Abstract:Time-resolved polarisation measurements of pulsars offer an unique insight into the geometry of their emission regions. Such measure\ ments provide observational constraints on the different models proposed for the pulsar emission mechanisms. Optical polarisation data of the Crab Nebula was obtained from the HST archive. The data set consists of a series of observations of the nebula taken with the HST/ACS. We produced polarisation vector maps of the inner nebula and measured, for the first time, the degree of linear polarisation (P.D.) and the position angle (P.A.) of the pulsar's integrated pulse beam, and of its nearby synchrotron knot. This yielded $\rm P.D.=5.2\pm0.3%$ and $\rm P.A.=105.1\pm1.6\degr$ for the pulsar, and $\rm P.D.=59.0\pm1.9%$ and $\rm P.A.=124.7\pm1.0\degr$ for the synchrotron knot. This is the first high-spatial resolution multi-epoch study of the polarisation of the inner nebula and pulsar. None of the main features in the nebula show evidence of significant polarisation evolution in the period covered by these observations. The results for the pulsar are consistent with those obtained by Słowikowska et al (2009) using the high-time resolution photo-polarimeter OPTIMA, once the DC component has been subtracted. Our results clearly prove that the knot is the main source of the DC component.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study the polarization characteristics inside the Crab Nebula and its pulsar through optical polarimetry. Specifically, the research objectives include: 1. **Examine the polarization changes of pulsars, knots and filaments**: Researchers hope to verify whether the polarization characteristics of these celestial bodies change over time through multi - epoch observation data. This helps to understand the physical characteristics and evolution processes of these celestial bodies. 2. **Accurately map the polarization of the inner Crab Nebula**: In order to determine the polarization level of the Crab Nebula background, researchers have produced polarization vector maps with high spatial resolution. These maps will serve as a reference guide for future time - resolved polarization measurements of the Crab pulsar, especially those made using the Galway Astronomical Stokes Polarimeter (GASP). ### Main methods and techniques - **Data sources**: Researchers obtained 13 observation data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) archive, covering the period from August 2003 to December 2005. - **Polarimetry**: Observations were made using polarizers at three different angles (0°, 60° and 120°), and data were analyzed by IMPOL software to generate polarization maps. - **Photometry**: Photometric measurements were made of the pulsar and synchrotron - radiation knots to correct for the effects of background polarization. - **Error analysis**: Factors such as instrument error, background polarization and signal - to - noise ratio were considered to ensure the accuracy of the measurement results. ### Main findings - **Polarization characteristics of pulsars**: The linear polarization degree of the pulsar was measured to be 5.2±0.3% for the first time, and the position angle was 105.1±1.6°. - **Polarization characteristics of synchrotron - radiation knots**: The linear polarization degree of the synchrotron - radiation knots was measured to be 59.0±1.9%, and the position angle was 124.7±1.0°. - **Polarization changes**: During the observation period, the polarization characteristics of the main features did not change significantly. - **Influence of background polarization**: The research results show that knots are the main source of the DC component. ### Conclusion This study not only provides detailed polarization characteristics of the Crab Nebula and its pulsar, but also provides important reference data for future polarization measurements. Through these data, the emission mechanism of pulsars and the magnetic field structure of the Crab Nebula can be better understood.
