Abstract:A coadjoint nilpotent orbit [inline-graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="01i" /] of a complex semisimple Lie group G is said to be spherical if it contains an open orbit of a Borel subgroup. We determine when and how to attach unitary representations to such an orbit for the real orthogonal and symplectic groups. Our results actually extend to a larger class of nilpotent coadjoint orbits.

Abstract:Let $mathbf G$ be a complex orthogonal or complex symplectic group, and let $G$ be a real form of $mathbf G$, namely $G$ is a real orthogonal group, a real symplectic group, a quaternionic orthogonal group, or a quaternionic symplectic group. For a fixed parity $mathbb pin mathbb Z/2mathbb Z$, we define a set $mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$ of nilpotent $mathbf G$-orbits $mathfrak g$ (the Lie algebra of $mathbf G$). When $mathbb p$ is the parity of the dimension of the standard module of $mathbf G$, this is the set of the stably trivial special nilpotent orbits, which includes all rigid special nilpotent orbits. For each $mathcal O in mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$, we construct all unipotent representations of $G$ (or its metaplectic cover when $G$ is a real symplectic group and $mathbb p$ is odd) attached to $mathcal O$ via the method of theta lifting and show particular that they are unitary.

Abstract:We show that the enumeration of linear orbits and conjugacy classes of $\mathbf{Z}$-defined unipotent groups over finite fields is "wild" in the following sense: given an arbitrary scheme $Y$ of finite type over $\mathbf{Z}$ and integer $n\geqslant 1$, the numbers $\# Y(\mathbf{F}_q) \bmod q^n$ can be expressed, uniformly in $q$, in terms of the numbers of linear orbits (or numbers of conjugacy classes) of finitely many $\mathbf{Z}$-defined unipotent groups over $\mathbf{F}_q$ and finitely many Laurent polynomials in $q$.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a new characterization of the distinguished unipotent orbits of a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. For classical groups we prove the characterization by a combinatorial computation, and for exceptional groups we check it with a computer. This characterization is needed in the theory of cuspidal sheaves on the stack of L-parameters in forthcoming work of the first two named authors.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical Lie groups GL(n+1)(R), GL(n+1)(C), U(p, q + 1), O(p, q + 1), On+1(C), SO(p, q + 1), SOn+1(C), and let G' be respectively the subgroup GL(n)(R), GL(n)(C), U(p, q), O(p, q), O-n(C), SO(p, q), SO (C), embedded in G in the standard way. We show that every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G' occurs with multiplicity at most one in every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G. Abstract:The problem of classifying tuples of nilpotent matrices over a field under simultaneous conjugation is considered "hopeless". However, for any given matrix order over a finite field, the number of concerned orbits is always finite. This paper gives a closed formula for the number of absolutely indecomposable orbits using the same methodology as Hua [5]; those orbits are non-splittable over field extensions. As a consequence, those numbers are always polynomials in the cardinality of the base field with integral coefficients. It is conjectured that those coefficients are always non-negative.

Abstract:In the paper the foundation of the $k$-orbit theory is developed. The theory opens a new simple way to the investigation of groups and multidimensional symmetries. The relations between combinatorial symmetry properties of a $k$-orbit and its automorphism group are found. It is found the local property of a $k$-orbit. The difference between 2-closed group and $m$-closed group for $m>2$ is discovered. It is explained the specific property of Petersen graph automorphism group $n$-orbit. It is shown that any non-trivial primitive group contains a transitive imprimitive subgroup and as a result it is proved that the automorphism group of a vertex transitive graph (2-closed group) contains a regular element (polycirculant conjecture). Using methods of the $k$-orbit theory, it is considered different possibilities of permutation representation of a finite group and shown that the most informative, relative to describing of the structure of a finite group, is the permutation representation of the lowest degree. Using this representation it is obtained a simple proof of the W. Feit, J.G. Thompson theorem: Solvability of groups of odd order. It is described the enough simple structure of lowest degree representation of finite groups and found a way to constructing of the simple full invariant of a finite group. To the end, using methods of $k$-orbit theory, it is obtained one of possible polynomial solutions of the graph isomorphism problem.

Enumerating Finite Braid Group Orbits on $SL_2(\C)$-Character Varieties

Abstract:We analyze finite orbits of the natural braid group action on the character variety of the $n$ times punctured sphere. Building on recent results relating middle convolution and finite complex reflection groups, our work implements Katz's middle convolution to explicitly classify finite orbits in the $SL_2(\C)$-character variety of the punctured sphere. We provide theoretical results on the existence of finite orbits arising from the imprimitive finite complex reflection groups and formulas for constructing such examples when they exist. In the primitive finite complex reflection groups, we perform an exhaustive search and provide computational results. Our contributions also include Magma computer code for middle convolution and for computing the orbit under this action when it is known to be finite.

Abstract:Let G be a real, connected, noncompact, semisimple Lie group, let K be a maximal compact subgroup of G, and let g=k+p be the corresponding Cartan decomposition of the complexified Lie algebra of G. Sequences of strongly orthogonal noncompact weights are constructed and classified for each real noncompact simple Lie group of classical type. We show that for each partial subsequence there is a corresponding family of K_C-orbits, ordered by inclusion and such that the representation of K on the ring of regular functions on the closure of the orbit is multiplicity-free. The K-types of regular functions on the orbits and the regular functions on their closures are both explicitly identified and demonstrated to coincide, with one exception in the Hermitian symmetric case. The classification presented also includes the specification of a base point for each orbit and exhibits a corresponding system of restricted roots with multiplicities. A formula for the leading term of the Hilbert polynomials corresponding to these orbits is given. This formula, together with the restricted root data, allows the determination of the dimensions of these orbits and the algebraic-geometric degree of their closures. In an appendix, the location of these orbits within D. King's classification of spherical nilpotent orbits in complex symmetric spaces is depicted via signed partitions and Hasse diagrams.

Abstract:The paper develops applications of symmetric orbit functions, known from irreducible representations of simple Lie groups, in numerical analysis. It is shown that these functions have remarkable properties which yield to cubature formulas, approximating a weighted integral of any function by a weighted finite sum of function values, in connection with any simple Lie group. The cubature formulas are specialized for simple Lie groups of rank two. An optimal approximation of any function by multivariate polynomials arising from symmetric orbit functions is discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide some formulae to calculate orbital characters. Especially we give a lifting theorem by which one can read off the value of orbital characters from local subgroups. With orbital characters, we can show that Reynolds ideal is dual to the vector space of simple modules and this leads to a new method to count simple modules. We also give a natural morphism from local to general vector space of simple modules and determine it completely. Some other applications to modular representation are also included.

Abstract:Orbit functions of a simple Lie group/Lie algebra L consist of exponential functions summed up over the Weyl group of L. They are labeled by the highest weights of irreducible finite dimensional representations of L. They are of three types: C-, S- and E-functions. Orbit functions of the Lie algebras An, or equivalently, of the Lie group SU(n+1), are considered. First, orbit functions in two different bases - one orthonormal, the other given by the simple roots of SU(n) - are written using the isomorphism of the permutation group of n elements and the Weyl group of SU(n). Secondly, it is demonstrated that there is a one-to-one correspondence between classical Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kind, and C- and $S$-functions of the simple Lie group SU(2). It is then shown that the well-known orbit functions of SU(n) are straightforward generalizations of Chebyshev polynomials to n-1 variables. Properties of the orbit functions provide a wealth of properties of the polynomials. Finally, multivariate exponential functions are considered, and their connection with orbit functions of SU(n) is established.

Abstract:In this paper, we study multi-rotation orbits on the unit circle. We obtain a natural generalization of a classical result which says that orbits of irrational rotations on the unit circle are dense. It is possible to show that this result holds true if instead of iterating a single irrational rotation, one takes a multi-rotation orbit along a finitely recurrent sequence over finitely many different irrational rotations. We also discuss some connections between the box dimensions of multi-rotation orbits and Diophantine approximations. In particular, we improve a result by Feng and Xiong in the case when the rotation parameters are algebraic numbers.

Effective equidistribution of orbits under semisimple groups on congruence quotients

Abstract:We prove an effective equidistribution result for periodic orbits of semisimple groups on congruence quotients of an ambient semisimple group. This extends previous work of Einsiedler, Margulis and Venkatesh. The main new feature is that we allow for periodic orbits of semisimple groups with nontrivial centralizer in the ambient group. Our proof uses crucially an effective closing lemma from work with Lindenstrauss, Margulis, Mohammadi, and Shah.

Abstract:Motivated by relating the representation theory of the split real and $p$-adic forms of a connected reductive algebraic group $G$, we describe a subset of $2^r$ orbits on the complex flag variety for a certain symmetric subgroup. (Here $r$ is the semisimple rank of $G$.) This set of orbits has the property that, while the closure of individual orbits are generally singular, they are always smooth along other orbits in the set. This, in turn, implies consequences for the representation theory of the split real group.
