Abstract:A cycle is a graph is dominating if every edge of the graph is incident with a vertex of the cycle. In this paper, we investigate the characterization of the class of the forbidden pairs guaranteeing the existence of a dominating cycle and show the following two results: (i) Every $2$-connected $\{P_{5}, K_{4}^{-}\}$-free graph contains a longest cycle which is a dominating cycle. (ii) Every $2$-connected $\{P_{5}, W^{*}\}$-free graph contains a longest cycle which is a dominating cycle. Here $P_{5}$ is the path of order $5$, $K_{4}^{-}$ is the graph obtained from the complete graph of order $4$ by removing one edge, and $W^{*}$ is a graph obtained from two triangles and an edge by identifying one vertex in each.

Abstract:A vertex subset S of a graph G is said to 2-dominate the graph if each vertex not in S has at least two neighbors in it. As usual, the associated parameter is the minimum cardinal of a 2-dominating set, which is called the 2-domination number of the graph G. We present both lower and upper bounds of the 2-domination number of cylinders, which are the Cartesian products of a path and a cycle. These bounds allow us to compute the exact value of the 2-domination number of cylinders where the path is arbitrary, and the order of the cycle is n $\equiv$ 0(mod 3) and as large as desired. In the case of the lower bound, we adapt the technique of the wasted domination to this parameter and we use the so-called tropical matrix product to obtain the desired bound. Moreover, we provide a regular patterned construction of a minimum 2-dominating set in the cylinders having the mentioned cycle order.

Abstract:A dominating set in a graph is a set of vertices with the property that every vertex in the graph is either in the set or adjacent to something in the set. The domination sequence of the graph is the sequence whose $k$th term is the number of dominating sets of size $k$. Alikhani and Peng have conjectured that the domination sequence of every graph is unimodal. Beaton and Brown verified this conjecture for paths and cycles. Here we extend this to arbitrary powers of paths and cycles.

Abstract:A subset S of the vertex set of a graph G is called acyclic if the subgraph it induces in G contains no cycles. We call S an acyclic dominating set if it is both acyclic and dominating. The minimum cardinality of an acyclic dominating set, denoted by gamma a(G), is called the acyclic domination number of G. A graph G is 2-diameter-critical if it has diameter 2 and the deletion of any edge increases its diameter. In this paper, we show that for any positive integers k and d >= 3, there is a 2-diameter-critical graph G such that delta(G) = d and gamma a(G) - gamma(G) >= k, and our result answers a question posed by Cheng et al. in negative.

Abstract:A subset S of the vertex set of a graph G is called acyclic if the subgraph it induces in G contains no cycles. S is called an acyclic dominating set of G if it is both acyclic and dominating. The minimum cardinality of an acyclic dominating set, denoted by gamma(a)(G), is called the acyclic domination number of G. Hedetniemi et al. [Acyclic domination, Discrete Math. 222 (2000) 151-165] introduced the concept of acyclic domination and posed the following open problem: if delta(G) is the minimum degree of G, is gamma(a) (G) <= delta(G) for any graph whose diameter is two? In this paper, we provide a negative answer to this question by showing that for any positive k, there is a graph G with diameter two such that gamma(a) (G) - delta(G) >= k. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Nine variations of the concept of domination in a simple graph are identified as fundamental domination concepts, and a unified approach is introduced for studying them. For each variation, the minimum cardinality of a subset of dominating elements is the corresponding fundamental domination number. It is observed that, for each nontrivial connected graph, at most five of these nine numbers can be different, and inequalities between these five numbers are given. Finally, these fundamental dominations are interpreted in terms of the total graph of the given graph, a concept introduced by the second author in 1965. It is argued that the very first domination concept, defined by O. Ore in 1962 and under a different name by C. Berge in 1958, deserves to be called the most fundamental of graph dominations.

Abstract:A total dominating set in a graph G is a set S of vertices of G such that every vertex in G is adjacent to a vertex in S . Recently, the following question was proposed: "Is it true that every connected cubic graph containing a 3-cycle has two vertex disjoint total dominating sets?" In this paper, we give a negative answer to this question. Moreover, we prove that if we replace 3-cycle with 4-cycle the answer is affirmative. This implies every connected cubic graph containing a diamond (the complete graph of order 4 minus one edge) as a subgraph can be partitioned into two total dominating sets, a result that was proved in 2017.

Abstract:A set D⊆V(G) of a graph G is a dominating set if every vertex v∈V(G) is either in D or adjacent to a vertex in D. The domination number γ(G) of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set of G. Campos and Wakabayashi (2013) and Tokunaga (2013) proved independently that if G is an n-vertex maximal outerplanar graph having t vertices of degree 2, then γ(G)≤n+t4. We improve their upper bound by showing γ(G)≤n+k4, where k is the number of pairs of consecutive 2-degree vertices with distance at least 3 on the outer cycle. Moreover, we prove that γ(G)≤5n16 for a Hamiltonian maximal planar graph G with n≥7 vertices.

Abstract:Abstract In graph G G , a vertex dominates itself and its neighbors. A subset S ⊆ V ( G ) S\subseteq V\left(G) is said to be a double-dominating set of G G if S S dominates every vertex of G G at least twice. The double domination number γ × 2 ( G ) {\gamma }_{\times 2}\left(G) is the minimum cardinality of a double dominating set of G G . We show that if G G is a maximal outerplanar graph on n ≥ 3 n\ge 3 vertices, then γ × 2 ( G ) ≤ 2 n 3 {\gamma }_{\times 2}\left(G)\le ⌊\frac{2n}{3}⌋ . Further, if n ≥ 4 n\ge 4 , then γ × 2 ( G ) ≤ min n + t 2 , n − t {\gamma }_{\times 2}\left(G)\le \min \left\{⌊\frac{n+t}{2}⌋,n-t\right\} , where t t is the number of vertices of degree 2 in G G . These bounds are shown to be tight. In addition, we also study the case that G G is a striped maximal outerplanar graph.

Abstract:For a graph $G=(V, E)$, a weak $\{2\}$-dominating function $f:V\rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ has the property that $\sum _{u\in N(v)}f(u)\ge 2$ for every vertex $v\in V$ with $f(v)= 0$, where N(v) is the set of neighbors of v in G. The weight of a weak $\{2\}$-dominating function f is the sum $\sum _{v\in V}f(v)$ and the minimum weight of a weak $\{2\}$-dominating function is the weak $\{2\}$-domination number. In this paper, we introduce a discharging approach and provide a short proof for the lower bound of the weak $\{2\}$-domination number of $C_n \Box C_5$, which was obtained by Stȩpień, et al. (Discrete Appl Math 170:113–116, 2014). Moreover, we obtain the weak $\{2\}$-domination numbers of $C_n \Box C_3$ and $C_n \Box C_4$.

Abstract:We say that a graph $H$ dominates another graph $H'$ if the number of homomorphisms from $H'$ to any graph $G$ is dominated, in an appropriate sense, by the number of homomorphisms from $H$ to $G$. We study the family of dominating graphs, those graphs with the property that they dominate all of their subgraphs. It has long been known that even-length paths are dominating in this sense and a result of Hatami implies that all weakly norming graphs are dominating. In a previous paper, we showed that every finite reflection group gives rise to a family of weakly norming, and hence dominating, graphs. Here we revisit this connection to show that there is a much broader class of dominating graphs.

Longest cycles in vertex-transitive and highly connected graphs

Abstract:We present progress on two old conjectures about longest cycles in graphs. The first conjecture, due to Thomassen from 1978, states that apart from a finite number of exceptions, all connected vertex-transitive graphs contain a Hamiltonian cycle. The second conjecture, due to Smith from 1984, states that for $r\ge 2$ in every $r$-connected graph any two longest cycles intersect in at least $r$ vertices. In this paper, we prove a new lemma about the intersection of longest cycles in a graph which can be used to improve the best known bounds towards both of the aforementioned conjectures: First, we show that every connected vertex-transitive graph on $n\geq 3$ vertices contains a cycle of length at least $\Omega(n^{13/21})$, improving on $\Omega(n^{3/5})$ from [De Vos, arXiv:2302:04255, 2023]. Second, we show that in every $r$-connected graph with $r\geq 2$, any two longest cycles meet in at least $\Omega(r^{5/8})$ vertices, improving on $\Omega(r^{3/5})$ from [Chen, Faudree and Gould, J. Combin. Theory, Ser.~ B, 1998]. Our proof combines combinatorial arguments, computer-search and linear programming.

On Tutte cycles containing three prescribed edges

Abstract:A cycle $C$ in a graph $G$ is called a Tutte cycle if, after deleting $C$ from $G$, each component has at most three neighbors on $C$. Tutte cycles play an important role in the study of Hamiltonicity of planar graphs. Thomas and Yu and independently Sanders proved the existence of Tutte cycles containining three specified edges of a facial cycle in a 2-connected plane graph. We prove a quantitative version of this result, bounding the number of components of the graph obtained by deleting a Tutte cycle. As a corollary, we can find long cycles in essentially 4-connected plane graphs that also contain three prescribed edges of a facial cycle.

Abstract:The dominating graph of a graph G is a graph whose vertices correspond to the dominating sets of G and two vertices are adjacent whenever their corresponding dominating sets differ in exactly one vertex. Studying properties of dominating graph has become an increasingly interesting subject in domination theory. On the other hand, median graphs and partial cubes are two fundamental graph classes in graph theory. In this paper, we make some new connections between domination theory and the theory of median graphs and partial cubes. As the main result, we show that the following conditions are equivalent for every graph with no isolated vertex, and in particular, that the simple third condition completely characterizes first two ones in which three concepts of dominating graphs, median graphs and complement of minimal dominating sets get related:

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Saito that if a graph G with delta greater than or equal to 3 has no cycle of length 1 (mod 3), then G has an induced subgraph which is isomorphic to the Petersen graph.
