Abstract:In the face of accelerating urbanization, urban ecology is an important multidisciplinary science for developing future cities, with roots in many fields of research. In light of the continuing challenges of urban growth, it is promising to illuminate research strands in urban ecology to identify topics that have facilitated our understanding of urban systems and supported solutions for sustainable cities. This review traces the development of the Berlin School of Urban Ecology over the past 50 years, synthesizes its major approaches and outcomes, shows how they have supported the planning of Berlin as a green, biodiverse city and places their contributions to urban ecology within an international perspective. The key contributions of the Berlin School have been (i) a spatially differentiated, unbiased view of the city as a complex of ecosystems or biotope types resulting from human-nature interactions and harboring a surprisingly high biological richness, including unprecedented combinations of native and non-native species; (ii) a novel human-centered approach to reconcile urban land use and biodiversity conservation for the benefit of urban residents, covering natural remnants, designed green spaces and novel urban ecosystems; and (iii) interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to support the implementation of concepts and projects, including the integration of wastelands in urban green infrastructure. Over the past 50 years, the work of the Berlin School has been a harbinger of many later developments elsewhere, ultimately supporting what the historian Jens Lachmund described as "greening Berlin: the co-production of science, politics, and urban nature."

Abstract:Urban wildlife ecology and conservation is a discipline worldwide in scope. Although some attention was given the subject in the early to mid-1900s, most activity in the field is of more recent origin. Many European countries have active programs and activities, including the United Kingdom-Man and the Biosphere (UK-MAB) Urban Forum and The Wildlife Trusts of England, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization's MAB Program, and urban ecology research in Germany and Poland. The Netherlands' concept of “ecological landscapes” introduced a new approach to design of urban open space. Durban, South Africa followed with “D'MOSS,” a metropolitan open space system founded on the principles of island biogeography theory. The park connector network of Singapore combines principles of conservation biology and landscape planning. Urban wildlife programs and activities exist in the United States at the federal, state, and local levels as well as in private conservation organizations. The Wildlife Society established an Urban Affairs and Regional Planning Committee in the mid-1970s that later became the Urban Wildlife Committee and then evolved into the Urban Wildlife Working Group. Urban wildlife research is providing knowledge of wildlife and plant populations and communities in urban areas that hopefully will lead to better understanding and greater sustainability of urban ecosystems.

Abstract:The term 'urban forest' is an oxymoron and continues to provoke a staggering set of questions. The default practice of transplanting cloned saplings from nurseries into the city holds little promise of adding up to more than the sum of its destressed trees. In contrast, there is growing recognition of the unsanctioned emergent forest vegetation of urban fallows. While the fields of cultural geography and urban ecology recognize such unintentional urban forests for their layered sociocultural, ecological and health benefits, city administrators, the general public and even landscape architects have been slower to embrace them. However, consequences of global warming and the subsequent rise of urban ecology mandates an update regarding current challenges and potentials in managing urban forests. Park projects can expand the normative canon by embracing recent urban ecology concepts concerning spontaneous vegetation on fallow urban land, such as 'ruderal' and 'fourth nature'. This paper critically reviews traditional notions of urban forestry and refutes the single tree planting approach. It questions standardized connotations and nativist biases towards invasive species and argues that spontaneous vegetation is well equipped to provide and expand critical networks to more resilient and enduring urban forest patches. It explores cases in Germany, in general, and Berlin, in particular, to ground the relevance for emergent vegetation. It considers the acknowledgment and utilization of recent developments in forestry science regarding microbial ecology, including the mycorrhizal and symbiotic macro/micro networks, important for landscape architecture and necessary to propose more resilient and healthy forested urban environments.
Commerce and Erudition: Civic Self-Representation Through Botany and Horticulture in Germany, Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries

Abstract:Through several case studies, this paper examines the important role gardens played in civic self-representation and the creation of a civic “corporate identity” in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Several German cities—and not residential cities—were crosspoints in the history of botany and horticulture. The progress of scientific botany depended on international networking, commercial and business contacts and communication among scholars. Autopsy, observation and description as basic scientific techniques for approaching nature and its phenomena were familiar to the physicians and apothecaries, as well as to the naturalists and botanists. The exchange of letters, drawings and written observations, about seeds and plants, were important steps in the development of botany as a science. The first garden books in the German language were written not by court gardeners, but by learned citizens: physicians, apothecaries, and Protestant pastors.Horticulture as practised in the Free Cities of the Holy Roman Empire in Southern Germany was important for the introduction of rare plants into Central Europe. In many cities, in the seventeenth to eighteenth centuries, the urban elite had a particular interest in horticulture. Though private, the gardens are considered and shown as a part of the public urban space.
Artificial terrariums as urban habitats innovative solutions for environmental, economic, and social development

Abstract:This article examines the potential of repurposing abandoned indoor retail spaces into artificial landscapes as terrariums. By transforming these neglected areas, which would otherwise contribute to the proliferation of brownfields, into large virtual terrariums, a novel and unexplored utilization of extinct vegetation is made possible. This article investigates the educational and experiential benefits of such artificial landscapes, highlighting their role in enhancing understanding of regional impacts of change in the Anthropocene. Additionally, it explores the potential for environmental optimization and interaction within these terrariums, considering temperature calibration, climate conditioning, and the integration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The GIS dimension is particularly emphasized, as it enables spatial analysis and landscape preservation, regional decision support systems, and further contributes to exploring this concept. This study further aims to provide insights into the impact and reception of artificial terrariums while considering their potential for future expansion and innovation. By delving into the intersection of indoor exploration, education, and environmental optimization, the contribution explores the broader understanding of the possibilities presented by artificial landscapes as terrariums in times of profound regional change.

Abstract:Abstract Understanding the environmental consequences of urbanization is a pressing objective, and more experimental ecology in urban areas would be useful in meeting this goal. Here we introduce the concept of Transitional Ecology, which involves incorporating ecological field research into temporary public art on vacant urban land. Ecological experiments can yield useful results about urban systems over short time periods. Incorporating such experiments into temporary public art allows the space to provide diverse community benefits. Although this fusion introduces challenges for both ecologists and artists, it can also create formal and informal science training activities while raising public awareness of environmental science. We illustrate these challenges and opportunities with the Urban Flower Field, a phytoremediation project in a temporary urban park.

Abstract:For almost two centuries, green spaces in European cities have been rethought and built based on the shifting ideas and practices about the role of nature in cities. Although there is a great diversity in the quantity and quality of green spaces in European cities today, the ideas and practices behind their creation and destruction are quite common across the continent. Starting in the mid-nineteenth century, European city leaders started bringing nature back into the city to counter the negative effects of industrialization. Later, modernist architects and planners began using scientific methods and populist ideas of nature in an attempt to create accessible healthy quality living for a rapidly expanding urban industrial workforce. Most recently, European cities are embracing sustainability, a sometimes contradictory effort to balance neoliberal commodification of nature with its scientifically legitimated quality of life benefits.

Abstract:Urban greenspace has gained considerable attention during the last decades because of its relevance to wildlife conservation, human welfare, and climate change adaptation. Biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation worldwide require the formation of new concepts of ecological restoration and rehabilitation aimed at improving ecosystem functions, services, and biodiversity conservation in cities. Although relict sites of natural and semi-natural ecosystems can be found in urban areas, environmental conditions and species composition of most urban ecosystems are highly modified, inducing the development of novel and hybrid ecosystems. A consequence of this ecological novelty is the lack of (semi-) natural reference systems available for defining restoration targets and assessing restoration success in urban areas. This hampers the implementation of ecological restoration in cities. In consideration of these challenges, we present a new conceptual framework that provides guidance and support for urban ecological restoration and rehabilitation by formulating restoration targets for different levels of ecological novelty (i.e., historic, hybrid, and novel ecosystems). To facilitate the restoration and rehabilitation of novel urban ecosystems, we recommend using established species-rich and well-functioning urban ecosystems as reference. Such urban reference systems are likely to be present in many cities. Highlighting their value in comparison to degraded ecosystems can stimulate and guide restoration initiatives. As urban restoration approaches must consider local history and site conditions, as well as citizens' needs, it may also be advisable to focus the restoration of strongly altered urban ecosystems on select ecosystem functions, services and/or biodiversity values. Ecosystem restoration and rehabilitation in cities can be either relatively inexpensive or costly, but even expensive measures can pay off when they effectively improve ecosystem services such as climate change mitigation or recreation. Successful re‐shaping and re-thinking of urban greenspace by involving citizens and other stakeholders will help to make our cities more sustainable in the future.

Abstract:Real-world laboratories (RwLs) provide research settings to develop and test sustainability solution options and have gained considerable attention in the field of sustainability research since the early 2010s. RwLs, especially those in which urban municipalities are involved as partners, have been linked to promises for fostering sustainable urban development, but they are also critically discussed, e.g., for being used as proof for already doing 'enough' in terms of sustainability and citizen participation. However, these assumptions are rarely empirically investigated. This paper applies a traceable methodological approach. We focus on long-term RwL processes in eight German cities, that were all part of the Cities of the Future funding program (2015–2022/23). Based on policy documents provided in city council information systems, we conducted a qualitative content analysis. By applying deductively and inductively developed codes, we capture the ways in which the RwL processes were a) linked to changes in urban polity, politics and policy, and b) strategically used by city officials. Our findings suggest that most of the RwLs had political impacts in several ways. Further, attempts of strategic use were particularly visible for politically highly impactful RwLs.

Industrious Landscaping: The Making and Managing of Natural Resources at Søby Brown Coal Beds

Abstract:This article has a twofold ambition. It offers a history of landscaping at Søby brown coal beds—a former mining site in western Denmark—and a methodological discussion of how to write such a study. Exploring this specific industrial landscape through a series of projects that have made different natural resources appear, we show that even what is recognized as resources shifts over time according to radically different and unpredictable agendas. This indicates that the Søby landscape is fundamentally volatile, as its resourcefulness has been seen interchangeably to shift between the brown coal business, inexpensive estates for practically savvy people, pasture for grazing, and recreational forest, among other things. We discuss these rifts in landscape history, motivated by what we refer to as industriousness, to show that, at sites such as Søby, both natural resources and historical developments are made through particular ad hoc perspectives, providing their own means and ends. This view of natural resources and development processes calls for a detailed analysis of shifting landscape projects and has an essential methodological corollary, namely that fieldwork must be improvisational, situated, open-ended, and somewhat random. We thus develop a method of “dustballing,” which implies being blown here and there, combining historical records and ethnographic description in an associative kind of fieldwork that somehow navigates itself. Our aim is thus to let methodology and our story of a ruined landscape mirror one another to attempt a novel kind of natural history suitable for the Anthropocene.

The urban in ecology: a quantitative textual analysis of the scientific literature over a century

Abstract:Many authors have described 'urban ecology' as a subfield of ecology that emerged in the 1990s and has expanded exponentially. We propose to take a step further and analyse the expansion of the 'urban' in ecology with a novel quantitative approach, with the aim to better understand the relationship between ecology and the urban. Previous quantitative assessments of the urban in ecology have focused on short to medium time spans (5 to 40 years) and on research coined as 'urban ecology', and have rarely considered the content of publications (e.g., vocabulary and topics) using quantitative methods. In this paper, we conduct a bibliometric assessment and an in-depth quantitative textual data analysis of a corpus of 960 articles published from 1922 to 2018 in 10 leading English-language journals in ecology and conservation biology. We address the following questions: (1) When and how have urban environments been integrated into ecological research during the past century? (2) What urban research topics have been investigated in ecology during the same period? (3) How have these research topics changed through time? Our results show that the urban was never entirely absent from publications in ecology. The quantitative analyses highlight three turning points (1970s, 1990s and 2000s) in the relationship between ecology and the urban. Moreover, they help visualize the shift from particularly scattered publications at the beginning of the period to publications characterized by a more homogeneous vocabulary, reflecting the stabilization of a research field focused on the urban in ecology. “The Forest Has Become Our New Living Room” – The Critical Importance of Urban Forests During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract:Out of nowhere the COVID-19 pandemic has turned people’s everyday lives upside down. Public places in urban areas were closed. However, leaving the house for recreational and leisure purposes in nature was still allowed in Germany – even during lockdown in March and April of 2020. As a result, urban forests have gained unprecedented importance – not only for recreational activities, but also for maintaining social contacts and coping with psychological stress. With these diverse requirements, many people have appropriated urban forests in new and changed ways. Using the example of the forests around the southern German city of Freiburg, a team of researchers from the Department of Societal Change at the Forest Research Institute Baden-Württemberg (FVA) carried out a mixed-method study to investigate how these appropriation practices are working and to shed some light on the relevance of forests for city residents in these circumstances. In addition to the statistical analysis of an online questionnaire, ethnographic observation data and Instagram posts were analyzed. This methodological triangulation was carried out in order to purposefully combine the strengths of each method while at the same time reducing the intrinsic biases and blind spots. This resulted in a better understanding of the importance of urban forest during this extraordinary period of time. Our results show that urban forests became critically important during the lockdown. Many visitors appropriated the forest with very different motives and for different purposes. For many visitors, the forest provided the same functions during this extraordinary period that public spaces otherwise do. The forest was not only consumed as a natural space, but also constructed by visitors as a social space. We can illustrate how this social meaning was both negotiated and reproduced. To provide an abstraction of our results, we refer to the theory of spatial appropriation as well as to new approaches in sociology of space that conceptualize space as a network of social relations. These results give rise to broader questions for future research projects, recreational forest research, forest and health, and forest planning.
From hard coal mining to a learning space for digitally supported participatory management of biodiversity

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe the conversion of the former coal mining site in Kamp-Lintfort into a public park and learning space for biodiversity. In 2020, an urban green space was established, featuring various aquatic and terrestrial habitats and a high level of biological diversity in the city centre with broad community support. Design/methodology/approach This study presents secondary data of a literature review on participatory management of biodiversity in urban green spaces, with a focus on the sustainability context, participation approaches, theoretical frameworks and the role of education. The example of Zechenpark Kamp-Lintfort (Germany) shows how urban green space development can meet the challenging demands of inner city development while fostering knowledge generation via citizen science and participatory biodiversity management. The study collected primary data on plant biodiversity using a citizen science approach to raise awareness and create opportunities for human–nature interaction. Findings Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 is the most important development goal in the context of participatory biodiversity management of urban green spaces. Most of the studies have a place-based focus and integration of local knowledge is the main reason for a participatory approach. The findings show how a green learning space can offer opportunities for digital learning as well as participatory biodiversity management in urban areas. The project lead to an increase in local citizens' awareness of biodiversity. Based on a literature review, this report identifies challenges and opportunities for establishing a green learning space for biodiversity education. The example illustrates that an urban green space can provide numerous possibilities for citizens and students to get involved and that it can foster the sustainable development of a new urban neighbourhood. Research limitations/implications A place-based approach limits generalisability. To overcome this limitation, a literature review was conducted, and the location was compared to two parks with similar site conversion history. Practical implications The example of developing an urban green space can inspire universities to take an active role in biodiversity management in urban green spaces, integrating biodiversity into university activities and creating a positive impact in the urban environment. Social implications Analysis of studies in the field shows that education deserves a more prominent role in theoretical frameworks. Originality/value The study represents an example of transition and citizen-led participatory management of biodiversity from a medium-sized city, transformation processes covering these aspects are underrepresented in literature.

‘Nature’s offensive’: The sociobiological theory and practice of Louis Van der Swaelmen

Abstract:During and after the First World War, Belgian landscape architect and planner Louis Van der Swaelmen attempted to develop a 'sociobiological' theory and practice of landscape architecture, urbanism and urbanization. Both in his writings and designs he combined biological approaches with sociopolitical concerns. In this article, I will focus on the ambitions and ambiguities of this approach. First, a history of ideas will show how the sociobiological theory of Van der Swaelmen was the outcome of an intermingling of the science of ethology and landscape theory. This trajectory culminated in the book Préliminaires d'art civique, in which he created a theory of urbanism based on the idea of urbanization as a process following biological laws, and an urban design approach based on geographical and geobotanical knowledge. The second part of the article will trace the translation of these ideas into the design (process) of the garden suburbs Le Logis and Floréal and will further question the use of a biological approach in urbanism, offering a critical reflection on today's (lack of) sociopolitical questions in ecological urbanism.
Emerging Urban Forests: Opportunities for Promoting the Wild Side of the Urban Green Infrastructure

Abstract:Many cities aim to increase urban forest cover to benefit residents through the provision of ecosystem services and to promote biodiversity. As a complement to traditional forest plantings, we address opportunities associated with “emerging urban forests” (i.e., spontaneously developing forests in cities) for urban biodiversity conservation. We quantified the area of successional forests and analyzed the species richness of native and alien plants and of invertebrates (carabid beetles, spiders) in emerging forests dominated by alien or native trees, including Robinia pseudoacacia, Acer platanoides, and Betula pendula. Emerging urban forests were revealed as shared habitats of native and alien species. Native species richness was not profoundly affected by the alien (co-)dominance of the canopy. Instead, native and alien plant species richnesses were positively related. Numbers of endangered plants and invertebrates did not differ between native- and alien-dominated forest patches. Patterns of tree regeneration indicate different successional trajectories for novel forest types. We conclude that these forests (i) provide habitats for native and alien species, including some endangered species, (ii) allow city dwellers to experience wild urban nature, and (iii) support arguments for adapting forests to dynamic urban environments. Integrating emerging urban forests into the urban green infrastructure is a promising pathway to sustainable cities and can complement traditional restoration or greening approaches.

Abstract:The unprecedented growth of metropolitan areas creates challenges for maintaining liveable and biodiverse cities. Urban areas face multiple demands on sparse space whilst various stakeholders similarly aim to promote greening efforts. In this context, authorities need to balance various policy objectives with demands from diverse urban stakeholders. Part of this challenge is the question how generalized data-driven green space planning approaches can be connected to local, contextualized understandings, practices and values related to green space. In this paper, we present a participative application of GIS that contributes to bridging the gap between data-driven and citizen-centred approaches in urban greening. Through an empirical study in Amsterdam, we show how this can link local priorities with larger-scale policy frameworks through deliberative and data-driven co-creation. In our case study, local stakeholders and researchers jointly identified criteria for greening, translated these into indicators and eventually identified potential locations for small-scale greening. Site visits by local experts helped to validate the model results and translate this into concrete plans for greening several locations. Our approach promoted a dialogue between stakeholders, linking spatial data with practical experiences and aligning local priorities with policy programmes. Combining various knowledges from involved stakeholders also contributed to the quality of analysis and validation of modelling results. By increasing transparency and inclusiveness of planning, it also contributed to acceptance of process outcomes and empowering local stakeholders. With increasing urgencies for environmental measures in many cities, we emphasize the potential of transdisciplinary GIS-approaches to navigate different interests and integrate various types of valuable knowledge. We suggest that similar approaches may be applied to other environmental challenges that have a strong spatial character.

Abstract:We report a case of a 7-month-old girl with a large facial hemangioma whose ulceration was successfully treated with 0.01% becaplermin (Regranex [Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Raritan, NJ], recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB) gel. She was noted to have a hemangioma precursor on her face and a heart murmur at the time of birth. After further evaluation, she was found to have a type 1 interrupted aortic arch, ventricular septic defect, and patent ductus arteriosis, and she subsequently underwent surgery to correct her cardiac anomalies. These associated abnormalities are part of PHACE syndrome: the association of posterior fossa brain malformations, hemangiomas, arterial anomalies, coarctation of the aorta and cardiac defects, and eye abnormalities. 1

Abstract:This paper positions urban ecology as increasingly conversant with multiple perspectives and methods for understanding the functions and qualities of diverse cities and urban situations. Despite progress in the field, we need clear pathways for positioning, connecting and synthesising specific knowledge and to make it speak to more systemic questions about cities and the life within them. These pathways need to be able to make use of diverse sources of information to better account for the diverse relations between people, other species and the ecological, social, cultural, economic, technical and increasingly digital structures that they are embedded in. Grounded in a description of the systemic knowledge needed, we propose five complementary and often connected approaches for building cumulative systemic understandings, and a framework for connecting and combining different methods and evidence. The approaches and the framework help position urban ecology and other fields of study as entry points to further advance interdisciplinary synthesis and open up new fields of research.

Abstract:It is shown in this paper how the opto-electrical interaction of a microwave device can be characterized by combining a large-signal network analyzer set-up with a modulated laser module. The concept is demonstrated by measuring a "thin film" M(etamorphic) HEMT under modulated optical (1550 nm laser light) illumination. The advantage of this approach is that the time-domain characteristics of the electrical currents, generated by the modulated laser light, can be visualised and analysed.
