Abstract:We consider the theory of the glass phase and jamming of hard spheres in the large space dimension limit. Building upon the exact expression for the free-energy functional obtained previously, we find that the Random First Order Transition (RFOT) scenario is realized here with two thermodynamic transitions: the usual Kauzmann point associated with entropy crisis, and a further transition at higher pressures in which a glassy structure of micro-states is developed within each amorphous state. This kind of glass-glass transition into a phase dominating the higher densities was described years ago by Elisabeth Gardner, and may well be a generic feature of RFOT. Micro states that are small excitations of an amorphous matrix -- separated by low entropic or energetic barriers -- thus emerge naturally, and modify the high pressure (or low temperature) limit of the thermodynamic functions.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the properties of the amorphous hard - sphere system near the glassy phase and the jamming point in high - dimensional space. Specifically, the authors are concerned with whether there is a specific pressure or density range in such a system, within which a phenomenon called the Gardner transition occurs. This phenomenon involves the development of a glassy structure of micro - states within each amorphous state, resulting in a transition from one glassy state to another glassy state with different properties. This transition modifies the thermodynamic functions in the high - pressure or low - temperature limit and may be a universal feature in the framework of the Random First - Order Transition (RFOT). The paper studied this problem through exact theoretical methods, using the exact expression of the free - energy functional obtained previously, and explored the glassy - phase and jamming behaviors of the hard - sphere system in the high - dimensional limit. The research results show that the RFOT scenario indeed realizes two thermodynamic transitions in this system: one is the Kauzmann point related to the entropy crisis, and the other is the glass - glass transition at a higher pressure, which was described by Elisabeth Gardner many years ago. In addition, the paper also explored how these small excited states (i.e., micro - states) naturally emerge and how they affect the thermodynamic functions in the high - pressure (or low - temperature) limit. In summary, the paper aims to gain an in - depth understanding of the complex behavior of the amorphous hard - sphere system in high - dimensional space, especially the mechanism of the Gardner transition and its impact on the glassy phase and the jamming point.
