Abstract:Our understanding of the Universe critically depends on the fundamental knowledge of particles and fields, which represents a central endeavor of modern high-energy physics. Energy frontier particle colliders - arguably, among the largest, most complex and advanced scientific instruments of modern times - for many decades have been at the forefront of scientific discoveries in high-energy physics. Due to technology advances and beam physics breakthroughs, the colliding beam facilities have progressed immensely and now operate at energies and luminosities many orders of magnitude greater than the pioneering instruments of the early 1960s. While the Large Hadron Collider and the Super-KEKB factory represent the frontier hadron and lepton colliders of today, respectively, future colliders are an essential component of a strategic vision for particle physics. Conceptual studies and technical developments for several exciting near- and medium-term future collider options are underway internationally. Analysis of numerous proposals and studies for far-future colliders indicate the limits of the collider beam technology due to machine size, cost, and power consumption, and call for a paradigm shift of the particle physics research at ultra-high energy but low luminosity colliders approaching or exceeding 1 PeV center-of-mass energy scale.

Abstract:We describe the road which led to the construction and exploitation of electron positron colliders, hightlighting how the young physics student Bruno Touschek met the Norwegian engineer Rolf Wideroe in Germany, during WWII, and collaborated in building the 15 MeV betatron, a secret project directed by Wideroe and financed by the Ministry of Aviation of the Reich. This is how Bruno Touschek learnt the science of making particle accelerators and was ready, many years later, to propose and build AdA, the first electron positron collider, in Frascati, Italy, in 1960. We shall then see how AdA was brought from Frascati to Orsay, in France. Taking advantage of the Orsay Linear Accelerator as injector, the Franco-Italian team was able to prove that collisions had taken place, opening the way to the use of particle colliders as a mean to explore high energy physics.

Abstract:High energy particle colliders have been in the forefront of particle physics for more than three decades. At present the near term US, European and international strategies of the particle physics community are centered on full exploitation of the physics potential of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) through its high-luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). A number of next generation collider facilities have been proposed and are currently under consideration for the medium- and far-future of the accelerator-based high energy physics. In this paper we offer a uniform approach to evaluation of various accelerators based on the feasibility of their energy reach, performance reach and cost range. We briefly review such post-LHC options as linear e+e- colliders in Japan (ILC) or at CERN (CLIC), muon collider, and circular lepton or hadron colliders in China (CepC/SppC) and Europe (FCC). We conclude with a look into ultimate energy reach accelerators based on plasmas and crystals, and some perspectives for the far future of accelerator-based particle physics.

Abstract:The collimation system is an essential part of the design of any high-power accelerator. Its functions include protection of components from accidental and intentional energy deposition, reduction of backgrounds, and beam diagnostics. Conventional multi-stage systems based on scatterers and absorbers offer robust shielding and efficient collection of losses. Two complementary concepts have been proposed to address some of the limitations of conventional systems: channeling and volume reflection in bent crystals and collimation with hollow electron beams. The main focus of this paper is the hollow electron beam collimator, a novel concept based on the interaction of the circulating beam with a 5-keV, magnetically confined, pulsed hollow electron beam in a 2-m-long section of the ring. The electrons enclose the circulating beam, kicking halo particles transversely and leaving the beam core unperturbed. By acting as tunable diffusion enhancer and not as a hard aperture limitation, the hollow electron beam collimator extends conventional collimation systems beyond the intensity limits imposed by tolerable losses. The concept was tested experimentally at the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton collider. Results on the collimation of 980-GeV antiprotons are presented, together with prospects for the future.

Abstract:The status of research into muon colliders is discussed and plans are outlined for future theoretical and experimental studies. Besides continued work on the parameters of a 4 TeV collider, many studies are now concentrating on a machine near 100 GeV that could be a factory for the s-channel resonance production of Higgs particles. We discuss the research on the various components in such muon colliders, starting from the proton accelerator needed to generate the muons and proceeding through muon cooling, acceleration, storage in a collider ring and the collider detector. Finally, we present theoretical and experimental R & D plans for the next several years that should lead to a high level of understanding of the design and feasibility issues for all of the components of muon colliders.

Abstract:This article summarizes main developments of the hadron colliders and physics results obtained since their inception around forty years ago. The increase in the collision energy of over two orders of magnitude and even larger increases in luminosity provided experiments with unique data samples. Developments of full acceptance detectors, particle identification and analysis methods provided fundamental discoveries and ultra-precise measurements which culminated in the completion and in depth verification of the Standard Model. Hadron Collider Physics symposium provided opportunities for those working at hadron colliders to share results of their research since 1979 and helped greatly to develop the field of particle physics.

Abstract:Strong-strong beam-beam simulations for circular colliders are very time-consuming. Thus far, such simulations have predominantly utilized a linear transfer matrix to represent the full nonlinear lattice. Otherwise, when nonlinear lattices were included, beam-beam interactions were usually studied by using weak-strong or quasi-strong-strong numerical models. The next-generation circular colliders, including FCC-ee at CERN, CEPC in China, and the Super Tau-Charm Factories in China and Russia, will leverage the crab waist collision scheme with a large Piwinski angle. This scheme has already been employed in the two currently operational colliders, DAFNE and SuperKEKB. Accurate predictions of the performance of such colliders call for strong-strong beam-beam simulations, taking into account the interplay of the beam-beam interaction with lattice nonlinearities, beam-coupling impedances, and other collective effects. To answer this call, a novel code APES-T that allows integrating the direct strong-strong beam-beam simulations with element-by-element nonlinear tracking has been developed. To overcome the limitations in computing time, APES-T employs parallelization techniques. Specifically, the beam-beam module is parallelized using MPI programming, while the element-by-element tracking modules are parallelized using GPU programming. In this paper, we present the development of the APES-T code, its benchmark against the SAD code, and its application to the CEPC in investigating the interplay between beam-beam interaction, beamstrahlung, and lattices.

Investigation of the concurrent effects of ALP-photon and ALP-electron couplings in Collider and Beam Dump Searches

Abstract:Axion-like particles (ALPs) have been studied in numerous experiments to search for their interactions, but most studies have focused on deriving bounds for the single coupling. However, in ultraviolet (UV) models, these couplings can appear simultaneously, and their interplay could have important implications for collider and beam dump searches. In this study, we investigate the concurrent effects of the ALP-photon and ALP-electron couplings in a simplified model and examine how their simultaneous presence modifies existing bounds. We find that modifications to production cross-sections, decaying branching ratios, and the lifetime of the ALP are the major effects. Our results show that low-energy electron-positron colliders such as Belle-II and BaBar are primarily affected by the first two factors, while beam dump experiments such as E137 and NA64 are affected by the cross sections and lifetime. We also consider two UV models - the KSVZ model and a lepton-specific version of the DFSZ model - which have only one of the two couplings at tree-level. However, the other coupling can be generated at loops, and our analysis reveals that the simultaneous presence of the two couplings can significantly modify existing bounds on these models for $10^{-3} < m_a < 10$ GeV, especially for beam dump experiments. Overall, our study highlights the importance of considering the concurrent effects of the ALP-photon and ALP-electron couplings in future collider and beam dump analyses.

Abstract:A multi-TeV muon collider offers a spectacular opportunity in the direct exploration of the energy frontier. Offering a combination of unprecedented energy collisions in a comparatively clean leptonic environment, a high energy muon collider has the unique potential to provide both precision measurements and the highest energy reach in one machine that cannot be paralleled by any currently available technology. The topic generated a lot of excitement in Snowmass meetings and continues to attract a large number of supporters, including many from the early career community. In light of this very strong interest within the US particle physics community, Snowmass Energy, Theory and Accelerator Frontiers created a cross-frontier Muon Collider Forum in November of 2020. The Forum has been meeting on a monthly basis and organized several topical workshops dedicated to physics, accelerator technology, and detector R&D. Findings of the Forum are summarized in this report.

Abstract:The relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven national laboratory delivered in June 2000 the first collisions between Au nuclei at the highest center-of-mass energies achieved in a controlled enviroment to date, PHOBOS is one of the four experiments installed during this phase of RHIC running. This paper will describe the PHOBOS experiment, and discuss the results of the first physics measurement, the pseudo rapidity densities of primary charged particles near mid rapidity in central Au+Au collisions at two different energies, roots(NN) = 56 and 130 GeV. The observed densities are higher than those previously observed in any collisions, and the rate of increase between the two energies is larger than that for nucleon-nucleon collisions at comparable beam energies. This talk will describe the PHOBOS experiment, discuss the first physics measurement, and conclude with the present status of the experiment, the physics analysis and the perspectives for the future.
The Electro-Weak Phase Transition at Colliders: Confronting Theoretical Uncertainties and Complementary Channels

Abstract:We explore and contrast the capabilities of future colliders to probe the nature of the electro-weak phase transition. We focus on the real singlet scalar field extension of the Standard Model, representing the most minimal, yet most elusive, framework that can enable a strong first-order electro-weak phase transition. By taking into account the theoretical uncertainties and employing the powerful complementarity between gauge and Higgs boson pair channels in the searches for new scalar particles, we find that a 100 TeV proton collider has the potential to confirm or falsify a strong first-order transition. Our results hint towards this occurring relatively early in its lifetime. Furthermore, by extrapolating down to 27 TeV, we find that a lower-energy collider may also probe a large fraction of the parameter space, if not all. Such early discoveries would allow for precise measurements of the new phenomena to be obtained at future colliders and would pave the way to definitively verify whether this is indeed the physical remnant of a scalar field that catalyses a strong first-order transition.

Abstract:Raoul Gatto and Bruno Touschek's collaboration in the establishment of electron positron colliders as a fundamental discovery tool in particle physics will be illustrated. In particular, we will tell the little-known story of how Gatto and Touschek's pioneering vision combined to provide the theoretical foundations for AdA, the first matter-antimatter collider, and how their friendship with Wolfgang Pauli and Gerhard Lüders was crucial to their understanding of the CPT theorem, the basis for AdA's success. We will see how these two exceptional scientists shaped physics between Rome and Frascati, from the proposal to build AdA and, soon after in 1961, the larger machine ADONE, to the discovery of the $J/\Psi$ particle in 1974. We will also highlight Gatto and Touschek's contribution in mentoring an extraordinary cohort of students and collaborators whose work contributed to the renaissance of Italian theoretical physics after the Second World War and to the establishment of the Standard Model of particle physics.

New collider implications on a strongly first order EWPT

Abstract:In order to understand the early history of the universe, and to test baryogenesis models, determining the nature of the electroweak phase transition is imperative. The order and strength of this transition is strongly correlated to relatively large deviations in the $hhh$ coupling. In models where a considerable part of the $hhh$ coupling deviation is caused by charged particle loops, the $h\gamma\gamma$ coupling is also expected to deviate considerably. In this talk, by using a model-independent approach, I explain how to obtain conditions that are sufficient for a strongly first order phase transition. After the $h\gamma\gamma$ coupling is determined with precision at the HL-LHC, these conditions can be tested at Future Linear Colliders by measurements of the $hhh$ coupling, to conclusively determine the nature of the electroweak phase transition and the viability of electroweak baryogenesis on models with new charged scalars.

Abstract:A high-energy electron-positron collider has been widely recognized by the particle physics community to be the next crucial step for detailed studies of the Higgs boson and other fundamental particles and processes. Several proposals for such colliders, either linear or circular, are currently under evaluation. Any such collider will be required to reach high lumimosities, in order to collect enough data at a reasonable time scale, while at the same time coping with high rates of background particles produced from beam-beam interactions during the collisions. In this paper, we analyze the luminosity and beam-beam interaction characteristics of the Cool Copper Collider ( C3 ) and perform a comparison with other linear collider proposals. We conclude that C3 can reach the same or higher collision rates as the other proposals, without having to cope with higher beam-induced background fluxes. Abstract:The PSI Positron Production ( P3 or P-cubed) experiment is a e+ source and capture system with the potential to increase by an order of magnitude the state-of-the-art e+ yield normalized to the drive linac energy, a highly desirable goal for future colliders. The experiment is framed in the FCC-ee injector study and will be hosted at SwissFEL, located at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. This paper presents the P3 project at an advanced stage, with an emphasis on a capture system featuring a novel e+ matching device based on high-temperature superconducting solenoids, followed by two large aperture rf cavities surrounded by normal-conducting solenoids. Abstract:A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

Abstract:High-energy colliders provide direct access to the energy frontier, allowing to search for new physics at scales as high as the machine's center-of-mass energy, perform precision measurements of the Standard Model (SM) parameters, including those related to the flavor sector, and determine the Higgs boson properties and their connection to electroweak symmetry breaking. Each proposed future collider option has its own specific science goals and capabilities, depending on the designed running energy (energies) amongst other parameters. In this paper, an overview of the discovery potential of future circular and linear colliders is presented. Results from searches for beyond the Standard Model (BSM) phenomena at proton-proton, proton-electron, electron-positron, and muon-antimuon colliders are summarized.
