Abstract:Fan [G. Fan, Distribution of cycle lengths in graphs, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 84 (2002) 187–202] proved that if G is a graph with minimum degree δ(G)≥3k for any positive integer k, then G contains k+1 cycles C0,C1,…,Ck such that k+1<|E(C0)|<|E(C1)|<⋯<|E(Ck)|, |E(Ci)−E(Ci−1)|=2, 1≤i≤k−1, and 1≤|E(Ck)|−|E(Ck−1)|≤2, and furthermore, if δ(G)≥3k+1, then |E(Ck)|−|E(Ck−1)|=2. In this paper, we generalize Fan’s result, and show that if we let G be a graph with minimum degree δ(G)≥3, for any positive integer k (if k≥2, then δ(G)≥4), if dG(u)+dG(v)≥6k−1 for every pair of adjacent vertices u,v∈V(G), then G contains k+1 cycles C0,C1,…,Ck such that k+1<|E(C0)|<|E(C1)|<⋯<|E(Ck)|, |E(Ci)−E(Ci−1)|=2, 1≤i≤k−1, and 1≤|E(Ck)|−|E(Ck−1)|≤2, and furthermore, if dG(u)+dG(v)≥6k+1, then |E(Ck)|−|E(Ck−1)|=2.

Abstract:Boesch’s theorem says that “Suppose that a connected graph G has two non-adjacent 2-degree vertices u1 and u2. Then t(G)≤t(G/{u1,u2}), where t(G) is the number of spanning trees of G.” In this paper, we generalize this theorem as follows: “Suppose that G is a connected graph of order at least 3, and that u1 and u2 are two vertices of degree m and n, respectively, in G. Then t(G)≤mn−m02m+n−2m0t(G/{u1,u2}), where m0(≥0) is the number of multiple edges between u1 and u2.”

Abstract:A graph G is said to be cyclable if for each orientation D of G, there exists a set S(D) ⊆V(G) such that reversing all the arcs with one end in S results in a Hamiltonian digraph. Abstract:For a graph $G$, let $\mu_k(G):=\min~\{\max_{x\in S}d_G(x):~S\in \mathcal{S}_k\}$, where $\mathcal{S}_k$ is the set consisting of all independent sets $\{u_1,\ldots,u_k\}$ of $G$ such that some vertex, say $u_i$ ($1\leq i\leq k$), is at distance two from every other vertex in it. A graph $G$ is $1$-tough if for each cut set $S\subseteq V(G)$, $G-S$ has at most $|S|$ components. Recently, Shi and Shan \cite{Shi} conjectured that for each integer $k\geq 4$, being $2k$-connected is sufficient for $1$-tough $(P_2\cup kP_1)$-free graphs to be hamiltonian, which was confirmed by Xu et al. \cite{Xu} and Ota and Sanka \cite{Ota2}, respectively. In this article, we generalize the above results through the following Fan-type theorem: Let $k$ be an integer with $k\geq 2$ and let $G$ be a $1$-tough and $k$-connected $(P_2\cup kP_1)$-free graph with $\mu_{k+1}(G)\geq\frac{7k-6}{5}$, then $G$ is hamiltonian or the Petersen graph.

Abstract:For a vertex subset $X$ of a graph $G$, let $\Delta_{t}(X)$ be the maximum value of the degree sums of the subsets of $X$ of size $t$. In this paper, we prove the following result: Let $k$ be a positive integer, and let $G$ be an $m$-connected graph of order $n \ge 5k - 2$. If $\Delta_{2}(X) \ge n$ for every independent set $X$ of size $\lceil m/k \rceil+1$ in $G$, then $G$ has a 2-factor with exactly $k$ cycles. This is a common generalization of the results obtained by Brandt et al. [Degree conditions for 2-factors, J. Graph Theory 24 (1997) 165-173] and Yamashita [On degree sum conditions for long cycles and cycles through specified vertices, Discrete Math. 308 (2008) 6584-6587], respectively.

Spectral extremal graphs for fan graphs

Abstract:A well-known result of Nosal states that a graph $G$ with $m$ edges and $\lambda(G) > \sqrt{m}$ contains a triangle. Nikiforov [Combin. Probab. Comput. 11 (2002)] extended this result to cliques by showing that if $\lambda (G) > \sqrt{2m(1-1/r)}$, then $G$ contains a copy of $K_{r+1}$. Let $C_k^+$ be the graph obtained from a cycle $C_k$ by adding an edge to two vertices with distance two, and let $F_k$ be the friendship graph consisting of $k$ triangles that share a common vertex. Recently, Zhai, Lin and Shu [European J. Combin. 95 (2021)], Sun, Li and Wei [Discrete Math. 346 (2023)], and Li, Lu and Peng [Discrete Math. 346 (2023)] proved that if $ m\ge 8$ and $\lambda (G) \ge \frac{1}{2} (1+\sqrt{4m-3})$, then $G$ contains a copy of $C_5,C_5^+$ and $F_2$, respectively, unless $G=K_2\vee \frac{m-1}{2}K_1$. In this paper, we give a unified extension by showing that such a graph contains a copy of $V_5$, where $V_5=K_1\vee P_4$ is the join of a vertex and a path on four vertices. Our result extends the aforementioned results since $C_5,C_5^+$ and $F_2$ are proper subgraphs of $V_5$. In addition, we prove that if $m\ge 33$ and $\lambda (G) \ge 1+ \sqrt{m-2}$, then $G$ contains a copy of $F_3$, unless $G=K_3\vee \frac{m-3}{3}K_1$. This confirms a conjecture on the friendship graph $F_k$ in the case $k=3$. Finally, we conclude some spectral extremal graph problems concerning the large fan graphs and wheel graphs.

Abstract:Let a1,a2,…,an and b1,b2,…,bn be integers with 0⩽ai⩽bi for i=1,2,…,n. The purpose of this note is to give a good characterization for the existence of a simple graph G with vertices v1,v2,…,vn such that ai⩽dG(vi)⩽bi for i=1,2,…,n. This solves a research problem posed by Niessen and generalizes an Erdős–Gallai theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the relationship between spectral radius and maximum average degree of graphs. By using this relationship and the previous technique of Li and Ning in (J Graph Theory 103:486–492, 2023), we prove that, for any given positive number , if n is a sufficiently large integer, then any graph G of order n with contains a cycle of length t for all integers , where is the spectral radius of G . This improves the result of Li and Ning (2023).

Abstract:Liu and Ma [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2018] conjectured that every $2$-connected non-bipartite graph with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains $\lceil k/2\rceil $ cycles with consecutive odd lengths. In particular, they showed that this conjecture holds when $k$ is even. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture for any $k\in \mathbb N$. Moreover, we also improve some previous results about cycles of consecutive lengths.

Abstract:Let G be a simple graph and c(G)(e) denote the length of the longest cycle containing an edge e if there exists a cycle containing e, and 2 otherwise. We prove that the summation of 2 divided by c(G)(e) over all edges in an n-vertex graph G is at most n-1, and characterize all n-vertex extremal graphs that achieve the bound, thereby extending the classic Erdos-Gallai theorem on cycles.

Abstract:The homogeneity degree of a topological space $X$ is the number of orbits of the action of the homeomorphism group of $X$ on $X$. We initiate a study of dendroids of small homogeneity degree, beginning with fans. We classify all smooth fans of homogeneity degree $3$, and discuss non-smooth fans and prove some results on degree $4$.

Abstract:Let $H$, $T$ and $C_n$ be a graph, a tree and a cycle of order $n$, respectively. Let $H^{(i)}$ be the complete join of $H$ and an empty graph on $i$ vertices. Then the Cartesian product $H\Box T$ of $H$ and $T$ can be obtained by applying zip product on $H^{(i)}$ and the graph produced by zip product repeatedly. Let $\textrm{cr}_{\Sigma}(H)$ denote the crossing number of $H$ in an arbitrary surface $\Sigma$. If $H$ satisfies certain connectivity condition, then $\textrm{cr}_{\Sigma}(H\Box T)$ is not less than the sum of the crossing numbers of its ``subgraphs". In this paper, we introduced a new concept of generalized periodic graphs, which contains $H\Box C_n$. For a generalized periodic graph $G$ and a function $f(t)$, where $t$ is the number of subgraphs in a decomposition of $G$, we gave a necessary and sufficient condition for $\textrm{cr}_{\Sigma}(G)\geq f(t)$. As an application, we confirmed a conjecture of Lin et al. on the crossing number of the generalized Petersen graph $P(4h+2,2h)$ in the plane. Based on the condition, algorithms are constructed to compute lower bounds on the crossing number of generalized periodic graphs in $\Sigma$. In special cases, it is possible to determine lower bounds on an infinite family of generalized periodic graphs, by determining a lower bound on the crossing number of a finite generalized periodic graph.

Abstract:Gao, Huo, Liu and Ma (2019) proved a result on the existence of paths connecting specified two vertices whose lengths differ by one or two. By using this result, they settled two famous conjectures due to Thomassen (1983). In this paper, we improve their result, and obtain a generalization of a result of Bondy and Vince (1998).

Abstract:The well-known Hamiltonian sufficient conditions, proposed by Dirac, Faudree et al., Pósa, Bondy, Chvátal are based on pure degree manipulations without any additional conditions. In this paper, we present two new types of pure degree manipulations that produce relatively simpler (in view of verification) results. The reverse versions (long-cycle versions) of the obtained results are presented as well. The importance of pure degree manipulations is motivated by their amenability (as starting points) to generalizations and new ideas in a great variety of ways.

Abstract:The Faber–Krahn inequality is related to the smallest nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplacian operator with Dirichlet boundary condition on a bounded domain in ℝ n . In this article, we investigate some properties of the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of unicyclic graphs. These results are used to show that the Faber–Krahn type inequality also holds for unicyclic graphs with a given graphic unicyclic degree sequence with minor conditions.
