Abstract:We study $$ \overline{q} $$q-hybrid mixing for the light vector mesons and $$ \overline{q} $$q-glueball mixing for the light scalar mesons in Monte-Carlo based QCD Laplace sum rules. By calculating the two-point correlation function of a vector $$ \overline{q} $$γμq (scalar $$ \overline{q} $$q) current and a hybrid (glue- ball) current we are able to estimate the mass and the decay constants of the corresponding mixed “physical state” that couples to both currents. Our results do not support strong quark/gluonic mixing for either the 1−− or the 0++ states.
Non-Unitary $3 \times 3$ Mixing in Majorana Neutrinos and Vector-like Quark Models

Abstract:Non-unitary $3 \times 3$ mixing matrices are present in many extensions of the Standard Model. One of the most simple extensions is the addition of $n_R$ right-handed neutrinos without imposing Lepton Number Conservation ($n_R$$\nu$SM). In the region of the parameter space where the usual seesaw approximation is valid, deviations from $3 \times 3$ unitarity of the leptonic mixing matrix are negligible, while one has three light neutrinos and two or three heavy neutrinos with masses close to the GUT scale. This gap between the mass scales occurs while having order 1 Yukawa couplings, providing a natural explanation for the smallness of light neutrino masses - hence the name seesaw. Other regions of the parameter space, with lighter heavy neutrinos - with an eV or keV mass, for instance - and bigger deviations from unitarity of the leptonic mixing matrix, are still allowed by experiment. In fact, whenever heavy neutrino masses are many orders of magnitude below the GUT scale there are interesting phenomenological implications at low energies. To analyse such regions with precision, one needs an exact parameterisation, since approximations that were valid in the usual seesaw case now fail. This thesis will consist of a study and classification of regions of the 3$\nu$SM parameter space in the light of a newly-developed exact parameterisation. Furthermore, it will also include a study of models with vector-like quarks, another simple extension of the SM, that contains a $3 \times 3$ non-unitary quark mixing matrix. Studying the most interesting regions of the parameter space of vector-like quarks models also benefits from the use of the aforementioned exact parameterisation. These regions are phenomenologically rich and may explain certain open questions like the CKM unitarity problem/Cabibbo angle anomaly. A chapter discussing the experimental implications of these models is also included.

Abstract:We perform a systematical and analytical study of lepton mixing which can be derived from the subgroups of SU(3) under the assumption that neutrinos are Dirac particles. We find that type D groups can predict lepton mixing patterns compatible with the experimental data at the 3s level. The lepton mixing matrix turns out to be of the trimaximal form, and the Dirac CP violating phase is trivial. Moreover, we extend the flavor symmetry to the quark sector. The Cabibbo mixing between the first two generations of quarks can be generated by type D groups. Since all the finite subgroups of U(3) that are not the subgroups of SU(3) have not been classified, an exhaustive scan over all finite discrete groups up to order 2000 is performed with the help of the computer algebra system GAP. We find that only 90 (10) groups for Dirac (Majorana) neutrinos can generate the lepton mixing angles in the experimentally preferred ranges. The lepton mixing matrix is still the trimaximal pattern and the Dirac CP phase remains trivial. The smallest groups that lead to viable mixing angles are [162, 10], [162, 12], and [162, 14]. For quark flavor mixing, the correct order of magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements cannot be generated. Only the Cabibbo mixing is allowed even if we impose very loose constraints 0.1 <= vertical bar V-us vertical bar <= 0.3 and vertical bar V-ub vertical bar <= vertical bar V-cb vertical bar < vertical bar V-us vertical bar. The group Delta(6 x 7(2)) can predict a Cabibbo angle theta(q) = pi/14 in good agreement with the best fit value. The observed Cabibbo mixing angle can easily be accommodated if the first two left-handed quark fields are assigned to a doublet. The groups that can give rise to both phenomenologically viable lepton mixing angles and acceptable Cabibbo angles are discussed, and the groups Delta(6 x 9(2)), [648, 259], [648, 260], [648, 266], and Delta(6 x 14(2)) are especially promising in the case of the triplet assignment for both quark and lepton sectors. The three groups [496, 19], [496, 21], and [496, 23] are interesting candidates for flavor symmetry if the left-handed lepton and quark fields are assigned to triplet and doublet plus singlet, respectively.

As an example, we analyze the possible mixing patterns which can be obtained from the breaking of $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(6{n}^{2})$ and $CP$ symmetries. We find $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(294)$ combined with $CP$ is the smallest flavor group which can give a good fit to the experimental data of quark and lepton mixing in both approaches.

Abstract:We suggest a simple relation between the quark and the lepton mixing within the framework of type-I seesaw mechanism. We show that within our ansatz the empirical King-Mohapatra-Smirnov relation, which suggests a connection between the CKM and PMNS mixing where $|V^\text{PMNS}_{13}|\approx \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}\sin(\theta_C) $, can be derived. This is possible within a restricted region of the Dirac and Majorana mass parameters.

Abstract:Gaussian QCD sum-rules are ideally suited to the study of mixed states of gluonium (glueballs) and quark ($q\bar q$) mesons because of their capability to resolve widely-separated states of comparable strength. The analysis of the Gaussian QCD sum-rules (GSRs) for all possible two-point correlation functions of gluonic and non-strange ($I=0$) quark scalar ($J^{PC}=0^{++}$) currents is discussed. For the non-diagonal sum-rule of gluonic and $q\bar q$ currents we show that perturbative and gluon condensate contributions are chirally suppressed compared to non-perturbative effects of the quark condensate, mixed condensate, and instantons, implying that the mixing of quark mesons and gluonium is of non-perturbative origin. The independent predictions of the masses and relative coupling strengths from the non-diagonal and the two diagonal GSRs are remarkably consistent with a scenario of two states with masses of approximately 1 GeV and 1.4 GeV that couple to significant mixtures of quark and gluonic currents. The mixing is nearly maximal with the heavier mixed state having a slightly larger coupling to gluonic currents than the lighter state.

Abstract:Meson and anti-meson mixing processes constitute an important source of constraints on models that give tree level contributions to flavor violating neutral processes. In electroweak $ \text{SU}(3)_\text{L} \times \text{U}(1)_N $ models, where anomaly cancellation requires that one family of quarks transforms differently from the other ones, processes involving flavor changing neutral currents gain tree level contributions mediated by gauge and scalar fields. Here, we firstly investigate the contributions of the neutral scalar that mimics the standard Higgs to the $K^0-\bar K^0$, $B^0-\bar B^0$, and $D^0-\bar D^0$ mixing processes and confront our predictions with experiments. The results will determine the quark mixing matrices $V^{u,d}_L$. In possession of this information we, next, evaluate the contributions of the neutral gauge bosons $Z^{\prime}$ and $Z$ to the $K^0-\bar K^0$, $B^0-\bar B^0$, and $D^0-\bar D^0$ processes. This realistic approach to meson transitions will provide severe bounds on $M_{ Z^{\prime}}$ and $Z-Z^{\prime}$ mixing angle.

Abstract:We study (Q) over barQ (q) over barq and (Q) over bar qQ (q) over bar states as mixed states in QCD sum rules. By calculating the two-point correlation functions of pure states of their corresponding currents, we review the mass and coupling constant predictions of J(PC) = 1(++), 1(--), and 1(-+) states. By calculating the two-point mixed correlation functions of (Q) over bar QQ (q) over barq and (Q) over bar qQ (q) over bar currents, we estimate the mass and coupling constants of the corresponding "physical state" that couples to both (Q) over barQ (q) over barq and (Q) over bar qQ (q) over bar currents. Our results suggest that for 1(++) states, the (Q) over barQ (q) over barq and (Q) over bar qQ (q) over bar components are more likely to mix, while for 1(--) and 1(-+) states, there is less mixing between (Q) over barQ (q) over barq and (Q) over bar qQ (q) over bar. Our results suggest the Y series of states have more complicated components.

Abstract:We study, in a systematic way, the $V_{\text{CKM}}$ unitarity relations which arise in extensions of the three generations Standard Model (3gSM) involving the addition of vector-like quarks (VLQ). In particular, we emphasize the effect of the presence of VLQ on $V_{\text{CKM}}$ moduli differences, as well on the size of the imaginary parts of rephasing invariant $V_{\text{CKM}}$ quartets. We consider the special case where an up-type VLQ is used to attempt at solving the unitarity problem in the first line of $V_{\text{CKM}}$.

The independent predictions of the masses and relative coupling strengths from the different correlators are remarkably consistent with a scenario of two scalar states that couple to nearly-maximal mixtures of quark and gluonic currents.

Abstract:We explore the quantum electrodynamic (QED) corrections to the Ξc+−Ξc′+ mixing within the framework of light-front quark model (LFQM) in the three-quark picture. After explicitly investigating the relation between the Ξc−Ξc′ mixing and the flavor SU(3) and heavy quark symmetry breaking, we derive the QED contributions to the Ξc+−Ξc′+ mixing angle. Numerical results indicate the QED contribution is smaller than the one from the mass difference between the strange and up/down quark provided by a recent lattice quantum chromodynamics analysis. Bilarge Neutrino Mixing and Abelian Flavor Symmetry

Abstract:We explore two bilarge neutrino mixing Anzatze within the context of Abelian flavor symmetry theories: (BL1) sin theta(12) similar to lambda, sin theta(13) similar to lambda, sin theta(23) similar to lambda, and (BL2) sin theta(12) similar to lambda, sin theta(13) similar to lambda, sin theta(23) similar to 1 - lambda. The first pattern is proposed by two of us and is favored if the atmospheric mixing angle theta(23) lies in the first octant, while the second one is preferred for the second octant of theta(23). In order to reproduce the second texture, we find that the flavor symmetry should be U(1) x Z(m), while for the first pattern the flavor symmetry should be extended to U(1) x Z(m) x Z(n) with m and n of different parity. Explicit models for both mixing patterns are constructed based on the flavor symmetries U(1) x Z(3) x Z(4) and U(1) x Z(2). The models are extended to the quark sector within the framework of SU(5) grand unified theory in order to give a successful description of quark and lepton masses and mixing simultaneously. Abstract:The vector meson omega-phi mixing is studied in two alternative scenarios with different numbers of mixing angles, i.e., the one-mixing-angle scenario and the two-mixing-angle scenario, in both the octet-singlet mixing scheme and the quark flavor mixing scheme. Concerning the reproduction of experimental data and the Q(2) behavior of transition form factors, the one-mixing-angle scenario in the quark flavor scheme performs better than that in the octet-singlet scheme, while the two-mixing-angle scenario works well for both mixing schemes. The difference between the two mixing angles in the octet-singlet scheme is bigger than that in the quark flavor scheme.
Towards understanding fermion masses and mixings

Abstract:The Standard Model does not constrain the form of the Yukawa matrices and thus the origin of fermion mass hierarchies and mixing pattern remains puzzling. On the other hand, there are intriguing relations between the quark masses and their weak mixing angles, such as the well-known one $\tan \theta_C= \sqrt{m_d/m_s}$ for the Cabibbo angle, which may point towards specific textures of Yukawa matrices hypothesized by Harald Fritzsch at the end of the 70's. Though the original ansatz of Fritzsch is excluded by the experimental data, one can consider its minimal modification which consists in introducing an asymmetry between the 23 and 32 entries in the down-quark Yukawa matrix. We show that this structure is perfectly compatible with the present precision data on quark masses and CKM mixing matrix, and theoretically it can be obtained in the context of $SU(5)$ model with inter-family $SU(3)_H$ symmetry. We also discuss some alternative approaches which could give a natural description of the fermion mass spectrum and weak mixing pattern.

Abstract:We study the properties of vectorlike fermions that have the same gauge charges as the Standard Model lepton doublets, but opposite lepton number. These antileptons undergo decays mediated by heavier scalar leptoquarks, while the symmetries of this renormalizable model protect the vectorlike fermions and the leptoquarks from standard decays probed so far at colliders. We derive upper limits on the new Yukawa couplings imposed by flavor-changing processes, including B→Kνν ̄ and Bs−B ̄s mixing, and show that they are compatible with prompt antilepton decays at the LHC for wide parameter ranges. If the new particles couple predominantly to second-generation quarks, then their collider probes involve multiple jets and two taus or neutrinos, and are hampered by large backgrounds. If couplings to third-generation quarks are large, then the collider signals involve top quarks, and can be probed more efficiently at the LHC. Abstract:In heavy quark limit, the lowest-lying charmed baryons with two light quarks can form an SU(3) triplet and sextet. The Ξ c in the SU(3) triplet and Ξ c ′ in the sextet have the same J P C quantum number and can mix due to the finite charm quark mass and the fact the strange quark is heavier than the up/down quark. We explore the Ξ c – Ξ c ′ mixing by calculating the two-point correlation functions of the Ξ c and Ξ c ′ baryons from lattice QCD. Based on the lattice data, we adopt two independent methods to determine the mixing angle between Ξ c and Ξ c ′ . After making the chiral and continuum extrapolation, it is found that the mixing angle θ is 1.2 ∘ ± 0.1 ∘ , which seems insufficient to account for the large SU(3) symmetry breaking effects found in weak decays of charmed baryons.

Vector-like quarks: status and new directions at the LHC

Abstract:Experimental searches for vector-like quarks have until now only considered their decays into Standard Model particles. However, various new physics scenarios predict additional scalars, so that these vector-like quarks can decay to new channels. These new channels reduce the branching ratios into Standard Model final states, significantly affecting current mass bounds. In this article, we quantitatively assess the relevance and observability of single and pair production processes of vector-like quarks, followed by decays into both standard and exotic final states. We highlight the importance of large widths and the relative interaction strengths with Standard Model particles and new scalars. Then, we review the post-Moriond 2024 status of these models in light of available LHC data and discuss potential future strategies to enhance the scope of vector-like quark searches.

Abstract:We show that a unified description of the observed patterns of quark and lepton mixing can be achieved if the flavor group $D_n$ and CP symmetry are broken to $Z_2\times CP$ in the neutrino, charged lepton, up quark as well as down quark sectors, and the smallest group is $D_{14}$. We also perform a systematic study of how a dimension six operator $\overline{L}\widetilde{H}\nu_{R}\left(H^{\dagger}H\right)$ for Dirac neutrino masses may occur at tree level and in one loop.
