Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigatethe expressions of NKG2A, NKG2C receptors and their ligand HLA-E in decidua of preeclampsia patients. METHODS Decidua tissues were collected from 30 patients with mild preeclampsia, 42 patients with severe preeclampsia and 46 normal pregnancy as contrast. The expressions of NKG2A, NKG2C protein were detected by immunohistochemitry and mRNAs of NKG2A, NKG2C and HLA-E genes were detected by RT-PCR. RESULTS The expression of HLA-E mRNA was significantly decreased in preeclampsia, especially in severe preeclampsia patients (P < 0.05); The mRNA and protein expression of NKG2A, NKG2C in severe preeclampsia group were significantly higher than that in normal pregnancy group (P < 0.05); In the severe preeclampsia group, the ratio of expression level of NKG2A and NKG2C was significantly lower than that of normal group and the mRNA and protein expression of NKG2C receptor were both significantly higher than that of NKG2A (P < 0.05); The mRNA expression level of HLA-E, NKG2A and NKG2C were closely related with clinical and biochemical indexes,such as blood pressure of late pregnancy and 24-hour proteinuria. CONCLUSION The decreased expression of HLA-E and the unevenly increase of NKG2A and NKG2C may involve in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia.
A Case-Study of the Resources and Functioning of Two Research Ethics Committees in Western India

Abstract:Assessing the resources and functioning of research ethics committees (RECs) in low-resource settings poses many challenges. We conducted a case study of two medical college RECs (A and B) in Western India utilizing the Research Ethics Committee Quality Assurance Self-Assessment Tool (RECQASAT) as well as in-depth interviews with representative members to evaluate REC effectiveness. REC A and B obtained 62% and 67% of allowable points on the RECQASAT. These scores together with findings from the in-depth interviews suggest the need for significant improvement in REC effectiveness particularly in the areas of membership and educational training, organizational aspects, recording minutes, communicating decisions, and REC resources. Developing evidence-based best practices and strengthening infrastructure are essential to enhancing REC efficacy in low-resource countries.

Abstract:We examine quantum chaotic scattering in the semiclassical regime for the two cases where the classical scattering is hyperbolic and nonhyperbolic. It is shown that in the nonhyperbolic case the energy-dependent S-matrix autocorrelation function C(\ensuremath{\varepsilon}) exhibits a cusp-shaped peak at \ensuremath{\varepsilon}=0 (where \ensuremath{\varepsilon} denotes the energy difference). This indicates that the fine scale fluctuations with energy of the S matrix are characteristically greatly enhanced in the nonhyperbolic case as compared with the hyperbolic case.

Abstract:Giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs of diameter 5-25 μm) of soy phosphatidylcholine (PC), resistant to intense light exposure (400-440 nm, ~15 mW·mm(-2)), underwent budding when containing chlorophyll a (Chla) in the lipid bilayer ([PC]:[Chla] = 1500:1). On the basis of image heterogeneity analysis using inverted microscopy, a dimensionless entropy parameter for the budding process was shown to increase linearly during an initial budding process. Lipophilic β-carotene (β-Car, [PC]:[β-Car] = 500:1) reduced the initial budding rate by a factor of 2.4, while the hydrophilic glycoside rutin ([PC]:[rutin] = 500:1) had no effect. Chla photosensitized oxidation of PC to form linoleoyl hydroperoxides, further leading to domains of higher polarity in the vesicles, is suggested to trigger budding. The average dipole moment (μ) of linoleic acid hydroperoxides was calculated using density functional theory (DFT) to have the value of 2.84 D, while unoxidized linoleic acid has μ = 1.86 D. β-Carotene as a lipophilic antioxidant and singlet-oxygen quencher seems to hamper oxidation in the lipid bilayers and delay budding in contrast to rutin located in the aqueous phase. The effect on budding of GUVs as a detrimental process for membranes is suggested for use in assays for evaluation of potential protectors of cellular integrity and functions under oxidative stress.

Abstract:Traced back to the one decade's development of research ethics in China,the author summarizes the current issues,such as: not sufficient implementing of informed consent,relatively loose review of IRB,IRBs lack ability to improve the review level and not provide much education opportunities to researchers,and not yet take account into the continuous review to the protocols approved before.By comparing the current issues of China and the conditions of U.S.in 1998,we can find some similarities exist,so we can learn from the lessons and experiences of the development of research ethics in the United and the other country,such as adding the model of region ethical review committee,instead of only institutional IRB.The author aims to point out some general ideas about research ethics capacity building,enforce training continuously,government pay much attention to IRB regulation and consider much on cultural elements,which are all bases for the road of sustainable development of research ethics in China.
Reversible Inhibition of 2,5-Alkyl Benzimidazoles on Chicken Sperm.∗

Abstract:Summary Motility, fructolysis, and fertilizing capacity of chicken sperm were determined following their subjection to various dose levels of 2,5-dimethyl-(DMB), 2-ethyl-5-methyl − (EMB), and 2 − hepta − 5 − methyl-(HMB) benzimidazoles. Motility after 1-2 hours and acid production from fructose after 3 and 6 hours were inhibited by the compounds with the following order of inhibition: DMB<EMB<HMB. Motility was completely inhibited by levels of DMB and EMB which had no effect on fructolysis. Fertilizing ability was prolonged by inhibitor levels which did not reduce fructolysis indicating that the disturbed metabolic process which inhibited motility was responsible for prolongation of fertilizing capacity and that this disturbance is not intimately concerned with fructolysis. The storage period for chicken semen was extended to 3 days with excellent fertility obtained with both DMB and EMB. The ease with which these compounds are removed by dilution and the lack of adverse after-effects appears to make them peculiarly useful for preservation of chicken sperm or possibly other types of cells or tissues. Abstract:Research ethics committees exist internationally to review research proposals to protect the rights and safety of human participants and researchers involved in research. These committees recruit a panel of expert and lay members, mostly on an unpaid voluntary basis, with relevant scientific experience to appraise these studies. Contemporary data in the UK show that women and people over 55 years old are overrepresented in these committee panels in the Health Research Authority, suggesting that there are potential barriers to inclusivity and participation. A variety of global approaches to tackle these barriers include targeting specific populations, such as faith or community leaders, or implementing quotas have been adopted. Further research is needed to understand likely barriers preventing participation in research ethics committees in the UK and how they may be overcome.

Applicability of the principle of respect for autonomy: the perspective of Turkey

Abstract:Turkey has a complex character, which has differences from the Western world or Eastern Asia as well as common points. Even after more than a century of efforts to modernise and integrate with the West, Turkish society has values that are different from those of the West, as well as having Western values. It is worth questioning whether ordinary Turkish people show an individualistic character. The principle of respect for individual autonomy arises from a perception of oneself as an individual, and the person's situation may affect the applicability of the principle. Patients who perceive themselves to be members of a community rather than free persons and who prefer to participate in the common decisions of the community and to consider the common interest and the common value system of the community concerning problems of their life (except healthcare or biomedical research) rather than to decide as independent, rational individuals may not be competent to make an autonomous choice. Expectations that such patients will behave as autonomous individuals may be unjustified. The family, rather than the patient, may take a primary role in decisions. A flexible system considering cultural differences in the concept of autonomy may be more feasible than a system following strict universal norms.

Abstract:Background: Informed consent (IC) is essential in defending the autonomy of potential participants in clinical research. Despite the advances in research ethics, particularly in IC, the different guidelines and codes have not been fully implemented. Several studies have presented consent deficiencies that have resulted in unethical practices or poor understanding of the IC. Main body: This article reviews the evolution of IC, from its philosophical origins and initial use in the Ottoman Empire (16th century) to its use in clinical research today. It also presents the vision of the European project i-CONSENT (Grant Agreement number: 741856), whose main purpose is to improve the understanding of ICs in research and identifies the key components of a new paradigm to develop patient-centred ICs. Conclusions: In many cases, the IC has served to protect the investigator or sponsor from complaints. Different ethical guidelines have sought to make the IC a more useful tool, with little success. Today's IC is mainly a bureaucratic and legal process that fails to consider the patient's point of view. In this context, the Guidelines for Tailoring the Informed Consent Process in Clinical Studies provide alternatives to the current IC process, focusing on the patient's opinions and making them part of the process, thereby improving clinical research quality.
Effects of a Classroom Curriculum on Physical Activity and its Psychological Predictors in High School Students

Abstract:Recent research indicates that recommended amounts of physical activity suggested for health benefits are rarely met in high-school–age adolescents. A pilot study was conducted to investigate the effects of a classroom health-education–based curriculum intervention on the physical activity of high school students. A within-group research design was used on data from a sample of ninth grade boys and girls (N = 104) who received six classroom health education lessons over 5 weeks based on social cognitive theory. The lessons focused on improvements in the theory-based psychological variables of mood, body satisfaction, physical self-concept, and exercise self-efficacy. Mixed-model repeated-measures ANOVAs indicated an overall statistically significant increase in physical activity, with no significant difference by sex. There were no statistically significant changes found in mood, body satisfaction, physical self-concept, or exercise self-efficacy. Results from a multiple regression analysis indicated that changes in the psychological variables tested explained 6% of the variance in physical activity change, which was not statistically significant. Results from this study may help researchers, school administrators, classroom health teachers, and developers of curricula better understand the role of the psychological factors of mood, body satisfaction, physical self-concept, and exercise self-efficacy in adolescent physical activity behavior and assist in the design of future school-based interventions.
Ethics in medical research: A quantitative analysis of the observations of Ethics Committees in research protocols.

Abstract:Objective: To determine the frequency of observations made by Research Ethics Committees (RECs) regarding non-compliance with ethical principles in research. Methods: We searched for articles published up to November 30, 2023. In the databases: PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar. Single-proportion meta-analyses were performed with the R V.3.6.1 program. PROSPERO Registry: CRD42021291893 Results: 9 publications were reviewed, including cross-sectional, retrospective cohort, and descriptive studies. Lack of adherence to the ethical principle of justice was detected in up to 100% of the protocols evaluated. In addition, 9% (95% CI: 7-12) of observations in Latin America and 15% (95% CI: 9-24) in Europe. Autonomy was observed in 26% (95% CI: 20-33) of the protocols, reaching 17% (95% CI: 13-22) in experimental studies. Beneficence, lack of adherence in the protocols evaluated from 41.17% to 77.38%, observations per protocol ranged from 5.26% to 27.11%. Discussion: The findings highlighted disparities between regions and types of studies, reflecting cultural, interpretive, and human and institutional resource differences. RECs should ensure thorough and equitable assessments, promote fair selection, respect autonomy, and maximize benefits while minimizing risks to participants. This study provides an assessment of ethical practices in medical research, highlighting key areas for improving compliance with fundamental ethical principles.

Abstract:Abstract Background Over the past two decades, Uganda has experienced a significant increase in clinical research driven by both academia and industry. This has been combined with a broader spectrum of research proposals, with respect to methodologies and types of intervention that need evaluation by Research Ethics Committees (RECs) with associated increased requirement for expertise. We assessed the competencies of REC members regarding review of research protocols with complex and emerging research study designs. The aim was to guide development of a training curriculum to improve the quality of scientific and ethical review. Methods This was a cross-sectional study design, with quantitative data collection methods. Research Ethics Committee members completed a structured pre-coded questionnaire on current competence with complex and emerging study design. REC members were asked to outline a list of additional topics for which they needed training. Data from coded questions were entered into Epidata Version 3.1 and then exported to STATA Version14.1 for analysis. Descriptive analysis was performed and findings are presented using percentages and frequencies. Results We enrolled 55 REC members from 6 RECs who have a total of 97 members. The majority of whom were males (56.4%, n = 31/55). The level of competence for review of selected study design was lowest for Controlled Human Infection Model (10.9%, n = 6) and reverse pharmacology design (10.9%, n = 6), and highest for cluster randomized study design (52.7%, n = 29) and implementation science research (52.7%, n = 29). Conclusion Competence for review of research protocols with complex and emerging study design was low among participating REC members. We recommend prioritising training of REC members on complex and emerging study designs to enhance quality of research protocol review.

[The Development of Research Ethics Involving Indigenous People in Taiwan: A Brief Introduction]

Abstract:Adhering to ethics protocols has become increasingly important in the process of doing research in Taiwan since the introduction of research-ethics mechanisms. Adhering to these protocols affects research on Taiwan's indigenous peoples due to the vulnerability of indigenous groups and to their increasing rights consciousness. The present paper explains the context of group rights from a national self-determination perspective and then discusses the current indigenous research-ethics mechanisms in Taiwan. The ethical guidelines for indigenous research in Canada, TCPS2 2014-Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans are referenced as a model for protocols that may foster positive and mutually trusting relationships between academic researchers and indigenous communities in Taiwan.

Abstract:In Sri Lanka, and across the world, ethics is becoming an ever increasingly integral part of clinical practice and biomedical research. Comprehensible and transparent ethics standards are essential to public trust in scientific research studies. In the pursuit of ethical research, Ethics Review Committees play a momentous role in the review and monitoring of biomedical research, especially in the case of clinical studies. National legislation and specific legal guidelines which systematically regulate the establishment, functioning, registration, and/or accreditation of such committees in Sri Lanka are yet to be developed. The National Medicines Regulatory Authority, an independent authority within the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health, plays an important role in the regulation of clinical trials in Sri Lanka. This review, albeit briefly, highlights the history of bioethics, the current state of Ethics Review Committees in Sri Lanka, and the recent efforts taken to assess their operations to ensure they meet international standards. In addition, this manuscript critically analyzes the membership composition and quorum requirements of selected Ethics Review Committees in Sri Lanka, as well as the challenges faced by these committees today.

Abstract:Abstract Background In the context of translational research, researchers have increasingly been using biological samples and data in fundamental research phases. To explore informed consent practices, we conducted a retrospective study on informed consent documents that were used for CARPEM’s translational research programs. This review focused on detailing their form, their informational content, and the adequacy of these documents with the international ethical principles and participants’ rights. Methods Informed consent forms (ICFs) were collected from CARPEM investigators. A content analysis focused on information related to biological samples and data treatment (context of sampling and collect, aims, reuse, consent renewal), including the type of consent. An automatic assessment of the readability of the ICFs were performed with the IT program “Flesch Score”. Results 29 ICFs from 25 of 49 studies were analyzed after selection criteria were applied. Three types of consent were identified: 11 broad consents, six specific consents, and two opt-out consents. The Flesch Scores showed that most of the documents were too complex to be fully understood by most of the potential research participants. Most of the biological samples were collected during the healthcare routine, but the information content about secondary use of biological samples varied between ICFs. All documents mentioned personal data treatment but information about their reuse was not standardized in the ICFs. Conclusions Our review of current IC procedures of CARPEM showed that practices could be improved considering new translational research methods. “Old fashion written ICFs” should be adapted to the translational research approach, to better respect individual rights and international research ethics principles. In this context, theoretically, a digital tool allowing dynamic information and consent of participants, through an electronic interactive platform may be a good way to promote more active participation in research. Nevertheless, its feasibility in the complex environment of biological samples and data research remains to prove. The way of a combination of a broad consent followed by dynamic information may be alternatively tested.

The readiness of the Asian research ethics committees in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic: A multi-country survey

Abstract:Background: COVID-19 is a highly challenging infectious disease. Research ethics committees (RECs) have challenges reviewing research on this new pandemic disease under a tight timeline and public pressure. This study aimed to assess RECs' responses and review during the outbreak in seven Asian countries where the Strategic Initiative for Developing Capacity in Ethical Review (SIDCER) networks are active. Methods: The online survey was conducted in seven Asian countries from April to August 2021. Two sets of online questionnaires were developed, one set for the chairs/secretaries and another set for the REC members.The REC profiles obtained from the REC members are descriptive in nature. Data from the chairs/secretaries were compared between the RECs with external quality assessment (SIDCER-Recognized RECs, SR-RECs) and non-external quality assessment (Non-SIDCER-Recognized RECs, NSR-RECs) and analyzed using a Chi-squared test. Results: A total of 688 REC members and 197 REC chairs/secretaries participated in the survey. Most RECs have standard operating procedures (SOPs), and have experience in reviewing all types of protocols, but 18.1% had no experience reviewing COVID-19 protocols. Most REC members need specific training on reviewing COVID-19 protocols (93%). In response to the outbreak, RECs used online reviews, increased meeting frequency and single/central REC. All SR-RECs had a member composition as required by the World Health Organisation ethics guidelines, while some NSR-RECs lacked non-affiliated and/or layperson members. SR-RECs reviewed more COVID-related product development protocols and indicated challenges in reviewing risk/benefit and vulnerability (0.010), informed consent form (0.002), and privacy and confidentiality (P = 0.020) than NSR-RECs. Conclusions: Surveyed RECs had a general knowledge of REC operation and played a significant role in reviewing COVID-19-related product development protocols. Having active networks of RECs across regions to share updated information and resources could be one of the strategies to promote readiness for future public health emergencies.
Midwifery students' reactions to ethical dilemmas encountered in outpatient clinics

Abstract:Background: Midwives are required to make ethical decisions with the support of respective codes of professional ethics which provide a framework for decision making in clinical practice. While each midwife should be ethically aware and sensitive to the ever-changing issues within reproduction, few empirical studies have examined the views of student midwives in relation to reproductive ethical dilemmas. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore midwifery students' reactions to a number of ethical dilemmas relating to women's experiences of reproductive decision making. Design: A series of focus groups were conducted with midwifery students who were asked to discuss five culturally significant scenarios including issues of knowledge acquisition regarding methods of family planning, removal or insertion of an intrauterine device, and abortion. Setting: A University in Turkey was the setting for this study. Participants: Purposeful sampling was adopted which resulted in five focus groups with a total of 57 midwifery students. Ethical considerations: The study was reviewed and granted formal ethical approval by an ethical committee at the Faculty of Health Science in Atatürk University. The head of the Faculty of Health Science approved the investigation. The participants received both oral and written information about the study and they gave their consent. Results: Five themes were identified from the analysis of the focus group data related to all five scenarios. These themes were 'the right to information', 'choice and protection', 'parental rights and welfare of the women', 'make a decision' and 'women rights and sexual abuse'. Conclusion: This study has shown that while students respected women's choice, they also expressed great ambivalence in some situations when personal values conflict with dominant societal beliefs and professional ethics. A focus on ethics education to include human rights is suggested as a means to enable students to explore their own social-value judgements, and as a means to limit the possible development of ethical confusion and moral distress.
Recovering the History of Informed Consent for Data Science and Internet Industry Research Ethics

Abstract:Respect for persons is a cornerstone value for any conception of research ethics--though how to best realize respect in practice is an ongoing question. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, "informed consent" emerged as a particular way to operationalize respect in medical and behavioral research contexts. Today, informed consent has been challenged by increasingly advanced networked information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the massive amounts of data they produce--challenges that have led many researchers and private companies to abandon informed consent as untenable or infeasible online. Against any easy dismissal, we aim to recover insights from the history of informed consent as it developed from the late 19th century to today. With a particular focus on the United States policy context, we show how informed consent is not a fixed or monolithic concept that should be abandoned in view of new data-intensive and technological practices, but rather it is a mechanism that has always been fluid--it has constantly evolved alongside the specific contexts and practices it is intended to regulate. Building on this insight, we articulate some specific challenges and lessons from the history of informed consent that stand to benefit current discussions of informed consent and research ethics in the context of data science and Internet industry research.
