Abstract:Lattice parameter of metastable high-pressure phase of zinc oxide, rock-salt ZnO was measured in the 10-300 K temperature range using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. No phase transition was observed down to 10 K. The lattice parameter of rock-salt ZnO was found to increase from 4.266 Å in the 10-80 K range up to 4.2752(3) Å at 298 K, while the volume thermal expansion coefficient increases from slight negative values below 40 K up to 4.77\times10^-5 K^-1 at 298 K.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study the thermal expansion behavior of rock - salt ZnO with a cubic rock - salt structure in the low - temperature range (10 - 300 K). Specifically, the authors focus on: 1. **Change of lattice parameters at low temperatures**: The lattice parameters at different temperatures were measured by synchrotron radiation X - ray powder diffraction technology to understand their trend of change with temperature. 2. **Phase - change behavior**: To explore whether ZnO with a cubic rock - salt structure will undergo a phase change under low - temperature conditions, especially whether it can maintain its structural stability after recovering from high pressure to normal pressure. 3. **Calculation of the coefficient of thermal expansion**: A formula describing the relationship between lattice parameters and temperature was obtained by fitting experimental data, and the linear and volumetric coefficients of thermal expansion were calculated therefrom. ### Main findings - In the range of 10 - 80 K, the lattice parameters remain almost unchanged; while above 80 K, the lattice parameters begin to increase significantly. - The volumetric coefficient of thermal expansion gradually increases from nearly zero (10 - 40 K) to reach \(4.77\times 10^{-5}\, \text{K}^{-1}\) at 298 K. - No phase - change phenomenon was observed. Even at extremely low temperatures (down to 10 K), the sample still maintains the cubic rock - salt structure. - The experimental results show that the coefficient of thermal expansion of cubic rock - salt ZnO at room temperature is approximately three times that of the stable - state hexagonal wurtzite structure (w - ZnO). ### Formula summary 1. Relationship between lattice parameters and temperature change: \[ a = 4.26617(9)\times\left[1 - 2.49(36)\times 10^{-6}\times T+ 3.09(12)\times 10^{-8}\times T^{2}\right] \] 2. Linear coefficient of thermal expansion: \[ \alpha=- 2.48(2)\times 10^{-6}+6.1705(11)\times 10^{-8}\times T \] 3. Volumetric coefficient of thermal expansion: \[ \beta = 3\times\alpha \] These research results provide an important experimental basis for understanding the physical properties of high - pressure - phase ZnO and also lay the foundation for further exploring its potential applications.
