Abstract:The article considers the aesthetic nature, artistic specificity of the existential components of the motif of love, which dominates the flash fiction by Halyna Petrosanyak. The study, based on the analysis of the anthology “Don’t prevent me from saving the world”, elucidates the modern transformation of the symbolic archetypal determinant of the universal understanding of love as the highest value in all its manifestations. The author’s reception of the motif of love is analyzed in correlation with Fromm’s interpretation of human existential needs: in establishing connections, in overcoming oneself, in perceptionof rootedness, in self-identity, in building a life based on a system of values. It has been demonstrated that according to the writer, love is not merely a mechanical sum of regional and mental oral traditions or religious virtues, but their generalization into universal human realities, which form a dialectical unity of worldview, socio-psychological, and aesthetic principles of harmonious human life. And this constant is more often manifested in borderline situations of despair, hopelessness, where the heroes of her stories find themselves. The author seeks to combine often conflicting truths of various people, nations, cultures, religions, and philosophical views in order to emphasize the importance of love in human existence. The stated topic is inexhaustible and multifaceted, promising to inspire various literary, cultural, and philosophical discussions. This study aims to deepen the understanding of the author’s individual style, reflecting both the human features of the author and the main features of our time. In this period fiction as an art form plays a decisiverole in preserving language, spirituality, and national identity, and remains a promising area in literary discourse.

Abstract:The Super-bomb issue contained two problems: feasibility of physical engineering and political need to get H-bomb ASAP. And there were two radically different assessments of these problems by outstanding physicists Hans Bethe and Edward Teller, connected by many years of personal friendship and engaged in the US nuclear project from the very beginning, as the head of the Theoretical Division at Los Alamos and the leading figure in thermonuclear research. This puzzle is solved by using the history of the Soviet H-bomb, in particular the declassified documents on the role of Klaus Fuchs.

Abstract:This article examines nuclear imaginaries in the Arabic-speaking Middle East. It situates people from the Arab world into nuclear thought, looking at how the atomic age rapidly became part of everyday lives. Embracing the idea that reality and fiction are not only deeply intertwined but also co-constitutive, it analyses everyday engagements with the nuclear condition in the aftermath of the bombing of Japan, across a wide range of sources. The article argues that these semi-fictional historical sources-memoirs, pseudo-scientific predictions, speculative reports published in newspapers, popular science books and even rumours-capture an affective moment at the beginning of the atomic age, which was marked by hysteria, widespread speculation and exaggeration. Discussions on nuclear weapons, precisely because the extent of their destruction seems unimaginable, blur the boundaries between 'real' and 'fictional', offering a unique opportunity to reflect on stories of world politics and on the tensions within historical International Relations.

Abstract:The aim of the article is to identify the dialectics of love and art, their mutual determination. The emergence and development of self-consciousness has paved a distance of the homo sapiens from his “lesser brothers” — and where once, long ago there was only sexual attraction inherent in nature, man created love as a life-meaning value, which in art, especially in artistic literature and music, presents the dominant theme. The relationship between man and woman, termed as love, becomes such in their mutual desire to make each other happy. The complexity of the intellectual and sensual worlds that is love turns the realization of this aspiration into a creative process. This is how a “work of life” that possesses aesthetic value is created. In such cases, the intensity of feelings becomes for the artist the “muse” that inspires him to take up the pen and create a work of art. An artistic work reproduces the uniqueness and beauty of human feelings, transmits them into the world and transforms them into the heritage of culture. Since love is not a gift of nature, but the result of human education and upbringing, art is a factor that forms the emotional sphere of the reader’s and the listener’s consciousness by immersing them into the experiences of the protagonists. Thereby, love and art, impacting each other, increase the potential of goodness and beauty in the world.

The Chernobyl explosion initiated the disintegration of the corrupt Communist regime—a regime which had been deemed unshakeable in the USSR.

Reflecting the Cold War in “Atomic Heart”

Abstract:Introduction. The present study is devoted to the study of the influence of artifacts of the symbolic politics of the USA and the USSR on the positioning of the respective socio-political systems in modern video games. The article includes the content of the “Atomic Heart” video game studies and analysis from the point of view of the theory of social memory and symbolic politics. Methods and materials. A certain number of methods were used to solve the actual tasks in the article. In particular, case-study methods and elements of structural and comparative analysis were used. Analysis. The game “Atomic Heart” was chosen as a research case. The choice of the case is due to the high popularity of this game both within Russia and internationally, as well as the connection of the plot to the topic of the confrontation between the USSR and the United States after World War II and the presence of a wide representation of the symbolism of this conflict inside the game (up to the reproduction of real campaign materials). On the one hand, the ways of representing the USA in Soviet propaganda and their interpretation by video game developers are studied. On the other hand, the positioning of the Soviet Union by game designers and screenwriters by exploiting the images and stereotypes of perception that were formed in Western culture during the Cold War is examined. Results. The author concludes that, when forming the in-game symbols, the developers actively exploited the resource of Soviet aesthetics; however, Cold War narratives in Western mass culture works played a significant role in shaping the project’s emotional, semantic, and value content. The main reason for this decision was most likely economic, as the game was created with the expectation of generating the main profit in foreign markets as a commercial product. However, this decision actually contributed to the resuscitation of the functional qualities of the symbolic legacy of the Cold War and the use of its narratives to correct the perceptions of the target audience about the USSR and its role in the confrontation between the two blocs.

Abstract:This Introduction opens the book {\sl Standing Together in Troubled Times} which presents a story of friendship between Wolfgang Pauli, one of the greatest theoretical physicists of the 20th century, and Charlotte Houtermans. They met at the very onset of the quantum era, in the late 1920s in Germany where Charlotte was a physics student at Göttingen University. At that time Göttingen was right at the heart of groundbreaking developments in physics. Both Pauli and Houtermans personally knew major participants in the quantum revolution. Caught between two evils -- German National Socialism and Soviet Communism -- Charlotte Houtermans would have likely perished if it were not for the brotherhood of physicists: Niels Bohr, Wolfgang Pauli, Albert Einstein, James Franck, Max Born, Robert Oppenheimer and many other noted scientists who tried to save friends and colleagues (either leftist sympathizers or Jews) who were in mortal danger of becoming entrapped in a simmering pre-WWII Europe. This book is based on newly discovered documents from the Houtermans family archive, including Pauli's numerous letters to Houtermans, her correspondence with other great physicists, her diaries, and interviews with her children. Almost all documents presented in this book are being published for the first time.

Abstract:The article considers the Holocaust reflection in world literature and popular authors as the best painters of the Holocaust repressions. Naturally, the Holocaust is a trauma which cannot ever be restored, a gap that cannot be bridged. Down to the present day, this remains an important topic for discussion. Despite the overwhelming persecution and death that surrounded the Jewish nation, hundreds of thousands of Jews survived the nightmare of the Holocaust. In order to integrate the past in their lives, survivors want to testify and/or write down their experiences. These stories of survival provide the only glimpse of ‘goodness’ that comes from the terrible story of the Holocaust. It proves that, even in history’s darkest hour, there was a glimmer of hope; that in a world that seemed to be falling apart, good still had the capacity to overcome evil. All stories written on the destiny and sufferings of the Jewish nation are worth analysis. However, we took only those which are in the form of confession. The chosen novels can be classified by the types of the central heroes and heroes have been divided into subgroups according to their age, nation, and, of course, the gender. The article aims to reaffirm the importance of the novels by using three literary approaches — historical, biographical and social. The biographical approach is taken for the analysis to identify the link between the work and the authors, who build a story on the basis of their own memories and real-life experience. Furthermore, the socio-historical problems highlighted in the novels are very relevant, since they still exist in modern societies in one or another form. The article reflects how even one novel encompasses morality, dignity, humanity issues and at the same time reveals the author’s position related to the indifference of the world regarding cruelty and evading responsibility for anti-human crimes along with how to avoid them in the near future.

Abstract:To reveal the theme of Russia after October, 1917, Nickolai Ostrovsky's book «How steel was tempered» is one of the most significant. In it, in its purest form, there is a portrait of an ideal revolutionary – a Bolshevik, merciless not only to the enemy, but to himself and others as well, a man, from whom, according to the poet's figurative expression, there could be made the strongest nails in the world. The book was enthusiastically received by the thirteen million army of party members and Komsomol members. For some, Pavel Korchagin was an ideal to emulate, for others – an image that reinforced their own myths about past heroic deeds, allowing them to settle warmly in the present. For the authorities, the story, cleared by censorship from the Bolshevik democracy of the first years, was an artistic forerunner of the future Stalinist «Short course of the AUCP history». One of the most thoughtful Soviet literary critics, Leo Anninsky, considered the story to be a story about people «engaged to an idea». In a sense, this is true. However, the engagement prevented both Ostrovsky and his Soviet interpreter from seeing the real historical process in its tragic depth and contradictions. For the hero Pavel Korchagin, there are neither the beginnings of Stalinist totalitarianism, nor the tragedy of a collectivized, starving village. Living as if out of time, he preaches the same thing – a class struggle that never fades for a moment. It seems that the fire of struggle will be extinguished and the hero's life will be interrupted. In fact, this is not allowed to happen: the constant intensity of the class struggle, which, as Stalin said, will grow more and more as we move towards socialism, is the secret of Soviet totalitarianism, represented and justified in an artistic form by Nikolai Ostrovsky.

Abstract:This paper surveys the Chernobyl nuclear accident on 26th April 1986, and reconsiders the effect and impact of the catastrophe. It examines in turn the conceptof “peaceful uses of atomic energy” which has served as the theoretical backbone for the construction of nuclear power plants during the Cold War period, transformations of Soviet energy policy, nuclear accidents in the Soviet Union before Chernobyl, the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident, its victims and destruction of nature, governmental management of the crisis and the lessons learned. During the 1960’s~70’s, the Soviet Union, one of the leaders in the development of atomic power, was forced to reexamine its energy policy that was on traditional energy resources such as gas and coal and began an intense program of nuclear power plant construction. Though some nuclear accidents occurred, these did not deter the Soviet government from continuing to promote its message of safe nuclear energy. In Ukraine, where nuclear power plants were particularly abundant, the Chernobyl tragedy happened with the most appalling psychological affects on humans and the environment. As to the causes of the Chernobyl accident, the explanation stressing the errors and mistakes of the power plant operators contrasted with the view that put the main blame on deficiencies on the construction design of the reactor. When one considered the tremendous destruction of life and environment that was caused by human carelessness, errors and mistakes, one is forced to conclude that nuclear power is not astable energy-producing option. The Soviet government was severely criticized for its incompetence and mismanagement in the Chernobyl catastrophe. Some people believed that such a disaster could only have happened under a rigid political system such as the Soviet Union. However, the crisis management of the Japanese government after the Fukusima nuclear accident of 2011 was no more reliable and trustworthy. That being said, the danger of nuclear power is not related with the type of political system is. The study of Chernobyl must not be the ‘chronicle of the future’, as the subtitle of a book by SvetlanaAleksievich about Chernobyl’s victims is called.

One must admit, albeit reluctantly, that the nuclear balance between these two powers deserves at least partial credit for the absence of all-out hostilities for the longest period in recent history. But even in the absence of total conflict, the increase of potential devastation and the growth in the number of states possessing nuclear weapons have created tensions that increasingly overshadow all other concerns of mankind. Many hold science, which led to the release of nuclear energy, responsible for this evolution. But others look to science for the tools to reverse this threat to all humanity.

Abstract:In 1946, John Hersey, an employee of The New Yorker magazine, proposed the reality of the bomb that was thrown into Hiroshima for the agenda, and interviewed six coincidental survivors in the area and published the records within the frame of a truth-based narrative form. This work, which may be considered as a product of ‘literary journalism' or a reflection of ‘transmedia' or a ‘cross-media', is a true-based narrative in which six survivors' dramatic lives are constructed and embedded successfully. The study aims to describe and analyze the narrative structures in which the author tries to influence people in Hiroshima book, and the relationship between these structures will be tried to be revealed through narrative analysis, and a certain contribution to the narrative literature is targeted as well.

Abstract:The Trinity test of July 16, 1945 marked the scientific apex of the Manhattan Project. Often recognized as the symbolic birth of the nuclear age, Trinity's multifaceted legacy remains just as captivating and complex as it did 75 years ago. This paper examines why the test was necessary from a technical standpoint, shows how Los Alamos scientists planned the event, and explores the physical and emotional aftermaths of Trinity. The author also uses rarely accessed original records to reconstruct the story of Trinity's health hazards, as seen through the eyes of radiation technicians and medical doctors as events unfolded. Trinity was conducted as the Potsdam Conference began, weeks after the collapse of Nazi Germany. It was considered necessary to let President Harry S. Truman know whether the United States possessed a nuclear capability ahead of his negotiations with Joseph Stalin, the Soviet premier. The author examines the competing priorities that drove the timetable for the test: international politics, security and safety. Three weeks after Trinity, a gun-assembled enriched-uranium bomb called Little Boy was used against the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later, Fat Man, a weaponized version of the imploding Trinity device, was dropped on Nagasaki. The author briefly examines these strikes and what impact they may have had on the Japanese surrender. The paper concludes by examining the legacy of the Trinity test 75 years into the age it helped usher in.

Love and hope: affective labor and posthuman relations in Klara and The Sun

Abstract:If super AI becomes possible, what could be the relationship between humans and non-humans? Does love play an important role in it? What is the meaning of true love? Noted for writing “novels of great emotional force”, Kazuo Ishiguro in his most recent speculative fiction Klara and the Sun imagines a posthuman world in which enhanced transhumans, super AIs and ordinary human beings coexist and interact with each other. By focusing on the Artificial Friend Klara’s complex emotions, such as her sensitivity, pathos and altruistic love, which is in strong contrast to the possessive, overprotective, and self-centered love of Josie’s mother, this essay uses Michael Hardt’s concept of affective labor to ponder on the question of parental love and human and non-human relationship. It argues that as a companion robot, Klara’s affective labor makes her more humanlike, and that in the posthuman world where artificial intelligence can be ever more potent and inescapably change the human relations, the key to more constructive relationship is to cherish hope and show benevolent love to one another, whether they are humans, or non-humans.

Abstract:We outline the course of affairs in the experimental and theoretical fields of nuclear and particle physics which determined its finale, and give several fragmentary remarks on its present state. The essay tells about events and their participants, known from the literature, but presented here from the perspective of a person whose 50-year labor activity, 1972--2022, proceeded at the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Physics, Sarov. In order to predict the fate of particle physics and related astrophysics and cosmology, it is useful to become aware of the facts about another branch of physics that has already gone through its decline $\sim 30$ years ago, the physics of nuclear weapons. These facts are important not in themselves, but as evidence of the growing problems of science and social life, which are not only far from a satisfactory solution, but have not even been the subject of any serious discussion.

Non-heroic heroes of the dystopia: the novel Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro in the context of modern literature

Abstract:The article examines the features of the characters of the heroes of Kazuo Ishiguro's novel "Don't Let Me Go" in the context of the dystopia of the 21st century. Based on a comparison of the dystopias of the 20th century on the one hand, and dystopias of the 21st century on the other hand, the tendencies of the development of this genre and the principles of reflection of the world outlook of the heroes are traced. It is noted that a distinctive feature of 20th century dystopias is the conflict of heroes with the existing regime, while in the 21st century dystopias less attention is paid to this conflict than the problem of the psychological state of characters who have already realized that it is useless to fight the ideology of society. The purpose of the article is to study the character’s accentuation, previously not considered, of the characters of Kadzuo Ishiguro’s novel Don’t Let Me Go in the context of modern literature. The heroine of the novel Katie S. is endowed with intellectual and moral qualities that, as it turned out, cannot change her fate as a “second class” person. Her friends Ruth and Tommy also have a non-standard outlook: each of them has their own inclinations and their own preferences. This aspect of the novel can be considered as protest, directed against the social structure that divides people into "first-class" and "second-class". One of the main conclusions: modern society, having become a "consumer society", loses the main feature of humanism – love and respect for every representative of humanity, depriving a person of will and thirst for life that was given by nature. When analyzing Kazuo Ishiguro's novel Don't Let Me Go, critics often draw attention to the "Japanese" syndrome that is present in the English characters. The formula of "collective national thinking" does exist in the work, but it seems to be insufficiently covered in literary criticism. In our opinion, "Japanese" should be considered in two aspects: a) as traditional service to duty, acceptance of fate and humility in Japanese culture; b) as a lack of passionarity and a syndrome of learned helplessness, the features of which we observe in many modern "non-Japanese".

It examines in turn the conceptof “peaceful uses of atomic energy” which has served as the theoretical backbone for the construction of nuclear power plants during the Cold War period, transformations of Soviet energy policy, nuclear accidents in the Soviet Union before Chernobyl, the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident, its victims and destruction of nature, governmental management of the crisis and the lessons learned. During the 1960’s~70’s, the Soviet Union, one of the leaders in the development of atomic power, was forced to reexamine its energy policy that was on traditional energy resources such as gas and coal and began an intense program of nuclear power plant construction. Though some nuclear accidents occurred, these did not deter the Soviet government from continuing to promote its message of safe nuclear energy. In Ukraine, where nuclear power plants were particularly abundant, the Chernobyl tragedy happened with the most appalling psychological affects on humans and the environment. As to the causes of the Chernobyl accident, the explanation stressing the errors and mistakes of the power plant operators contrasted with the view that put the main blame on deficiencies on the construction design of the reactor. When one considered the tremendous destruction of life and environment that was caused by human carelessness, errors and mistakes, one is forced to conclude that nuclear power is not astable energy-producing option. The Soviet government was severely criticized for its incompetence and mismanagement in the Chernobyl catastrophe. Some people believed that such a disaster could only have happened under a rigid political system such as the Soviet Union. However, the crisis management of the Japanese government after the Fukusima nuclear accident of 2011 was no more reliable and trustworthy. That being said, the danger of nuclear power is not related with the type of political system is. The study of Chernobyl must not be the ‘chronicle of the future’, as the subtitle of a book by SvetlanaAleksievich about Chernobyl’s victims is called.
