Abstract:The interpolation-based decoding that was developed for general evaluation AG codes is shown to be equally applicable to general differential AG codes. A performance analysis of the decoding algorithm, which is parallel to that of its companion algorithm, is reported. In particular, the decoding capacities of evaluation AG codes and differential AG codes are seen to be nicely interrelated. As an interesting special case, a decoding algorithm for classical Goppa codes is presented.

Abstract:In this work we study evaluation codes defined on the points of a subset of an affine space over a finite field, whose vanishing ideal admits a Gröbner basis of a certain type, which occurs for subsets considered in several well-known examples of evaluation codes, like Reed-Solomon codes, Reed-Muller codes and affine cartesian codes. We determine properties of the polynomials in this basis which allow the determination of the footprint of the vanishing ideal and the explicit construction of indicator functions for the points of . We then consider generalized monomial evaluation codes and find information on their duals, and the dimension of their hulls. We present several examples of applications of the results we found.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate two-point Algebraic Geometry codes associated to the Skabelund maximal curve constructed as a cyclic cover of the Suzuki curve. In order to estimate the minimum distance of such codes, we make use of the generalized order bound introduced by P. Beelen and determine certain two-point Weierstrass semigroups of the curve.

Abstract:In this paper, Algebraic-Geometric (AG) codes and quantum codes associated to a family of curves which comprises the famous Suzuki curve are investigated. The Weierstrass semigroup at some rational point is computed. Notably, each curve in the family turn out to be a Castle curve over some finite field, and a weak Castle curve over its extensions. This is a relevant feature when codes constructed from the curve are considered.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a family of codes that can be used in a McEliece cryptosystem, called Goppa--like AG codes. These codes generalize classical Goppa codes and can be constructed from any curve of genus $\mathfrak{g} \geq 0$. Focusing on codes from $C_{a,b}$ curves, we study the behaviour of the dimension of the square of their dual to determine their resistance to distinguisher attacks similar to the one for alternant and Goppa codes developed by Mora and Tillich. We also propose numerical experiments to measure how sharp is our bound.

Abstract:In 1998 Hoholdt, van Lint and Pellikaan introduced the concept of a ``weight function'' defined on a F_q-algebra and used it to construct linear codes, obtaining among them the algebraic-geometric (AG) codes supported on one point. Later it was proved by Matsumoto that all codes produced using a weight function are actually AG codes supported on one point. Recently, ``near weight functions'' (a generalization of weight functions), also defined on a F_q-algebra, were introduced to study codes supported on two points. In this paper we show that an algebra admits a set of m near weight functions having a compatibility property, namely, the set is a ``complete set'', if and only if it is the ring of regular functions of an affine geometrically irreducible algebraic curve defined over F_q whose points at infinity have a total of m rational branches. Then the codes produced using the near weight functions are exactly the AG codes supported on m points. A formula for the minimum distance of these codes is presented with examples which show that in some situations it compares better than the usual Goppa bound.

List-decoding of AG codes without genus penalty

Abstract:In this paper we consider algebraic geometry (AG) codes: a class of codes constructed from algebraic codes (equivalently, using function fields) by Goppa. These codes can be list-decoded using the famous Guruswami-Sudan (GS) list-decoder, but the genus $g$ of the used function field gives rise to negative term in the decoding radius, which we call the genus penalty. In this article, we present a GS-like list-decoding algorithm for arbitrary AG codes, which we call the \emph{inseparable GS list-decoder}. Apart from the multiplicity parameter $s$ and designed list size $\ell$, common for the GS list-decoder, we introduce an inseparability exponent $e$. Choosing this exponent to be positive gives rise to a list-decoder for which the genus penalty is reduced with a factor $1/p^e$ compared to the usual GS list-decoder. Here $p$ is the characteristic. Our list-decoder can be executed in $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(s\ell^{\omega}\mu^{\omega-1}p^e(n+g))$ field operations, where $n$ is the code length.

On Galois self-orthogonal algebraic geometry codes

Abstract:Galois self-orthogonal (SO) codes are generalizations of Euclidean and Hermitian SO codes. Algebraic geometry (AG) codes are the first known class of linear codes exceeding the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. Both of them have attracted much attention for their rich algebraic structures and wide applications in these years. In this paper, we consider them together and study Galois SO AG codes. A criterion for an AG code being Galois SO is presented. Based on this criterion, we construct several new classes of maximum distance separable (MDS) Galois SO AG codes from projective lines and several new classes of Galois SO AG codes from projective elliptic curves, hyper-elliptic curves and hermitian curves. In addition, we give an embedding method that allows us to obtain more MDS Galois SO codes from known MDS Galois SO AG codes.

Introducing locality in some generalized AG codes

Abstract:In 1999, Xing, Niederreiter and Lam introduced a generalization of AG codes using the evaluation at non-rational places of a function field. In this paper, we show that one can obtain a locality parameter $r$ in such codes by using only non-rational places of degrees at most $r$. This is, up to the author's knowledge, a new way to construct locally recoverable codes (LRCs). We give an example of such a code reaching the Singleton-like bound for LRCs, and show the parameters obtained for some longer codes over $\mathbb F_3$. We then investigate similarities with certain concatenated codes. Contrary to previous methods, our construction allows one to obtain directly codes whose dimension is not a multiple of the locality. Finally, we give an asymptotic study using the Garcia-Stichtenoth tower of function fields, for both our construction and a construction of concatenated codes. We give explicit infinite families of LRCs with locality 2 over any finite field of cardinality greater than 3 following our new approach.

Abstract:It is proved that any algebraic-geometric (AG) code can be expressed as a cross section of an extended multidimensional cyclic code. Both AG codes and multidimensional cyclic codes are described by a unified theory of linear block codes defined over point sets: AG codes are defined over the points of an algebraic curve, and an m-dimensional cyclic code is defined over the points in m-dimensional space. The power of the unified theory is in its description of decoding techniques using Grobner bases. In order to fit an AG code into this theory, a change of coordinates must be applied to the curve over which the code is defined so that the curve is in special position. For curves in special position, all computations can be performed with polynomials and this also makes it possible to use the theory of Grobner bases. Next, a transform is defined for AG codes which generalizes the discrete Fourier transform. The transform is also related to a Grobner basis, and is useful in setting up the decoding problem. In the decoding problem, a key step is finding a Grobner basis for an error locator ideal. For AG codes, multidimensional cyclic codes, and indeed, any cross section of an extended multidimensional cyclic code, Sakata's algorithm can be used to find linear recursion relations which hold on the syndrome array. In this general context, the authors give a self-contained and simplified presentation of Sakata's algorithm, and present a general framework for decoding algorithms for this family of codes, in which the use of Sakata's algorithm is supplemented by a procedure for extending the syndrome array.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce a class of generalized matrix algebras, in which each algebra is called a normally upper triangular gm algebra, and characterise Gorenstein projective modules over this class of algebras. Moreover, a sufficient condition of strongly Gorenstein projective modules over normally upper triangular gm algebras is given. The importance of normally upper triangular gm algebras for us is that it includes the so-called path algebras of quivers over algebras and generalized path algebras. Due to this, we characterize Gorenstein projective modules and strongly Gorenstein projective modules over path algebras of quivers over algebras and generalized path algebras as applications of the main results on normally upper triangular gm algebras. At last, we give an example to show how all indecomposable Gorenstein projective modules over a given algebra are constructed by the result on generalized path algebras.

Abstract:Based on curves over finite fields with many rational points, we present two constructions of linear codes from local expansions of functions at a fixed rational point. It turns out that codes from our constructions have the same bound on their parameters as Goppa's (1981) geometry codes. Furthermore, we prove that our second construction is equivalent to Goppa's construction. Finally, an additional construction of linear codes from maximal curves shows that these codes have better parameters than Goppa's geometry codes from maximal curves for a certain interval of parameters.
Algebraic Geometry Codes for Distributed Matrix Multiplication Using Local Expansions

Abstract:Code-based Distributed Matrix Multiplication (DMM) has been extensively studied in distributed computing for efficiently performing large-scale matrix multiplication using coding theoretic techniques. The communication cost and recovery threshold (i.e., the least number of successful worker nodes required to recover the product of two matrices) are two major challenges in coded DMM research. Several constructions based on Reed-Solomon (RS) codes are known, including Polynomial codes, MatDot codes, and PolyDot codes. However, these RS-based schemes are not efficient for small finite fields because the distributed order (i.e., the total number of worker nodes) is limited by the size of the underlying finite field. Algebraic geometry (AG) codes can have a code length exceeding the size of the finite field, which helps solve this problem. Some work has been done to generalize Polynomial and MatDot codes to AG codes, but the generalization of PolyDot codes to AGcodes still remains an open problem as far as we know. This is because functions of an algebraic curve do not behave as nicely as polynomials. In this work, by using local expansions of functions, we are able to generalize the three DMM schemes based on RS codes to AG codes. Specifically, we provide a construction of AG-based PolyDot codes for the first time. In addition, our AG-based Polynomial and MatDot codes achieve better recovery thresholds compared to previous AG-based DMM schemes while maintaining similar communication costs. Our constructions are based on a novel basis of the Riemann-Roch space using local expansions, which naturally generalizes the standard monomial basis of the univariate polynomial space in RS codes. In contrast, previous work used the non-gap numbers to construct a basis of the Riemann-Roch space, which can cause cancellation problems that prevent the conditions of PolyDot codes from being satisfied.

Abstract:Code equivalence is a basic concept in coding theory. The well-known theorem by MacWilliams gives a sufficient condition for code equivalence. Recently the MacWilliams theorem has been generalized, by Fan, Liu and Puig, making use of the generalized Hamming weights (GHWs). In this paper, we will present a further generalization of the MacWilliams theorem. Our result extends both the MacWilliams theorem and the result by Fan, Liu and Puig. We will first define ''relative subcodes'' of a linear code, based on the relative generalized Hamming weights (RGHWs) which is a generalization of the GHWs; and then establish a method based on finite projective geometry to characterize relative subcodes. Using this method, we will prove our main result.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of nonlinear algebraic-geometry codes based on evaluation of functions on infinitely near points. Let X be an algebraic variety over the finite field F-q. An infinitely near point of order mu is a point P on a variety X' obtained by mu iterated blowing-ups starting from X. Given such a point P and a function f on X, we give a definition of f(P) which is nonlinear in f (unless mu = 0). Given a set S of infinitely near points {P-1, . . . , P-n}, we associate to f its set of values (f(P-1), . . . , f(P-n)) in F-q(n). Let V be a k dimensional vector space of functions on X. Evaluation of functions in V at the n points of S gives a map V -> F-q(n), which we view as an (n, q(k), d) code when the map is injective. Here d is the largest integer such that a function in V is uniquely determined by its values on any n - d + 1 points of S. These codes generalize the Reed-Solomon codes, but unlike the R-S codes they can be constructed to have arbitrarily large code length n. The first nontrivial case is where X = A(Fq)(2), affine 2-space, and we study this case in detail.
Computation of Grobner basis for systematic encoding of generalized quasi-cyclic codes

Abstract:Generalized quasi-cyclic (GQC) codes form a wide and useful class of linear codes that includes thoroughly quasi-cyclic codes, finite geometry (FG) low density parity check (LDPC) codes, and Hermitian codes. Although it is known that the systematic encoding of GQC codes is equivalent to the division algorithm in the theory of Grobner basis of modules, there has been no algorithm that computes Grobner basis for all types of GQC codes. In this paper, we propose two algorithms to compute Grobner basis for GQC codes from their parity check matrices: echelon canonical form algorithm and transpose algorithm. Both algorithms require sufficiently small number of finite-field operations with the order of the third power of code-length. Each algorithm has its own characteristic; the first algorithm is composed of elementary methods, and the second algorithm is based on a novel formula and is faster than the first one for high-rate codes. Moreover, we show that a serial-in serial-out encoder architecture for FG LDPC codes is composed of linear feedback shift registers with the size of the linear order of code-length; to encode a binary codeword of length n, it takes less than 2n adder and 2n memory elements. On Decoding of Generalized Concatenated Codes and Matrix-Product Codes

Abstract:Generalized concatenated codes were introduced in the 1970s by Zinoviev. There are many types of codes in the literature that are known by other names that can be viewed as generalized concatenated codes. Examples include matrix-product codes, multilevel codes and generalized cascade codes. Decoding algorithms for generalized concatenated codes were developed during the 1970s and 1980s. However, their use does not appear to be as widespread as it should, especially for codes that are known by other names but can be viewed as generalized concatenated codes. In this paper we review the decoding algorithms for concatenated codes, generalized concatenated codes and matrix-product codes, and clarify the connection between matrix-product codes and generalized concatenated codes. We present a small improvement to the decoding algorithm for concatenated codes. We also extend the decoding algorithms from errors-only decoders to error-and-erasure decoders. Furthermore, we improve the upper bound on the computational complexity of the decoding algorithm in the case of matrix-product codes where the generator matrix for the inner code is non-singular by columns.

Abstract:In recent years, linear complementary pairs (LCP) of codes and linear complementary dual (LCD) codes have gained significant attention due to their applications in coding theory and cryptography. In this work, we construct explicit LCPs of codes and LCD codes from function fields of genus $g \geq 1$. To accomplish this, we present pairs of suitable divisors giving rise to non-special divisors of degree $g-1$ in the function field. The results are applied in constructing LCPs of algebraic geometry codes and LCD algebraic geometry (AG) codes in Kummer extensions, hyperelliptic function fields, and elliptic curves.

Abstract:Universal coding of integers (UCI) is a class of variable-length code, such that the ratio of the expected codeword length to $\max\{1, H( P)\}$ is within a constant factor, where H(P) is the Shannon entropy of the decreasing probability distribution P. However, if we consider the ratio of the expected codeword length to H(P), the ratio tends to infinity by using UCI, when H(P) tends to zero. To solve this issue, this paper introduces a class of codes, termed generalized UCI, such that the ratio of the expected codeword length to H(P) is within a constant factor K. The definition of generalized UCI is proposed, and then the coding structure of generalized UCI is introduced. Finally, the asymptotically optimal generalized UCI is presented.

Abstract:Generalized Reed-Solomon and extended generalized Reed-Solomon (abbreviation to GRS and EGRS) codes are the most well-known family of MDS codes with wide applications in coding theory and practice. Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the $q$ elements finite field, where $q$ is the power of a prime. For a linear code $\mathcal{C}$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with length $2\le n\le q$, we prove that $\mathcal{C}$ is a GRS code if and only if $\mathcal{C}$ is a EGRS code.
