Abstract:This study investigates the propagation of Stoneley waves at the interface between two semi-infinite, size-dependent couple stress solids, taking into account imperfect interface conditions and governed by Wiechert's conditions. Traditional elasticity theory often fails to accurately describe wave behavior at small wavelengths and high frequencies due to negligence of the microstructural nature of materials. To address this limitation, the consistent couple stress theory (CCST) is employed, incorporating size effects and microstructural considerations to provide a more precise model for Stoneley wave propagation. The interface between the two half-spaces is modeled as imperfect, with degree of imperfection controlled by a dimensionless restraint parameter. This parameter allows a smooth transition from a perfectly bonded interface to different levels of imperfection, influencing the normal, tangential, and rotational stiffness coefficients. Wiechert's conditions, which ensure that shear wave velocities are consistent between the two half-spaces or that certain material parameters maintain constant ratios, are applied to assess their influence on Stoneley wave propagation. Mathematical results are presented graphically to thoroughly examine how the Wiechert parameter, characteristic length scale parameters of both half-spaces, and the restraint parameter affect Stoneley wave propagation, with a particular focus on the stiffness parameters including shear, normal, and rotational stiffness. The study systematically explores how these interface imperfections impact the phase velocity and cutoff wave number of the Stoneley waves, highlighting the complex interaction between material microstructure, interface conditions, and wave behavior.
