Abstract:The goal of this paper is to study the dynamics of holomorphic diffeomorphisms in C^n such that the resonances among the first 1<= r<= n eigenvalues of the differential are generated over N by a finite number of Q-linearly independent multi-indices (and more resonances are allowed for other eigenvalues). We give sharp conditions for the existence of basins of attraction where a Fatou coordinate can be defined. Furthermore, we obtain a generalization of the Leau-Fatou flower theorem, providing a complete description of the dynamics in a full neighborhood of the origin for 1-resonant parabolically attracting holomorphic germs in Poincare'-Dulac normal form.

Abstract:In this paper we study the dynamics of germs of quasi-parabolic one-resonant biholomorphisms of ℂ n+1 fixing the origin, namely, those germs whose differential at the origin has one eigenvalue 1 and the others having a one-dimensional family of resonant relations. We define some invariants and give conditions which ensure the existence of attracting domains for such maps.

Abstract:In this paper we give analytic proofs of the existence of transversal homoclinic points for a family of non-globally smooth diffeomorphisms having the origin as a fixed point which come out as a truncated map governing the local dynamics near a critical period three cycle associated to the Secant map. Using Moser's version of Birkhoff-Smale's Theorem, we prove that the boundary of the basin of attraction of the origin contains a Cantor-like invariant subset such that the restricted dynamics to it is conjugate to the full shift of $N$-symbols for any integer $N\ge 2$ or infinity.

Abstract:There is a long standing conjecture in Hamiltonian analysis which claims that there exist at least $n$ geometrically distinct closed characteristics on every compact convex hypersurface in $\R^{2n}$ with $n\ge 2$. Besides many partial results, this conjecture has been only completely solved for $n=2$. In this paper, we give a confirmed answer to this conjecture for $n=3$. In order to prove this result, we establish first a new resonance identity for closed characteristics on every compact convex hypersurface $\Sg$ in $\R^{2n}$ when the number of geometrically distinct closed characteristics on $\Sg$ is finite. Then using this identity and earlier techniques of the index iteration theory, we prove the mentioned multiplicity result for $\R^6$. If there are exactly two geometrically distinct closed characteristics on a compact convex hypersuface in $\R^4$, we prove that both of them must be irrationally elliptic.

Abstract:A class of two-neuron networks with resonant bilinear terms is considered. The stability of the zero equilibrium and existence of Hopf bifurcation is studied. It is shown that the zero equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable when the time delay is small enough, while change of stability of the zero equilibrium will cause a bifurcating periodic solution as the time delay passes through a sequence of critical values. Some explicit formulae for determining the stability and the direction of the Hopf bifurcation periodic solutions bifurcating from Hopf bifurcations are obtained by using the normal form theory and center manifold theory. Finally, numerical simulations supporting the theoretical analysis are carried out.

Abstract:Resonance relations among periodic orbits on given energy hypersurfaces are very important for getting deeper understanding of the dynamics of the corresponding Hamiltonian systems. In this paper, we establish two new resonance identities for closed characteristics on every compact star-shaped hypersurface Σ in R^2n when the number of geometrically distinct closed characteristics on Σ is finite, which extend those identities established by C. Viterbo in 1989 for star-shaped hypersurfaces assuming in addition that all the closed characteristics and their iterates are non-degenerate, and that by W. Wang, X. Hu and Y. Long in 2007 for strictly convex hypersurfaces in R^2n.

Abstract:We study bifurcations of symmetric elliptic fixed points in the case of p : q resonances with odd . We consider the case where the initial area-preserving map possesses the central symmetry, i. e., is invariant under the change of variables , . We construct normal forms for such maps in the case , where and are mutually prime integer numbers, and is odd, and study local bifurcations of the fixed point in various settings. We prove the appearance of garlands consisting of four -periodic orbits, two orbits are elliptic and two orbits are saddles, and describe the corresponding bifurcation diagrams for one- and two-parameter families. We also consider the case where the initial map is reversible and find conditions where nonsymmetric periodic orbits of the garlands are nonconservative (contain symmetric pairs of stable and unstable orbits as well as area-contracting and area-expanding saddles).

Abstract:For any pseudo-Riemannian hyperbolic space $X$ over $\mathbb{R},\mathbb{C},\mathbb{H}$ or $\mathbb{O}$, we show that the resolvent $R(z)=(\Box-z\operatorname{Id})^{-1}$ of the Laplace-Beltrami operator $-\Box$ on $X$ can be extended meromorphically across the spectrum of $\Box$ as a family of operators $C_c^\infty(X)\to \mathcal{D}'(X)$. Its poles are called resonances and we determine them explicitly in all cases. For each resonance, the image of the corresponding residue operator in $\mathcal{D}'(X)$ forms a representation of the isometry group of $X$, which we identify with a subrepresentation of a degenerate principal series. Our study includes in particular the case of even functions on de Sitter and Anti-de Sitter spaces. For Riemannian symmetric spaces analogous results were obtained by Miatello-Will and Hilgert-Pasquale. The main qualitative differences between the Riemannian and the non-Riemannian setting are that for non-Riemannian spaces the resolvent can have poles of order two, it can have a pole at the branching point of the covering to which $R(z)$ extends, and the residue representations can be infinite-dimensional.

Inverse resonance problem on a perturbed infinite hyperbolic cylinder

Abstract:We study an inverse resonance problem on a radially and compactly perturbed infinite hyperbolic cylinder. Using the symmetries of this kind of geometry, we are led to study a stationary Schr{ö}dinger equation on the line with a potential V which is the sum of a P{ö}schl-Teller potential and a perturbation which we consider integrable and compactly supported. We define the resonances as the poles of the reflection coefficients with a negative imaginary part. We prove that, under some assumptions on the support of the compact perturbation, we are able to solve the question of uniqueness in the inverse resonance problem. We also give asymptotics of the resonances and show that they are asymptotically localised on two logarithmic branches and according to the localisation of the support of q, sometimes also on parallel lines to the imaginary axis.

Resonance near Border-Collision Bifurcations in Piecewise-Smooth, Continuous Maps

Abstract:Mode-locking regions (resonance tongues) formed by border-collision bifurcations of piecewise-smooth, continuous maps commonly exhibit a distinctive sausage-like geometry with pinch points called "shrinking points". In this paper we extend our unfolding of the piecewise-linear case [{\em Nonlinearity}, 22(5):1123-1144, 2009] to show how shrinking points are destroyed by nonlinearity. We obtain a codimension-three unfolding of this shrinking point bifurcation for $N$-dimensional maps. We show that the destruction of the shrinking points generically occurs by the creation of a curve of saddle-node bifurcations that smooth one boundary of the sausage, leaving a kink in the other boundary.

Abstract:For a smooth Morse-Smale vector field with Lyapunov constraints (Lyapunov function) one shows how and why the non-triviality of the cohomology, as concluded from its additive structure, detects rest points and the multiplicative structure of the cohomology detects instantons (trajectories between rest points). The same remains true for Lyapunov closed one form, a more general Lyapunov constraint, but in this presentation this fact is discussed only informally. These observations are based on the smooth " manifold with corner structures" of the stable/unstable sets and of the set of trajectories of such vector fields. (This paper is a written version of two talks with the same title given at IMAR Bucharest in November 2023.)

Abstract:We consider sequences $(X_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of coverings of convex cocompact hyperbolic surfaces $X$ with Euler characterictic $\chi(X_n)$ tending to $-\infty$ as $n\to \infty.$ We prove that for $n$ large enough, each $X_n$ has an abundance of "low-lying" resonances, provided the length of the shortest closed geodesic on $X_n$ grows sufficiently fast. When applied to congruence covers we obtain a bound that improves upon a result of Jakobson, Naud, and the author in \cite{JNS}. Our proof uses the wave 0-trace formula of Guillopé--Zworski \cite{GZ99} together with specifically tailored test-functions with rapidly decaying Fourier transform.

Abstract:In this paper we study bilipschitz equivalences of germs of holomorphic foliations in $(\mathbb{C}^2,0)$. We prove that the algebraic multiplicity of a singularity is invariant by such equivalences. Moreover, for a large class of singularities, we show that the projective holonomy representation is also a bilipschitz invariant.

Explicit Semiclassical Resonances from Many Delta Functions

Abstract:We study the scattering resonances arising from multiple $h$-dependent Dirac delta functions on the real line in the semiclassical regime $h \rightarrow 0$. We focus on resonances lying in strings along curves of the form $\text{Im } z \sim -\gamma h\log(1/h)$ and find that resonances along such strings exist if and only if $\gamma$ is a slope of a Newton polygon we construct from the parameters. Furthermore, the set of these $\gamma$ corresponds to a complete and disjoint partitioning of a line segment with delta functions at interval endpoints. Hence, there are at most $N-1$ strings of resonances from $N$ delta functions, improving a bound from (Datchev, Marzuola, & Wunsch 2023). Lastly, we identify a 'dominant pair' of delta functions in the sense that they correspond to the longest-living string of resonances, this string is the only one of logarithmic shape with respect to $\text{Re } z$, and no delta functions between them can contribute to strings of resonances. The simple properties of delta functions permit elementary proofs, requiring just undergraduate analysis and linear algebra.

Abstract:We study resonances for Jacobi operators on the half lattice with matrix valued coefficient and finitely supported perturbations. We describe a forbidden domain, the geometry of resonances and their asymptotics when the main coefficient of the perturbation (determining its length of support) goes to zero. Moreover, we show that\\ 1) Any sequence of points on the complex plane can be resonances for some Jacobi operators. In particular, the multiplicity of a resonance can be any number.\\ 2) The Jost determinant coincides with the Fredholm determinant up to the constant.\\ 3) The S-matrix on the a.c spectrum determines the perturbation uniquely.\\ 5) The value of the Jost matrix at any finite sequence of points on the a.c spectrum determine the Jacobi matrix uniquely. The length of this sequence is equals to the upper point of the support perturbation.

Bifurcation analysis of quasi-periodic orbits of mechanical systems with 1:2 internal resonance via spectral submanifolds

Abstract:A 1:2 internally resonant mechanical system can undergo secondary Hopf (Neimark-Sacker) bifurcations, resulting in a quasi-periodic response when the system is subject to harmonic excitation. While these quasi-periodic orbits have been observed in practice, their bifurcations are not well studied, especially in high-dimensional mechanical systems. This is mainly because of the challenges associated with the computation and bifurcation detection of these quasi-periodic motions. Here we present a computational framework to address these challenges via reductions on spectral submanifolds, which transforms quasi-periodic orbits of high-dimensional systems as limit cycles of four-dimensional reduced-order models. We apply the proposed framework to analyze bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits in several mechanical systems exhibiting 1:2 internal resonance, including a finite element model of a shallow-curved shell. We uncover local bifurcations such as period-doubling and saddle-node, as well as global bifurcations such as homoclinic connections, isolas, and simple bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits. We also observe cascades of period-doubling bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits that eventually result in chaotic motions, as well as the coexistence of chaotic and quasi-periodic attractors. These findings elucidate the complex bifurcation mechanism of quasi-periodic orbits in 1:2 internally resonant systems.
