Abstract:Rapidly grouping local elements into an organized object (i.e., perceptual integration) is a fundamental yet challenging task, especially in noisy contexts. Previous studies demonstrate that ventral visual pathway, which is widely known to mediate object recognition, engages in the process by conveying object-level information processed in high-level areas to modulate low-level sensory areas. Meanwhile, recent evidence suggests that the dorsal visual pathway, which is not typically attributable to object recognition, is also involved in the process. However, the underlying whole-brain fine spatiotemporal neuronal dynamics remains unknown. Here we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings in combination with a temporal response function (TRF) approach to dissociate the time-resolved neuronal response that specifically tracks the perceptual grouping course. We demonstrate that perceptual integration initiates robust and rapid responses along the dorsal visual pathway in a reversed hierarchical manner, faster than the ventral pathway. Specifically, the anterior intraparietal sulcus (IPS) responds first (i.e., within 100 ms), followed by activities backpropagating along the dorsal pathway to early visual areas (EVAs). The IPS activity causally modulates the EVA response, even when the global form information is task-irrelevant. The IPS-to-EVA response profile fails to appear when the global form could not be perceived. Our results support the crucial function of the dorsal visual pathway in perceptual integration, by quickly extracting a coarse global template (i.e., an initial object representation) within first 100 ms to guide subsequent local sensory processing so that the ambiguities in the visual inputs can be efficiently resolved.
Multisensory Cortical Processing of Object Shape and Its Relation to Mental Imagery

Abstract:Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the multisensory processing of object shape in the human cerebral cortex and explored the role of mental imagery in such processing. Regions active bilaterally during both visual and haptic shape perception, relative to texture perception in the respective modality, included parts of the superior parietal gyrus, the anterior intraparietal sulcus, and the lateral occipital complex. Of these bimodal regions, the lateral occipital complexes preferred visual over haptic stimuli, whereas the parietal areas preferred haptic over visual stimuli. Whereas most subjects reported little haptic imagery during visual shape perception, experiences of visual imagery during haptic shape perception were common. Across subjects, ratings of the vividness of visual imagery strongly predicted the amount of haptic shape-selective activity in the right, but not in the left, lateral occipital complex. Thus, visual imagery appears to contribute to activation of some, but not all, visual cortical areas during haptic perception.
Spatiotemporal contour integration in the human brain

Abstract:Successful recognition of objects in cluttered scenes entails integration of fragmented images across space and time. Previous work focused on the integration of visual information across space. However, little is known about spatiotemporal integration that involves storing discrete image components in short-term memory and binding them across space and time. Our psychophysical work showed that collinear contours are reliably detected and identified when moving behind a narrow slit, suggesting that the spatiotemporal contour integration may not depend on V1 horizontal connections that are thought to underlie spatial contour integration. In the current study we used fMRI to investigate the neural mechanisms that mediate spatiotemporal contour integration under slit-viewing. The stimuli comprised arrays of randomly orientated Gabor patches, either with (contour stimuli) or without (random stimuli) embedded contour paths. The contour stimuli contained five embedded contours each comprising 4~9 collinear Gabor elements. The global orientation of the contours was jittered between 30°-45° or 135°-150°. In a blocked design the contour or random stimuli moved behind a slit whose width (0.75°) was equal to the average inter-element distance. As a result, at any given moment only one or parts of two contour elements could be seen through the slit. Within a block of trials a small proportion (12.5%) of stimuli contained vertical contours as targets. Observers were instructed to detect the target stimuli. A GLM analysis showed stronger fMRI responses to contour stimuli than random stimuli in higher dorsal visual areas (V7, V3B/KO, VIPS) and in the LOC, suggesting that spatiotemporal integration involves interactions between ventral and dorsal visual areas. We hypothesize that the dorsal areas may contribute to binding moving contour elements across space and time, and that the ventral regions may generate the integrated percept of the global contour.
Human MT+ mediates perceptual filling-in during apparent motion

Abstract:During apparent motion, spatially distinct items presented in alternation cause the perception of a visual stimulus smoothly traversing the intervening space where no physical stimulus exists. We used fMRI to determine whether the perceptual 'filling-in' that underlies this phenomenon has an early or late cortical locus. Subjects viewed a display comprised of concentric rings that elicited apparent motion (two concentric rings presented in alternation), flicker (the same rings presented simultaneously), or real motion. We independently localized the cortical regions corresponding to the path of apparent motion in early visual areas (V1, V2, VP, V3, V4v, V3A), as well as the human motion processing complex (MT+). Cortical activity in the path of apparent motion in early visual areas was similar in amplitude during both apparent motion and flicker. In contrast, cortical activity in MT+ was higher in amplitude during apparent motion than during flicker, but was lower in amplitude than during real motion. In addition, we observed overlap in the cortical loci of MT+ and the lateral occipital complex (LOC), a region involved in shape and object processing. This overlap suggests that these regions could directly interact and thereby support perceived object continuity during apparent motion.

Abstract:Chronic heart failure (CHF) has taken on epidemic proportions in the United States, with approximately 550,000 new cases annually. With the evolution of pharmacotherapy targeting neurohormonal pathways over the past 2 decades, the annual mortality in subjects with New York Heart Association (NYHA) class IV has dramatically improved from 52% in the seminal CONSENSUS trial to less than 20% in more recent trials in CHF. Suppression of the renin–angiotensin system (RAS) with various angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors has been proven to save lives in several large-scale trials of CHF, and all of them can be used at doses tested in clinical trials without clear preference of one over another. Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) can be used in place of ACE inhibitors in the case of ACE inhibitor intolerance with comparable results. However, some inconsistencies exist between trials with ARBs, and it is uncertain if the ARBs tested in clinical trials provide comparable clinical benefit whether used in place of or in combination with ACE inhibitors. Once ACE inhibition has been started, beta blockade should follow for all subjects with symptomatic CHF. Triple neurohormonal blockade can then be accomplished with the addition of an aldosterone receptor or ARB. Regardless of the exact agent used or sequence of initiation, the critical importance of careful monitoring of neurohormonal blockade cannot be overstated. Renal failure and hyperkalemia are the most important complications of suppression of the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS), and an increase in hospital admissions and death from hyperkalemia after publication of the RALES trial illustrates the danger of “casual” use of neurohormonal blockers. In light of the tremendous benefits of neurohormonal blockade, the only conclusion from these data is to initiate RAAS-blocking agents following the safety precautions tested in the respective clinical trials.
Recurrent Interaction Between Visual Cortical Areas Contributes to Contour Integration in the Human Brain: an Fmri-Guided TMS Study

Abstract:One of the challenging task for the human visual system is how they extract and integrate the local elements from the cluttered background into the global contour perception. Although previous studies have suggested the involvement of both striate and extrastriate cortex for this intermediate-level processing of visual perception, their relative roles and dynamic interactions between these areas are largely unknown. To examine whether the recurrent processing between the lower and higher-level visual areas plays a causal role in contour integration, we applied fMRI-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on early visual cortex (V1/V2) and intermediate-level visual area (V3B) at four SOAs (60/80, 90/110, 120/140 or 150/170 ms) (plus a no-TMS condition) while the participants performed a contour detection task. Results showed that both V1/V2 and V3B were critically involved in the process of contour integration. Importantly, the first critical inference time window for V1/V2 (120/140 ms, p < .05, Cohen's d = 0.57) follows that for V3B (90/110 ms, p < .05, Cohen's d = 0.58). The inference effect was also found at 150/170 ms for both areas (V1/V2: p = .05, Cohen's d = 0.50; V3B: p = .08, Cohen's d = 0.41). These findings suggested that the critical contribution of V3B to contour integration was earlier than that of V1/V2. The present study provides direct evidence supporting the causal role of the recurrent processing between V3B and V1/V2 in contour integration and agree with the data from monkey physiology. Our findings fit well with the incremental grouping theory (Roelfsema, 2006; Roelfsema & Houtkamp, 2011), in which a feedforward sweep generates a coarse template in higher visual areas with large receptive fields before the processing of detail information in lower visual areas with small receptive field through feedback mechanisms. Abstract:Understanding the neural processes underlying conscious perception remains a central goal in neuroscience. Visual illusions, whether static or dynamic, provide an effective ecological paradigm for studying conscious perception, as they induce subjective experiences from constant visual inputs. While previous neuroimaging studies have dissociated perceptual interpretation of visual motion from sensory input within the motion-sensitive area (hMT+) in humans, less is known about the role of V1 and its relationship to hMT+ during a bistable perception. To address this, we conducted a layer-fMRI study at 7 T with human participants exposed to a bistable motion quartet stimulus. Despite a constant sensory input, the bistable motion quartet elicits switching horizontal and vertical apparent motion percepts likely due to lateral and feedback connections across low and high-level brain regions (feedback processing). As control, we used an unambiguous version of the motion quartet, hereafter referred to as physical motion stimulus, where horizontal and vertical motion is physically presented as visual stimulus in an alternated fashion (feedforward processing). With the advantage of a sub-millimeter resolution gained at ultra-high field (7 Tesla), we aimed to unveil the differential laminar modulation of V1 (low visual area) and hMT+ (high-visual area) during the physical and bistable condition. Our results indicate that: 1) hMT+ functional activity correlates with conscious perception during both physical and ambiguous stimuli with similar strength. There is no evidence of differential laminar profiles in hMT+ between the two experimental conditions. 2) Between inducer squares, V1 shows a significantly reduced functional response to the ambiguous stimulus compared to the physical stimulus, as it primarily reflects feedback signals with diminished feedforward input. Distinct V1 laminar profiles differentiate the two experimental conditions. 3) The temporal dynamics of V1 and hMT+ become more similar during the ambiguous condition. 4) V1 exhibits reduced specificity to horizontal and vertical motion perception during the ambiguous condition at the retinotopic locations corresponding to the perceived motion. Our findings demonstrate that during the ambiguous condition, there is a stronger temporal coupling between hMT+ and V1 due to feedback signals from hMT+ to V1. Such feedback to V1 might be contributing to the stabilization of the vivid perception of directed motion at the face of constant ambiguous stimulation.

Abstract:Contour integration is a critical step in visual perception because it groups discretely local elements into perceptually global contours. Previous investigations have suggested that striate and extrastriate visual areas are involved in this mid-level processing of visual perception. However, the temporal dynamics of these areas in the human brain during contour integration is less understood. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to briefly disrupt 1 of 2 visual areas (V1/V2 and V3B) and examined the causal contributions of these areas to contour detection. The results demonstrated that the earliest critical time window at which behavioral detection performance was impaired by TMS pluses differed between V1/V2 and V3B. The first critical window of V3B (90-110 ms after stimulus onset) was earlier than that of V1/V2 (120-140 ms after stimulus onset), thus indicating that feedback connection from higher to lower area was necessary for complete contour integration. These results suggested that the fine processing of contour-related information in V1/V2 follows the generation of a coarse template in the higher visual areas, such as V3B. Our findings provide direct causal evidence that a recurrent mechanism is necessary for the integration of contours from cluttered background in the human brain.

Abstract:Integrating visual elements into contours is important for object recognition. Previous studies emphasized the role that the primary visual cortex (V1) plays in this process. However, recent evidence suggests that contour integration relies on the coordination of hierarchical substrates of cortical regions through recurrent connections. Many previous studies presented the contour at the same onset-time as the trial, which caused the subsequent neural imaging data to incorporate both visual evocation and contour integration activities, and thus confounding the two. In this study, we varied both the contour onset-time and contour fidelity and used EEG to examine the cortical activities under these conditions. Our results suggest that the temporal N300 represents the grouping and integration of visual elements into contours. Before this signature, we observed interhemispheric connections between lateral frontal and posterior parietal regions that were contingent on the contour location and peaked at around 150ms after contour appearance. Also, the magnitudes of connections between medial frontal and superior parietal regions were dependent on the timing of contour onset and peaked at around 250ms after contour onset. These activities appear to be related to the bottom-up and top-down attentional processing during contour integration, respectively, and shed light on how these processes cooperate dynamically during contour integration.

Integration of Motion and Form Cues for the Perception of Self-Motion in the Human Brain

Abstract:When moving around in the world, the human visual system uses both motion and form information to estimate the direction of self-motion (i.e., heading). However, little is known about cortical areas in charge of this task. This brain-imaging study addressed this question by using visual stimuli consisting of randomly distributed dot pairs oriented toward a locus on a screen (the form-defined focus of expansion [FoE]) but moved away from a different locus (the motion-defined FoE) to simulate observer translation. We first fixed the motion-defined FoE location and shifted the form-defined FoE location. We then made the locations of the motion- and the form-defined FoEs either congruent (at the same location in the display) or incongruent (on the opposite sides of the display). The motion- or the form-defined FoE shift was the same in the two types of stimuli, but the perceived heading direction shifted for the congruent, but not for the incongruent stimuli. Participants (both sexes) made a task-irrelevant (contrast discrimination) judgment during scanning. Searchlight and ROI-based multivoxel pattern analysis revealed that early visual areas V1, V2, and V3 responded to either the motion- or the form-defined FoE shift. After V3, only the dorsal areas V3a and V3B/KO responded to such shifts. Furthermore, area V3B/KO shows a significantly higher decoding accuracy for the congruent than the incongruent stimuli. Our results provide direct evidence showing that area V3B/KO does not simply respond to motion and form cues but integrates these two cues for the perception of heading.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Human survival relies on accurate perception of self-motion. The visual system uses both motion (optic flow) and form cues for the perception of the direction of self-motion (heading). Although human brain areas for processing optic flow and form structure are well identified, the areas responsible for integrating these two cues for the perception of self-motion remain unknown. We conducted fMRI experiments and used multivoxel pattern analysis technique to find human brain areas that can decode the shift in heading specified by each cue alone and the two cues combined. We found that motion and form cues are first processed in the early visual areas and then are likely integrated in the higher dorsal area V3B/KO for the final estimation of heading.
Neural Correlates of Spatio-Temporal Grouping in Bistable Apparent Motion Perception

Abstract:Upon viewing dynamic ambiguous visual stimuli, observers often experience spontaneous transitions between two competing percepts although the physical stimulation remains unchanged. This phenomenon is termed as "bistable perception", of which the perceptual groupings in space and time need to be implemented jointly. The Ternus display as one of the typical ambiguous apparent motion, depending on the interstimulus interval (ISI) between each frame of the motion sequence, can elicit two different percepts: explicit element motion (EM) percept (with shorter ISI, i.e., 50ms) or group motion (GM) percept (with longer ISI, i.e., 230ms) (i.e., the two filler conditions). More importantly, when the ISI reaches certain threshold (as measured by psychophysical method for each individual), the two percepts can be alternatively induced with equal possibilities with the bottom-up stimuli being constant (i.e., the bistable condition). By adopting fMRI in the present study, we aimed to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying the bistable apparent motion perception. As compared to the explicit EM percept (ISI=50 ms), the explicit GM percept (ISI=230 ms) significantly activated the bilateral middle occipital gyrus extending to bilateral lateral occipital cortex (LOC), suggesting that the explicit GM percept implicated the perceptual grouping process in the ventral visual areas. In the bistable condition, when the EM percept won the bistable percept competition, the left inferior parietal cortex showed not only increased neural activity, but also enhanced functional connectivity with premotor cortex, indicating the functional role of the dorsal parieto-premotor stream in subserving temporal grouping. In contrast, when the GM percept won the competition, the default-mode-network in medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) showed reduced deactivation, indicating the functional role of MPFC in spatial grouping, rather than temporal grouping. Mapping object space dimensions: new insights from temporal dynamics

Abstract:How is object information organized in high-level visual cortex? Recently, a comprehensive model of object space in macaques was proposed, defined by the orthogonal axes of animacy and aspect ratio (Bao et al., 2020). However, when using stimuli that dissociated category, animacy, and aspect ratio in humans, no tuning of aspect ratio was observed in fMRI data (Yargholi & Op de Beeck, 2023). This difference could be a result of different stimuli, the limited temporal resolution of fMRI, or information available about the presented stimuli. Here, we asked if and when information about aspect ratio, animacy, and category is available over time. We collected whole-brain electroencephalography (EEG) data while participants (N = 20) viewed the stimulus set used by Yargholi & Op de Beeck (2023). To mask object details and increase reliance on shape information, we also presented silhouette versions of the stimuli. Stimuli were presented in 5Hz streams using rapid serial visual presentation, with intact and silhouette stimuli sets were shown in separate streams. Using standard multivariate decoding pipelines and representational similarity analysis, we found that aspect ratio, category, and animacy were represented during visual object processing. The dominant dimension was modulated by stimulus type, demonstrating that the observable dimensions of object space depend on the nature of the stimuli presented. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that aspect ratio is represented during object processing, however earlier and more transiently than categorical dimensions, such as animacy. By focusing on underlying temporal dynamics, our results provide clear new insights into the contradicting findings reported in previous work and reveal a more nuanced understanding of how object space evolves over time.

Perceptual grouping and inverse fMRI activity patterns in human visual cortex.

Abstract:We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure activity in human visual cortex, including a higher object processing area, the lateral occipital complex (LOC), and primary visual cortex (V1), in response to a perceptually bistable stimulus whose elements were perceived as either grouped into a shape or randomly arranged. We found activity increases in the LOC and simultaneous reductions of activity in V1 when the elements were perceived as a coherent shape. Consistent with a number of inferential models of visual processing, our results suggest that feedback from higher visual areas to lower visual areas serves to reduce activity during perceptual grouping. The implications of these findings with respect to these models are discussed.
Brain representations of motion and position in the double-drift illusion

Abstract:In the 'double-drift' illusion, local motion within a window moving in the periphery of the visual field alters the window's perceived path. The illusion is strong even when the eyes track a target whose motion matches the window so that the stimulus remains stable on the retina. This implies that the illusion involves the integration of retinal signals with non-retinal eye-movement signals. To identify where in the brain this integration occurs, we measured BOLD fMRI responses in visual cortex while subjects experienced the double-drift illusion. We then used a combination of univariate and multivariate decoding analyses to identify (1) which brain areas were sensitive to the illusion and (2) whether these brain areas contained information about the illusory stimulus trajectory. We identified a number of cortical areas that responded more strongly during the illusion than a control condition that was matched for low-level stimulus properties. Only in area hMT+ was it possible to decode the illusory trajectory. We additionally performed a number of important controls that rule out possible low-level confounds. Concurrent eye tracking confirmed that subjects accurately tracked the moving target; we were unable to decode the illusion trajectory using eye position measurements recorded during fMRI scanning, ruling out explanations based on differences in oculomotor behavior. Our results provide evidence for a perceptual representation in human visual cortex that incorporates extraretinal information.

Visual Cortex Representation of Achiasmic Retinal Inputs

Abstract:In achiasmia (absence of optic chiasm), the nasal retina is abnormally projected to the ipsilateral hemisphere such that the LGN and early visual areas in one brain hemisphere receive retinal inputs of the full visual field of the ipsilateral eye. This rarely diagnosed condition presents a unique opportunity to study common developmental rules of the visual cortex, which maintains a topological map of retinal inputs. A 23-year-old male with a congenital nystagmus and achiasmia (confirmed with MRI) was evaluated using BOLD fMRI. The participant monocularly viewed visual stimuli, which included a rotating wedge and an expanding ring for retinotopy, an expanding-contracting ring and a stationary ring to map MT/MST, and rapidly presented faces, scenes, objects, and scrambled images to map LOC. Resting-state data was also acquired while the participant closed his eyes but stayed awake. The obtained retinotopy was of excellent quality. Within the retinotopically defined visual areas V1– V3, the participant’s retinotopic representation of the ipsilateral visual field is a mirror image of its contralateral field representation. The two are superimposed on the ipsilateral hemisphere of each eye such that two points symmetrically located across the vertical meridian are mapped to the same point on the cortex, consistent with a recent study (Hoffmann et al., 2011 SfN). With monocular viewing, activations of V1-V3 are limited to the ipsilateral hemisphere relative to the viewing eye. In contrast, activations of MT and LOC are bilateral, as in normally sighted individuals. Moreover, even though evoked activities in V1-V3 are unilateral to the eye of origin, the resting-state activities in these areas showed the normal high correlation (r=0.6-0.9) between the hemispheres. These findings suggest that while the early visual areas develop according to the abnormal topological organization of the retinal projections, later stages of visual processing have "fixed" the topological abnormality. Abstract:The primary visual cortex (area 17 or V1) is not thought to receive input from nonvisual extrastriate cortical areas. However, this has yet to be shown to be the case using sensitive tracers in the part of area 17 subserving the peripheral visual field. Here we show using retrograde tracers that peripheral area 17 subserving the visual field at an eccentricity of 10-20 degrees receives projections from the core and parabelt areas of the auditory cortex as well as from the polysensory area of the temporal lobe (STP). The relative strength of these projections was calculated for each injection by computing the proportions of retrogradely labeled neurons located in the auditory and STP areas with respect to number of labeled neurons constituting the established projection from the superior temporal sulci (STS) motion complex (middle temporal area, medial superior temporal, fundus of the superior temporal area). In peripheral area V1 the projection from auditory cortex corresponds to 9.5% of that of the STS motion complex and STP to 35% of that from the STS motion complex. Compared to peripheral area 17, central and paracentral area 17 showed considerably weaker inputs from auditory cortex (0.2-0.8%) but slightly more from STP cortex (3.5-6.1%). The present results show that the connectivity of area 17 is eccentricity dependent. Direct projections from auditory and STP cortex to peripheral area 17 have important consequences for higher visual functions of area 17, including multimodal integration at early stages of the visual cortical pathway.
Global Versus Local: Double Dissociation Between MT+ and V3a in Motion Processing Revealed by a TMS Study

Abstract:The functional properties of motion selective areas in human visual cortex, including V3A, MT+, and IPS (intraparietal sulcus) are far from being fully understood . To examine the functional specialization of these areas for global and local motion processing, we applied offline continuous theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) aided by MRI-based neuronavigation to temporarily attenuate normal functioning of unilateral V3a, MT+ and IPS in different daily sessions. Vertex was also targeted as a control site. In each session, before and after TMS, subjects were asked to discriminate the global directions of two successive random dot kinematograms (RDKs), which consisted of 400 black dots within a circular area (9째 in diameter). Four conditions were used: two motion coherence levels (100% or 40%) at two stimulus locations (left or right 9째 horizontal eccentricity). We found that V3a stimulation selectively impaired discrimination of the 100% coherence motion, while MT+ stimulation selectively impaired discrimination of the 40% coherence motion. IPS stimulation impaired discrimination of both motion stimuli. All the impairments were specific to the stimuli presented contralaterally to the TMS site. Vertex stimulation did not lead to any change in motion discrimination. The double dissociation between the TMS effects on MT+ and V3a suggest distinctive roles of these two regions in motion processing. Under the 100% coherence condition, motion discrimination could be a local motion task because every dot moves in the same direction, so that local processing of motion signals is sufficient for identifying the direction of the RDK. However, under the 40% coherence condition, global processing is required to integrate different motion directions from many dots to form a coherent motion perception. Thus, our results suggest that MT+ and V3a dominate in global and local motion processing, respectively, and the outputs of these two areas may both project to IPS for further processing. Dynamic categorization rules alter representations in human visual cortex

Abstract:Everyday perceptual tasks require sensory stimuli to be dynamically encoded and analyzed according to changing behavioral goals. For example, when searching for an apple at the supermarket, one might first find the Granny Smith apples by separating all visible apples into the categories “green” and “non-green”. However, suddenly remembering that your family actually likes Fuji apples would necessitate reconfiguring the boundary to separate “red” from “red-yellow” objects. This flexible processing enables identical sensory stimuli to elicit varied behaviors based on the current task context. While this phenomenon is ubiquitous in nature, little is known about the neural mechanisms that underlie such flexible computation. Traditionally, sensory regions have been viewed as mainly devoted to processing inputs, with limited involvement in adapting to varying task contexts. However, from the standpoint of efficient computation, it is plausible that sensory regions integrate inputs with current task goals, facilitating more effective information relay to higher-level cortical areas. Here we test this possibility by asking human participants to visually categorize novel shape stimuli based on different linear and non-linear boundaries. Using fMRI and multivariate analyses of retinotopically-defined visual areas, we found that shape representations in visual cortex became more distinct across relevant decision boundaries in a context-dependent manner, with the largest changes in discriminability observed for stimuli near the decision boundary. Importantly, these context-driven modulations were associated with improved categorization performance. Together, these findings demonstrate that codes in visual cortex are adaptively modulated to optimize object separability based on currently relevant decision boundaries.
