Abstract:Reactions of alkaline earth metal salts M(NO3)2 (M = Mg, Ca, Sr) and ligands 5-aminotetrazole-1-acetic acid (Hatza) in water/methanol solution, respectively, produced three new complexes [Mg(atza)2(H2O)4] (1), [Ca(atza)2(H2O)4] (2) and [Sr(atza)2(H2O)3].2H2O (3). These compounds were structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1 and 2 have a mononuclear structure and the same coordination mode. Compound 3 has a 1D polymeric chain structure. In 1–3, amido group (–NH2) of atza ligand forms hydrogen bond N(5)–H(5)···N(O) with the neighboring carboxylate-O, tetrazolate-N or water molecule which stabilized the supramolecular assemblies.

Abstract:Three novel alkaline earth metal benzene-1,4-dioxylacetates M(L)H2O (M = Ca, Sr or Ba, L = benzene- 1,4-dioxylacetate) with three-dimensional (3D) hybrid frameworks were reported. Both Ca(L)H2O (1) and Sr(L)H2O (2) crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c while Ba(L)H2O (3) in the monoclinic space group P2(1). As determined by X-ray single-crystal analysis, in these compounds each metal ion is coordinated by eight O atoms: four from different carboxylate groups, two from one carboxylate group, one from the ether oxygen and one from one water molecule. Each L2- ligand coordinates to five alkaline earth metal centers through one of its ether oxygen atoms and two carboxylate groups adopting novel mu(3)-eta(2):eta(2) -bridging and mu(2)-eta(1):eta(1)-bridging coordination modes to give rise to a 3D network. Abstract:(4-Aminophenyl)arsonic acid (p-arsanilic acid) is used as an antihelminth in veterinary applications and was earlier used in the monosodium salt dihydrate form as the antisyphilitic drug atoxyl. Examples of complexes with this acid are rare. The structures of the alkaline earth metal (Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba) complexes with (4-aminophenyl)arsonic acid (p-arsanilic acid) have been determined, viz. hexaaquamagnesium bis[hydrogen (4-aminophenyl)arsonate] tetrahydrate, [Mg(H2O)6](C6H7AsNO3)·4H2O, (I), catena-poly[[[diaquacalcium]-bis[μ2-hydrogen (4-aminophenyl)arsonato-κ2O:O']-[diaquacalcium]-bis[μ2-hydrogen (4-aminophenyl)arsonato-κ2O:O]] dihydrate], {[Ca(C6H7AsNO3)2(H2O)2]·2H2O}n, (II), catena-poly[[triaquastrontium]-bis[μ2-hydrogen (4-aminophenyl)arsonato-κ2O:O']], [Sr(C6H7AsNO3)2(H2O)3]n, (III), and catena-poly[[triaquabarium]-bis[μ2-hydrogen (4-aminophenyl)arsonato-κ2O:O']], [Ba(C6H7AsNO3)2(H2O)3]n, (IV). In the structure of magnesium salt (I), the centrosymmetric octahedral [Mg(H2O)6]2+ cation, the two hydrogen p-arsanilate anions and the four water molecules of solvation form a three-dimensional network structure through inter-species O-H and N-H hydrogen-bonding interactions with water and arsonate O-atom and amine N-atom acceptors. In one-dimensional coordination polymer (II), the distorted octahedral CaO6 coordination polyhedron comprises two trans-related water molecules and four arsonate O-atom donors from bridging hydrogen arsanilate ligands. One bridging extension is four-membered via a single O atom and the other is eight-membered via O:O'-bridging, both across inversion centres, giving a chain coordination polymer extending along the [100] direction. Extensive hydrogen-bonding involving O-H...O, O-H...N and N-H...O interactions gives an overall three-dimensional structure. The structures of the polymeric Sr and Ba complexes (III) and (IV), respectively, are isotypic and are based on irregular MO7 coordination polyhedra about the M2+ centres, which lie on twofold rotation axes along with one of the coordinated water molecules. The coordination centres are linked through inversion-related arsonate O:O'-bridges, giving eight-membered ring motifs and forming coordination polymeric chains extending along the [100] direction. Inter-chain N-H...O and O-H...O hydrogen-bonding interactions extend the structures into three dimensions and the crystal packing includes π-π ring interactions [minimum ring centroid separations = 3.4666 (17) Å for (III) and 3.4855 (8) Å for (IV)].
Anogenital warts in Danish men who have sex with men

Abstract:To determine the prevalence of anogenital warts (AGWs) and concurrent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in men who have sex with men (MSM), and their knowledge of human papillomavirus (HPV). Attitudes towards the HPV vaccine among MSM are explored. A web-based cross-sectional survey on AGWs, sociodemographic factors and sexual behaviour conducted in August 2009 in Denmark. Overall 25.2% of the 1184 respondents reported a prior or current episode of AGWs. The prevalence of AGW was significantly higher in homosexuals compared with bisexuals, in men with high levels of education and in those with a high number of sexual partners within the last year. MSM with a history of another STI reported a significantly higher prevalence of warts. More than 70% did not know what causes AGWs. If a free HPV vaccine were to be offered, 94.4% would like to receive it. These data suggest a high prevalence of AGWs in Danish MSM. The awareness of HPV is low; however, the acceptance of a HPV vaccine seems high.

Abstract:Two new coordination polymers [Ca-3(bta)(2)(H2O)(8)].3H(2)O (1) and Ba-3(bta)(2)(H2O)(8) (2) were obtained by self-assembly of the corresponding metal carbonate with a flexible tripodal ligand, benzene-1,3,5-triacetic acid (H-3-bta), and their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The results revealed that complex 1 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P (1) over bar with a = 8.3045(10) Angstrom, b = 10.4883(10) Angstrom, c = 11.0184(16) Angstrom, a = 102.703(3)degrees, beta = 100.001(4)degrees, gamma =.108.842(7)degrees, V = 854.36(18) Angstrom(3), and Z = 1; compound 2 is in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a = 23.4363(8) Angstrom, b = 6.9782(3) Angstrom, c = 21.7150(8) Angstrom, beta = 111.4480(10)degrees, V = 3305.4(2) Angstrom(3), and Z = 4. Complexes I and 2 have two-dimensional network structures, and each bta(3-) ligand coordinates to Ca(II) or Ba(II) atoms using two of three carboxylate groups adopting different coordination modes: mu(3)-eta(2):eta(2)-bridging and mu(2)-eta(2):eta(1)-bridging coordination modes in 1 or mu(3)-eta(2):eta(2)-bridging and mu(3)-eta(2):eta(1)-bridging coordination modes in 2. The noncoordinated carboxylic group forms hydrogen bonds with an adjacent network to generate a three-dimensional structure. The luminescence properties of 1 and 2 were investigated and found that the complexes showed photoluminescence in the solid state at room temperature.
Structural diversity and supramolecular aggregation in calcium, strontium, and barium salicylates incorporating 1,10-phenanthroline and 4,4'-bipyridine: probing the softer side of group 2 metal ions with pyridinic ligands

Abstract:Group 2 metal complexes [Ca(SA)2(phen)]n (1), [Sr2(SA)4(phen)4] (2), and [Ba(SA)2(phen)2]n (3) (SA = salicylate) have been obtained by the addition of 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) to the corresponding metal salicylates, while the bipyridine derivatives {[Ca3(SA)6(H2O)4](4bpy)2}n (4), {[Sr(SA)2(H2O)3](4bpy)1.5(H2O)}n (5), and {[Ba(SA)2(H2O)3]-(4bpy)1.5(H2O)}n (6) have been synthesized starting from the respective metal carbonates, salicylic acid (SA-H), and 4,4'-bipyridine (4bpy). The new compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, pH measurements, thermal analysis, and spectroscopic measurements (IR, NMR, ultraviolet, and fluorescence). Molecular structure determination by single-crystal X-ray diffraction has been carried out for all the compounds. The thermal analysis studies indicate the loss of coordinated and/or lattice water molecules below 200 degrees C in 4-6 and the absence of any coordinated or uncoordinated water molecules in compounds 1-3. Compounds 1 and 3-6 exist as one-dimensional polymers while compound 2 crystallizes as a discrete dimer. Considerable variations have been observed in the molecular structures of 1-6 in terms of the geometry around the metal, the binding mode of salicylate, and the coordination behavior of the pyridine ligand. Calcium ion is hexacoordinated in 1, while in 4 both hexa- and heptacoordinated calcium ions are simultaneously present. Strontium exhibits coordination numbers of nine and eight in 2 and 5, respectively. The barium ions in 3 and 6 assume coordination numbers of eight and seven, respectively. While the OH group of the salicylate ligand does not directly bind the metal in 1-3, it coordinates to the metal ions in complexes in 4-6 in the un-ionized form. The 4bpy molecules show no direct ligation to the metal in 4-6; the phen ligands in 1-3, however, occupy one side of the coordination sphere around the metal. The presence of additional O-H...O, C-H...O, and N-H...O hydrogen bonding and pi-pi stacking in these compounds results in the formation of polymeric structures. The results obtained for the calcium complexes in this study have been compared with the available data in structural calcium chemistry with the aid of a detailed analysis of the Cambridge Structural Database.

Abstract:Two new lanthanide coordination compounds, RE(ABA)3(H2O)3·H2O (RE = Sm, Dy; ABA = 3-aminobenzoate), were obtained from ethanol solution and characterized structurally by X-ray diffraction methods. Both possess a monomeric molecular structure. Complex 1, Sm(ABA)3(H2O)3, is rhombohedral, space group R3c, with a = 18.999(3), c = 11.915(3) Å, V = 3724.6(12) Å3, D c = 1.784 Mg m−3, Z = 6, F(000) = 2010, GOF = 1.133 and R 1 = 0.0204. Complex 2, Dy(ABA)3(H2O)3, is isomorphous, with a = 18.956(4), c = 11.812(3) Å, V =3675.8(14) Å3, D c = 1.840 Mg m−3, Z = 6, F(000) = 2034 and R 1 = 0.0209. Photophysical properties of the complexes were investigated.

Abstract:A new complex of samarium(III) with malonic acid, Sm(HL)L.4H2O (H-2L = malonic acid), was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, thermogravimetric analysis, IR and fluorescence spectra. The structure of the complex was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The samarium ion is coordinated by six carboxylate and three water oxygen atoms which form a distorted monocapped square antiprism. The malonate (L2-) and bimalonate (HL-) have different coordination behaviours. The structure is a three-dimensional samarium-malonate-bimalonate network. The Sm-O bond lengths are in the range 2.396(6) 2.725(5) angstrom.
Calcium and strontium thiobarbiturates with discrete and polymeric structures

Abstract:Three new alkaline earth metal complexes, [Ca2(H2O)8(μ2-HTBA-O,O′)2(HTBA-O)2] (1), [Ca(H2O)5(HTBA-O)2]·2H2O (2), and [Sr(H2O)4(μ2-HTBA-O,S)2]n (3) (H2TBA = 2-thiobarbituric acid, C4H4N2O2S), were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, TG-DSC, and single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction data revealed that 1 and 2 are discrete structures, whereas 3 is a polymer. In 1 and 2, Ca2+ is seven-coordinate and forms a monocapped trigonal prism. In 1, the prisms are pairwise connected with the assistance of two [μ2-HTBA-O,O′]− ligands. In 3, Sr2+ is coordinated by four monodentate HTBA− via S or O donors and four waters, with the formation of a distorted square antiprism. The antiprisms are connected by μ2-O,S bridging HTBA−. Hydrogen bonding involving coordinated water and π–π interactions plays an important role in construction of the supramolecular 3-D structures in 1–3. Infrared spectroscopic data supported the structural data. The thermal stability of 1–3 decreases in the order 1 > 2 > 3. Dehydration of 1–3 was a multi-step process, followed by exothermic oxidative degradation of the 2-thiobarbiturate moiety between 290 and 800 °C.

Abstract:A series of dinuclear alkaline earth metal (Ae) structures Na-2-[(CHNH)(2)Ae-Ae(CHNH)(2)] (1-5) and (CHNH)(2)Ae-Ae(CHNH)(2) (6-10) containing Ae Ae bonds were optimized using density functional theory (DFT) and hybrid Hatree-Fock/DFT methods. The geometric and NBO analyses indicate that there are covalent Ae-Ae bonds in these alpha-diimine-stabilized structures, which have been further investigated by NBO second-order interaction and bond dissociation energetic examinations.
Structures and thermal properties of strontium and barium 1,3-propanediaminetetraacetates

Abstract:In neutral and acidic solution, homonuclear s-block metal complexes [Sr2(1,3-pdta)(H2O)3.5] n (1), {[Ba2(1,3-pdta)(H2O)6]·H2O} n (2), {[Sr(1,3-H2pdta)]·(H2O)} n (3), and [Ba(1,3-H2pdta)(H2O)3] n (4) {1,3-H4pdta=1,3-propanediamine-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid, CH2[CH2N(CH2CO2H)2]2} were isolated. In 1 and 2, hexadentate 1,3-pdta joins two metal ions via the diamine chain. In 3 and 4, the nitrogens of 1,3-H2pdta were protonated and show no coordination. There is no coordinated water in 3, unusual coordination for strontium. In 4, the coordination number is nine and there are three coordinated waters for each barium. One carboxy group of pdta is free without coordination. Thermal decomposition shows that temperatures of ligand elimination start at 408, 423, 298, and 250 °C for 1–4, respectively. Acidic condition is favorable for preparation of metal oxide at low temperature.

Abstract:Four salts of an anionic Iron(III) bis-complex, [Fe(LL-thr)2]1-, were synthesized from water or Methanol. The H2LL-thr is a tridentate ligand derived from the L-threonine amino acid, and the cations used are Li+ (1), Na+(2), K+(3), and Ba2+(4). The single-crystal X-ray diffraction showed that all the complexes are coordination polymers of different dimensionality. The Iron(III) complex binds to cations through its coordinated phenolate and non-coordinated carboxylate oxygens. While the Li+ forms a linear chain, all others have a pair of bridged cations intervening the iron(III) complexes. The 3D network of Ba2+ salt has a sizeable solvent-accessible space occupied by aquated chloride ions. The differences in circular dichroism (CD) spectra and significantly lower conductance values in water and methanol support partial retention of the polymeric nature in methanol. The visible spectra of the 4 in Methanol or water showed ~10 nm shift of the charge transfer bands from 3. However, the addition of Al3+ salt to 2 showed a significant colour shift. Further investigation confirmed that colour shift is due to partial protonation of the complex with proton generated from salt hydrolysis. Most reports on visual aluminium detection consider aluminium's binding as the shift's source. Present results show that protonation due to hydrolysis can skew the observation.

Abstract:Reactions of H2tza (H2tza = 1H-tetrazolate-5-acetic acid) with Mg(NO3)2.6H2O, Ca(NO3)2.4H2O, or Ba(NO3)2 with the presence of KOH under hydrothermal conditions, produced three new coordination compounds, [M(tza)(H2O)2] (M = Mg (1), Ca (2), Ba (3)). These compounds were structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1 and 3 display 2D structures, whereas 2 reveals a 1D structure with bridging tza ligand molecules as linkers. Furthermore, the luminescence properties of 13 at room temperature in the solid state were also investigated. The results show that the nature of metal ions play an important role in governing the molecular frameworks of 13, and the strong coordinate abilities of carboxylate and tetrazolate group, endow tza with abundant coordination modes.

Abstract:Reactions of ligand 4-[(1H-imidazol-4-yl)methylamino]benzoic acid (H2L) with transition metal salts led to the formation of three complexes [M(HL)(2)(H2O)(2)](M(II)=Mn(II)(1), Cd(II)(2), Cu(II)(3)) under different conditions. The single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that three complexes crystallized in the same triclinic space group P (1) over bar are isomorphous and isostructural, and the molecules are further connected by hydrogen bonds interactions resulting in formation of 3D structures. Sodium and Magnesium Complexes with Dianionic Alpha-Diimine Ligands

Abstract:A series of sodium and magnesium complexes with alpha-diimine ligands, [Na-2(L-iPr)(Et2O)](2) (1, L-iPr = [(2,6-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i)N(Me)C](2)), [Na-2(L-Mes)(Solv)(2)](2) (L-Mes = [(2,4,6-Me3C6H3)N(Me)C](2), 2a, solv = Et2O; 2b, solv = THF), [Na-4(L-Et)(2)](n) (3, L-Et = [(2,6-Et2C6H3)N(Me)C](2)), and [Mg(L-Mes)(THF)(3)] (4), have been synthesized by reduction of the diimine ligands with sodium or magnesium metal. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the sodium complexes have a 2:1 [Na2L] unit that aggregates to dimeric (1, 2a, 2b) or polymeric (3) structures, while the magnesium complex (4) shows a monomeric 1:1 structure. In all compounds 1-4, the ligand is doubly reduced to a dianion. The two Na+ ions in 1, 2a, 2b, and 3 show different coordination modes, one of which is chelated by the N donors of a ligand with supplementary Na-C bonds to the phenyl ring of another ligand within the [Na2L](2) dimer, while the other is bonded by the central C2N2 core of the ligand and solvent molecules (1, 2a, and 2b). Compound 3 displays a novel three-dimensional network. The Mg2+ ion in 4 is coordinated by a ligand molecule and three THF molecules. Density functional theory (DFT) computations on the sodium and magnesium complexes 1 and 4 confirmed their electronic structures and the dianionic character of the ligands.

Abstract:The synthesis, crystal structure and properties of the magnesium and calcium salts of p-anisic acid viz. [Mg(H 2O) 6](C 8H7O3) 2⋅2H 2O (C 8H7O3 = p-anisate or 4-methoxybenzoate) (1) and [Ca(H 2O)(C 8H7O3) 2] (2) are reported. The p-anisate ion is not coordinated to Mg(II) and functions as a charge balancing counter anion for the centrosymmetric octahedral [Mg(H 2O) 6] 2+ unit in 1. The unique lattice water molecule links pairs of [Mg(H 2O) 6] 2+cations and p-anisate anions with the aid of O-H ⋯O interactions. Abstract:A series of brightly colored alkaline earth metal 1,3-dimethylviolurates M(Me2Vio)2 have been prepared and fully characterized. The title compounds AE(Me2Vio)2·nH2O (AE = Mg, n = 6 (3); AE = Ca, n = 8 (4), AE = Sr, n = 6 (5); AE = Ba, n = 4 (6)) were obtained by neutralizing 1,3-dimethylvioluric acid monohydrate (=H(Me2Vio)·H2O; 2) with 0.5 equiv. of the corresponding metal dihydroxides AE(OH)2. The hair-like appearance of the Sr derivative 5 prevented the growth of single-crystals. This problem could be solved by crystallizing the crown ether derivative Sr(Me2Vio)2(18-crown-6) (5a). The isolated salts exhibit intense colors ranging from red to purple. Various attempts to prepare the beryllium derivative Be(Me2Vio)2 failed. Instead, work-up of the reaction mixtures provided pink crystals of a new modification of 2 formulated as [H3O][Me2Vio] (2b) as shown by an X-ray diffraction study. An unexpected oxidation reaction of the barium salt Ba(Me2Vio)2 led to formation of the novel mixed-anion salt Ba(Me2Vio)(Me2NO2Barb)·2H2O (8, Me2NO2Barb- = 1,3-dimethyl-5-nitrobarbiturate anion). Compound 8 could also be synthesized deliberately by treatment of Ba(OH)2 with a 1 : 1 mixture of 2 and 1,3-dimethyl-5-nitrobarbituric acid (7, =H(Me2NO2Barb)·H2O). All new compounds were fully characterized by their IR, Raman, NMR (1H, 13C{1H}) and UV-vis spectra as well as elemental analyses. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the solid-state structures of compounds 3, 4, 5a and 6 are governed by the typical coordination behavior of the alkaline-earth metals, i.e. increasing coordination numbers and a decreasing degree of hydration when going from Mg to Ba. The dimensions of the structures range from hydrogen-bonded ions (3) over monomeric, neutral complex molecules (4, 5a), to polymeric networks (6). The successful isolation of the mixed-anion barium salt 8 adds a new facet to the coordination chemistry of violurate and related ligands.

Abstract:In the structure of the title salt, {[Ba(μ3-C3H2N3O2)2(μ-H2O)(H2O)]·H2O} n , the barium ion and all three oxygen atoms of the water mol-ecules reside on a mirror plane. The hydrogen atoms of the bridging water and the solvate water mol-ecules are arranged across a mirror plane whereas all atoms of the monodentate aqua ligand are situated on this mirror plane. The distorted ninefold coord-ination of the Ba ions is completed with four nitroso-, two carbonyl- and three aqua-O atoms at the distances of 2.763 (3)-2.961 (4) Å and it is best described as tricapped trigonal prism. The three-dimensional framework structure is formed by face-sharing of the trigonal prisms, via μ-nitroso- and μ-aqua-O atoms, and also by the bridging coordination of the anions via carbonyl-O atoms occupying two out of the three cap positions. The solvate water mol-ecules populate the crystal channels and facilitate a set of four directional hydrogen bonds. The principal Ba-carbamoyl-cyano-nitro-somethanido linkage reveals a rare example of the inherently polar binodal six- and three-coordinated bipartite topology (three-letter notation sit). It suggests that small resonance-stabilized cyano-nitroso anions can be utilized as bridging ligands for the supra-molecular synthesis of MOF solids. Such an outcome may be anti-cipated for a broader range of hard Lewis acidic alkaline earth metal ions, which perfectly match the coordination preferences of highly nucleophilic nitroso-O atoms. Thermal analysis reveals two-stage dehydration of the title compound (383 and 473 K) followed by decomposition with release of CO2, HCN and H2O at 558 K.
