Abstract:Mumford defines a certain type of Shimura curves of Hodge type, parameterizing polarized complex abelian fourfolds. In this paper, we study the good reduction of such a curve in positive characteristic and give a characterization in the generically ordinary case.

Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:Further geometry and topology for pseudo-holomorphic curves in complex Grassmannians Gn(CN) are studied. Some curvature pinching theorems for pseudo-holomorphic curves with constant Kahler angles in G(m)(C-N) are obtained, so that the corresponding results for pseudo-holomorphic curves in complex projective spaces are generalized.

Abstract:We study the reduction properties of low genus curves whose Jacobian has complex multiplication. In the elliptic curve case, we classify the possible Kodaira types of reduction that can occur. Moreover, we investigate the possible Namikawa Ueno types that can occur for genus $2$ curves whose Jacobian has complex multiplication which is defined over the base field. We also produce bounds on the torsion subgroup of abelian varieties with complex multiplication defined over local fields.

Abstract:We study the Higgs bundles over good reduction of Shimura curve associated with quaternion division algebra to obtain some global results of Shimura curve in characteristic p. We obtain the mass formula counting the number of geometric points of the degeneracy locus in the Newton polygon stratification. Among the Higgs bundles over the Shimura curve in characteristic p, we find examples of semi-stable bundles which attain the upperbound of the instability under the Frobenius pull-back, as well as examples of strongly semi-stable bundles. We discuss the relation of the Higgs bundles with the recent advances in p-adic non-abelian Hodge theory. One sees in one example a comparison between the classical (complex) Simpson correspondence and the p-adic Simpson correspondence

Abstract:We give good reduction criteria for hyperbolic polycurves, i.e., successive extensions of families of curves, under mild assumption. These criteria are higher dimensional version of the good reduction criterion for hyperbolic curves given by Oda and Tamagawa.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of the Higgs bundle associated with the universal abelian variety over the good reduction of a Shimura curve of PEL type. Due to the endomorphism structure, the Higgs bundle decomposes into the direct sum of Higgs subbundles of rank two. They are basically divided into two type: uniformizing type and unitary type. As the first application we obtain the mass formula counting the number of geometric points of the degeneracy locus in the Newton polygon stratification. We show that each Higgs subbundle is Higgs semistable. Furthermore, for each Higgs subbundle of unitary type, either it is strongly semistable, or its Frobenius pull-back of a suitable power achieves the upper bound of the instability. We describe the Simpson-Ogus-Vologodsky correspondence for the Higgs subbundles in terms of the classical Cartier descent.

Abstract:We address the question of existence of absolutely simple abelian varieties of dimension 2 with everywhere good reduction over quadratic fields. The emphasis will be given to the construction of pairs $(K,C)$, where $K$ is a quadratic number field and $C$ is a genus $2$ curve with everywhere good reduction over $K$. We provide the first infinite sequence of pairs $(K,C)$ where $K$ is a real (complex) quadratic field and $C$ has everywhere good reduction over $K$. Moreover, we show that the Jacobian of $C$ is an absolutely simple abelian variety.

Characteristic $p$ analogues of the Mumford--Tate and André--Oort conjectures for products of ordinary GSpin Shimura varieties

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. We state characteristic $p$ analogues of the Mumford--Tate conjecture and the André--Oort conjecture for ordinary strata of mod $p$ Shimura varieties. We prove the conjectures for arbitrary products of GSpin Shimura varieties (and their subvarieties). Important subvarieties of GSpin Shimura varieties include modular and Shimura curves, Hilbert modular surfaces, $\mathrm{U}(1,n)$ unitary Shimura varieties, and moduli spaces of principally polarized Abelian and K3 surfaces. The two conjectures are both related to a notion of linearity for mod $p$ Shimura varieties, about which Chai has formulated the Tate-linear conjecture. Though seemingly different, the three conjectures are intricately entangled. We will first solve the Tate-linear conjecture for single GSpin Shimura varieties, above which we build the proof of the Tate-linear conjecture and the characteristic $p$ analogue of the Mumford--Tate conjecture for products of GSpin Shimura varieties. We then use the Tate-linear and the characteristic $p$ analogue of the Mumford--Tate conjectures to prove the characteristic $p$ analogue of the André--Oort conjecture. Our proof uses Chai's results on monodromy of $p$-divisible groups and rigidity theorems for formal tori, as well as Crew's parabolicity conjecture which is recently proven by D'Addezio.

Abstract:We show that there does not exist any Shimura curve with strictly maximal Higgs field generically in the Torelli locus of non-hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\geq 4$. In particular, Shimura curves of Mumford type are not generically in the Torelli locus of non-hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\geq 4$.

Abstract:We classify curves in the moduli space of curves that are both Shimura- and Teichmueller curves: Except for the moduli space of genus one curves there is only a single such curve. We start with a Hodge-theoretic description of Shimura curves and of Teichmueller curves that reveals similarities and differences of the two classes of curves. The proof of the classification relies on the geometry of square-tiled coverings and on estimating the numerical invariants of these particular fibered surfaces. Finally we translate our main result into a classification of Teichmueller curves with totally degenerate Lyapunov spectrum.

The Relative Manin-Mumford Conjecture

Abstract:We prove the Relative Manin-Mumford Conjecture for families of abelian varieties in characteristic 0. We follow the Pila-Zannier method to study special point problems, and we use the Betti map which goes back to work of Masser and Zannier in the case of curves. The key new ingredients compared to previous applications of this approach are a height inequality proved by both authors of the current paper and Dimitrov, and the first-named author's study of certain degeneracy loci in subvarieties of abelian schemes. We also strengthen this result and prove a criterion for torsion points to be dense in a subvariety of an abelian scheme over $\mathbb{C}$. The Uniform Manin-Mumford Conjecture for curves embedded in their Jacobians was first proved by Kühne. We give a new proof, as a corollary to our main theorem, that does not use equidistribution.

Abstract:In the present paper, we study a new kind of anabelian phenomenon concerning the smooth pointed stable curves in positive characteristic. It shows that the topology of moduli spaces of curves can be understood from the viewpoint of anabelian geometry. We formulate some new anabelian-geometric conjectures concerning tame fundamental groups of curves over algebraically closed fields of characteristic from the point of view of moduli spaces. The conjectures are generalized versions of the Weak Isom-version of the Grothendieck conjecture for curves over algebraically closed fields of characteristic which was formulated by Tamagawa. Moreover, we prove that the conjectures hold for certain points lying in the moduli space of curves of genus .

Abstract: In this article we give a necessary and sufficient condition to characterize projective submanifolds in ${\mathbb P}^N$ with codimensions 2 and 3. The conditions involve the Chern classes of the manifold and a very ample line bundle on the manifold. This generalizes our earlier characterization for hypersurfaces. The higher codimensional cases are proposed as a general question.
Effective Fujita-type theorems for surfaces in arbitrary characteristic

Abstract:Fujita's conjecture is known to be false in positive characteristic. However, if $X$ is a smooth projective variety over a field of positive characteristic and $L$ is an ample divisor on $X$, it is an open question whether linear systems of the form $\lvert K_X+aK_X+bL \rvert$ can be made basepoint-free or very ample with $a$ and $b$ only depending on the dimension of $X$. We conjecture that such $a$ and $b$ exist and prove a strong version of this conjecture for basepoint-freeness, very ampleness, and jet ampleness on smooth projective surfaces in arbitrary characteristic. We do not use the classification of surfaces. In positive characteristic, we prove these positivity properties hold for Schwede's canonical linear system $S^0(X,\omega_X \otimes \mathcal{O}_X(aK_X+bL))$. To prove these results, we prove new results on Seshadri constants, moving Seshadri constants, and Frobenius-Seshadri constants, which in the singular case are new even over the complex numbers.
