Abstract:Answering a question of Farb-Leininger-Margalit, we give explicit lower bounds for the dilatations of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes lying in the kth term of the Johnson filtration of the mapping class group.

Abstract:We consider a shrinking flow of smooth, closed, uniformly convex hypersurfaces in (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space with speed fu^{alpha}{sigma}_n^{beta}, where u is the support function of the hypersurface, alpha, beta are two constants, and beta>0, sigma_n is the n-th symmetric polynomial of the principle curvature radii of the hypersurface. We prove that the flow has a unique smooth and uniformly convex solution for all time, and converges smoothly after normalisation, to a soliton which is a solution of an elliptic equation, when the constants alpha, beta belong to a suitable range, provided the initial hypersuface is origin-symmetric and f is a smooth positive even function on S^n. For the case alpha>= 1+n*beta, beta>0, we prove that the flow converges smoothly after normalisation to a unique smooth solution of an elliptic equation without any constraint on the initial hypersuface and smooth positive function f. When beta=1, our argument provides a uniform proof to the existence of the solutions to the equation of L_p Minkowski problem for p belongs to (-n-1,+infty).

Abstract:The theme of this paper is that algebraic complexity implies dynamical complexity for pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of a closed surface S_g of genus g. Penner proved that the logarithm of the minimal dilatation for a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of S_g tends to zero at the rate 1/g. We consider here the smallest dilatation of any pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of S_g acting trivially on Gamma/Gamma_k, the quotient of Gamma = pi_1(S_g) by the k-th term of its lower central series, k > 0. In contrast to Penner's asymptotics, we prove that this minimal dilatation is bounded above and below, independently of g, with bounds tending to infinity with k. For example, in the case of the Torelli group I(S_g), we prove that L(I(S_g)), the logarithm of the minimal dilatation in I(S_g), satisfies .197 < L(I(S_g))< 4.127. In contrast, we find pseudo-Anosov mapping classes acting trivially on Gamma/Gamma_k whose asymptotic translation lengths on the complex of curves tend to 0 as g tends toward infinity.

Abstract:The main result of this paper is a universal finiteness theorem for the set of all small dilatation pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms, ranging over all surfaces. More precisely, we consider pseudo-Anosovs F:S to S with |chi(S)| log(lambda(F)) bounded above by some constant, and we prove that, after puncturing the surfaces at the singular points of the stable foliations, the resulting set of mapping tori is finite. Said differently, there is a finite set of fibered hyperbolic 3-manifolds so that all small dilatation pseudo-Anosovs occur as the monodromy of a Dehn filling on one of the 3-manifolds in the finite list, where the filling is on the boundary slope of a fiber.
On the set of normalized dilatations of fully-punctured pseudo-Anosov maps

Abstract:We improve the bound on the number of tetrahedra in the veering triangulation of a fully-punctured pseudo-Anosov mapping torus in terms of the normalized dilatation. When the mapping torus has only one boundary component, we employ various techniques to improve the bound further. Together with the author's work with Hironaka in the case when the mapping torus has at least two boundary components, this allows us to understand small elements of the set $\mathcal{D}$ of normalized dilatations of fully-punctured pseudo-Anosov maps using computational means. In particular, we certify that the minimum element of $\mathcal{D}$ is $\mu^2$ and the minimum accumulation point of $\mathcal{D}$ is $\mu^4$, where $\mu = \frac{1 + \sqrt{5}}{2} \approx 1.618$ is the golden ratio.

Abstract:The dilatation of a pseudo-Anosov braid is a conjugacy invariant. In this paper, we study the dilatation of a special family of pseudo-Anosov braids. We prove an inductive formula to compute their dilatation, a monotonicity and an asymptotic behavior of the dilatation for this family of braids. We also give an example of a family of pseudo-Anosov braids with arbitrarily small dilatation such that the mapping torus obtained from such braid has 2 cusps and has an arbitrarily large volume.

Surface Homeomorphisms That Do Not Extend to Any Handlebody and the Johnson Filtration

Abstract:We prove the existence of homeomorphisms of a closed, orientable surface of genus 3 or greater that do not extend to any handlebody bounded by the surface. We show that such homeomorphisms exist arbitrarily deep in the Johnson filtration of the mapping class group. The second and third terms of the Johnson filtration are the well-known Torelli group and Johnson subgroup, respectively. Richard Hain has obtained very similar results by different methods.

Abstract:We prove that the $k$th term of the Johnson filtration of a closed, orientable surface of genus $g \geq 2$ has cohomological dimension $2g - 3$ for all $k \geq 3$ and $g \geq 2$. This answers a question of Farb and Bestvina--Bux--Margalit.

Abstract:We prove a q-analogue of the Carter-Payne theorem in the case where the differences between the parts of the partitions are sufficiently large. We identify a layer of the Jantzen filtration which contains the image of these Carter-Payne homomorphisms and we show how these homomorphisms compose.

Abstract:We prove a Johns theorem for simplices in $R^d$ with positive dilation factor $d+2$, which improves the previously known $d^2$ upper bound. This bound is tight in view of the $d$ lower bound. Furthermore, we give an example that $d$ isn't the optimal lower bound when $d=2$. Our results answered both questions regarding Johns theorem for simplices with positive dilation raised by \cite{leme2020costly}.

Abstract:We provide a lower bound on the volume of the compactified mapping torus of a strongly irreducible end-periodic homeomorphism f. This result, together with work of Field, Kim, Leininger, and Loving, shows that the volume of the compactified mapping torus of f is comparable to the translation length of f on a connected component of the pants graph, extending work of Brock in the finite-type setting on volumes of mapping tori of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms.

Finite type invariants in low degrees and the Johnson filtration

Abstract:We study the behaviour of the Casson invariant $\lambda$, its square, and Othsuki's second invariant $\lambda_2$ as functions on the Johnson subgroup of the mapping class group. We show that since $\lambda$ and $d_2 = \lambda_2 - 18 \lambda^2$ are invariants that are morphisms on respectively the second and the third level of the Johnson filtration they never vanish on any level of this filtration. In contrast we prove that the invariant $\lambda_2-18\lambda^2 +3\lambda$ vanishes on the fifth level of the Johnson filtration, $\mathcal{M}_{g,1}(5)$, and as a consequence we prove that, for instance, the Poincaré homology sphere does not admit any Heegaard splitting with gluing map an element in $\mathcal{M}_{g,1}(5)$. Finally we determine a surgery formula for Othsuki's second invariant $\lambda_2$.

The Dynamics of Measurable Pseudo-Anosov Maps

Abstract:We study the dynamics of measurable pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of surfaces, a generalization of Thurston's pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms. A measurable pseudo-Anosov map has a transverse pair of full measure turbulations consisting of streamlines which are dense immersed lines: these turbulations are equipped with measures which are expanded and contracted uniformly by the homeomorphism. The turbulations need not have a good product structure anywhere, but have some local structure imposed by the existence of tartans: bundles of unstable and stable streamline segments which intersect regularly, and on whose intersections the product of the measures on the turbulations agrees with the ambient measure. We prove that measurable pseudo-Anosov maps are transitive, have dense periodic points, sensitive dependence on initial conditions, and are ergodic with respect to the ambient measure. Measurable pseudo-Anosovs maps were introduced in [11], where we constructed a parameterized family of non-conjugate examples on the sphere.

Abstract:We show that the Liechti-Strenner's example for the closed nonorientable surface in \cite{LiechtiStrenner18} minimizes the dilatation within the class of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms with an orientable invariant foliation and all but the first coefficient of the characteristic polynomial of the action induced on the first cohomology nonpositive. We also show that the Liechti-Strenner's example of orientation-reversing homeomorphism for the closed orientable surface in \cite{LiechtiStrenner18} minimizes the dilatation within the class of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms with an orientable invariant foliation and all but the first coefficient of the characteristic polynomial $p(x)$ of the action induced on the first cohomology nonpositive or all but the first coefficient of $p(x) (x \pm 1)^2$, $p(x) (x^2 \pm 1)$, or $p(x) (x^2 \pm x + 1)$ nonpositive.

Abstract:We define a filtration on the Chow groups of a smooth projective variety X over a field k by using the cycle map into continuous l-adic etale cohomology. The main theorem says that if k is a function field in one variable over a finite field, this filtration for zero cycles is of length at most one modulo the kernel of the cycle map.

Abstract:We prove that the infinite family of asymptotic mapping class groups of surfaces of defined by Funar--Kapoudjian and Aramayona--Funar are of type $F_\infty$, thus answering questions of Funar-Kapoudjian-Sergiescu and Aramayona-Vlamis. As it turns out, this result is a specific instance of a much more general theorem which allows to deduce that asymptotic mapping class groups of Cantor manifolds, also introduced in this paper, are of type $F_\infty$, provide the underlying manifolds satisfy some general hypotheses. As important examples, we will obtain $F_\infty$ asymptotical mapping class groups that contain, respectively, the mapping class group of every compact surface with non-empty boundary, the automorphism group of every free group of finite rank, or infinite families of arithmetic groups. In addition, for certain types of manifolds, the homology of our asymptotic mapping class groups coincides with the stable homology of the relevant mapping class groups, as studied by Harer and Hatcher--Wahl.

Abstract:We study the asymptotics of the Poisson kernel and Green's functions of the fractional conformal Laplacian for conformal infinities of asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We derive sharp expansions of the Poisson kernel and Green's functions of the conformal Laplacian near their singularities. Our expansions of the Green's functions answer the first part of the conjecture of Kim-Musso-Wei[ 21 ] in the case of locally flat conformal infinities of Poincare-Einstein manifolds and together with the Poisson kernel asymptotic is used also in our paper [ 25 ] to show solvability of the fractional Yamabe problem in that case. Our asymptotics of the Green's functions on the general case of conformal infinities of asymptotically hyperbolic space is used also in [ 29 ] to show solvability of the fractional Yamabe problem for conformal infinities of dimension \begin{document}$ 3 $\end{document} and fractional parameter in \begin{document}$ (\frac{1}{2}, 1) $\end{document} corresponding to a global case left by previous works.

Abstract:We establish dilation theorems for non-tight frames with additional structure, i.e., frames generated by unitary groups of operators and projective unitary representations. This generalizes previous dilation results for Parseval frames due to Han and Larson, and Gabardo and Han. We also extend the dilation theorem for Parseval wavelets due to Dutkay, Han, Picioroaga, and Sun by identifying the optimal class of frame wavelets for which dilation into an orthonormal wavelet is possible.

Abstract:Given a closed, oriented Lagrangian submanifold $L$ in a Liouville domain $\overline{M}$, one can define a Maurer-Cartan element with respect to a certain $L_\infty$-structure on the string homology $\widehat{H}_\ast^{S^1}(\mathcal{L}L;\mathbb{R})$, completed with respect to the action filtration. When the first Gutt-Hutchings capacity of $\overline{M}$ is finite, and $L$ is a $K(\pi,1)$ space, it leads to interesting geometric implications. In particular, we show that $L$ bounds a non-constant pseudoholomorphic disc of Maslov index 2. This confirms a general form of Audin's conjecture and generalizes the works of Fukaya and Irie in the case of $\mathbb{C}^n$ to a wide class of Liouville manifolds. In particular, when $\dim_\mathbb{R}(\overline{M})=6$, every closed, orientable, prime Lagrangian 3-manifold $L\subset\overline{M}$ is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form, or $S^1\times\Sigma_g$, where $\Sigma_g$ is a closed oriented surface.

Abstract:In our previous works we proved a finiteness property of the radii of convergence functions associated with a vector bundle with connection on $p$-adic analytic curves. We showed that the radii are locally constant functions outside a locally finite graph in the curve, called controlling graph. In this paper we refine that finiteness results by giving a bound on the size of the controlling graph in terms of the geometry of the curve and the rank of the module. This is based on super-harmonicity properties of radii of convergence and partial heights of the Newton polygon. Under suitable assumptions, we relate the size of the controlling graph associated with the total height of the convergence Newton polygon to the Euler characteristic in the sense of de Rham cohomology.
