Internal and external duality in abstract polytopes

Abstract:We define an abstract regular polytope to be internally self-dual if its self-duality can be realized as one of its symmetries. This property has many interesting implications on the structure of the polytope, which we present here. Then, we construct many examples of internally self-dual polytopes. In particular, we show that there are internally self-dual regular polyhedra of each type $\{p, p\}$ for $p \geq 3$ and that there are both infinitely many internally self-dual and infinitely many externally self-dual polyhedra of type $\{p, p\}$ for $p$ even. We also show that there are internally self-dual polytopes in each rank, including a new family of polytopes that we construct here.

Abstract:In this paper we study the class of polytopes which can be obtained by taking the convex hull of some subset of the points $\{e_i-e_j \ \vert \ i \neq j\} \cup \{\pm e_i\}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, where $e_1,\dots,e_n$ is the standard basis of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Such a polytope can be encoded by a quiver $Q$ with vertices $V \subseteq \{v_1,\dots,v_n\} \cup \{\star\}$, where each edge $v_j\to v_i$ or $\star \to v_i$ or $v_i\to \star$ gives rise to the point $e_i-e_j$ or $e_i$ or $-e_i$, respectively; we denote the corresponding polytope as $\operatorname{Root}(Q)$. These polytopes have been studied extensively under names such as edge polytope and root polytope. We show that if the quiver $Q$ is strongly-connected then the root polytope $\operatorname{Root}(Q)$ is reflexive and terminal; we moreover give a combinatorial description of the facets of $\operatorname{Root}(Q)$. We also show that if $Q$ is planar, then $\operatorname{Root}(Q)$ is (integrally equivalent to the) polar dual of the flow polytope of the dual quiver. Finally we consider the case that $Q$ comes from a ranked poset $P$, and show that $\operatorname{Root}(Q)$ is polar dual to (a translation of) a marked poset polytope. We then study the toric variety $Y(\mathcal{F}_Q)$ associated to the face fan $\mathcal{F}_Q$ of $\operatorname{Root}(Q)$. If $Q$ comes from a ranked poset $P$ we give a combinatorial description of the Picard group of $Y(\mathcal{F}_Q)$, and we show that $Y(\mathcal{F}_Q)$ is a small partial desingularisation of the Hibi toric variety $Y_{\mathcal{O}(P)}$ of the order polytope $\mathcal{O}(P)$. We show that $Y(\mathcal{F}_Q)$ has a small crepant toric resolution of singularities $Y(\widehat{\mathcal{F}}_Q)$, and as a consequence that the Hibi toric variety $Y_{\mathcal{O}(P)}$ has a small resolution of singularities for any ranked poset $P$. These results have applications to mirror symmetry.

Abstract:We introduce a deformed product construction for simple polytopes in terms of lower-triangular block matrix representations. We further show how Gale duality can be employed for the construction and the analysis of deformed products such that specified faces (e.g., all the k-faces) are “strictly preserved” under projection.Thus, starting from an arbitrary neighborly simplicial (d−2)-polytope Q on n−1 vertices, we construct a deformed n-cube, whose projection to the last d coordinates yields a neighborly cubical d-polytope. As an extension of the cubical case, we construct matrix representations of deformed products of (even) polygons (DPPs) which have a projection to d-space that retains the complete $$(\lfloor\tfrac{d}{2}\rfloor-1)$$-skeleton.In both cases the combinatorial structure of the images under projection is determined by the neighborly simplicial polytope Q: Our analysis provides explicit combinatorial descriptions. This yields a multitude of combinatorially different neighborly cubical polytopes and DPPs.As a special case, we obtain simplified descriptions of the neighborly cubical polytopes of Joswig and Ziegler (Discrete Comput. Geom. 24:325–344, 2000) as well as of the projected deformed products of polygons announced by Ziegler (Electron. Res. Announc. Am. Math. Soc. 10:122–134, 2004), a family of 4-polytopes whose “fatness” gets arbitrarily close to 9.

Abstract:Over a smooth projective toric variety we study toric sheaves, that is, reflexive sheaves equivariant with respect to the acting torus, from a polyhedral point of view. One application is the explicit construction of the torus invariant universal extension of two nef line bundles via polyhedral inclusion/exclusion sequences. Second, we link the cohomology of toric sheaves to the cohomology of certain constructible sheaves explicitly built out of the associated polyhedra. For the latter we define a concrete double complex and a spectral sequence which computes the cohomology of toric sheaves from the reduced cohomology of polyhedral subsets living in the realification of the character lattice of the toric variety.

Abstract:We analyze polyhedra composed of hexagons and triangles with three faces around each vertex, and their 3-regular planar graphs of edges and vertices, which we call "trihexes". Trihexes are analogous to fullerenes, which are 3-regular planar graphs whose faces are all hexagons and pentagons. Every trihex can be represented as the quotient of a hexagonal tiling of the plane under a group of isometries generated by rotations. Every trihex can also be described with either one or three "signatures": triples of numbers that describe the arrangement of the rotocenters of these rotations. Simple arithmetic rules relate the three signatures that describe the same trihex. We obtain a bijection between trihexes and equivalence classes of signatures as defined by these rules. Labeling trihexes with signatures allows us to put bounds on the number of trihexes for a given number of vertices v in terms of the prime factorization of v and to prove a conjecture concerning trihexes that have no "belts" of hexagons.

Abstract:The convex hulls of face-vertex incident vectors of 3-face-colorable convex polytopes are computed. It is found that every such convex hull is a $d$-polytope with $d+2$ or $d+3$ vertices. Utilizing Gale transform and Gale diagram, we calculate its combinatorial structure. Finally, a necessary and sufficient criterion for combinatorial equivalence of two such convex hulls is given.

Triangulations of cosmological polytopes

Abstract:A cosmological polytope is defined for a given Feynman diagram, and its canonical form may be used to compute the contribution of the Feynman diagram to the wavefunction of certain cosmological models. Given a subdivision of a polytope, its canonical form is obtained as a sum of the canonical forms of the facets of the subdivision. In this paper, we identify such formulas for the canonical form via algebraic techniques. It is shown that the toric ideal of every cosmological polytope admits a Gröbner basis with a squarefree initial ideal, yielding a regular unimodular triangulation of the polytope. In specific instances, including trees and cycles, we recover graphical characterizations of the facets of such triangulations that may be used to compute the desired canonical form. For paths and cycles, these characterizations admit simple enumeration. Hence, we obtain formulas for the normalized volume of these polytopes, extending previous observations of Kühne and Monin.

Abstract:Every n-edge colored n-regular graph G naturally gives rise to a simple abstract n-polytope, the colorful polytope of G, whose 1-skeleton is isomorphic to G. The paper describes colorful polytope versions of the associahedron and cyclohedron. Like their classical counterparts, the colorful associahedron and cyclohedron encode triangulations and flips, but now with the added feature that the diagonals of the triangulations are colored and adjacency of triangulations requires color preserving flips. The colorful associahedron and cyclohedron are derived as colorful polytopes from the edge colored graph whose vertices represent these triangulations and whose colors on edges represent the colors of flipped diagonals.
Polycubes via Dual Loops

Abstract:We present a complete characterization of polycubes of any genus based on their dual structure: a collection of oriented loops which run in each of the axis directions and capture polycubes via their intersection patterns. A polycube loop structure uniquely corresponds to a polycube. We also describe all combinatorially different ways to add a loop to a loop structure while maintaining its validity; similarly, we show how to identify loops that can be removed from a polycube loop structure without invalidating it. Our characterization gives rise to an iterative algorithm to construct provably valid polycube-maps for a given input surface; polycube-maps are frequently used to solve texture mapping, spline fitting, and hexahedral meshing. We showcase some results of a proof-of-concept implementation of this iterative algorithm.

Arbitrarily Large Neighborly Families of Congruent Symmetric Convex 3-Polytopes

Abstract:We construct, for any positive integer n, a family of n congruent convex polyhedra in R^3, such that every pair intersects in a common facet. Previously, the largest such family contained only eight polytopes. Our polyhedra are Voronoi regions of evenly distributed points on the helix (t, cos t, sin t). With a simple modification, we can ensure that each polyhedron in the family has a point, a line, and a plane of symmetry. We also generalize our construction to higher dimensions and introduce a new family of cyclic polytopes.
