Abstract:We consider a shrinking flow of smooth, closed, uniformly convex hypersurfaces in (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space with speed fu^{alpha}{sigma}_n^{beta}, where u is the support function of the hypersurface, alpha, beta are two constants, and beta>0, sigma_n is the n-th symmetric polynomial of the principle curvature radii of the hypersurface. We prove that the flow has a unique smooth and uniformly convex solution for all time, and converges smoothly after normalisation, to a soliton which is a solution of an elliptic equation, when the constants alpha, beta belong to a suitable range, provided the initial hypersuface is origin-symmetric and f is a smooth positive even function on S^n. For the case alpha>= 1+n*beta, beta>0, we prove that the flow converges smoothly after normalisation to a unique smooth solution of an elliptic equation without any constraint on the initial hypersuface and smooth positive function f. When beta=1, our argument provides a uniform proof to the existence of the solutions to the equation of L_p Minkowski problem for p belongs to (-n-1,+infty).

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the flow of 2-surfaces in R(3) for some negative power of the Gauss curvature. We show that strictly convex surfaces expanding with normal velocity K(-alpha), when 1/2 < alpha <= 1, converge to infinity in finite time. After appropriate rescaling, they converge to spheres. In the 2-dimensional case, our results close an apparent gap in the powers considered by previous authors, that is, for alpha is an element of (0, 1/2] by Urbas and Huisken and for alpha = 1 by Schnurer.

Abstract:Let M n be a smooth, compact manifold without boundary, and F 0: M n → R n+1 a smooth immersion which is convex. The one-parameter families F(·, t): M n × [0, T) → R n+1 of hypersurfaces M t n = F(·, t)(M n ) satisfy an initial value problem dt/dF(·, t) = −H k (·, t)ν(·, t), F(·, 0) = F 0(·), where H is the mean curvature and ν(·, t) is the outer unit normal at F(·, t), such that −H ν = $\overrightarrow H $ is the mean curvature vector, and k > 0 is a constant. This problem is called H k -flow. Such flow will develop singularities after finite time. According to the blow-up rate of the square norm of the second fundamental forms, the authors analyze the structure of the rescaled limit by classifying the singularities as two types, i.e., Type I and Type II. It is proved that for Type I singularity, the limiting hypersurface satisfies an elliptic equation; for Type II singularity, the limiting hypersurface must be a translating soliton.

Abstract:We prove that in the non-orientable setting, the minimal stretch factor of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a surface of genus $g$ with a fixed number of punctures is asymptotically on the order of $\frac{1}{g}$. Our result adapts the work of Yazdi to non-orientable surfaces. We include the details of Thurston's theory of fibered faces for non-orientable 3-manifolds.

Abstract:Let $F',F$ be any two closed orientable surfaces of genus $g'>g\ge 1$, and $f:F\to F$ be any pseudo-Anosov map. Then we can "extend" $f$ to be a pseudo-Anosov map $f':F'\to F'$ so that there is a fiber preserving degree one map $M(F',f')\to M(F,f)$ between the hyperbolic surface bundles. Moreover the extension $f'$ can be chosen so that the surface bundles $M(F',f')$ and $M(F,f)$ have the same first Betti numbers.

The Dynamics of Measurable Pseudo-Anosov Maps

Abstract:We study the dynamics of measurable pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of surfaces, a generalization of Thurston's pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms. A measurable pseudo-Anosov map has a transverse pair of full measure turbulations consisting of streamlines which are dense immersed lines: these turbulations are equipped with measures which are expanded and contracted uniformly by the homeomorphism. The turbulations need not have a good product structure anywhere, but have some local structure imposed by the existence of tartans: bundles of unstable and stable streamline segments which intersect regularly, and on whose intersections the product of the measures on the turbulations agrees with the ambient measure. We prove that measurable pseudo-Anosov maps are transitive, have dense periodic points, sensitive dependence on initial conditions, and are ergodic with respect to the ambient measure. Measurable pseudo-Anosovs maps were introduced in [11], where we constructed a parameterized family of non-conjugate examples on the sphere.

Abstract:A pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a surface is a canonical representative of its mapping class. In this paper, we explain that a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow is similarly a canonical representative of its stable Hamiltonian class. It follows that there are finitely many pseudo-Anosov flows admitting positive Birkhoff sections on any given rational homology 3-sphere. This result has a purely topological consequence: any 3-manifold can be obtained in at most finitely many ways as $p/q$ surgery on a fibered hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ for a slope $p/q$ satisfying $q\geq 6$, $p\neq 0, \pm 1, \pm 2 \mod q$. The proof of the main theorem generalizes an argument of Barthelmé--Bowden--Mann.

Abstract:The theme of this paper is that algebraic complexity implies dynamical complexity for pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of a closed surface S_g of genus g. Penner proved that the logarithm of the minimal dilatation for a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of S_g tends to zero at the rate 1/g. We consider here the smallest dilatation of any pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of S_g acting trivially on Gamma/Gamma_k, the quotient of Gamma = pi_1(S_g) by the k-th term of its lower central series, k > 0. In contrast to Penner's asymptotics, we prove that this minimal dilatation is bounded above and below, independently of g, with bounds tending to infinity with k. For example, in the case of the Torelli group I(S_g), we prove that L(I(S_g)), the logarithm of the minimal dilatation in I(S_g), satisfies .197 < L(I(S_g))< 4.127. In contrast, we find pseudo-Anosov mapping classes acting trivially on Gamma/Gamma_k whose asymptotic translation lengths on the complex of curves tend to 0 as g tends toward infinity.

Distinctness of two pseudo-Anosov maps

Abstract:In 1981, Arnoux and Yoccoz gave the first examples of pseudo-Anosov maps with odd degree stretch factors. In 1985, D.~Fried deduced the existence of a pseudo-Anosov map in genus three with the same stretch factor as the Arnoux-Yoccoz example in that genus, and asked if these were the same. We show that they are distinct. We do this by, in a sense, reversing Fried's construction; we show that the mapping torus of the pseudo-Anosov map induced by the Arnoux-Yoccoz map on the surface obtained by blowing-up its two singularities has no cross section which is a torus with two points blown-up.

Abstract:We show that pseudo-Anosov mapping classes are generic in every Cayley graph of the mapping class group of a finite-type hyperbolic surface. Our method also yields an analogous result for rank-one CAT(0) groups and hierarchically hyperbolic groups with Morse elements. Finally, we prove that Morse elements are generic in every Cayley graph of groups that are quasi-isometric to (well-behaved) hierarchically hyperbolic groups. This gives a quasi-isometry invariant theory of counting group elements in groups beyond relatively hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:The main result of this paper is a universal finiteness theorem for the set of all small dilatation pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms, ranging over all surfaces. More precisely, we consider pseudo-Anosovs F:S to S with |chi(S)| log(lambda(F)) bounded above by some constant, and we prove that, after puncturing the surfaces at the singular points of the stable foliations, the resulting set of mapping tori is finite. Said differently, there is a finite set of fibered hyperbolic 3-manifolds so that all small dilatation pseudo-Anosovs occur as the monodromy of a Dehn filling on one of the 3-manifolds in the finite list, where the filling is on the boundary slope of a fiber.

Abstract:We show that a transitive Anosov flow with orientable stable and unstable foliations that either (i) admits a Birkhoff section whose first return map is a Penner type pseudo-Anosov map, or (ii) is totally periodic admits a genus one Birkhoff section. This provides evidence for a conjecture of Fried and Ghys. The proof utilizes a result of the author on the horizontal Goodman surgery operation. To apply this result for showing (i), we establish correspondence between horizontal Goodman surgery on pseudo-Anosov flows and horizontal surgery on veering triangulations in the layered setting.

Creating pseudo-Anosov Maps from Permutations and Matrices

Abstract:We provide an integral combinatorial characterization of pseudo-Anosov maps on closed oriented surfaces of genus g > 1. We show that an orientation-preserving pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism with orientable foliations and fixing all critical trajectories can be encoded as a permutation of 2g+v-1 positive integers, where v is the number of singular points of the foliations (disregarding multiplicity). We call such a permutations an ordered block permutation (OBP), and it satisfies an admissiblity condition. Conversely, we show that a surface along with measured foliations (up to scaling) and the pseudo-Anosov map can be uniquely constructed out of the data of an admissible permutation of 2g+v-1 positive integers. In particular, for closed surfaces, we construct every orientable foliation invariant under a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism.

Logarithmic systolic growth for hyperbolic surfaces in every genus

Abstract:More than thirty years ago, Brooks and Buser-Sarnak constructed sequences of closed hyperbolic surfaces with logarithmic systolic growth in the genus. Recently, Liu and Petri showed that such logarithmic systolic lower bound holds for every genus (not merely for genera in some infinite sequence) using random surfaces. In this article, we show a similar result through a more direct approach relying on the original Brooks/Buser-Sarnak surfaces.

Abstract:We construct analytic surface symplectomorphisms with unstable elliptic fixed points; this solves a problem of Birkhoff (1927). More precisely, we construct analytic symplectomorphisms of the sphere and of the disk which are transitive, with respectively only 2 and 1 periodic points. This also solves problems of proposed by Herman (1998), Fayad-Katok (2004) and Fayad-Krikorian (2018). To establish these results, we introduce a principle that enables to realize, by an analytic symplectomorphism, properties which are $C^0$-realizable by the approximation by conjugacy method of Anosov-Katok.

Abstract:We study the existence of Anosov diffeomorphisms on complete open surfaces. We show that under the assumptions of density of periodic points and uniform geometry that such diffeomorphisms have a system of Margulis measures, which are a holonomy invariant and dynamically invariant system of measures along the stable and unstable leaves. This shows that there can be no such diffeomorphism with a global product structure.

Abstract:A given self-map $f\colon M\to M$ of a compact manifold determines the sequence $\{L(f^n)\}_{n=1}^\infty$, of the Lefschetz numbers of its iterations. We consider its dual sequence $\{a_n(f)\}_{n=1}^\infty$ given by the Möbius inversion formula. The set ${\mathcal AP}(f)=\{ n\in \mathbb N\ \colon\ a_n(f)\neq 0\}$ is called the set of algebraic periods. We solve an open problem existing in literature by showing that for every finite subset ${\mathcal A}$ of natural numbers there exist an orientable surface $S_{\rm g}$, as well as a non-orientable surface $N_{\rm g}$, of genus ${\rm g}$, and a Morse$\unicode{x2013}$Smale diffeomorphism $f$ of this surface such that $\mathcal{AP}(f)=\mathcal{A}$. For such a map it implies the existence of points of a minimal period $n$ for each odd $n \in \mathcal{A}$. For the orientation-reversing Morse$\unicode{x2013}$Smale diffeomorphisms of $S_{\rm g}$ we identify strong restrictions on ${\mathcal AP}(f)$. Our method also provides an estimate of the number of homotopy classes of Morse$\unicode{x2013}$Smale diffeomorphisms, which is exponential in ${\rm g}$.

Abstract:Given two automorphisms of a group $G$, one is interested in knowing whether they are conjugate in the automorphism group of $G$, or in the abstract commensurator of $G$, and how these two properties may differ. When $G$ is the fundamental group of a closed orientable surface, we present a uniform finiteness theorem for the class of pseudo-Anosov automorphisms. We present an explicit example of a commensurably conjugate pair of pseudo-Anosov automorphisms of a genus $3$ surface, that are not conjugate in the Mapping Class Group, and we also show that infinitely many independent automorphisms of hyperbolic orbifolds have class number equal to one. In the appendix, we briefly survey the Latimer-MacDuffee theorem that addresses the case of automorphisms of $\mathbb{Z}^n$, with a point of view that is suited to an analogy with surface group automorphisms.

Abstract:We study the iterative behavior of the family of 3-step linear fractional recurrences and the family of birational maps they define. We determine all the possible periodicities within this family or, equivalently, the birational maps of finite order. This family also contains pseudo-automorphisms of infinite order. One such family consists of completely integrable maps, and another family consists of maps of positive entropy. Both of these families have invariant families of $K3$ surfaces.
