Abstract:A classical topic in the mathematical theory of hydrodynamics is to study the evolution of the free surface separating air from an incompressible perfect fluid. The goal of this survey is to examine this problem for two important sets of equations: the water wave equations and the Hele-Shaw equations, including the Muskat problem. These equations are different in nature, dispersive or parabolic, but we will see that they can be studied using related tools. In particular, we will discuss a paradifferential approach to these problems.

Abstract:Consider a balance law where the flux depends explicitly on the space variable. At jump discontinuities, modeling considerations may impose the defect in the conservation of some quantities, thus leading to non conservative products. Below, we deduce the evolution in the smooth case from the jump conditions at discontinuities. Moreover, the resulting framework enjoys well posedness and solutions are uniquely characterized. These results apply, for instance, to the flow of water in a canal with varying width and depth, as well as to the inviscid Euler equations in pipes with varying geometry.

Bernoulli's muddle: a research on students' misconceptions in fluid dynamics

Abstract:Bernoulli's equation, which relates the pressure of an ideal fluid in motion with its velocity and height under certain conditions, is a central topic in General Physics courses for Science and Engineering students. This equation, frequently used both textbooks as in science outreach activities or museums, is often extrapolated to explain situations in which it is no longer valid. A common example is to assume that, in any situation, higher speed means lower pressure, a conclusion that is only acceptable under certain conditions. In this paper we report the results of an investigation with university students on some misconceptions present in fluid dynamics. We found that after completing the General Physics courses, many students have not developed a correct model about the interaction of a fluid element with its environment and extrapolate the idea that higher speed implies lower pressure in situations where it is no longer valid. We also show that an approach to fluid dynamics based on Newton's laws is more natural to address these misconceptions.

Abstract:We study the Hele-Shaw immiscible displacements when all surfaces tensions on the interfaces are zero. The Saffman-Taylor instability occurs when a less viscous fluid is displacing a more viscous one, in a rectangular Hele-Shaw cell. We prove that an intermediate liquid with a variable viscosity can almost suppress this instability. On the contrary, a large number of constant viscosity liquid-layers inserted between the initial fluids gives us boundless growth rates with respect to the wave numbers of perturbations. The same amount of intermediate liquid is used in both cases.

All the equations required for its analysis are exhibited and used to contrast the behavior of the system with the spherically symmetric case. Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 3, Page 3759-3801, June 2024. We study the equilibrium configurations for several fluid-structure interaction problems. The fluid is confined in a 2D unbounded channel that contains a body, free to move inside the channel with rigid motions (transversal translations and rotations). The motion of the fluid is generated by a Poiseuille inflow/outflow at infinity and governed by the stationary Navier–Stokes equations. For a model where the fluid is the air and the body represents the cross-section of a suspension bridge, therefore also subject to restoring elastic forces, we prove that for small inflows there exists a unique equilibrium position, while for large inflows we numerically show the appearance of additional equilibria. A similar uniqueness result is also obtained for a discretized 3D bridge, consisting in a finite number of cross-sections interacting with the adjacent ones. The very same model, but without restoring forces, is used to describe the mechanism of the Leonardo da Vinci ferry, which is able to cross a river without engines. We numerically determine the optimal orientation of the ferry that allows it to cross the river in minimal time.

Abstract:Transport is one of the most important physical processes in all energy and length scales. Ideal gases and hydrodynamics are, respectively, two opposite limits of transport. Here, we present an unexpected mathematical connection between these two limits; that is, there exist situations that the solution to a class of interacting hydrodynamic equations with certain initial conditions can be exactly constructed from the dynamics of noninteracting ideal gases. We analytically provide three such examples. The first two examples focus on scale-invariant systems, which generalize fermionization to the hydrodynamics of strongly interacting systems, and determine specific initial conditions for perfect density oscillations in a harmonic trap. The third example recovers the dark soliton solution in a one-dimensional Bose condensate. The results can explain a recent puzzling experimental observation in ultracold atomic gases by the Paris group and make further predictions for future experiments. We envision that extensive examples of such an ideal-gas approach to hydrodynamics can be found by systematical numerical search, which can find broad applications in different problems in various subfields of physics.

Abstract:In order to address the difficulties of classical fluid kinematics in describing vorticity and the paradox of linear correlation between viscous force and vorticity in the Navier-Stokes equations, the study examines the inherent relationship between momentum conservation and energy conservation and rederives the fundamental equations of fluid flow from new dynamic hypothesis. The study reveals that momentum conservation and mechanical energy conservation are the same concept termed in different descriptions. The material derivative of velocity is to depict the acceleration of fluid particles in Eulerian perspective. In the study, it is assumed that fluids only obey the theorem of momentum, which describes the translational motion of fluids. The centroid of fluid elements can undergo translational motion under a curl force field. In the hypothesis, the symmetry of stress tensor is determined by the properties of stress field rather than the conservation of moment of momentum for fluid elements. The stress tensor is symmetric when stress field is a curl free field, and the stress tensor is asymmetric when stress field is a curl field. New dynamic equilibrium equations for fluids and the constitutive relationship for Newtonian fluid are proposed under the hypothesis. The Navier-Stokes equations are obtained. The new model of fluid dynamics does not require Stokes hypothesis. It is obtained that vorticity reflects the magnitude distribution of shear flow in flow field.

Abstract:In fairly general conditions we give explicit (smooth) solutions for the potential flow. We show that, rigorously speaking, the equations of the fluid mechanics have not rotational solutions. However, within the usual approximations of an incompressible fluid and an isentropic flow, the remaining Navier-Stokes equation has approximate vorticial (rotational) solutions, generated by viscosity. In general, the vortices are unstable, and a discrete distribution of vorticial solutions is not in mechanical equilibrium; it forms an unstable vorticial liquid. On the other hand, these solutions may exhibit turbulent, fluctuating instabilities for large variations of the velocity over short distances. We represent a fully developed turbulence as a homogeneous, isotropic and highly-fluctuating distribution of singular centres of turbulence. A regular mean flow can be included. In these circumstances the Navier-Stokes equation exhibits three time scales. The equations of the mean flow can be disentangled from the equations of the fluctuating part, which is reduced to a vanishing inertial term. This latter equation is not satisfied after averaging out the temporal fluctuations. However, for a homogeneous and isotropic distribution of non-singular turbulence centres the equation for the inertial term is satisfied trivially, i.e. both the average fluctuating velocity and the average fluctuating inertial term are zero. If the velocity is singular at the turbulence centres, we are left with a quasi-ideal classical gas of singularities, or a solution of singularities in quasi thermal equilibrium in the background fluid. This is an example of an emergent dynamics. We give three examples of vorticial liquids.

Statistical Equilibrium Principles in 2D Fluid Flow: From Geophysical Fluids to the Solar Tachocline

Abstract:An overview is presented of several diverse branches of work in the area of effectively 2D fluid equilibria which have in common that they are constrained by an infinite number of conservation laws. Broad concepts, and the enormous variety of physical phenomena that can be explored, are highlighted. These span, roughly in order of increasing complexity, Euler flow, nonlinear Rossby waves, 3D axisymmetric flow, shallow water dynamics, and 2D magnetohydrodynamics. The classical field theories describing these systems bear some resemblance to perhaps more familiar fluctuating membrane and continuous spin models, but the fluid physics drives these models into unconventional regimes exhibiting large scale jet and eddy structures. From a dynamical point of view these structures are the end result of various conserved variable forward and inverse cascades. The resulting balance between large scale structure and small scale fluctuations is controlled by the competition between energy and entropy in the system free energy, in turn highly tunable through setting the values of the conserved integrals. Although the statistical mechanical description of such systems is fully self-consistent, with remarkable mathematical structure and diversity of solutions, great care must be taken because the underlying assumptions, especially ergodicity, can be violated or at minimum lead to exceedingly long equilibration times. Generalization of the theory to include weak driving and dissipation (e.g., non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and associated linear response formalism) could provide additional insights, but has yet to be properly explored.
A quaternionic unification of electromagnetism and hydrodynamics

Abstract:We have derived energy conservation equations from the quaternionic Newton's law that is compatible with Lorentz transformation. This Newton's law yields directly the Euler equation and other equations governing the fluid motion. With this formalism, the pressure contributes positively to the dynamics of the system in the same way mass does. Hydrodynamic equations are derived from Maxwell's equations by adopting an electromagnetohydrodynamics (EMH) analogy. In this analogy the hydroelectric field is related to the local acceleration of the fluid and the Lorentz gauge is related to the incompressible fluid condition. An analogous Lorentz gauge in hydrodynamics is proposed. We have shown that the vorticity of the fluid is developed whenever the particle local acceleration of the fluid deviates from the velocity direction. We have also shown that Lorentz force in electromagnetism corresponds to Euler force in fluids. Moreover, we have obtained Gauss's, Faraday's and Ampere's -like laws in Hydrodynamics.

Abstract:We obtain the hydrodynamic limit of one-dimensional interacting particle systems describing the macroscopic evolution of the density of mass in infinite volume from the microscopic dynamics. The processes are weak pertubations of the symmetric exclusion process by shift operators describing the spread of particles around positions where new sites are created.
On Energy Conservation for the Hydrostatic Euler Equations: An Onsager Conjecture

Abstract:Onsager's conjecture, which relates the conservation of energy to the regularity of weak solutions of the Euler equations, was completely resolved in recent years. In this work, we pursue an analogue of Onsager's conjecture in the context of the hydrostatic Euler equations (also known as the inviscid primitive equations of oceanic and atmospheric dynamics). In this case the relevant conserved quantity is the horizontal kinetic energy. We first consider the standard notion of weak solution which is commonly used in the literature. We show that if the horizontal velocity $(u,v)$ is sufficiently regular then the horizontal kinetic energy is conserved. Interestingly, the spatial Hölder regularity exponent which is sufficient for energy conservation in the context of the hydrostatic Euler equations is $\frac{1}{2}$ and hence larger than the corresponding regularity exponent for the Euler equations (which is $\frac{1}{3}$). This is due to the anisotropic regularity of the velocity field: Unlike the Euler equations, in the case of the hydrostatic Euler equations the vertical velocity $w$ is one degree spatially less regular with respect to the horizontal variables, compared to the horizontal velocity $(u,v)$. Since the standard notion of weak solution is not able to deal with this anisotropy properly, we introduce two new notions of weak solutions for which the vertical part of the nonlinearity is interpreted as a paraproduct. We finally prove several sufficient conditions for such weak solutions to conserve energy.

Abstract:Hydrodynamic discontinuities in an external potential and incompressible flow are investigated. Using the reaction front as an example in a 2D stream, an overdetermined system of equations is obtained that describes its motion in terms of the surface itself. Assuming that the harmonic flux approaching discontinuity is additional smooth, these equations can be used to determine the motion of this discontinuity without taking into account the influence of the flow behind the front, as well as the entire external flow. It is well known that for vanishingly low viscosity, the integral relation on the boundary (Dirichlet, Neumann problems) connects the tangential and normal components of the velocity. Knowing one of them along the boundary of the discontinuity, one can determine the entire external flow. However, assuming the external flow is smooth, this will also be the case for all derivatives of velocity with respect to coordinates and time. Then a paradox arises, knowing the position of the discontinuity and the velocity data at a point on its surface, it is possible to determine the motion of this discontinuity without taking into account the influence of the flow behind the front, as well as the entire external flow. There is no physical explanation for this mechanism. It is possible that a boundary layer is formed in front of the front, where viscosity plays a significant role and Euler equations are violated. It is argued that the classical idea of the motion of hydrodynamic discontinuities in the smooth, potential and incompressible flow in the external region should be supplemented in this case.

Abstract:The two-dimensional shallow water equations in Eulerian and Lagrangain coordinates are considered. Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism of the equations is given. The transformations mapping the two-dimensional shallow water equations with a circular or plane bottom into the gas dynamics equations of a polytropic gas with polytropic exponent $\gamma=2$ is represented. Group properties of the equations are considered, and the group classification for the case of the elliptic paraboloid bottom topography is performed. The properties of the two-dimensional shallow water equations in Lagrangian coordinates are discussed from the discretization point of view. New invariant conservative finite-difference schemes for the equations and their one-dimensional reductions are constructed. The schemes are derived either by extending the known one-dimensional schemes or by direct algebraic construction based on some assumptions on the form of the energy conservation law. Among the proposed schemes there are schemes possessing conservation laws of mass and energy.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the problem of obtaining a general port-Hamiltonian formulation of Newtonian fluids. We propose the port-Hamiltonian models to describe the energy flux of rotational three-dimensional isentropic and non-isentropic fluids, whose boundary flows and efforts can be used for control purposes or for power-preserving interconnection with other physical systems. In case of two-dimensional flows, we include the considerations about the operators associated with fluid vorticity, preserving the port-Hamiltonian structure of the models proposed.

Abstract:We consider here the stationary Micropolar fluid equations which are a particular generalization of the usual Navier-Stokes system where the microrotations of the fluid particles must be taken into account. We thus obtain two coupled equations: one based mainly in the velocity field u and the other one based in the microrotation field $\omega$. We will study in this work some problems related to the existence of weak solutions as well as some regularity and uniqueness properties. Our main result establish, under some suitable decay at infinity conditions for the velocity field only, the uniqueness of the trivial solution.

On the theory of body motion in confined Stokesian fluids

Abstract:We propose a theoretical method to decompose the solution of a Stokes flow past a body immersed in a confined fluid in two simpler problems, related separately to the two geometrical elements of these systems: (i) the body immersed in the unbounded fluid (represented by its Faxén operators), and (ii) the domain of the confinement (represented by its Stokesian multipoles). Specifically, by using a reflection method, and assuming linear and reciprocal boundary conditions \citep{procopio-giona_pof}, we provide the expression for the velocity field, the forces, torques and higher-order moments acting on the body in terms of: (i) the volume moments of the body in the unbounded ambient flow; (ii) the multipoles in the domain of the confinement; (iii) the collection of all the volumetric moments on the body immersed in all the regular parts of the multipoles considered as ambient flows. A detailed convergence analysis of the reflection method is developed. In the light of practical applications, we estimate the truncation error committed by considering only the lower order moments (thus truncating the matrices) and the errors associated with the approximated expressions available in the literature for force and torques. We apply the theoretical results to the archetypal hydrodynamic system of a sphere with Navier-slip boundary conditions near a plane wall with no-slip boundary conditions, to determine forces and torques on a translating and rotating sphere as a function of the slip length and of the distance of the sphere from the plane. The hydromechanics of a spheroid is also addressed.

Abstract:The dynamics of a membrane are that of a coupled system comprising a moving elastic surface and an incompressible membrane fluid. We will consider a reduced elastic surface model, which involves the evolution equations of the moving surface, the dynamic equations of the two-dimensional fluid, and the incompressible equation, all of which operate within a curved geometry. In this paper, we prove the local existence and uniqueness of the solution to the reduced elastic surface model by reformulating the model into a new system in the isothermal coordinates. One major difficulty is that of constructing an appropriate iterative scheme such that the limit system is consistent with the original system.
