Abstract:The properties of wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) narrowband filters used in tilted collimated light are described. The wavelength shift for s polarization in a low-index-spacer filter is larger than that for p polarization when the filter is tilted, but it is smaller in a high-index-spacer filter. Therefore the passbands of the tilted filter can be centered at the same wavelength for two polarization modes by use of high- and low-index materials, as appropriate, as spacers or by selection of a moderate-index material instead of a spacer. With such spacers, WDM filters used for incident angles of 20 degrees or even greater are constructed. Experimental results agree with the computed ones.

Abstract:In recent decades, high-gain free-electron lasers (FELs) based on linear accelerators has been successfully developed around the world. Advanced beam diagnostics and feedback technology is one of the key factors to further improve the performance of facilities. Both beam position deviation and trajectory tilt can weaken the interaction between the electron beam and photon beam in the undulator, and seriously affect the FEL radiation performance. Existing measurement methods are not sufficient to achieve accurate measurement of beam trajectory tilt between compact undulator segments. Based on the working principle of beam-cavity, this paper proposes a method based on the measurement results of a single cavity BPM signal, which can simultaneously achieve real-time and in situ measurement of beam position and trajectory tilt, thus opening up a new way to improve the efficiency of FEL radiation. The feasibility of the scheme has been verified with the CBPM system in the Shanghai Soft X-ray FEL facility (SXFEL). The preliminary beam experiment results show that the resolution of beam trajectory tilt is better than 13.3 mu rad with a bunch charge of 100 pC.
Aberration Correction for SLM-generated Bessel Beams Propagating Through Tilted Interfaces

Abstract:It is known that an axicon forms an aberrated Bessel beam when the input light is incident at an oblique angle, and the aberration can be removed by adding ellipticity to the axicon. The present work shows that the approach does not recover the Bessel beam along its entire depth of field when an additional tilted optical window is present in the beam path. This situation is increasingly common in advanced applications, where the sample may reside between two glass slides, within a vacuum chamber, or in a gas-tight enclosure. An improved method is introduced in which a single phase map on a spatial light modulator is used to generate the Bessel beam and compensate for both the aberration caused by oblique incidence (equivalent to the tilted axicon) and that due to an additional tilted optical window. Beam-quality metrics are used to quantify the effectiveness of the new method. This work extends the applicability of Bessel beams to other modes of fabrication, imaging, and signal processing.

Abstract:In the Multi beam source (MBS) of our Multi Beam Scanning Electron Microscope (MBSEM), an aperture lens array (ALA) splits the emission cone of the Schottky field emitter into multiple beamlets. When the apertures in the ALA are close to each other, the ALA can introduce aberrations to these beamlets through the electrostatic interaction of neighbouring apertures with each aperture's lens field. When the apertures are arranged in a square grid pattern, the aberration causes fourfold astigmatism. The effect on the beam spot is analyzed through a combination of 3D simulations and experimental validation. To counterbalance the fourfold astigmatism, a correction scheme is proposed in which a slightly non-round profile is applied to the aperture lenses.

Abstract:Abstract The hybrid multi-bend-achromat (MBA) lattice is developed for the demand of higher luminosity at both collider and synchrotron light source. For a hybrid MBA lattice, its negative chromaticities must be corrected with sextupoles, which lead to nonlinearities, thus limiting the dynamic aperture (DA) and momentum aperture (MA). To get efficient injection and long beam lifetime, these nonlinearities must be carefully handled, while it is always difficult to optimize the nonlinearities with limited knobs for the fixed linear lattice. Therefore, conducting chromaticity correction is of importance in linear lattice design that can achieve better nonlinear dynamics. In this paper, three chromaticity correction methods are compared using multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA). A hybrid MBA of 2 GeV, as an example, is designed with a natural emittance of 4.4 nm•rad.

Abstract:Experiments involving nano-focusing or coherence applications require positional stability of a few nanometers and angular stability of tens of nanoradians for all critical optical components along the beamline (in the range of 1 Hz up to 2.5 kHz). Several optical components based on high-precision mechatronics principles with optimized dynamics to cope with those stability requirements have been recently designed and developed at LNLS. An approach combining optical and mechanical design methodologies and processes was applied to new beamline projects. The process starts with optical design using ray-tracing and wave propagation simulations aiming for the specified beam parameters. In a second step, alignment tolerances and stability issues are addressed in the mechanical design of each component. If those requirements cannot be reached in the predictive models based on the available technologies, size and shape of the optics itself or the optical scheme may be redefined restarting the optical simulation. This work applies this beamline design process to the CATERETÊ beamline, which allows for plane-wave CDI experiments. Using side-bounce deflecting cylindrical mirrors and a four-crystal monochromator, a focused beam size of ~ 40 x 30 μm 2 (at 9 keV) with a depth-of-focus of 12 m (plane-wave) and high degree of coherence is obtained. We review key aspects of the optical and mechanical designs. In addition, we further extend the modelling process to enable systematic commissioning support by simulating beam parameters on diagnostic elements located downstream each optical element.

Abstract:This paper proposes a design method for tilted and decentered anamorphic projection optics. In this method, the structure is designed in groups according to the magnification requirements; the anamorphic system section’s primary aberration is analyzed based on vector aberration theory, the tilted and decentered system section’s node behavior is analyzed based on node aberration theory, and spatial ray tracing is used to control the anamorphic optical system’s pupil to be elliptical to realize pupil matching between groups. A mathematical aberration balance and constraint control model is established. The node position is used as an evaluation function such that the node is close to or within the full field, thus controlling the primary aberration for the initial system over the full field. The initial system is constructed with increased optimization potential to satisfy the aberration and structural constraints. The initial structure for the tilted and decentered anamorphic projection optics ( β x = 1 / 4 , β y = 1 / 8 ) is constructed with the coma and astigmatism nodes close to or within the full field. The structure is then optimized to achieve a wavefront root-mean-square error for the EUV tilted and decentered anamorphic objective with NA= 0.55 of better than 0.025λ (λ = 13.5 nm).

Polarization effects on high contrast imaging: measurements on THD2 Bench

Abstract:The spectroscopic study of mature giant planets and low mass planets (Neptune-like, Earth-like) requires instruments capable of achieving very high contrasts ($10^{-10}-10^{-11}$) at short angular separations. To achieve such high performance on a real instrument, many limitations must be overcome: complex component defects (coronagraph, deformable mirror), optical aberrations and scattering, mechanical vibrations and drifts, polarization effects, etc. To study the overall impact on a complete system representative of high contrast instruments, we have developed a test bench at Paris Observatory, called THD2. In this paper, we focus on the polarization effects that are present on the bench which creates differential aberrations between the two linear polarization states. We compare the recorded beam positions of the two polarization states with the predicted from the Goos-Hänchen and Imbert-Fedorov effects, both of which cause spatial shifts and angular deviations of the beam, longitudinal and transverse respectively. Although these effects have already been studied in the literature from the optical and quantum mechanical points of view, their measurement and impact on a complete optical bench are rather rare, although they are crucial for high-contrast instruments. After describing the Goos-Hänchen and Imbert-Fedorov effects and estimating their amplitude on the THD2 bench, we present the protocol we used to measure these effects of polarization on the light beam. We compare predictions and measurements and we conclude on the most limiting elements on our bench polarization-wise.

Redesigning the Jefferson Lab Hall A Beam Line for High Precision Parity Experiments

Abstract:The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) was built with a thermionic electron source and the three original experimental hall lines reflected this. A few years after beam delivery began a parity violation experiment was approved and two polarimeters were installed in the Hall A beam line without consultation with the accelerator physics group. The beam raster system was placed after the new Compton polarimeter, before one accelerator quadrupole and four quadrupoles in the new Moller polarimeter. It was very difficult to meet experimental requirements on envelope functions and raster shape with this arrangement so a member of the accelerator physics group had a sixth quadrupole installed downstream of the Moller polarimeter. All of the parity experiments in Hall A have been run with this still-unsatisfactory configuration. The MOLLER experiment is predicated on achieving a 2% error on a 32 ppb asymmetry. Beam line changes are required to meet the systematic error budget. This paper documents the existing beam line, an interim change which can be accomplished during a annual maintenance down, and the final configuration for MOLLER and subsequent experiments.

Cancellation of RF Coupler-Induced Emittance Due to Astigmatism

Abstract:It is well-known that the electron beam quality required for applications such as FELs and ultra-fast electron diffraction can be degraded by the asymmetric fields introduced by the RF couplers of superconducting linacs. This effect is especially troublesome in the injector where the low energy beam from the gun is captured into the first high gradient accelerator section. Unfortunately modifying the established cavity design is expensive and time consuming, especially considering that only one or two sections are needed for an injector. Instead, it is important to analyze the coupler fields to understand their characteristics and help find less costly solutions for their cancellation and mitigation. This paper finds the RF coupler-induced emittance for short bunches is mostly due to the transverse spatial sloping or tilt of the field, rather than the field's time-dependence. It is shown that the distorting effects of the coupler can be canceled with a static (DC) quadrupole lens rotated about the z-axis.

Abstract:The axis tilt of light beam in optical system would introduce the dispersion of orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectrum. To deal with it, a two-step method is proposed and demonstrated. First, the tilt angle of optical axis is identified with a deduced relation between the tilt angle and the variation of OAM topological charges with different reference axes, which is obtained with the help of a charge coupled device (CCD) camera. In our experiments, the precision of measured tilt angle is about 10-4rad with OAM orders of -3~3. Using the measured angle value, the additional phase delay due to axis tilt can be calculated so that the dispersion of OAM spectrum can be corrected with a simple formula while the optical axis is not aligned. The experimental results indicate that the original OAM spectrum has been successfully extracted for not only the pure OAM state but also the superposed OAM states.

Abstract:Transverse projected emittances of injected beams are strictly limited for synchrotrons with multi-loop injection. Horizontal and vertical emittances easily grow up when beam phase spaces in the xx′ and yy′ planes are coupled. Coupling in beam motion can be induced by tilted quadrupoles and solenoids. Various formalisms have been investigated to describe the beam coupling, which include the matrix and Hamiltonian formalism. In the matrix formalism, the transverse beam motion is parametrized by 4 × 4 beam matrices and the transfer matrices of the elements. Several methods or theories are used to obtain the decoupling matrix, including the equations solving, eigensystem analysis, geometrical method, Courant–Snyder theory and Hamiltonian perturbation theory. We propose an approach to obtain the decoupling matrix based on linear symplectic transformation theory. By adopting several consecutive tilted quadrupoles, the philosophy, as well as the numerical code for solving the decoupling and matching problem, are developed and checked for the general case. The transversely-coupled beam due to a 45∘-rotated radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) can be decoupled in the downstream drift tube linac with only five tilted fixed-gradient permanent-magnet quadrupoles (PMQs), which is suggested to be the minimal number of PMQs for decoupling and matching. The transverse emittance growth is verified to be suppressed below 5% by multi-particle simulation. The error study shows that the transmission rate can reach 98% with a probability of 99%.

Abstract:This article considers the possibility of using a hybrid permanent magnet quadrupole lens with correcting coil for a linear accelerator. The design of the lens was developed and its optimization was carried out to obtain a magnetic field gradient of sufficient magnitude in the aperture. Calculations were carried out in a specialized software package to determine whether the characteristics of the lens meet the requirements. The influence of variation of permanent magnet magnetization on the field quality was investigated.

Abstract:The hybrid multibend achromat (HMBA) lattice concept is adopted in some diffraction-limited storage ring designs, which can permit relatively large on-momentum dynamic aperture and relatively weak sextupoles. In a typical HMBA lattice, the main arc section is constrained by the transverse phase advances making -I transformation for sextupole cancellation. In this paper, a new HMBA lattice concept with sextupole cancellation across a straight section is proposed, where -I is made between adjacent dispersion bumps of two lattice cells. This makes the main arc section free of the phase advance constraint, and as a result, the number of bending magnets (bends) in the lattice cell and the cell tunes can be easily changed, thus providing more choices for lattice design. To achieve the large phase advances required for -I in this new concept, the split bend is used as the matching bend, which is a bend split into two pieces with a quadrupole in between. The split bend also serves to reduce the emittance, and the large phase advances also give low beta functions in the straight section enhancing the insertion device brightness. Besides, for a given emittance goal, this new HMBA lattice can have fewer bends than the typical HMBA lattice due to stronger focusing in bend unit cells, which is beneficial for saving space and suppressing intrabeam scattering effect. Two lattices are given as examples to demonstrate this new concept and show its linear and nonlinear properties and further extension is also discussed.
Improvement of the crossed undulator design for effective circular polarization control in X-ray FELs

Abstract:The production of X-ray radiation with a high degree of circular polarization constitutes an important goal at XFEL facilities. A simple scheme to obtain circular polarization control with crossed undulators has been proposed so far. In its simplest configuration the crossed undulators consist of pair of short planar undulators in crossed position separated by an electromagnetic phase shifter. An advantage of this configuration is a fast helicity switching. A drawback is that a high degree of circular polarization (over 90%) can only be achieved for lengths of the insertion devices significantly shorter than the gain length, i.e. at output power significantly lower than the saturation power level. The obvious and technically possible extension considered in this paper, is to use a setup with two or more crossed undulators separated by phase shifters. This cascade crossed undulator scheme is distinguished, in performance, by a fast helicity switching, a high degree of circular polarization (over 95%) and a high output power level, comparable with the saturation power level in the baseline undulator at fundamental wavelength. We present feasibility study and exemplifications for the LCLS baseline in the soft X-ray regime.

Design of Electrostatic Aberration Correctors for Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy

Abstract:In a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), producing a high-resolution image generally requires an electron beam focused to the smallest point possible. However, the magnetic lenses used to focus the beam are unavoidably imperfect, introducing aberrations that limit resolution. Modern STEMs overcome this by using hardware aberration correctors comprised of many multipole lenses, but these devices are complex, expensive, and can be difficult to tune. We demonstrate a design for an electrostatic phase plate that can act as an aberration corrector. The corrector is comprised of annular segments, each of which is an independent two-terminal device that can apply a constant or ramped phase shift to a portion of the electron beam. We show the improvement in image resolution using an electrostatic corrector. Engineering criteria impose that much of the beam within the probe-forming aperture be blocked by support bars, leading to large probe tails for the corrected probe that sample the specimen beyond the central lobe. We also show how this device can be used to create other STEM beam profiles such as vortex beams and beams with a high degree of phase diversity, which improve information transfer in ptychographic reconstructions.

Abstract:Longitudinal electron-beam diagnostics play a critical role in the operation and control of x-ray free-electron lasers, which rely on parameters such as the current profile, the longitudinal phase space, or the slice emittance of the particle distribution. On the one hand, the femtosecond-scale electron bunches produced at these facilities impose stringent requirements on the resolution achievable with the diagnostics. On the other, research and development of novel accelerator technologies such as beam-driven plasma-wakefield accelerators (PWFA) demand unprecedented capabilities to resolve the centroid offsets in the full transverse plane along the longitudinal bunch coordinate. We present the beam-based commissioning of an advanced X -band transverse-deflection rf structure (TDS) system with the new feature of providing variable polarization of the deflecting force: the PolariX-TDS. By means of a comprehensive campaign of measurements conducted with the prototype, key parameters of the rf performance of the system are validated and a phase-space characterization of an electron bunch is accomplished with a time resolution of 3.3 fs. Abstract:A novel synchrotron X‐ray imaging normalization technique is presented that allows for great mitigation of the presence of the double multilayer monochromator‐induced stripe pattern while maintaining good resolution compared with classic flat‐field correction.In synchrotron X‐ray radiography, achieving high image resolution and an optimal signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) is crucial for the subsequent accurate image analysis. Traditional methods often struggle to balance these two parameters, especially in situ applications where rapid data acquisition is essential to capture specific dynamic processes. For quantitative image data analysis, using monochromatic X‐rays is essential. A double multilayer monochromator (DMM) is successfully used for this aim at the BAMline, BESSY II (Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin, Germany). However, such DMMs are prone to producing an unstable horizontal stripe pattern. Such an unstable pattern renders proper signal normalization difficult and thereby causes a reduction of the SNR. We introduce a novel approach to enhance SNR while preserving resolution: dynamic tilting of the DMM. By adjusting the orientation of the DMM during the acquisition of radiographic projections, we optimize the X‐ray imaging quality, thereby enhancing the SNR. The corresponding shift of the projection during this movement is corrected in post‐processing. The latter correction allows a good resolution to be preserved. This dynamic tilting technique enables the homogenization of the beam profile and thereby effectively reduces noise while maintaining high resolution. We demonstrate that data captured using this proposed technique can be seamlessly integrated into the existing radiographic data workflow, as it does not need hardware modifications to classical X‐ray imaging beamline setups. This facilitates further image analysis and processing using established methods.

Mitigating tilt-induced artifacts in reflection ptychography via optimization of the tilt angles

Abstract:Ptychography in a reflection geometry shows great promise for non-destructive imaging of 3-dimensional nanostructures at the surface of a thick substrate. A major challenge to obtain high quality reflection-ptychographic images under near-grazing conditions has been to calibrate the incidence angle used to straighten the measured curved diffraction patterns in a process referred to as 'tilted plane correction' (TPC). In this work, we leverage the flexibility of automatic differentiation (AD)-based modeling to realise an alternative approach, where the tilted propagation is included into the forward model. Use of AD allows us to jointly optimize the tilt angles with the typical probe and object, eliminating the need for accurate calibration or random search optimization. The approach was validated using datasets generated with an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) beamline based on either a tabletop high harmonic generation (HHG) source or a visible laser. We demonstrate that the proposed approach can converge to a precision of $\pm 0.05°$ for probe beams at $70°$ angle of incidence, possibly precise enough for use as a calibration approach. Furthermore, we demonstrate that optimizing for the tilt angles reduces artifacts and increases reconstruction fidelity. Use of AD not only streamlines the current ptychographic reconstruction process, but should also enable optimization of more complex models in other domains, which will undoubtedly be essential for future advancements in computational imaging.

Abstract:Bi-spectral beam extraction combines neutrons from two different kind of moderators into one beamline, expanding the spectral range and thereby the utilization of an instrument. This idea can be realized by a mirror that reflects long wavelength neutrons from an off-axis colder moderator into a neutron guide aligned with another moderator emitting neutrons with shorter wavelengths which will be transmitted through the mirror. The mirror used in such systems is typically several meters long, which is a severe disadvantage because it reduces the possible length of a focusing device in design concepts requiring a narrow beam at a short distance from the source, as used in many instruments under development for the planned European Spallation Source (ESS). We propose a shortened extraction system consisting of several mirrors, and show that such an extraction system is better suited for combination with a feeder in an eye of the needle design, illustrated here in the context of a possible ESS imaging beamline.
