Abstract:SIMULATION, Ahead of Print. Modern highly automated and autonomous traffic systems and sub-systems require new approaches to test their functional safety in the context of validation and verification. One approach that has taken a leading role in current research is scenario-based testing. For various reasons, simulation is considered to be the most practicable solution for a wide range of test scenarios. However, this is where many existing simulation systems in research reach their limits. In order to be able to integrate the widest possible range of systems to be tested into the simulation, the use of co-simulation has proven to be particularly useful. In this work, the High-Level Architecture defined in the IEEE 1516-2010 standard is specifically addressed, and a concept is developed that establishes the foundation for the feasible use of scenario-based distributed co-simulation on its basis. The main challenge identified and addressed is the resolution of the double-sided dependency between scenario and simulation models. The solution was to fully automate the generation and instantiation of the simulation environment on the basis of a scenario instance. Finally, the developed concept was implemented as a prototype, and the resulting process for its use is presented here using an example scenario. Based on the experience gained during the creation of the concept and the prototype, the next steps for future work are outlined in conclusion.

Abstract:In order to fulfill the requirements for rapid evaluating of competitive robot(Tele-LightSaber,TLS) system's competitive algorithms and visual servo control,a simulation system for the competitive robot system is designed and implemented based on TLS experimental platform and its operating characteristics,as well as the concept of harmonious distribution of human-computer intelligence.Through system configuration and off-line programming,the simulation system reproduces experimental data and performs error analysis.The results show that the competitive robot simulation system can simulate the actual system,and provide a pre-experimental verification platform for TLS system.

Abstract:The IEEE 802.15.4 standard, which supports lowcost communications, has been applied in a variety of wireless networks. Developing accurate analytical models for the IEEE 802.15.4 medium access control (MAC) protocol is critical for the design and performance evaluation of such networks. Periodic traffic is a common traffic pattern generated in many practical application scenarios, for which most existing analytical models assuming either saturated or random network traffic patterns become inapplicable. In this paper, we develop an accurate and scalable analytical model to analyze the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC protocol with the periodic traffic. Our model can accurately capture the protocol stochastic behavior in each period in scenarios such as with or without retransmissions and with single clear channel assessment (CCA) or double CCAs. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate the proposed model by both transient and aggregate performance evaluations, and the results show that the model captures MAC behavior with periodic traffic accurately. We also discuss about extending the proposed model to account for heterogeneous scenarios and the hidden node problem.

Abstract:Link quality has a significant impact on upper-layer protocols and localization algorithms in wireless sensor networks. The channel and link model in network simulators are oversimplified, which challenges the reliability of the protocols or algorithms. This paper studies the non-ideal characteristics of wireless links including temporal-spatial characteristic, irregular connectivity cell and link asymmetry through a large volume of experiments on Berkeley Mica2 Motes. Models of channel and link quality are derived using a combination of analytical and empirical methods. These models can be implemented to simulators to refine the physical and link layer and help us better understand the performance of upper-layer protocols.

Abstract:A system simulation environment in Matlab/Simulink of RFID is constructed in this paper. Special attention is emphasized on the analog/RF circuit. Negative effects are concerned in the system model, such as phase noise of the local oscillator, TX-RX coupling, reflection of the environment, AWGN noise, DC offset, I/Q mismatch, etc. Performance of the whole system can be evaluated by changing the coding method, parameters of building blocks, and operation distance. Finally, some simulation results are presented in this paper.

Abstract:As the Frequency Hopping (FH) communications technologies being widely applied in wireless communications, it is more and more necessary to organize the networks for FH Radios, while papers on the collision in FH radios is difficult to find. Firstly, the theoretical tolerance of the numbers of FH sequences while building FH communication networks are presented.Then,assuming there are 53 valid frequency points, as an example, the non-repeating collision FH sequences are obtained. Finally, the performance of the FH sequences and the probability of collision are simulated under the condition of asynchronous networking.
LR-FHSS-Sim: A Discrete-Event Simulator for LR-FHSS Networks

Abstract:This work presents the LR-FHSS-Sim, a free and open-source discrete-event simulator for LR-FHSS networks. We highlight the importance of network modeling for IoT coverage, especially when it is needed to capture dynamic network behaviors. Written in Python, we present the LR-FHSS-Sim main structure, procedures, and extensions. We discuss the importance of a modular code, which facilitates the creation of algorithmic strategies and signal-processing techniques for LR-FHSS networks. Moreover, we showcase how to achieve results when considering different packet generation traffic patterns and with a previously published extension. Finally, we discuss our thoughts on future implementations and what can be achieved with them.

Abstract:The design and development of a complex system as well as the simulation of its dynamic behavior are usually involved in multidisciplinary field knowledge. HLA-based collaborative simulation is an effective way to integrate different disciplinary models together in distributed environments. In this paper, the HLA adaptor is adopted to realize model transformation so that models created through commercial software are compatible with HLA. Moreover, in order to solve the difficulty of wrapping ABAQUS software, an ABAQUS engine encapsulation technique is proposed. It is helpful for developing HLA adaptor corresponding to ABAQUS software, and can facilitate the integration of ABAQUS models with HLA-based collaborative simulation platform. Next, a time-advance algorithm based on time-stepped is described, which is the main time-advance way in complex system simulation. Finally, a prototype system is developed to demonstrate the high fidelity of collaborative simulation and the effectiveness of our simulation platform.

Abstract:In ubiquitous computing environment, resources become invisible, heterogeneous and anywhere. Traditional access control mechanism could not handle such dynamic and complex environment. In our proposed work, we view access control mechanism as a non-cooperative game. Thus, a game theoretic model for access control has been proposed to assist such mechanism. Different from traditional one, which depended on complex policies for decision-making, our model uses game theory to evaluate all possible results and select the most expected one as final decision. In the end, a practical example has been presented and its result shows that our access control model is more suitable for nowadays dynamic access control environment.

Abstract:The major objective of this paper is to develop the network security modeling and cyber attack simulation that is able to classify threats, specify attack mechanisms, verify protection mechanisms, and evaluate consequences. To do this, we have employed the advanced modeling and simulation concepts such as System Entity Structure / Model Base framework, DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification) formalism, and experimental frame concept underlying the object-oriented S/W environment. Our approach is to show the difference from others in that (i) it supports a hierarchical and modular modeling environment, (ii) it generates the command-level behavior of cyber attack scenario, (iii) it provides an efficient model building environment based on the experimental frame concept, and (iv) it supports the vulnerability analysis of given node on the network. Simulation test performed on sample network system will illustrate our techniques.

Abstract:Public clouds provide impressive capability through resource sharing. However, recent works have shown that the reuse of IP addresses can allow adversaries to exploit the latent configurations left by previous tenants. In this work, we perform a comprehensive analysis of the effect of cloud IP address allocation on exploitation of latent configuration. We first develop a statistical model of cloud tenant behavior and latent configuration based on literature and deployed systems. Through these, we analyze IP allocation policies under existing and novel threat models. Our resulting framework, EIPSim, simulates our models in representative public cloud scenarios, evaluating adversarial objectives against pool policies. In response to our stronger proposed threat model, we also propose IP scan segmentation, an IP allocation policy that protects the IP pool against adversarial scanning even when an adversary is not limited by number of cloud tenants. Our evaluation shows that IP scan segmentation reduces latent configuration exploitability by 97.1% compared to policies proposed in literature and 99.8% compared to those currently deployed by cloud providers. Finally, we evaluate our statistical assumptions by analyzing real allocation and configuration data, showing that results generalize to deployed cloud workloads. In this way, we show that principled analysis of cloud IP address allocation can lead to substantial security gains for tenants and their users.

Abstract:This paper presents a new model for, or rather a new way of thinking about adaptive, risk—based access control. Our basic premise is that there is always inherent uncertainty and risk in access control decisions that is best addressed in an explicit way. We illustrate this concept by showing how the rationale of the well—known, Bell—Lapadula model based, Multi-Level Security (MLS) access control model could be used to develop a risk-adaptive access control model. This new model is more like a Fuzzy Logic control system [9] than a traditional access control system and hence the name “Fuzzy MLS”. The long version of this paper is published as an IBM Research Report [3].
Reversible Models for Wireless Multi-Channel Multiple Access

Abstract:This paper presents a network layer model for a wireless multiple access system with both persistent and non-persistent users. There is a single access point with multiple identical channels. Each user who wants to send a file first scans a subset of the channels to find one that is idle. If at least one idle channel is found, the user transmits a file over that channel. If no idle channel is found, a persistent user will repeat the access attempt at a later time, while a non-persistent user will leave. This is a useful mathematical model for "coffee shop" situations where a group of persistent users stay near an access point for an extended period of time while non-persistent users come and go. Users have heterogeneous activity behavior, file upload rates, and service durations. The system is a complex multi-dimensional Markov chain. The steady state probabilities are found by exploiting a latent reversibility property. This enables simple expressions for throughput and blocking probability.

Abstract:A majority of scientific publications on wireless networking is (partly) based on network simulation in order to evaluate the presented concepts, algorithms and architectures. In research related to 4G and 5G cellular communication, the system-level simulation SimuLTE is a widely used model. Despite its popularity, no results regarding an experimental validation of this model are publicly available up to now. This paper presents results of a first step in this direction: A small-scale completely shielded cellular testbed based on OpenAirInterface is set up and packet delay and inter-arrival time are measured in several low and high load scenarios. Afterwards, the identical scenarios are modeled in SimuLTE. The comparison of simulation and measurement results indicate a good accuracy of the model for low-load scenarios. However, in particular in overload conditions involving more than one packet source the results differ significantly. Subsequently, several adaptations to the model are proposed which lead to a better agreement of simulation and measurement results in the investigated scenarios.

Modeling and Simulation Strategies of Cryptographic Protocols Based on Finite State Machine

Abstract:In order to evaluate the influence of cryptographic protocols on the property of communication networks, the method of simulation was adopted. Firstly, a 9-tuples abstract model of cryptographic protocols based on Finite State Machine (FSM) was given, and the process for building FSM models was provided. Secondly, by analyzing the FSM simulation theory of OMNeT++ platform, a dynamic behavior algorithm of simulation models was designed. Thirdly, the validity of the modeling and simulation strategies were tested by taking Internet Key Exchange (IKEv2) protocol as an example and designing a simulation scene of Denial of Service (DoS) attack, and then the usability of cryptographic protocols was analyzed. The simulation results show that, the modeling and simulation strategies are valid, and the average time delay of point to point is approximately increased by 12% when using IKEv2 protocol in communication networks.

Abstract:This paper presents a simulation environment, based on the parallel finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, for subject-specific radio channel modeling in wireless body sensor networks (WBSNs). The simulation environment takes into account realistic antenna radiation patterns in channel modeling to analyze their effects on WBSNs. The proposed simulation tool is applied to a study of body communication channels in a hospital environment and the results are validated by site measurement. It is found from our study that radio channel characteristics in WBSNs are subject specific and associated with human genders and body mass indices (BMIs).
