Abstract:Despite an interparticle potential consisting of only an infinite repulsion at contact, the thermodynamics and dynamics of concentrated dispersions of hard spheres are not yet fully understood. Colloidal poly-(methyl methacrylate) spheres with a grafted layer of poly-(12-hydroxy stearic acid) (PMMA-PHSA) comprise a common model for investigating structural, dynamic, and rheological properties. These highly monodisperse spheres can be index matched in nonaqueous solvents, reducing van der Waals forces and allowing characterization via Light scattering. In this work, we test the behavior of these dispersions against expectations for hard spheres through observations of the phase behavior, x-ray densitometry of equilibrium sediments, and Zimm viscometry. We set the effective hard sphere volume fraction by the disorder-order transition, thereby accounting for the polymer layer, any swelling due to the solvent, and polydispersity. The melting transition then occurs close to the expected value and the equation of state for the fluid phase, extracted from the equilibrium sediment with x-ray densitometry, conforms to the Carnahan-Starling equation. However, the osmotic pressure of the crystalline phase lies slightly above that calculated for a single fee crystal even after accounting for polydispersity. Likewise the high shear viscosity of the fluid compares well with other hard sphere dispersions, but the low shear viscosity for PMMA-PHSA hard spheres exceeds those for polystyrene and silica hard spheres, e.g., a relative viscosity of 45+/-3 at phi=0.50 rather than 24. Our low shear viscosities are consistent with other PMMA-PHSA data after rescaling for both the polymer layer thickness and polydispersity, and may represent the true hard sphere curve. We anticipate that the equation of state for the crystal deviates due to polycrystallinity or a direct effect of polydispersity.

Abstract:The hard-sphere disorder-order transition serves as the paradigm for crystallization. We used time-resolved Bragg light scattering from the close-packed planes to measure the kinetics of nucleation and growth of colloidal hard-sphere crystals. The effects of gravity are revealed by comparison of the experiments in microgravity and normal gravity. Crystallites grow faster and larger in microgravity, and the coarsening between crystallites is suppressed by gravity. The face-centered-cubic structure was strongly indicated as being the stable structure for hard-sphere crystals. For a sample with a volume fraction of 0.552, the classic nucleation and growth picture is followed.

Abstract:The freezing transition in a classical three-dimensional system of parallel hard cubes with rounded edges is studied by computer simulation and fundamental-measure density functional theory. By switching the rounding parameter s from zero to one, one can smoothly interpolate between cubes with sharp edges and hard spheres. The equilibrium phase diagram of rounded parallel hard cubes is computed as a function of their volume fraction and the rounding parameter s. The second order freezing transition known for oriented cubes at s = 0 is found to be persistent up to s = 0.65. The fluid freezes into a simple-cubic crystal which exhibits a large vacancy concentration. Upon a further increase of s, the continuous freezing is replaced by a first-order transition into either a sheared simple cubic lattice or a deformed face-centered cubic lattice with two possible unit cells: body-centered orthorhombic or base-centered monoclinic. In principle, a system of parallel cubes could be realized in experiments on colloids using advanced synthesis techniques and a combination of external fields.

Abstract:We study the possibility of the helium decoupling in the stellar wind of sigma Ori E. To obtain reliable wind parameters for this star we first calculate an NLTE wind model and derive wind mass-loss rate and terminal velocity. Using corresponding force multipliers we study the possibility of helium decoupling. We find that helium decoupling is not possible for realistic values of helium charge (calculated from NLTE wind models). Helium decoupling seems only possible for a very low helium charge. The reason for this behaviour is the strong coupling between helium and hydrogen. We also find that frictional heating becomes important in the outer parts of the wind of sigma Ori E due to the collisions between some heavier elements and the passive components -- hydrogen and helium. For a metallicity ten times lower than the solar one both hydrogen and helium decouple from the metals and may fall back onto the stellar surface. However, this does not explain the observed chemical peculiarity since both these components decouple together from the absorbing ions. Although we do not include the effects of the magnetic field into our models, we argue that the presence of a magnetic field will likely not significantly modify the derived results because in such case model equations describe the motion parallel to the magnetic field.

Abstract:We present a simple density functional theory for the solid phases of systems of particles interacting via soft-core potentials. In particular, we apply the theory to particles interacting via repulsive point Yukawa and Gaussian pair potentials. We find qualitative agreement with the established phase diagrams for these systems. The theory is able to account for the bcc-fcc solid transitions of both systems and the re-entrant melting that the Gaussian system exhibits.

Abstract:The local structure of disordered jammed packings of monodisperse spheres without friction, generated by the Lubachevsky-Stillinger algorithm, is studied for packing fractions above and below 64%. The structural similarity of the particle environments to fcc or hcp crystalline packings (local crystallinity) is quantified by order metrics based on rank-four Minkowski tensors. We find a critical packing fraction φ(c)≈0.649, distinctly higher than previously reported values for the contested random close packing limit. At φ(c), the probability of finding local crystalline configurations first becomes finite and, for larger packing fractions, increases by several orders of magnitude. This provides quantitative evidence of an abrupt onset of local crystallinity at φ(c). We demonstrate that the identification of local crystallinity by the frequently used local bond-orientational order metric q(6) produces false positives and thus conceals the abrupt onset of local crystallinity. Since the critical packing fraction is significantly above results from mean-field analysis of the mechanical contacts for frictionless spheres, it is suggested that dynamic arrest due to isostaticity and the alleged geometric phase transition in the Edwards framework may be disconnected phenomena.

Abstract:The best-understood crystal ordering transition is that of two-dimensional freezing, which proceeds by the rapid eradication of lattice defects as the temperature is lowered below a critical threshold. But crystals that assemble on closed surfaces are required by topology to have a minimum number of lattice defects, called disclinations, that act as conserved topological charges; consider the 12 pentagons on a soccer ball or the 12 pentamers in a viral capsid. Moreover, crystals assembled on curved surfaces can spontaneously develop additional defects to alleviate the stress imposed by the curvature. How then can we have crystallization on a sphere, the simplest curved surface where it is impossible to eliminate these defects? Here we show that freezing on a sphere proceeds by the formation of a single, encompassing "continent," which forces defects into 12 isolated "seas" with the same icosahedral symmetry as soccer balls and viruses. We use this broken symmetry - aligning the vertices of an icosahedron with the defect seas and unfolding the faces onto a plane - to construct a new order parameter that reveals the underlying long-range orientational order of the lattice. These results further our understanding of the thermodynamic and mechanical properties of naturally occurring structures, such as viral capsids, lipid vesicles, and bacterial s-layers, and show that the spontaneous sequestration and organization of defects can produce mechanical and dynamical inhomogeneities in otherwise homogeneous materials.

Abstract:The properties of a macroscopic assembly of weakly-repulsive bosons at zero temperature are well described by Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field theory. According to this formalism the system exhibits a quantum transition from superfluid to cluster supersolid as a function of pressure. We develop a thermodynamically rigorous treatment of the different phases of the system by adopting a variational formulation of the condensate wave function --- represented as a sum of Gaussians --- that is amenable to exact manipulations. Not only is this description quantitatively accurate, but it is also capable to predict the order (and sometimes even the location) of the transition. We consider a number of crystal structures in two and three dimensions and determine the phase diagram. Depending on the lattice, the transition from fluid to solid can be first-order or continuous, a lower coordination entailing a milder transition. In two dimensions, crystallization would occur at the same pressure on three distinct lattices (square, honeycomb, and stripes), all providing metastable phases with respect to the triangular crystal. A similar scenario holds in three dimensions, where the simple-cubic and diamond crystals also share a common melting point; however, the stable crystal at low pressure is typically fcc. Upon compression and depending on the shape of the potential, the fcc crystal may transform into hcp. We conclude by sketching a theory of the solid-fluid interface and of quantum nucleation of the solid from the fluid.

Abstract:We consider the theory of the glass phase and jamming of hard spheres in the large space dimension limit. Building upon the exact expression for the free-energy functional obtained previously, we find that the Random First Order Transition (RFOT) scenario is realized here with two thermodynamic transitions: the usual Kauzmann point associated with entropy crisis, and a further transition at higher pressures in which a glassy structure of micro-states is developed within each amorphous state. This kind of glass-glass transition into a phase dominating the higher densities was described years ago by Elisabeth Gardner, and may well be a generic feature of RFOT. Micro states that are small excitations of an amorphous matrix -- separated by low entropic or energetic barriers -- thus emerge naturally, and modify the high pressure (or low temperature) limit of the thermodynamic functions.

Packing hard spheres with short-range attraction in infinite dimension: Phase structure and algorithmic implications

Abstract:We study, via the replica method of disordered systems, the packing problem of hard-spheres with a square-well attractive potential when the space dimensionality, d, becomes infinitely large. The phase diagram of the system exhibits reentrancy of the liquid-glass transition line, two distinct glass states and a glass-to-glass transition, much similar to what has been previously obtained by Mode-Coupling Theory, numerical simulations and experiments. The presence of the phase reentrance implies that for a suitable choice of the intensity and attraction range, high-density sphere packings more compact than the one corresponding to pure hard-spheres can be constructed in polynomial time in the number of particles (at fixed, large d) for packing fractions smaller than 6.5 d 2^{-d}. Although our derivation is not a formal mathematical proof, we believe it meets the standards of rigor of theoretical physics, and at this level of rigor it provides a small improvement of the lower bound on the sphere packing problem.

Abstract:We investigate the crystal structure of classical systems of spherical particles with an embedded point dipole at T=0. The ferroelectric ground state energy is calculated using generalizations of the Ewald summation technique. Due to the reduced symmetry compared to the nonpolar case the crystals are never strictly cubic. For the Stockmayer (i.e., Lennard-Jones plus dipolar) interaction three phases are found upon increasing the dipole moment: hexagonal, body-centered orthorhombic, and body-centered tetragonal. An even richer phase diagram arises for dipolar soft spheres with a purely repulsive inverse power law potential $\sim r^{-n}$. A crossover between qualitatively different sequences of phases occurs near the exponent $n=12$. The results are applicable to electro- and magnetorheological fluids. In addition to the exact ground state analysis we study freezing of the Stockmayer fluid by density-functional theory.

Finding the Differences: Classical Nucleation Perspective on Homogeneous Melting and Freezing of Hard Spheres

Abstract:By employing brute-force molecular dynamics, umbrella sampling, and seeding simulations, we investigate homogeneous nucleation during melting and freezing of hard spheres. We provide insights into these opposing phase transitions from the standpoint of classical nucleation theory. We observe that melting has both a lower driving force and a lower interfacial tension than freezing. The lower driving force arises from the vicinity of a spinodal instability in the solid and from a strain energy. The lower interfacial tension implies that the Tolman lengths associated with melting and freezing have opposite signs, a phenomenon that we interpret with Turnbull's rule. Despite these asymmetries, the nucleation rates for freezing and melting are found to be comparable.

Abstract:Computer simulations of the fluid-to-solid phase transition in the hard sphere system were instrumental for our understanding of crystallization processes. But while colloid experiments and theory have been predicting the stability of several binary hard sphere crystals for many years, simulations were not successful to confirm this phenomenon. Here, we report the growth of binary hard sphere crystals isostructural to Laves phases, AlB$_2$, and NaZn$_{13}$ in simulation directly from the fluid. We analyze particle kinetics during Laves phase growth using event-driven molecular dynamics simulations with and without swap moves that speed up diffusion. The crystallization process transitions from nucleation and growth to spinodal decomposition already deep within the fluid-solid coexistence regime. Finally, we present packing fraction-size ratio state diagrams in the vicinity of the stability regions of three binary crystals.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) for hard bodies provides a theoretical description of the effect of particle shape on inhomogeneous fluids. We present improvements of the DFT framework fundamental measure theory (FMT) for hard bodies and validate these improvements for hard spherocylinders. To keep the paper self-contained, we first discuss the recent advances in FMT for hard bodies that lead to the introduction of fundamental mixed measure theory (FMMT) in our previous paper (2015 Europhys. Lett. 109 26003). Subsequently, we provide an efficient semi-empirical alternative to FMMT and show that the phase diagram for spherocylinders is described with similar accuracy in both versions of the theory. Finally, we present a semi-empirical modification of FMMT whose predictions for the phase diagram for spherocylinders are in excellent quantitative agreement with computer simulation results.

They are found to have a fluid-fluid transition at high density. As the range of the attraction tends to zero, the density at the critical point tends towards the random-close-packing density of hard spheres.

The Geometry behind the Two-Dimensional Hard-Disk 'Glass Transition'

Abstract:The relation between dynamics and structure in systems of bidisperse 2D hard disks with apparent arrested dynamics is considered using numerical simulations and Voronoi analysis. Surprisingly, the suspensions systematically appear to fall out of equilibrium at an area fraction of {\phi} {\approx} 0.777 over a wide range of disk-size ratios. This is in close agreement with the experimental findings of [Lozano et al., Nat. Mater. 18, 1118 (2019)] for a single large-to-small size ratio of {\approx} 1.4. Even inside the crystalline region of the state diagram there are weak structural signatures present for this area fraction. Adopting a granocentric viewpoint, this allows for the identification of a geometric feature - a floret pentagonal tiling - that could underlie the observations. That is, this tiling has an area fraction of {\phi} {\approx} 0.777343, which closely matches the apparent 'glass transition' value of {\phi}. The connection suggests that a zero-entropy, ground-state tiling can influence the dynamics of the system at finite temperature, in a manner that may be similar to the way in which geometry in foam-like tissue models induces a jamming transition. A geometric ground-state argument also appears to explain the change in local dynamics observed by [Li et al., Nature 587, 225 (2020)], when a honeycomb lattice is used as the reference. Combined these findings change how to view high-{\phi} 2D fluids, namely as being influenced by the presence of zero-entropy geometric ground states. The proposed connection leads to an unexpected (dynamic) transition in the finite-temperature system, which can be mistaken for a(n onset) glass transition, but is in a class of its own. There is also a tentative connection to random loose packing for frictional systems. An outlook is provided on how this concept may be extended to soft-particle systems and into higher dimensions.

Theory of Activated Dynamics and Glass Transition of Hard Colloids in Two Dimensions

Abstract:The microscopic nonlinear Langevin equation theory is applied to study the localization and activated hopping of two-dimensional hard disks in the deeply supercooled and glass states. Quantitative comparisons of dynamic characteristic length scales, barrier, and their dependence on the reduced packing fraction are presented between hard-disk and hard-sphere suspensions. The dynamic barrier of hard disks emerges at higher absolute and reduced packing fractions and correspondingly, the crossover size of the dynamic cage which correlates to the Lindemann length for melting is smaller. The localization lengths of both hard disks and spheres decrease exponentially with packing fraction. Larger localization length of hard disks than that of hard spheres is found at the same reduced packing fraction. The relaxation time of hard disks rises dramatically above the reduced packing fraction of 0.88, which leads to lower reduced packing fraction at the kinetic glass transition than that of hard spheres. The present work provides a foundation for the subsequent study of the glass transition of binary or polydisperse mixtures of hard disks, normally adopted in experiments and simulations to avoid crystallization, and further, the rheology and mechanical response of the two-dimensional glassy colloidal systems.
Jamming II: Edwards' statistical mechanics of random packings of hard spheres

Abstract:The problem of finding the most efficient way to pack spheres has an illustrious history, dating back to the crystalline arrays conjectured by Kepler and the random geometries explored by Bernal in the 60's. This problem finds applications spanning from the mathematician's pencil, the processing of granular materials, the jamming and glass transitions, all the way to fruit packing in every grocery. There are presently numerous experiments showing that the loosest way to pack spheres gives a density of ~55% (RLP) while filling all the loose voids results in a maximum density of ~63-64% (RCP). While those values seem robustly true, to this date there is no physical explanation or theoretical prediction for them. Here we show that random packings of monodisperse hard spheres in 3d can pack between the densities 4/(4 + 2 \sqrt 3) or 53.6% and 6/(6 + 2 \sqrt 3) or 63.4%, defining RLP and RCP, respectively. The reason for these limits arises from a statistical picture of jammed states in which the RCP can be interpreted as the ground state of the ensemble of jammed matter with zero compactivity, while the RLP arises in the infinite compactivity limit. We combine an extended statistical mechanics approach 'a la Edwards' (where the role traditionally played by the energy and temperature in thermal systems is substituted by the volume and compactivity) with a constraint on mechanical stability imposed by the isostatic condition. Ultimately, our results lead to a phase diagram that provides a unifying view of the disordered hard sphere packing problem.

Transformations of Body-Centered Cubic Crystals Composed of Hard or Soft Spheres to Liquids or Face-Centered Cubic Crystals.

Abstract:The monodispersed hard-sphere system is one of the simplest models for the study of phase transitions. Despite intensive studies of crystallization and melting of hard-sphere face-centered cubic (FCC) crystals, the phase transformations of hard-sphere body-centered cubic (BCC) crystals have not been explored because hard spheres cannot form a stable BCC lattice. In fact, unstable BCC hard-sphere crystals and their related phase transformations can be experimentally achieved. Here, we measured the kinetics of the melting and solid-solid transformations of BCC hard-sphere crystals at various volume fractions via molecular dynamics simulations. When the volume fraction ϕ < 0.494, the system melts catastrophically. At ϕ > 0.545, the BCC crystal transforms to a metastable polycrystal consisting of FCC and hexagonal close-packed (HCP) domains, which is different from those crystallized from supercooled liquids, and then slowly equilibrates toward the FCC crystal. At 0.494 < ϕ < 0.545, the BCC crystal transforms to an intermediate-order metastable state consisting of BCC and non-crystal particles without FCC and HCP symmetries and then equilibrates toward the coexistence of the FCC crystal and liquid. We further studied the melting and BCC-FCC transitions of crystals composed of soft spheres with potential u(r) = ϵ(r/σ)-n . The unstable BCC crystals at n = 12, 9, 8 exhibit similar melting and BCC-FCC transitions as hard-sphere BCC crystals, while the metastable BCC crystals at n = 5, 6, 7 melt quickly at low densities but take very long time for the BCC-FCC transition at high densities. We also estimate the BCC-FCC interfacial energy and critical nucleus size. These results cast light on the melting and solid-solid transformations of atomic BCC crystals, which exist widely in nature.

Abstract:The crystallization of hard spheres at equilibrium is perhaps the most familiar example of an entropically-driven phase transition. In recent years, it has become clear that activity can dramatically alter this order-disorder transition in unexpected ways. The theoretical description of active crystallization has remained elusive as the traditional thermodynamic arguments that shape our understanding of passive freezing are inapplicable to active systems. Here, we develop a statistical mechanical description of the one-body density field and a nonconserved order parameter field that represents local crystalline order. We develop equations of state, guided by computer simulations, describing the crystallinity field which result in shifting the order-disorder transition to higher packing fractions with increasing activity. We then leverage our recent dynamical theory of coexistence to construct the full phase diagram of active Brownian spheres, quantitatively recapitulating both the solid-fluid and liquid-gas coexistence curves and the solid-liquid-gas triple point.
