Paradox of description for motion of a hydrodynamic discontinuity in a potential and incompressible flow

Abstract:Hydrodynamic discontinuities in an external potential and incompressible flow are investigated. Using the reaction front as an example in a 2D stream, an overdetermined system of equations is obtained that describes its motion in terms of the surface itself. Assuming that the harmonic flux approaching discontinuity is additional smooth, these equations can be used to determine the motion of this discontinuity without taking into account the influence of the flow behind the front, as well as the entire external flow. It is well known that for vanishingly low viscosity, the integral relation on the boundary (Dirichlet, Neumann problems) connects the tangential and normal components of the velocity. Knowing one of them along the boundary of the discontinuity, one can determine the entire external flow. However, assuming the external flow is smooth, this will also be the case for all derivatives of velocity with respect to coordinates and time. Then a paradox arises, knowing the position of the discontinuity and the velocity data at a point on its surface, it is possible to determine the motion of this discontinuity without taking into account the influence of the flow behind the front, as well as the entire external flow. There is no physical explanation for this mechanism. It is possible that a boundary layer is formed in front of the front, where viscosity plays a significant role and Euler equations are violated. It is argued that the classical idea of the motion of hydrodynamic discontinuities in the smooth, potential and incompressible flow in the external region should be supplemented in this case.

A paradox in Hele-Shaw displacements

Abstract:We study the Hele-Shaw immiscible displacements when all surfaces tensions on the interfaces are zero. The Saffman-Taylor instability occurs when a less viscous fluid is displacing a more viscous one, in a rectangular Hele-Shaw cell. We prove that an intermediate liquid with a variable viscosity can almost suppress this instability. On the contrary, a large number of constant viscosity liquid-layers inserted between the initial fluids gives us boundless growth rates with respect to the wave numbers of perturbations. The same amount of intermediate liquid is used in both cases.

On Energy Conservation for the Hydrostatic Euler Equations: An Onsager Conjecture

Abstract:Onsager's conjecture, which relates the conservation of energy to the regularity of weak solutions of the Euler equations, was completely resolved in recent years. In this work, we pursue an analogue of Onsager's conjecture in the context of the hydrostatic Euler equations (also known as the inviscid primitive equations of oceanic and atmospheric dynamics). In this case the relevant conserved quantity is the horizontal kinetic energy. We first consider the standard notion of weak solution which is commonly used in the literature. We show that if the horizontal velocity $(u,v)$ is sufficiently regular then the horizontal kinetic energy is conserved. Interestingly, the spatial Hölder regularity exponent which is sufficient for energy conservation in the context of the hydrostatic Euler equations is $\frac{1}{2}$ and hence larger than the corresponding regularity exponent for the Euler equations (which is $\frac{1}{3}$). This is due to the anisotropic regularity of the velocity field: Unlike the Euler equations, in the case of the hydrostatic Euler equations the vertical velocity $w$ is one degree spatially less regular with respect to the horizontal variables, compared to the horizontal velocity $(u,v)$. Since the standard notion of weak solution is not able to deal with this anisotropy properly, we introduce two new notions of weak solutions for which the vertical part of the nonlinearity is interpreted as a paraproduct. We finally prove several sufficient conditions for such weak solutions to conserve energy.

Abstract:In his monograph Thermodynamics, I. Müller proves that for incompressible media the volume does not change with the temperature. This Müller paradox yields an incompatibility between experimental evidence and the entropy principle. This result has generated much debate within the mathematical and thermodynamical communities as to the basis of Boussinesq approximation in fluid dynamics. The aim of this paper is to prove that for an appropriate definition of incompressibility, as a limiting case of quasi thermal-incompressible body, the entropy principle holds for pressures smaller than a critical pressure value. The main consequence of our result is the physically obvious one, that for very large pressures, no body can be perfectly incompressible. The result is first established in the fluid case. In the case of hyperelastic media subject to large deformations the approach is similar, but with a suitable definition of the pressure associated with convenient stress tensor decomposition.

Abstract:The Lagrangian energy description of multiple rigid bodies moving through an inviscid fluid is proved equivalent to the corresponding momentum-type one using the harmonic function theory. In two dimensional cases, the description can be used to derive the extended unsteady Blasius formulae in the complex form. It indicates that the pressure distribution over the surface of any submerged body are functions of coupled translational and angular accelerations of all bodies, and therefore masses of all bodies influence hydrodynamic loads on a body.

Abstract:In order to address the difficulties of classical fluid kinematics in describing vorticity and the paradox of linear correlation between viscous force and vorticity in the Navier-Stokes equations, the study examines the inherent relationship between momentum conservation and energy conservation and rederives the fundamental equations of fluid flow from new dynamic hypothesis. The study reveals that momentum conservation and mechanical energy conservation are the same concept termed in different descriptions. The material derivative of velocity is to depict the acceleration of fluid particles in Eulerian perspective. In the study, it is assumed that fluids only obey the theorem of momentum, which describes the translational motion of fluids. The centroid of fluid elements can undergo translational motion under a curl force field. In the hypothesis, the symmetry of stress tensor is determined by the properties of stress field rather than the conservation of moment of momentum for fluid elements. The stress tensor is symmetric when stress field is a curl free field, and the stress tensor is asymmetric when stress field is a curl field. New dynamic equilibrium equations for fluids and the constitutive relationship for Newtonian fluid are proposed under the hypothesis. The Navier-Stokes equations are obtained. The new model of fluid dynamics does not require Stokes hypothesis. It is obtained that vorticity reflects the magnitude distribution of shear flow in flow field.

Variational principle for the Navier-Stokes equations

Abstract:A variational principle is presented for the Navier-Stokes equations in the case of a contained boundary-driven, homogeneous, incompressible, viscous fluid. Based upon making the fluid's total viscous dissipation over a given time interval stationary subject to the constraint of the Navier-Stokes equations, the variational problem looks overconstrained and intractable. However, introducing a nonunique velocity decomposition, u(x,t)=phi(x,t) + nu(x,t), "opens up" the variational problem so that what is presumed a single allowable point over the velocity domain u corresponding to the unique solution of the Navier-Stokes equations becomes a surface with a saddle point over the extended domain (phi,nu). Complementary or dual variational problems can then be constructed to estimate this saddle point value strictly from above as part of a minimization process or below via a maximization procedure. One of these reduced variational principles is the natural and ultimate generalization of the upper bounding problem developed by Doering and Constantin. The other corresponds to the ultimate Busse problem which now acts to lower bound the true dissipation. Crucially, these reduced variational problems require only the solution of a series of linear problems to produce bounds even though their unique intersection is conjectured to correspond to a solution of the nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations.

Abstract:Rayleigh's stability analysis of cylindrical Couette flow, of 1889 and 1916, is in contradiction with observation. The analysis is repeated in many textbooks and reviews up to 2017, and its failure to agree with observation was duly noted. More successful approaches have been found, but little was done to discover the weak point of Rayleigh's argument, what is the reason that it fails. This paper identifies the mistake as one that is endemic in the literature. Since the physics of the problem remains poorly understood, a discussion of this paradox should prove useful. Briefly, the argument depends on the Navier-Stokes equation and on the assumption that a certain expression called "energy density" or "kinetic potential" can be interpreted and used as such. It is shown here that %no energy density is compatible with the Navier-Stokes equation, in the context of Couette flow or in general, and that the use of any expression as a kinetic potential is in conflict with the Navier-Stokes equation, in all but a very limited context. An alternative analysis of basic Couette flow, based on an action principle for compressible fluids, provides a Hamiltonian density as well as a kinetic potential. The two are not the same, even in the simplest cases. The action principle provides a kinetic potential; a new criterion for stability recognizes the profound effect of the surface adhesion and the tensile strength of water. It is in full agreement with observation. Several new experiments are suggested.

Abstract:The Josephson–Anderson relation, valid for the incompressible Navier–Stokes solutions which describe flow around a solid body, equates the power dissipated by drag instantaneously to the flux of vorticity across the flow lines of the potential Euler solution considered by d'Alembert. Its derivation involves a decomposition of the velocity field into this background potential-flow field and a solenoidal field corresponding to the rotational wake behind the body, with the flux term describing a transfer from the interaction energy between the two fields and into kinetic energy of the rotational flow. We establish the validity of the Josephson–Anderson relation for the weak solutions of the Euler equations obtained in the zero-viscosity limit, with one transfer term due to inviscid vorticity flux and the other due to a viscous skin-friction anomaly. Furthermore, we establish weak forms of the local balance equations for both interaction and rotational energies. We define nonlinear spatial fluxes of these energies and show that the asymptotic flux of interaction energy to the wall equals the anomalous skin-friction term in the Josephson–Anderson relation. However, when the Euler solution satisfies a condition of vanishing normal velocity at the wall, then the anomalous term vanishes. In this case, we can show also that the asymptotic flux of rotational energy to the wall must vanish and we obtain in the rotational wake the Onsager–Duchon–Robert relation between viscous dissipation anomaly and inertial dissipation due to scale-cascade. In this way we establish a precise connection between the Josephson–Anderson relation and the Onsager theory of turbulence, and we provide a novel resolution of the d'Alembert paradox.

Abstract:The existing paradox between theory and computational experiment for weak solutions of systems of conservation laws in higher space dimensions is arguably resolved. Apparently successful computations are identified with underlying boundary-value problems which are well-posed only in a weakened sense. In the absence of hyperbolicity in particular, prescribed boundary data sufficient to determine an a priori bound for an entropy weak solution need not suffice to imply local uniqueness thereof. In this context, fluid flow models based on stationary or self-similar reductions of Euler systems are distinguished as particularly attractive for computational investigation.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the 3D Euler equations and we first prove a criterion for energy conservation for weak solutions, where the velocity satisfies additional assumptions in fractional Sobolev spaces with respect to the space variables, balanced by proper integrability with respect to time. Next, we apply the criterion to study the energy conservation of solution of the Beltrami type, carefully applying properties of products in (fractional and possibly negative) Sobolev spaces and employing a suitable bootstrap argument.

The three limits of the hydrostatic approximation

Abstract:The primitive equations are derived from the $3D$-Navier-Stokes equations by the hydrostatic approximation. Formally, assuming an $\varepsilon$-thin domain and anisotropic viscosities with vertical viscosity $\nu_z=\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^\gamma)$ where $\gamma=2$, one obtains the primitive equations with full viscosity as $\varepsilon\to 0$. Here, we take two more limit equations into consideration: For $\gamma<2$ the $2D$-Navier-Stokes equations are obtained. For $\gamma>2$ the primitive equations with only horizontal viscosity $-\Delta_H$ as $\varepsilon\to 0$. Thus, there are three possible limits of the hydrostatic approximation depending on the assumption on the vertical viscosity. The latter convergence has been proven recently by Li, Titi, and Yuan using energy estimates. Here, we consider more generally $\nu_z=\varepsilon^2 \delta$ and show how maximal regularity methods and quadratic inequalities can be an efficient approach to the same end for $\varepsilon,\delta\to 0$. The flexibility of our methods is also illustrated by the convergence for $\delta\to \infty$ and $\varepsilon\to 0$ to the $2D$-Navier-Stokes equations.

Statistical Equilibrium Principles in 2D Fluid Flow: From Geophysical Fluids to the Solar Tachocline

Abstract:An overview is presented of several diverse branches of work in the area of effectively 2D fluid equilibria which have in common that they are constrained by an infinite number of conservation laws. Broad concepts, and the enormous variety of physical phenomena that can be explored, are highlighted. These span, roughly in order of increasing complexity, Euler flow, nonlinear Rossby waves, 3D axisymmetric flow, shallow water dynamics, and 2D magnetohydrodynamics. The classical field theories describing these systems bear some resemblance to perhaps more familiar fluctuating membrane and continuous spin models, but the fluid physics drives these models into unconventional regimes exhibiting large scale jet and eddy structures. From a dynamical point of view these structures are the end result of various conserved variable forward and inverse cascades. The resulting balance between large scale structure and small scale fluctuations is controlled by the competition between energy and entropy in the system free energy, in turn highly tunable through setting the values of the conserved integrals. Although the statistical mechanical description of such systems is fully self-consistent, with remarkable mathematical structure and diversity of solutions, great care must be taken because the underlying assumptions, especially ergodicity, can be violated or at minimum lead to exceedingly long equilibration times. Generalization of the theory to include weak driving and dissipation (e.g., non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and associated linear response formalism) could provide additional insights, but has yet to be properly explored.
Gravity and fluid dynamic correspondence on a null hypersurface: inconsistencies and advancement

Abstract:Unlike black hole thermodynamics, the fluid-gravity correspondence of a generic null surface appears to be ``incomplete''; though both approaches point to the emergent nature of gravitation. In the existing formulation of fluid-gravity correspondence of a null surface, we have only the momentum conservation relation in the form of the Damour-Navier-Stokes (DNS) equation. The other relations, such as the energy conservation relation, continuity relation, etc., are almost non-existent and are discussed sporadically in literature for stretched horizons. Furthermore, the fluid-gravity correspondence is not formulated from a suitable energy-momentum tensor in the conventional manner. In the paper, we address these issues. By giving the energy conservation relation, we improve the fluid-gravity analogy on a generic null hypersurface. Additionally, by introducing a suitable energy-momentum tensor, which forms the basis of the entire fluid description, we formulate the entire fluid description of the null surface. Moreover, we provide the expression of continuity relation in the context of fluid-gravity correspondence. The entire analysis has been done for a generic null surface, which differs from the existing stretched horizon approach and, thereby, expands the scope of applicability for any arbitrary null surface.

A quaternionic unification of electromagnetism and hydrodynamics

Abstract:We have derived energy conservation equations from the quaternionic Newton's law that is compatible with Lorentz transformation. This Newton's law yields directly the Euler equation and other equations governing the fluid motion. With this formalism, the pressure contributes positively to the dynamics of the system in the same way mass does. Hydrodynamic equations are derived from Maxwell's equations by adopting an electromagnetohydrodynamics (EMH) analogy. In this analogy the hydroelectric field is related to the local acceleration of the fluid and the Lorentz gauge is related to the incompressible fluid condition. An analogous Lorentz gauge in hydrodynamics is proposed. We have shown that the vorticity of the fluid is developed whenever the particle local acceleration of the fluid deviates from the velocity direction. We have also shown that Lorentz force in electromagnetism corresponds to Euler force in fluids. Moreover, we have obtained Gauss's, Faraday's and Ampere's -like laws in Hydrodynamics.

Stokes' paradox in rarefied gases: A perspective through the method of fundamental solutions

Abstract:In the realm of fluid dynamics, a curious and counterintuitive phenomenon is Stokes' paradox. While Stokes equations -- used for modeling slow and steady flows -- lead to a meaningful solution to the problem of slow and steady flow past a sphere, they fail to yield a non-trivial solution to the problem of slow and steady flow past an infinitely long cylinder (a two-dimensional problem essentially); this is referred to as Stokes' paradox. We revisit this paradox in the context of rarefied gas flows by means of the method of fundamental solutions (MFS). To this end, we adopt an extended hydrodynamic model, referred to as the CCR model, consisting of the balance equations for the mass, momentum and energy and closed with the coupled constitutive relations. We determine an analytic solution of the CCR model for the problem and compare it with the MFS-based numerical solution. Apart from addressing flow past a circular cylinder, we aim to showcase the capability of the MFS to predict the flow past other objects in two dimensions for which the analytic solutions do not exist. For that, we investigate the problem of rarefied gas flow past an infinitely long semicircular cylinder.

Abstract:Stokes flow equations, used to model creeping flow, are a commonly used simplification of the Navier–Stokes equations. In infinite domains, they admit a fundamental paradox. In this work we review this paradox and present new insights related to recent research. We approach the paradox from three different points of view: modern functional analysis, numerical simulations, and classical analytic techniques. The first approach yields a novel, rigorous derivation of the paradox. We also show that relaxing the Stokes no-slip condition (by introducing a Navier friction condition) in one case resolves the Stokes paradox but gives rise to d'Alembert's paradox. The Stokes paradox has previously been resolved by Oseen, who showed that it is caused by a limited validity of Stokes' approximation. We show that the paradox still holds for the Reynolds–Orr equations describing kinetic energy flow instability, meaning that flow instability steadily increases with domain size. We refer to this as an instability paradox.

Compressible and immiscible fluids with arbitrary density ratio

Abstract:For the water-air system, the density ratio is as high as about 1000; no model can fully tackle such a high density ratio system. Here, we present an alternative theory for the density evolution equations in computational fluid dynamics, differing from the concept of Navier-Stokes and Euler equations. Our derivation is built upon the physical principle of energy minimization from the aspect of thermodynamics. The present results are consistent with Landau's theory of sound speed, and, most importantly, provide a generalization of Bernoulli's principle for energy conservation. The present model can be applied for immiscible fluids with arbitrary density ratios, thereby, opening a new window for computational fluid dynamics both for compressible and incompressible fluids.

Abstract:One of the most important conservation laws in atmospheric and oceanic science is conservation of potential vorticity. The original derivation is approximately a century old, in the work of Rossby and Ertel, and it is related to the celebrated circulation theorems of Kelvin and Bjerknes. However, the laws apply to idealized fluids, and extensions to more realistic scenarios have been problematic. Here, these laws are extended to hold with additional fundamental complexities, including salinity in the ocean, or moisture and clouds in the atmosphere. In the absence of these additional complexities, it is known that potential vorticity is conserved following each fluid parcel; here, for a salty ocean or cloudy atmosphere, the general conserved quantity is potential vorticity integrated over certain pancake-shaped volumes. Furthermore, the conservation laws are also related to a symmetry in the Lagrangian, which brings a connection to the symmetry-conservation relationships seen in other areas of physics.
