Abstract:This paper focuses on the equavilent expression of fractional integrals/derivatives with an infinite series. A general framework for fractional Taylor series is developed by expanding an analytic function at the initial instant or the current time. The framework takes into account of the Riemann-Liouville definition, the Caputo definition, the constant order and the variable order. On this basis, some properties of fractional calculus are confirmed conveniently. An intuitive numerical approximation scheme is proposed subquently. Finally, several illustrative examples are presented to validate the effectiveness and practicability of the obtained results.

Abstract:In analysis, it's often useful to know the value of a function at infinity, this operation possesses pleasant properties. However, even when the limit does not exist, some intuitive considerations may suggest that the function still assumes a specific value at infinity in a certain sense. In Nevanlinna theory, all objects are studied on average, i.e., their integrals, hence the integral interpretation of the concept of convergence to a limit is beneficial for the theory of meromorphic functions. This is precisely the focus of this work, applied to sums of Cauchy kernels and their derivatives.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a new infinite-dimensional linking theorem without (PS)-type assumptions. The new theorem needs a weaker linking geometry and produces bounded (PS) sequences. The abstract result will be applied to the study of the existence of solutions of the strongly indefinite partial differential systems. For the first application, we consider the systemΔu=uinΩ,Δv=vinΩ,∂u/∂η=Hv(x,u,v)on∂Ω,∂v/∂η=Hu(x,u,v)on∂Ω,where Ω is a bounded domain in RN with smooth boundary, ∂∂η is the outer normal derivative, H:∂Ω×R×R→R is a positive C1-function. One nontrivial solution is obtained. The second application, we will solve the eigenvalue problem of the systemAv=−f(x,v,w),Bw=βg(x,v,w),β>0,where A, B are self-adjoint operators on L2(Ω), Ω⊂RN is not necessarily bounded; f,g are Carathéodory functions on Ω×R2. We get infinitely many solutions. We deal with asymptotically linear cases for both systems.

Abstract:The need to describe abrupt changes or response of nonlinear systems to impulsive stimuli is ubiquitous in applications. Also the informal use of infinitesimal and infinite quantities is still a method used to construct idealized but tractable models within the famous J. von Neumann reasonably wide area of applicability. We review the theory of generalized smooth functions as a candidate to address both these needs: a rigorous but simple language of infinitesimal and infinite quantities, and the possibility to deal with continuous and generalized function as if they were smooth maps: with pointwise values, free composition and hence nonlinear operations, all the classical theorems of calculus, a good integration theory, and new existence results for differential equations. We exemplify the applications of this theory through several models of singular dynamical systems: deduction of the heat and wave equations extended to generalized functions, a singular variable length pendulum wrapping on a parallelepiped, the oscillation of a pendulum damped by different media, a nonlinear stress-strain model of steel, singular Lagrangians as used in optics, and some examples from quantum mechanics.

A convenient setting for infinite-dimensional analysis

Abstract:In this work, we propose a convenient framework for infinite-dimensional analysis (including both real and complex analysis in infinite dimensions), in which differentiation (in some weak sense) and integration operations can be easily performed, integration by parts can be conveniently established under rather weak conditions, and especially some nice properties and consequences obtained by convolution in Euclidean spaces can be extended to infinite-dimensional spaces in some sense by taking the limit. Compared to the existing tools in infinite-dimensional analysis, our setting enjoys more convenient and clearer links with that of finite dimensions, and hence it is more suitable for computation and studying some analysis problems in infinite-dimensional spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new method for calculating fractional integrals and differentials. The method involves an equation that we have obtained from infinite applied integration by parts. The equation works for special class of functions and provides a series representation of integration. This representation will be useful for working with smooth functions and for approximation due to the potential reduction of the value of the sequential elements.

Abstract:In Affine Toda field theory, links among three generating functions for integrals of motion derived from Part (I) are studied, and some classically integrable boundary conditions are obtained. An infinite number of integrals of motion are calculated in ZMS model with quasi-periodic condition. We find the classically integrable boundary conditions and K+/-, matrices of ZMS model with independent boundary conditions on each end. It is identified that an infinite number of integrals of motion does exist and one of them is the Hamiltonian, so this system is completely integrable.

Abstract:The indefinite integral $$ \int x^\alpha e^{\eta x^\beta}\,_pF_q (a_1, a_2, \cdot\cdot\cdot a_p; b_1, b_2, \cdot\cdot\cdot, b_q; \lambda x^{\gamma})dx, $$ where $\alpha, \eta, \beta, \lambda, \gamma\ne0$ are real or complex constants and $_pF_q$ is the generalized hypergeometric function, is evaluated in terms of an infinite series involving the generalized hypergeometric function. Related integrals in which the exponential function $e^{\eta x^\beta}$ is either replaced by the hyperbolic function $\cosh\left(\eta x^\beta\right)$ or $\sinh\left(\eta x^\beta\right)$, or the sinusoidal function $\cos\left(\eta x^\beta\right)$ or $\sin\left(\eta x^\beta\right)$, are also evaluated in terms of infinite series involving the generalized hypergeometric function $_pF_q$. Some application examples from applied analysis, in which some new Fourier and Laplace integrals (or transforms) are evaluated, are given. The analytical solution of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation (with a linear mean flow background) in the short-wave limit is expressed in terms of some infinite series involving the hypergeometric series $_2F_3$. Making use of the hyperbolic and Euler identities, some interesting series identities involving exponential, hyperbolic, trigonometric functions and the generalized hypergeometric function are also derived.

Abstract:Fractional calculus is the calculus of differentiation and integration of non-integer orders. In a recently paper (Annals of Physics 323 (2008) 2756-2778), the Fundamental Theorem of Fractional Calculus is highlighted. Based on this theorem, in this paper we introduce fractional series expansion method to fractional calculus. We define a kind of fractional Taylor series of an infinitely fractionally-differentiable function. Further, based on our definition we generalize hypergeometric functions and derive corresponding differential equations. For finitely fractionally-differentiable functions, we observe that the non-infinitely fractionally-differentiability is due to more than one fractional indices. We expand functions with two fractional indices and display how this kind of series expansion can help to solve fractional differential equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss a similar functional to that of a standard integral. The main difference is in its definition: instead of taking a sum, we are taking a product. It turns out this new "star-integral" may be written in terms of the standard integral but it has many different (and similar) interesting properties compared to the regular integral. Further, we define a "star-derivative" and discuss its relationship to the "star-integral".
