Abstract:Hydrodynamical noise is introduced on top of Gubser's analytical solution to viscous hydrodynamics. With respect to the ultra-central collision events of Pb-Pb, p-Pb and p-p at the LHC energies, we solve the evolution of noisy fluid systems and calculate the radial flow velocity correlations. We show that the absolute amplitude of the hydrodynamical noise is determined by the multiplicity of the collision event. The evolution of azimuthal anisotropies, which is related to the generation of harmonic flow, receives finite enhancements from hydrodynamical noise. Although it is strongest in the p-p systems, the effect of hydrodynamical noise on flow harmonics is found to be negligible, especially in the ultra-central Pb-Pb collisions. For the short-range correlations, hydrodynamical noise contributes to the formation of a near-side peak on top of the correlation structure originated from initial state fluctuations. The shape of the peak is affected by the strength of hydrodynamical noise, whose height and width grow from the Pb-Pb system to the p-Pb and p-p systems.

Abstract:We study the propagation and diffusion of electric charge fluctuations in the Bjorken hydrodynamic model with both white and Catteneo noise using purely numerical methods. We show that a global lattice of noise fluctuations is required to fully calculate the two-point correlators of charge. We solve the stochastic differential equations that arise from the charge conservation equation on the lattice. We explicitly identify the self-correlation term in the case of Catteneo noise and provide a physical interpretation. We provide a numerical recipe to remove this contribution from the full two-point correlators. Finally, we calculate the balance functions for charged hadrons. By limiting the speed of signal propagation, we observe the expected narrowing of the balance functions after removing the self-correlations.

Abstract:Multiplicity fluctuations are one of the most crucial observables in the Beam Energy Scan program of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. It is understood that they can be utilized to probe the whereabouts of the critical point on the phase diagram of the QCD matter. However, a significant portion of these fluctuations is, apart from that related to the QCD phase transition, attributed to the other origins, which we refer to as "noncritical" ones. The present study is dedicated to the noncritical aspects of the multiplicity fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions. In particular, we focus on those of dynamical origin, such as the hydrodynamic expansion of the system and the event-by-event initial fluctuations, in addition to the usual thermal fluctuations, finite volume corrections, and resonance decay at the freeze-out surface. The obtained results are compared to those of the hadronic resonance gas model as well as to the experimental data.

Abstract:We study the evolution of hydrodynamic and non-hydrodynamic moments of the distribution function using anisotropic and third-order Chapman-Enskog hydrodynamics for systems undergoing Bjorken and Gubser flows. The hydrodynamic results are compared with the exact solution of the Boltzmann equation with a collision term in relaxation time approximation. While the evolution of the hydrodynamic moments of the distribution function (i.e. of the energy momentum tensor) can be described with high accuracy by both hydrodynamic approximation schemes, their description of the evolution of the entropy of the system is much less precise. We attribute this to large contributions from non-hydrodynamic modes coupling into the entropy evolution which are not well captured by the hydrodynamic approximations. The differences between the exact solution and the hydrodynamic approximations are larger for the third-order Chapman-Enskog hydrodynamics than for anisotropic hydrodynamics, which effectively resums some of the dissipative effects from anisotropic expansion to all orders in the anisotropy, and are larger for Gubser flow than for Bjorken flow. Overall, anisotropic hydrodynamics provides the most precise macroscopic description for these highly anisotropically expanding systems.

Abstract:Event-by-event hydrodynamics, with fluctuating initial conditions, has shown to nicely reproduce several features of experimentally observed quantities in high-energy nuclear collisions. Here we discuss how it may help to understand, in a unified way, the various structures observed in the long-range two-particle correlations, both in nucleus-nucleus and p-p collisions. Suggestions of how experimentally this description could be tested are also discussed.

Abstract:We evaluate the full opacity dependence of collective flow in high-energy heavy-ion collisions within a microscopic kinetic description based on the Boltzmann equation in the conformal relaxation time approximation. By comparing kinetic theory calculations to hydrodynamic and hybrid simulations for an average initial state, we point out shortcomings and inaccuracies of hydrodynamic models and present modified simulation setups to improve them.

Hydrodynamic flow amplitude correlations in event-by-event fluctuating heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:The effects of event-by-event fluctuations in the initial geometry of the colliding nuclei are important in the analysis of final flow observables in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We use hydrodynamic simulations to study the amplitude correlations between different orders of event-by-event fluctuating anisotropic flow harmonics. While the general trends seen in the experimental data are qualitatively reproduced by the model, deviations in detail, in particular for peripheral collisions, point to the need for more elaborate future calculations with a hybrid approach that describes the late hadronic stage of the evolution microscopically. It is demonstrated explicitly that the observed anti-correlation between $v_2$ and $v_3$ is the consequence of approximately linear hydrodynamic response to a similar anti-correlation of the corresponding initial eccentricities $\epsilon_2$ and $\epsilon_3$. For $n{\,>\,}3$, the hydrodynamic correlations between $v_{2,3}$ and $v_n$ deviate from the rescaled correlations among the corresponding initial eccentricities, demonstrating nonlinear mode coupling effect in higher order flows.

Hydrodynamics of a hard-core non-polar active lattice gas

Abstract:We present a fluctuating hydrodynamic description of a non-polar active lattice gas model with excluded volume interactions that exhibits motility-induced phase separation under appropriate conditions. For quasi-one dimension and higher, stability analysis of the noiseless hydrodynamics gives quantitative bounds on the phase boundary of the motility-induced phase separation in terms of spinodal and binodal. Inclusion of the multiplicative noise in the fluctuating hydrodynamics describes the exponentially decaying two-point correlations in the stationary-state homogeneous phase. Our hydrodynamic description and theoretical predictions based on it are in excellent agreement with our Monte-Carlo simulations and pseudo-spectral iteration of the hydrodynamics equations. Our construction of hydrodynamics for this model is not suitable in strictly one-dimension with single-file constraints, and we argue that this breakdown is associated with micro-phase separation.

On Hydrodynamic Correlations in Low-Dimensional Interacting Systems

Abstract:Low-dimensional systems are an important field of current theoretical and experimental research. Recent technological developments provide many possible realizations of effectively one-dimensional systems. These devices promise to give us access to a new range of phenomena. It is therefore very interesting to develop theoretical methods specific for such systems to model their behavior and calculate the correlators of the resulting theory. Incidentally, one such method exists and is known as Bosonization. It can be applied to one-dimensional systems and effectively describes low energy excitations in a universal way. We use the example of a correlator known as the Emptiness Formation Probability to show that Bosonization fails to describe some long range correlators corresponding to large disturbances (the EFP measures the probability for the ground state of the system to develop a region without particles). We trace this failure to the fact that Bosonization is constructed as a linear approximation of the full theory and we set up to develop a collective description with the required non-linearity. The resulting scheme is essentially a Hydrodynamic paradigm for quantum systems. We show how to construct such a hydrodynamic description for a variety of exactly integrable models and illustrate how it can be used to make new predictions. For the special case of the spin-1/2 XY model we take advantage of the structure of the model to express the EFP as a determinant of a very special type of matrix, known as Toeplitz Matrix. We use the theory of Toeplitz determinants to calculate the asymptotic behavior of the EFP in the XY model and discuss its relation with the criticality of the theory.

Abstract:Recent measurements at the LHC involve the correlation of different azimuthal flow harmonics $v_n$. These new observables add constraints to theoretical models and probe aspects of the system that are independent of the traditional single-harmonic measurements such as 2- and multi-particle cumulants $v_n\{m\}$. Many of these new observables have not yet been measured at RHIC, leaving an opportunity to make predictions as a test of models across energies. We make predictions using NeXSPheRIO, a hydrodynamical model which has accurately reproduced a large set of single-harmonic correlations in a large range of transverse momenta and centralities at RHIC. Our predictions thus provide an important baseline for comparison to correlations of flow harmonics, which contain non-trivial information about the initial state as well as QGP transport properties. We also point out significant biases that can appear when using wide centrality bins and non-trivial event weighting, necessitating care in performing experimental analyses and in comparing theoretical calculations to these measurements.

Abstract:Thermal fluctuations affect the dynamics of systems near critical points, the evolution of the early universe, and two-particle correlations in heavy-ion collisions. For the latter, numerical simulations of nearly-ideal, relativistic fluids are necessary. The correlation functions of noise in relativistic fluids are calculated, stochastic integration of the noise in 3+1-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics is implemented, and the effect of noise on observables in heavy-ion collisions is discussed. Thermal fluctuations will cause significant variance in the event-by-event distributions of integrated v2 while changing average values even when using the same initial conditions, suggesting that including thermal noise will lead to refitting of the hydrodynamical parameters with implications for understanding the physics of hot QCD.

Rough neutron fields and nuclear reactor noise

Abstract:Nuclear reactor cores achieve sustained fission chain reactions through the so-called 'critical state' -a subtle equilibrium between their material properties and their geometries. Observed at macroscopic scales during operations, the resulting stationary neutron field is tainted by a noise term, that hinders various fluctuations occurring at smaller scales. These fluctuations are either of a stochastic nature (whenever the core is operated at low power) or related to various perturbations and vibrations within the core, even operated in its power regime. For reasons that are only partially understood using linear noise theory, incidental events have been reported, characterized by an increase of the power noise. Such events of power noise growth, sometimes up to seemingly unbounded levels, have already led in the past to volontary scramming of reactors. In this paper, we will extend the findings of \cite{percolation_pre} (where a statistical field theory of critical processes was employed to model stochastic neutron noise) by incorporating the effects of power noise. We will show that the evolution of the neutron field in a reactor is intimately connected to the dynamic of surface growths given by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. Recent numerical results emerging from renormalization group approaches will be used to calculate a threshold in the amplitude of the reactor noise above which the core could enter a new criticality state, and to estimate the critical exponents characterizing this phase transition to rough neutron fields. The phenomenology of this roughening transition will be correlated and compared to data of misunderstood reactor noise levels and reactor instabilities, and will be shown to provide both qualitative and quantitative insights into this long-standing issue of reactor physics.

Abstract:We explore the phase diagram of SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory with dynamical fermions in the temperature, mass, chemical potential space. We observe qualitative changes of the dependence of the particle density on $\mu$ and $T$, which is compatible with that expected of a gas of free massless quarks $n \propto \mu^3$ only for $T \simeq T_c$. At the onset for thermodynamics the interquark potential flattens at large separations, indicating enhanced fermion screening and the transition to a deconfined phase. Temporal and spatial Polyakov loops behave in different ways, the latter being nearly insensitive to the chemical potential. The rotation of the chiral condensate to a baryonic condensate, as inferred from the susceptibilities, might occur together with a reduction of its magnitude in the chiral limit, possibly leading to a critical temperature for diquark condensation smaller than the deconfinement temperature. We further asses the rôle of the chemical potential into the gauge dynamics by carrying out a partial quenched calculation. We speculate on the relevance, or lack thereof, of our findings to real QCD.

Correlation functions of the Bjorken flow in the holographic Schwinger-Keldysh approach

Abstract:One of the outstanding problems in the holographic approach to many-body physics is the explicit computation of correlation functions in nonequilibrium states. We provide a new and simple proof that the horizon cap prescription of Crossley-Glorioso-Liu for implementing the thermal Schwinger-Keldysh contour in the bulk is consistent with the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger periodicity and the ingoing boundary condition for the retarded propagator at any arbitrary frequency and momentum. The generalization to the hydrodynamic Bjorken flow is achieved by a Weyl rescaling in which the dual black hole's event horizon attains a constant surface gravity and area at late time although the directions longitudinal and transverse to the flow expands and contract respectively. The dual state's temperature and entropy density thus become constants (instead of the perfect fluid expansion) although no time-translation symmetry emerges at late time. Undoing the Weyl rescaling, the correlation functions can be computed systematically in a large proper time expansion in inverse powers of the average of the two reparametrized proper time arguments. The horizon cap has to be pinned to the nonequilibrium event horizon so that regularity and consistency conditions are satisfied. Consequently, in the limit of perfect fluid expansion, the Schwinger-Keldysh correlation functions with space-time reparametrized arguments are simply thermal at an appropriate temperature. A generalized bilocal thermal structure holds to all orders. We argue that the Stokes data (which are functions rather than constants) for the hydrodynamic correlation functions can decode the quantum fluctuations behind the horizon cap pinned to the evolving event horizon, and thus the initial data.

Exploring theoretical uncertainties in the hydrodynamic description of relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:We explore theoretical uncertainties in the hydrodynamic description of relativistic heavy-ion collisions by examining the full non-linear causality conditions and quantifying the second-order transport coefficients' role on flow observables. The causality conditions impose physical constraints on the maximum allowed values of inverse Reynolds numbers during the hydrodynamic evolution. Including additional second-order gradient terms in the Denicol-Niemi-Molnár-Rischke (DNMR) theory significantly shrinks the casual regions compared to those in the Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics. For Au+Au collisions, we find the variations of flow observables are small with and without imposing the necessary causality conditions, suggesting a robust extraction of the Quark-Gluon Plasma's transport coefficients in previous model-to-data comparisons. However, sizable sensitivity is present in small p+Au collisions, which poses challenges to study the small systems' collectivity.

Abstract:Using the recently developed ``Maximum Entropy'' (or ``least biased'') distribution function to truncate the moment hierarchy arising from kinetic theory, we formulate a far-from-equilibrium macroscopic theory that provides the possibility of describing both free-streaming and hydrodynamic regimes of heavy-ion collisions within a single framework. Unlike traditional hydrodynamic theories that include viscous corrections to finite order, the present formulation incorporates contributions to all orders in shear and bulk inverse Reynolds numbers, allowing it to handle large dissipative fluxes. By considering flow profiles relevant for heavy-ion collisions (Bjorken and Gubser flows), we demonstrate that the present approach provides excellent agreement with underlying kinetic theory throughout the fluid's evolution and, especially, in far-off-equilibrium regimes where traditional hydrodynamics breaks down.

Abstract:Using a semi-classical treatment of the linear sigma model, we simulate the dynamical evolution of an initially hot cylindrical rod endowed with a longitudinal Bjorken scaling expansion (a ``Bjorken rod''). The field equation is propagated until full decoupling has occurred and the asymptotic many-body state of free pions is then obtained by a suitable Fourier decomposition of the field and a subsequent stochastic determination of the number of quanta in each elementary mode. The resulting transverse pion spectrum exhibits visible enhancements below 200 MeV due to the parametric amplification caused by the oscillatory relaxation of the chiral order parameter. Ensembles of such final states are subjected to various event-by-event analyses. The factorial moments of the multiplicity distribution suggest that the soft pions are non-statistical. Furthermore, their emission patterns exhibit azimuthal correlations that have a bearing on the domain size in the source. Finally, the distribution of the neutral pion fraction shows a significant broadening for the soft pions which grows steadily as the number of azimuthal segments is increased. All of these features are indicative of disoriented chiral condensates and it may be interesting to apply similar analyses to actual data from high-energy nuclear collision experiments.
