Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the first Aeppli-Chern class for complex manifolds and show that the ( 1 , 1 ) (1,1) -component of the curvature 2 2 -form of the Levi-Civita connection on the anti-canonical line bundle represents this class. We systematically investigate the relationship between a variety of Ricci curvatures on Hermitian manifolds and the background Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, we study non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds by using the first Aeppli-Chern class and the Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics. In particular, we construct explicit Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics on Hopf manifolds S 2 n − 1 × S 1 \mathbb {S}^{2n-1}\times \mathbb {S}^1 . We also construct a smooth family of Gauduchon metrics on a compact Hermitian manifold such that the metrics are in the same first Aeppli-Chern class, and their first Chern-Ricci curvatures are the same and non-negative, but their Riemannian scalar curvatures are constant and vary smoothly between negative infinity and a positive number. In particular, it shows that Hermitian manifolds with non-negative first Chern class can admit Hermitian metrics with strictly negative Riemannian scalar curvature.

Abstract:On Hermitian manifolds, the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. By refining the Bochner formulas for any Hermitian complex vector bundle (and Riemannian real vector bundle) with an arbitrary metric connection over a compact Hermitian manifold, we can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and complex vector bundles by the second Ricci curvature tensors. We will also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:We examine questions of geometric realizability for algebraic structures which arise naturally in affine and Riemannian geometry. Suppose given an algebraic curvature operator R at a point P of a manifold M and suppose given a real analytic (resp. C-k for finite k at least 2) pseudo-Riemannian metric on M defined near P. We construct a torsion free real analytic (resp. C-k) connection D which is defined near P on the tangent bundle of M whose curvature operator is the given operator R at P and so that D has constant scalar curvature. We show that if R is Ricci symmetric, then D can be chosen to be Ricci symmetric; if R has trace free Ricci tensor, then D can be chosen to have trace free Ricci tensor; if R is Ricci alternating, then D can be chosen to be Ricci alternating.

Abstract:Conformally quasi-recurrent (CQR)_n pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are investigated, and several new results are obtained. It is shown that the Ricci tensor and the gradient of the fundamental vector are Weyl compatible tensors (the notion was introduced recently by the authors and applies to significative space-times), (CQR)_n manifolds with concircular fundamental vector are quasi-Einstein. For 4-dimensional (CQR)$_4$ Lorentzian manifolds the fundamental vector is null and unique up to a scaling, it is an eigenvector of the Ricci tensor, and its integral curves are geodesics. Such space-times are Petrov type-N with respect to the fundamental null vector.

Abstract:We determine pseudosymmetry type curvature conditions of some 2-quasi-Einstein manifolds (M,g), dim M > 3, with the Riemann-Christoffel curvature tensor R expresed by a linear combination of Kulkarni-Nomizu products formed by the metric tensor g, the Ricci tensor S and its square S^2. Certain warped product manifolds, with 2-dimensional base, and in particular some spacetimes, are such 2-quasi Einstein manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a complete n-dim Riemannian manifold with positive Ricci curvature, quadratically nonnegatively curved infinity and infinite topological type. This gives a negative answer to a conjecture by Jiping Sha and Zhongmin Shen in the case of n greater than or equal to 6.

Abstract:Algebraic properties are explored for the curvature tensors of Riemannian manifolds, using the irreducible decomposition of curvature tensors. Our method provides a powerful tool to analyze the irreducible basis as well as an algorithm to determine the linear dependence of arbitrary Riemann polynomials. We completely specify 13 independent basis elements for the quartic scalars and explicitly find 13 linear relations among 26 scalar invariants. Our method provides several completely new results, including some clues to identify 23 independent basis elements from 90 quintic scalars, that are difficult to find otherwise.

Three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds associated with locally conformal Riemannian product manifolds

Abstract:A 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold equipped with a tensor structure of type $(1,1)$, whose fourth power is the identity, is considered. This structure acts as an isometry with respect to the metric. A Riemannian almost product manifold associated with such a manifold is also studied. It turns out, that the almost product manifold belongs to the class of locally conformal Riemannian product manifolds of the Naveira classification. Conditions for the additional structures of the manifolds to be parallel with respect to the Levi-Civita connection of the metric were found. Classes of almost Einstein manifolds and Einstein manifolds are determined and some of their curvature properties are obtained. As examples of these manifolds, a hypersurface is considered.

Abstract:We study several classes of Riemannian manifolds which are defined by imposing a certain condition on the Ricci tensor. We consider the following cases: Ricci recurrent, Cotton, quasi Einstein and pseudo Ricci symmetric condition. Such conditions can be interpreted as overdetermined PDE systems whose unknowns are the components of the Riemannian metric, and perhaps in addition some auxiliary functions. Hence even if the dimension of the manifold is small it is not easy to compute interesting examples by hand, and indeed very few examples appear in the literature. We will present large families of nontrivial examples of such manifolds. The relevant PDE systems are first transformed to an involutive form. After that in many cases one can actually solve the resulting system explicitly. However, the involutive form itself already gives a lot of information about the possible solutions to the given problem. We will also discuss some relationships between the relevant classes.

On differential geometry of non-degenerate CR manifolds

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a non-degenerate CR manifold (M,H(M),J) with a given pseudo-Hermitian 1-form {\theta}, and endow the CR distribution H(M) with any Hermitian metric h instead of the Levi form L_{\theta}. This induces a natural Riemannian metric g_{h,{\theta}} on M compatible with the structure. The synthetic object (M,{\theta},J,h) will be called a pseudo-Hermitian manifold, which generalizes the usual notion of pseudo-Hermitian manifold (M,{\theta},J,L_{\theta}) in the literature. Our purpose is to investigate the differential-geometric aspect of pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. By imitating Hermitian geometry, we find a canonical connection on (M,{\theta},J,h), which generalizes the Tanaka-Webster connection on (M,{\theta},J,L_{\theta}). We define the pseudo-Kähler 2-form by g_{h,{\theta}} and J; and introduce the notion of a pseudo-Kähler manifold, which is an analogue of a Kähler manifold. It turns out that (M,{\theta},J,L_{\theta}) is pseudo-Kählerian. Using the structure equations of the canonical connection, we derive some curvature and torsion properties of a pseudo-Hermitian manifold, in particular of a pseudo-Kähler manifold. Then some known results in Riemannian geometry are generalized to the pseudo-Hermitian case. These results include some Cartan type results. As an application, we give a new proof for the classification of Sasakian space forms.

Almost Paracomplex Structures on 4-Manifolds

Abstract:Reflection in a line in Euclidean 3-space defines an almost paracomplex structure on the space of all oriented lines, isometric with respect to the canonical neutral Kaehler metric. Beyond Euclidean 3-space, the space of oriented geodesics of any real 3-dimensional space form admits both isometric and anti-isometric paracomplex structures. This paper considers the existence or otherwise of isometric and anti-isometric almost paracomplex structures $j$ on a pseudo-Riemannian 4-manifold $(M,g)$, such that $j$ is parallel with respect to the Levi-Civita connection of $g$. It is shown that if an isometric or anti-isometric almost paracomplex structure on a conformally flat manifold is parallel, then the scalar curvature of the metric must be zero. In addition, it is found that $j$ is parallel iff the eigenplanes are tangent to a pair of mutually orthogonal foliations by totally geodesic surfaces. The composition of a Riemannian metric with an isometric almost paracomplex structure $j$ yields a neutral metric $g'$. It is proven that if $j$ is parallel, then $g$ is Einstein iff $g'$ is conformally flat and scalar flat. The vanishing of the Hirzebruch signature is found to be a necessary topological condition for a closed 4-manifold to admit an Einstein metric with a parallel isometric paracomplex structure. Thus, while the K3 manifold admits an Einstein metric with an isometric paracomplex structure, it cannot be parallel. The same holds true for certain connected sums of complex projective 2-space and its conjugate.

On pseudo-Riemannian Ricci-parallel Lie groups which are not Einstein

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly study left invariant pseudo-Riemannian Ricci-parallel metrics on connected Lie groups which are not Einstein. Following a result of Boubel and Bérard Bergery, there are two typical types of such metrics, which are characterized by the minimal polynomial of the Ricci operator. Namely, its form is either $(X-\alpha)(X-\bar{\alpha})$ (type I), where $\alpha\in \mathbb{C}\setminus \mathbb{R}$, or $X^{2}$ (type II). Firstly, we obtain a complete description of Ricci-parallel metrics of type I. In particular, such a Ricci-parallel metric is uniquely determined by an Einstein metric and an invariant symmetric parallel complex structure up to isometry and scaling. Then we study Ricci-parallel metric Lie algebras of type II by using double extension process. Surprisingly, we find that every double extension of a metric Abelian Lie algebra is Ricci-parallel and the converse holds for Lorentz Ricci-parallel metric nilpotent Lie algebras of type II. Moreover, we construct infinitely many new explicit examples of Ricci-parallel metric Lie algebras which are not Einstein.

Abstract:A Riemannian manifold is called almost positively curved if the set of points for which all 2-planes have positive sectional curvature is open and dense. We find three new examples of almost positively curved manifolds: $Sp(3)/Sp(1)^2$, and two circle quotients of $Sp(3)/Sp(1)^2$. We also show the quasi-positively curved metric of Tapp (J Differ Geom 65:273–287, 2003) on $Sp(n+1)/Sp(n-1) Sp(1)$ is not almost positively curved if $n\ge 3$.

Einstein manifolds with optical geometries of Kerr type

Abstract:We classify the Ricci flat Lorentzian $n$-manifolds satisfying three particular conditions, encoding and combining some crucial features of the Kerr metrics and the Robinson-Trautman optical structures. We prove that: (a) If $n>4$, there is no Lorentzian manifold satisfying the considered Kerr type conditions, in unexpected contrast with what occurs for the metrics satisfying (very similar) Taub-NUT type conditions; (b) If $n=4$ there are two large classes of such Kerr type manifolds. Each class consists of manifolds fibering over open Riemann surfaces, equipped with a metric of constant Gaussian curvature $\kappa = 1$ or $\kappa = -1$. The first class includes a three parameter family of metrics admitting real analytic extensions to $(\mathbb R^3 \setminus\{0\}) \times \mathbb R = (S^2 \times \mathbb R_+) \times \mathbb R$ and a large class of other metrics not admitting this kind of extensions. The metrics of this first class admitting such extensions are all isometric to the well known Kerr metrics, with the three parameters corresponding to the three space-like components of the angular momentum of the gravitational field. The second class contains a subclass of metrics defined on $\big(\mathbb D\times \mathbb R_+\big)\times \mathbb R$, where $\mathbb D$ is the Lobachevsky Poincaré disc. This subclass is in bijection with the holomorphic functions on $\mathbb D$ satisfying an appropriate open condition. These and other results are consequences of a very simple way to construct totally explicit examples of Ricci flat Lorentzian manifolds.

Some characterizations of Riemannian manifolds endowed with a conformal vector fields

Abstract:The aim of this article is to investigate the presence of a conformal vector $\xi$ with conformal factor $\rho$ on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with or without boundary $\partial M$. We firstly prove that a compact Riemannian manifold $(M^n, g)\,,n \geq 3,$ with constant scalar curvature, with boundary $\partial M$ totally geodesic, in such way that the traceless Ricci curvature is zero in the direction of $\nabla \rho,$ is isometric to a standard hemisphere. In the $4$-dimensional case, under the condition $\displaystyle\int_M|\mathring{Ric}|^2\langle \xi,\nabla \rho\rangle \,dM\leq0$, we show that, either $M$ is isometric to a standard sphere, or $M$ is isometric to a standard hemisphere. Finally, we give a partial answer for the cosmic no-hair conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss when a quasi-conformally flat weakly Ricci symmetric manifold (of dimension greater than 3) becomes a manifold of hyper quasi-constant curvature, a quasi-Einstein manifold and a manifold of quasi-constant curvature. Also we discuss when a pseudo projectively flat weakly Ricci symmetric manifold (of dimension greater than 3) becomes pseudo-quasi constant curvature and a quasi-Einstein manifold, and when a W2-flat weakly Ricci symmetric manifold (of dimension greater than 3) becomes a quasi-Einstein manifold.

Abstract:Generalized tensor analysis in the sense of Colombeau's construction is employed to introduce a nonlinear distributional pseudo-Riemannian geometry. In particular, after deriving several characterizations of invertibility in the algebra of generalized functions we define the notions of generalized pseudo-Riemannian metric, generalized connection and generalized curvature tensor. We prove a ``Fundamental Lemma of (pseudo-)Riemannian geometry'' in this setting and define the notion of geodesics of a generalized metric. Finally, we present applications of the resulting theory to general relativity.

Abstract:We construct Einstein metrics of non-positive scalar curvature on certain solid torus bundles over a Fano Kahler-Einstein manifold. We show, among other things, that the negative Einstein metrics are conformally compact, and the Ricci-flat metrics have slower-than-Euclidean volume growth and quadratic curvature decay. Also we construct positive Einstein metrics on certain 3-sphere bundles over a Fano Kahler-Einstein manifold. We classify the homeomorphism and diffeomorphism types of the total spaces when the base is the complex projective plane.
