Abstract:Titanium silica (TS-1) membrane catalysts grown on the surfaces of spherical substrates can both exploit the high catalytic performance and facilitate their separation from products after the reaction. In this work, a simple static crystallization method was used to perform the in situ construction of a TS-1 membrane on the surfaces of micron-sized spherical carriers. The shortcomings of the TS-1 membrane under static crystallization conditions were overcome by in situ dynamic crystallization, and the effect of rotation speed on the formation of the molecular sieve membrane was investigated. The results showed that the molecular sieve membrane was smooth and homogeneous, with a higher synthesis efficiency at a slow rotational speed. The micron TS-1 spherical membrane catalytic chloropropene epoxidation reaction was investigated in a fixed bed, and the conversion of hydrogen peroxide and selectivity of epichlorohydrin reached 99.4 and 96.8%, respectively. After being reused twice, the catalyst still maintained a stable catalytic performance.

Abstract:Titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) is an important catalyst for many oxidation reactions. Catalytically active titanium species with favourable particle morphology and pore structure to support diffusion are vital to the performance of this catalyst. Herein, by growing TS-1 nanocrystals on solid silicalite-1 cores followed by hollowing both the cores and TS-1 nanocrystals, a macro-meso-microporous (3 M) structured 3 M-TS-1(ML) catalyst was produced using only a solo template, tetrapropylammonium hydroxide. This catalyst demonstrates superior catalytic performance for propylene epoxidation to propylene oxide, and contains only catalytically active Ti(OH)(OSi)3, Ti(OH)2(OSi)3 and Ti(OH)4(OSi)2 species and is free from inactive Ti species such as anatase-TiO2. Through rationally designed comparative evaluations, this work shows that the high catalytic activity of 3 M-TS-1(ML) is the results of both having excellent diffusion conditions from its unique 3-tiered pore structure and containing high activity Ti species such as Ti(OH)4(OSi)2.
Epoxidation of Propylene with Dilute H 2 O 2 over Titanium Silicalite Containing Trace Aluminum

Abstract:Titanium silicalite (TS-1) was successfully synthesized by using TPABr as the template and silica sol as silicon source in a 100 l stainless steel autoclave. IR, XRD, UV--vis, elemental analysis, and 27 Al and 31 P MAS NMR were used to characterize the synthesized products. The results show that the synthesized material has an MFI structure with high crystallinity and large crystal size and two kinds of titanium species. Trace aluminum in silica sol is also incorporated into the zeolite framework. The synthesized TS-1 exhibits high activity in the epoxidation of propylene with dilute H 2 O 2 with high selectivity to methyl mono-ethers and low selectivity to propylene oxide (PO). The low selectivity toward PO is due to the residual acidity onto TS-1. The selectivity of PO can reach up to 90% through adjusting the pH of the reaction mixture. Extra amounts of base decrease the H 2 O 2 utilization and the H 2 O 2 conversion. However, in over acid-treated TS-1 in which part removal of extra-framework titanium takes place, the utilization of H 2 O 2 is quite different: for the low Si/Ti ratio of TS-1, the H 2 O 2 utilization increases. But the utilization of H 2 O 2 does not change for the high Si/Ti ratio TS-1. Thermal analysis shows that the as-synthesized TS-1 exhibits high activity and thermal stability in the calcined range 540-900 °C.

Abstract:Titanosilicate with H2O2 stands out as a highly consequential oxidized catalytic system, prized for its user‐friendly operation, mild conditions, and eco‐friendly attributes. However, a synthesis strategy for large surface area titanosilicalites approaching the theoretical lowest Si/Ti ratio without extra‐framework Ti species remains an ongoing challenge. In this study, we successfully synthesized single‐crystalline Ti‐rich nanosized aggregated TS‐1 by shielding effect with a Si/Ti polymer. This polymer demonstrated effectiveness in restraining TiO2 species by regulating the proximity of Si/Ti species in Ti‐Diol‐Si polymers. The polymer not only facilitated the synthesis of single‐crystalline Ti‐rich TS‐1 but also exploited the chain length of PEG, functioning as a shielding cage by hydrogen bonds, to synthesize nanosized aggregated TS‐1 (TS‐1‐PEG400). This TS‐1‐PEG400 exhibited superior conversion (~60%), selectivity (~90%), and stability in 1‐hexene epoxidation. This study not only establishes a synthesis pathway for Ti‐rich TS‐1 but also holds the potential to enhance related industrial oxidation reactions involving titanosilicates and H2O2.

Abstract:Rational regulation of local environment of Ti‐sites in TS‐1 harbours tremendous industrial and scientific significance to epoxidation reactions. Herein, we report a facile and environment‐friendly strategy to boost catalytic selectivity by covering the Ti‐sites on external surface of TS‐1 (ITS‐1) without sacrificing activity of internal Ti sites. By quantitative analysis of d3‐acetonitrile and quinoline‐DRIFTS, 1H MAS NMR and XPS, it is found that percentage of external Ti‐sites decreased from 11% to 6% after depositing surface silica islands. This successfully inhibits ring‐opening reaction of 1,2‐epoxyhexane on catalyst surface, as demonstrated by slower kinetic decomposition rate of 1,2‐epoxyhexane. Compared with conventional TS‐1 catalyst, selectivity of 1,2‐epoxyhexane over ITS‐1 catalyst significantly increased from 83.5% to 98.5% while maintaining high 1‐hexene conversion. Furthermore, overmuch surface silica coverage only leads to extremely low conversion (2%) due to inhibition of mass transfer. This work paves the way for rational construction of Ti‐containing catalysts for 1‐hexene epoxidation.

Abstract:A compact zeolite membrane of TS-1 was crystallized on the surface of Au–Pd/TiO 2 –SiO 2 catalyst pellets by a hydrothermal synthesis method. The synthesized capsule catalyst has a core–shell structure without pinholes and cracks. For the reaction of propylene epoxidation using oxygen and hydrogen, the synthesized capsule catalyst shows much higher propylene conversion and PO yield than those of the conventional physically mixed catalyst with the same composition. The core–shell capsule catalyst provides a tailor-made confined reaction environment, which can be extended to various consecutive reactions as the shell and core components are independent catalysts of different reactions.

Abstract:The contribution introduced a new type of titanosilicate molecular sieve HTS-1-X with high specific surface area, high titanium content, hierarchical pores, hydrophobicity, and reusable by one-step dry gel conversion method using phenolic resin as a hydrophobic reagent. The HTS-1-X catalysts showed good catalytic ability in the propylene epoxidation reaction, and the high specific surface area greatly increased the conversion rate of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). By controlling the content of phenolic resin, the selectivity of propylene oxide (PO) could reach the optimal value. After five cycles of reusability, the selectivity of PO was still maintained at a high position (88.94%). Through Raman, 13C-MAS-NMR and other characterization methods, the possible preparation mechanism of phenolic resin hydrophobic modification of titanium silicalite-1 was proposed. This research put forwarded a simple and novel operation method to make high-performance and hydrophobic hierarchical porous molecular sieve, making it a highly efficient catalyst that would be widely used in the oxidation of macromolecular olefins. The simple and efficient dry gel conversion method was chosen to prepare titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) instead of the traditional hydrothermal synthesis method. The hydrophobic carbon source (phenolic resin) was added in the one-step synthesis process, and the hydrophobic hierarchical porous HTS-1-X was successfully synthesized.
TS-1 Molecular Sieves, Characterization and Catalytic Performance for Propylene Epoxidation

Abstract:TS-1 molecular sieves were synthesized through two different methods,one was using complex to improve the stability of titanium source and the other was the traditional method. These samples were characterized by using SEM,XRD,micro-structural analysis and IR,and their catalytic performance for propylene epoxidation with high concentration of hydrogen peroxide was investigated. Results showed that the TS-1 samples prepared by the two different methods have the same frame structure,shape,surface area and pore size distribution etc.,and their catalytic performance is also appropriately the same. However,the grain size form the traditional method is not uniform,while that from the method using complex to improve the stability of titanium source appears as lamellate uniform TS-1 molecular sieve. These results provide a possibility for the further study of TS-1 preparation and its industrial application through a relatively inexpensive synthetic process.

Abstract:The epoxidation reaction over titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) zeolites is a green way to produce epoxides that are important intermediates for chemicals. Nevertheless, the conventional microporous TS-1 zeolite shows limited diffusion ability for bulky molecules, leading to poor activity and low selectivity. Constructing hierarchical porosity in microporous materials is an effective strategy to enhance the diffusion properties of catalysts. However, there are few reports on the design and synthesis of TS-1 zeolites with hierarchical structure featuring multilevels, interconnectivity, and regularity for efficient diffusion and epoxidations. Herein, hierarchical TS-1 zeolites with ordered macro–meso–microporosity (OMMM-TS-1) are obtained by a method combining a templated effect of ordered macro–mesoporous matrices and a confined in situ crystallization process. The OMMM-TS-1 possesses ordered macropores with tunable size (∼200–600 nm), ordered mesopores (∼8 nm), and intact micropores (∼0.5 nm). The OMMM-TS-1 achieves a cyclooctene conversion as 3.6 times and 1.8 times and a selectivity to epoxy product as 1.6 times and 1.3 times higher than the conventional TS-1 (C-TS-1) and nanosized TS-1 (Nano-TS-1) zeolites, respectively. The OMMM-TS-1 also outperforms the C-TS-1 and Nano-TS-1 zeolites in epoxidations of a series of alkenes. Such a novel hierarchical structure can be applied in the design and synthesis of many other catalysts.

Abstract:The deactivation reason of titanium–silicon zeolites in propylene epoxidation was investigated through characterizing fresh, deactivated, and regenerated TS‐1 zeolite catalysts. The blockage of partial pore channels and the coverage of partial active sites over TS‐1 by ethers and oligomers led to the catalyst deactivation. Titanium silicalite‐1 (TS‐1) serves as an effective catalyst for propylene epoxidation in the hydrogen peroxide propylene oxide (HPPO) process, attracting wide attention from researchers and industry. Nonetheless, the TS‐1 catalyst experienced inevitable deactivation during industrial applications, which adversely impacts its lifespan. To enhance reaction stability of catalyst, the present work conducted a systematic investigation into the deactivation reason of the TS‐1 catalyst. The fresh, deactivated, and regenerated catalysts were characterized by using various analytical techniques to compare their physicochemical properties. The surface coke species of the deactivated catalysts were extracted by the Soxhlet extraction method and subsequently analyzed using GC–MS. Additionally, the pathways for by‐product formation were simulated through Gauss software. The results indicated that the so‐called coking deposits formed during the reaction predominantly consist of propylene glycol, ethers, and oligomers. These coke species covered the partial active sites on the catalyst surface, blocked the pores of the catalyst, and accordingly led to the deactivation of the catalyst, although the crystalline structure of the catalyst hardly changed after deactivation. These results provide a theoretical basis and novel insights for the rational design and development of efficient catalysts for the HPPO process.

Abstract:One-step epoxidation of propylene to propylene oxide (PO) in TS-1/H2O2 system is a promising green and sustainable formation route. However, the TS-1 catalyst is limited by the small pore channels and inadequate intrinsic reactivity. Herein, tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) is used to modify the TS-1 skeleton structures to improve the mass transfer and intrinsic reactivity. Comparative catalytic performance tests indicate that the optimized temperature for TPAOH treatment to modify TS-1 was 90 degrees C, and the achieved H(2)O2 utilization efficiency and the PO selectivity can be over 80%. Different TPAOH treatment temperatures significantly influenced the dissolution and recrystallization behavior of TS-1, which altered the composition and microstructure in terms of the pore volume and size, surface properties, and active sites. Our findings indicated that the enlarged pore channels for favorable mass transfer, improved hydrophobic surfaces, enriched framework titanium, and reduced acid strength of titanium silicalite zeolite should be the primary reasons for the enhanced conversion and yields.

Abstract:Titanium silicalite (TS-1) was successfully synthesized by using tetra-propylammonium bromide (TPABr) and n-butylamine as the template and the base, respectively. XRD, IR, SEM, 13C CP/MAS NMR, UV–VIS, and UV-Raman techniques were used to characterize the synthesized products. The results show that TS-1 has MFI structure with high crystallinity and large crystal size, and with two kinds of titanium species. Using epoxidation of propylene as the probe, the catalytic properties of TS-1 in the present work were investigated. The crystal size of TS-1 affects much the initial reaction rate of propylene oxide (PO) formation. The effects of reaction conditions on PO reveal that the PO formation is greatly influenced by the solvent and the solution pH value. Methanol is the most preferable solvent, and a portion of water (<30%) in solution does not have much impact on the reaction. Moreover, the addition of base used to neutralize the residual acidity of the catalyst favor the reaction, the catalyst shows high activity and selectivity upon the adequate amount of base and the catalyst can be used repeatedly without regeneration. In the fixed-bed reactor, using ammonium water as the neutralizer, after 200h of reaction, both the conversion and the utilization of H2O2 is about 95%, the selectivity of PO is about 90%.

Abstract:Hollow core-shell structured TS-1@S-1 zeolite (HCS-TS) was prepared successfully for the first time, which exhibited excellent activity in the epoxidation of alkenes. Combining TEM, UV-vis, UV-Raman, pyridine-IR, solid-state MAS NMR, XPS and so on characterization, the improvement in the catalytic performance of hollow core-shell structured TS-1@S-1 zeolite was credited to the newly formed superior active sites: defective Ti(OSi)3(OH) species in HCS-TS and six-coordinated titanium active species in uncalcined HCS-TS (HCS-TSP). Interestingly, these two different titanium active species in the samples could be constructed through calcination or not in the same synthesis process. A possible formation mechanism was investigated in detail; it indicated that the hollowing treatment of TS-1 in the first step was conducive to the construction of the new superior active sites in the samples, and there was a synergistic effect on the formation of these active sites between TPAOH and TEOS in the second step of the synthesis process. This strategy is feasible to enhance the catalytic performance of TS-1, and is suitable for the synthesis of TS-1 on an industrial scale.
Controllable synthesis of a large TS-1 catalyst for clean epoxidation of a C=C double bond under mild conditions

Abstract:Development of a titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) catalyst with good crystallinity and a four-coordinate Ti framework is critical for efficient catalytic oxidation reaction under mild conditions. Herein, a size-controlled TS-1 zeolite (TS-1#0.1ACh (acetylcholine)) was synthesized via steam-assisted crystallization by introducing acetylcholine as a crystal growth modifier in the preparation process, and TS-1#0.1ACh was also employed in epoxidations of different substrates containing C=C double bonds. The crystalline sizes of the as-synthesized TS-1#0.1ACh catalysts were controlled with the acetylcholine content, and characterization results showed that the particle sizes of highly crystalline TS-1#0.1ACh zeolite reached 3.0 μm with a good Ti framework. Throughout the synthetic process, the growth rate of the crystals was accelerated by electrostatic interactions between the connected hydroxyl groups of the acetylcholine modifier and the negatively charged skeleton of the pre-zeolites. Furthermore, the TS-1#0.1ACh catalyst demonstrated maximum catalytic activity, good selectivity and high stability during epoxidation of allyl chloride. Importantly, the TS-1#0.1ACh catalyst was also highly versatile and effective with different unsaturated substrates. These findings may provide novel, easily separable and large TS-1 catalysts for efficient and clean industrial epoxidations of C=C double bonds.

Abstract:Hollow silicalite-1@titanium silicalite-1 (H−S-1@TS-1) core-shell catalyst was synthesized in hydrothermal system with hollow silicalite-1 serving as core. In this novel method, tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) served as the single template in the whole synthesis process so as to avoid secondary structure directing agents (SDAs) that traditional methods applied to give core-shell TS-1. Since inner hollow structure was given by S-1, H−S-1@TS-1 avoided framework Ti leaching in coventional dissolution-recrystallization process that gave hollow TS-1 and thus it was in absence of extra-framework Ti. H−S-1@TS-1 showed better propene epoxidation activity (TOF=13.61 mol (mol h)−1) than microporous TS-1 (TOF=8.08 mol (mol h)−1) and micro-TS-1 post-treated with TPAOH solution (TOF=9.75 mol (mol h)−1) due to the synergy function of pure framework Ti species, higher surface Ti content and enhanced diffusion property.

Abstract:Amorphous Ti-MCM-41 with/without cetyltrimethylammonium template could be crystallized into TS-1 zeolite by way of solid state crystallization with steam assisted conversion (SAC) method. The crystallinity with changing textural property of the SAC crystallized product could be controlled by the composition of mesoporous material and SAC processing time. The partial crystallized zeolite (PCZ) material showed much better catalytic performance in epoxidation of unsaturated fatty acid ester than either Ti-MCM-41 or TS-1, which is attributed to synergistic effect of enhanced crystallinity and retention of mesopore in PCZ. The optimum reaction condition was to use TBHP oxidant in using ethylacetate and acetonitrile solvent superior to the H2O2 oxidant in protic solvent.

Abstract:The TS-1 microsphere was facilely prepared via a direct spray drying of the mixture containing the nanocrystal TS-1 and mother liquor. The calcined TS-1 zeolites possess a hollow structure and numerous intercrystalline mesopores, which may facilitate the diffusion properties. Au nanoparticles were loaded on TS-1 support by utilizing a deposition–precipitation process to prepare the Au/TS-1-M catalysts for propylene epoxidation in the presence of H 2 and O 2 conditions. The effects of the Ti and Au loadings on the structure, porosity, morphology, and catalytic performances of the Au/TS-1 catalysts have been investigated by various techniques. Under the optimized synthesis conditions (Si/Ti molar ratio = 57, 0.49 wt% Au), a propylene conversion of 6.1 % and a PO selectivity of 91.7 % were obtained on the Au/TS-1 catalyst. A PO formation rate of 186.8 g PO ·kg cat. −1 ·h −1 was achieved at the 20th hour.

Abstract:Developing an effective and low-cost system to synthesize titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) zeolite is desirable for a range of industrial applications. To date, the poor catalytic activity of the synthesized zeolite due to the low amount of framework titanium and large crystal size is the main obstacle limiting the widespread application of this material. Moreover, a large amount of wastewater is often produced by the existing synthesis process. Herein, a green and sustainable route for synthesizing small-crystal TS-1 with a high fraction of framework Ti was demonstrated via a seed-assisted method using a tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr)-ethanolamine hydrothermal system. The influence of the synthesis conditions on the physicochemical properties and catalytic activities of TS-1 was investigated. With the assistance of nanosized S-1 seeds, the incorporation of Ti into the framework of TS-1 was promoted, and the crystallization rate was effectively accelerated. After alkaline etching, the obtained hierarchical TS-1 had higher catalytic activity towards propylene epoxidation with an extremely high turnover frequency of 1,650 h −1 . Furthermore, the mother liquid during the hydrothermal reaction could be reused for the next synthesis procedure. Consequently, utilization ratios of both ethanolamine and TPABr exceeding 95% were achieved by recycling the mother liquid. This low-cost approach for reducing wastewater could be easily scaled up to provide a promising synthesis method for the industrial production of TS-1 and other topological zeolites.

Abstract:Uncalcined TS-1-immobilized Au bifunctional catalysts have been demonstrated to be highly active yet stable for the propylene epoxidation with H-2 and O-2. The objective of this study is to further engineer the surface properties of uncalcined TS-1 toward enhanced bifunctional catalysis. A strategy by increasing the reduction temperature is proposed to remove the residual TPA(+) template on the external surfaces, and the resultant Au/TS-1-B-300 catalyst gives rise to simultaneously enhanced activity, propylene oxide (PO) selectivity, and H-2 efficiency. These phenomena are explained by more exposed Ti-active sites and targeted catalysts' electronic properties based on high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, UV-vis, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. Furthermore, kinetics analysis demonstrates a much lower activation energy for the main reaction to form PO, suggesting the existence of an appropriate reaction temperature for the PO yield. The obtained insights could shed new light on rationally designing and optimizing the catalysts by engineering the surface properties.

Abstract:Epoxides are high‐valued intermediates in the production of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, perfumes, and polymers. Given the growing demand for epoxides, it is imperative to develop more environmentally friendly and sustainable routes instead of the chlorohydrin process. Notably, the direct utilization of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for the epoxidation reaction presents significant advantages from both environmental and economic perspectives. The review provides insights into both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts employed in the 1‐butene epoxidation using the green oxidant H2O2. Among the diverse range of catalysts, titanosilicate‐1 (TS‐1) has garnered extensive attention due to its exceptional selectivity and high oxygen atom utilization. The aim of this review is to illustrate various strategies for TS‐1 catalysts preparation that can lead to more versatile, higher‐performance, and greener epoxidation processes. Additionally, various potential approaches to enhance the catalyst performance of TS‐1 are highlighted, including (i) constructing specific coordination modes of Ti sites, (ii) regulating the microenvironment around Ti sites, and (iii) improving the accessibility of Ti sites. Furthermore, advances in molding TS‐1 catalysts are also introduced from the perspective of the industrialization. Finally, future research directions are discussed with emphasis on the application scope of TS‐1 to gain deeper insights into epoxidation process.
