Abstract:A thorough study on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation of the Maxwell-Schrödinger system in the semi-classical regime is given. For the Maxwell part which is treated classically, an alternative approach directly using the vector and scalar potentials (A and Φ) is taken. This approach is stable in the long wavelength regime and removes the need to extract the potentials at every time step. Perfectly matched layer (PML) is developed for this system. For the Schrödinger and quantum mechanical part, minimal coupling is applied to couple the charges to the electromagnetic potentials. Simulation results agree with the theory of quantum coherent states.

Abstract:We prove an almost global existence result for the Klein-Gordon equation with the Kirchhoff-type nonlinearity on T-d with Cauchy data of small amplitude epsilon. We show a lower bound epsilon(-)(2N)(-2) for the existence time with any natural number N. The proof relies on the method of normal forms and induction. The structure of the nonlinearity is good enough that proceeds normal forms up to any order.
On the path integral simulation of space-time fractional Schroedinger equation with time independent potentials

Abstract:In this work a Feynman-Kac path integral method based on Levy measure has been proposed for solving the Cauchy problems associated with the space-time fractional Schroedinger equations arising in interacting systems in fractional quantum mechanics. The Continuous Time Random Walk(CTRW) model is used to simulate the underlying Levy process-a generalized Wiener process. Since we are interested to capture the lowest energy state of quantum systems, we use Pareto distribution as opposed to Mittag-Leffler random variables, which are more suitable for finite time. Adopting the CTRW model we have been able to simulate the space-time fractional diffusion process with comparable simplicity and convergence rate as in the case of a standard diffusion. We hope this paves an elegant way to solve space-time diffusion equations numerically through Fractional Feynman-Kac path integral technique as an alternative to fractional calculus.

Abstract:In this work we consider a suitable generalization of the Feynman path integral on a specific class of Riemannian manifolds consisting of compact Lie groups with bi-invariant Riemannian metrics. The main tools we use are the Cartan development map, the notion of oscillatory integral, and the Chernoff approximation theorem. We prove that, for a class of functions of a dense subspace of the relevant Hilbert space, the Feynman map produces the solution of the Schrödinger equation, where the Laplace-Beltrami operator coincides with the second order Casimir operator of the group.

Abstract:Functionals of particles' paths have diverse applications in physics, mathematics, hydrology, economics, and other fields. Under the framework of continuous time random walk (CTRW), the governing equations for the probability density functions (PDFs) of the functionals, including the ones of the paths of stochastic processes of normal diffusion, anomalous diffusion, and even the diffusion with reaction, have been derived. Sometimes, the stochastic processes in physics and chemistry are naturally described by Langevin equations. The Langevin picture has the advantages in studying the dynamics with an external force field and analyzing the effect of noise resulting from a fluctuating environment. We derive the governing equations of the PDFs of the functionals of paths of Langevin system with both space and time dependent force field and arbitrary multiplicative noise; and the backward version is proposed for the system with arbitrary additive noise or multiplicative Gaussian white noise together with a force field. For the newly built equations, their applications of solving the PDFs of the occupation time and area under the trajectory curve are provided, and the results are confirmed by simulations.

Tackling Feynman integrals with quantum minimization algorithms

Abstract:One of the most severe bottlenecks to reach high-precision predictions in QFT is the calculation of multiloop multileg Feynman integrals. Several new strategies have been proposed in the last years, allowing impressive results with deep implications in particle physics. Still, the efficiency of such techniques starts to drastically decrease when including many loops and legs. In this talk, we explore the implementation of quantum algorithms to optimize the integrands of scattering amplitudes. We rely on the manifestly causal loop-tree duality, which translates the loop into phase-space integrals and avoids the spurious singularities due to non-causal effects. Then, we built a Hamiltonian codifying causal-compatible contributions and minimize it using a Variational Quantum Eigensolver. Our very promising results point towards a potential speed-up for achieving a more numerically-stable representation of Feynman integrals by using quantum computers.

Efficient Quantum Simulation Algorithms in the Path Integral Formulation

Abstract:We provide a new paradigm for quantum simulation that is based on path integration that allows quantum speedups to be observed for problems that are more naturally expressed using the path integral formalism rather than the conventional sparse Hamiltonian formalism. We provide two novel quantum algorithms based on Hamiltonian versions of the path integral formulation and another for Lagrangians of the form $\frac{m}{2}\dot{x}^2 - V(x)$. This Lagrangian path integral algorithm is based on a new rigorous derivation of a discrete version of the Lagrangian path integral. Our first Hamiltonian path integral method breaks up the paths into short timesteps. It is efficient under appropriate sparsity assumptions and requires a number of queries to oracles that give the eigenvalues and overlaps between the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian terms that scales as $t^{o(1)}/\epsilon^{o(1)}$ for simulation time $t$ and error $\epsilon$. The second approach uses long-time path integrals for near-adiabatic systems and has query complexity that scales as $O(1/\sqrt{\epsilon})$ if the energy eigenvalue gaps and simulation time is sufficiently long. Finally, we show that our Lagrangian simulation algorithm requires a number of queries to an oracle that computes the discrete Lagrangian that scales for a system with $\eta$ particles in $D+1$ dimensions, in the continuum limit, as $\widetilde{O}(\eta D t^2/\epsilon)$ if $V(x)$ is bounded and finite and the wave function obeys appropriate position and momentum cutoffs. This shows that Lagrangian dynamics can be efficiently simulated on quantum computers and opens up the possibility for quantum field theories for which the Hamiltonian is unknown to be efficiently simulated on quantum computers.

Abstract:Our object of study is the asymptotic growth of heaviest paths in a charged (weighted with signed weights) complete directed acyclic graph. Edge charges are i.i.d. random variables with common distribution $F$ supported on $[-\infty,1]$ with essential supremum equal to $1$ (a charge of $-\infty$ is understood as the absence of an edge). The asymptotic growth rate is a constant that we denote by $C(F)$. Even in the simplest case where $F=p\delta_1 + (1-p)\delta_{-\infty}$, corresponding to the longest path in the Barak-Erd\H{o}s random graph, there is no closed-form expression for this function, but good bounds do exist. In this paper we construct a Markovian particle system that we call "Max Growth System" (MGS), and show how it is related to the charged random graph. The MGS is a generalization of the Infinite Bin Model that has been the object of study of a number of papers. We then identify a random functional of the process that admits a stationary version and whose expectation equals the unknown constant $C(F)$. Furthermore, we construct an effective perfect simulation algorithm for this functional which produces samples from the random functional.

Abstract:The Kubo formula is a cornerstone in our understanding of near-equilibrium transport phenomena. While conceptually elegant, the application of Kubo's linear-response theory to interesting problems is hindered by the need for algorithms that are accurate and scalable to large lattice sizes beyond one spatial dimension. Here, we propose a general framework to numerically study large systems, which combines the spectral accuracy of Chebyshev expansions with the efficiency of divide-and-conquer methods. We use the hybrid algorithm to calculate the two-terminal conductance and the bulk conductivity tensor of 2D lattice models with over 107 sites. By efficiently sampling the microscopic information contained in billions of Chebyshev moments, the algorithm is able to accurately resolve the linear-response properties of complex systems in the presence of quenched disorder. On the Particle Approximation of Lagged Feynman-Kac Formulae

Abstract:In this paper we examine the numerical approximation of the limiting invariant measure associated with Feynman-Kac formulae. These are expressed in a discrete time formulation and are associated with a Markov chain and a potential function. The typical application considered here is the computation of eigenvalues associated with non-negative operators as found, for example, in physics or particle simulation of rare-events. We focus on a novel \emph{lagged} approximation of this invariant measure, based upon the introduction of a ratio of time-averaged Feynman-Kac marginals associated with a positive operator iterated $l \in\mathbb{N}$ times; a lagged Feynman-Kac formula. This estimator and its approximation using Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) have been extensively employed in the physics literature. In short, DMC is an iterative algorithm involving $N\in\mathbb{N}$ particles or walkers simulated in parallel, that undergo sampling and resampling operations. In this work, it is shown that for the DMC approximation of the lagged Feynman-Kac formula, one has an almost sure characterization of the $\mathbb{L}_1$-error as the time parameter (iteration) goes to infinity and this is at most of $\mathcal{O}(\exp\{-\kappa l\}/N)$, for $\kappa>0$. In addition a non-asymptotic in time, and time uniform $\mathbb{L}_1-$bound is proved which is $\mathcal{O}(l/\sqrt{N})$. We also prove a novel central limit theorem to give a characterization of the exact asymptotic in time variance. This analysis demonstrates that the strategy used in physics, namely, to run DMC with $N$ and $l$ small and, for long time enough, is mathematically justified. Our results also suggest how one should choose $N$ and $l$ in practice. We emphasize that these results are not restricted to physical applications; they have broad relevance to the general problem of particle simulation of the Feynman-Kac formula.

Abstract:We investigate, by numerical simulation, the path probability of non dissipative mechanical systems undergoing stochastic motion. The aim is to search for the relationship between this probability and the usual mechanical action. The model of simulation is a one-dimensional particle subject to conservative force and Gaussian random displacement. The probability that a sample path between two fixed points is taken is computed from the number of particles moving along this path, an output of the simulation, devided by the total number of particles arriving at the final point. It is found that the path probability decays exponentially with increasing action of the sample paths. The decay rate increases with decreasing randomness. This result supports the existence of a classical analog of the Feynman factor in the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics for Hamiltonian systems.

Fast simulation of planar Clifford circuits

Abstract:A general quantum circuit can be simulated classically in exponential time. If it has a planar layout, then a tensor-network contraction algorithm due to Markov and Shi has a runtime exponential in the square root of its size, or more generally exponential in the treewidth of the underlying graph. Separately, Gottesman and Knill showed that if all gates are restricted to be Clifford, then there is a polynomial time simulation. We combine these two ideas and show that treewidth and planarity can be exploited to improve Clifford circuit simulation. Our main result is a classical algorithm with runtime scaling asymptotically as $n^{\omega/2}<n^{1.19}$ which samples from the output distribution obtained by measuring all $n$ qubits of a planar graph state in given Pauli bases. Here $\omega$ is the matrix multiplication exponent. We also provide a classical algorithm with the same asymptotic runtime which samples from the output distribution of any constant-depth Clifford circuit in a planar geometry. Our work improves known classical algorithms with cubic runtime. A key ingredient is a mapping which, given a tree decomposition of some graph $G$, produces a Clifford circuit with a structure that mirrors the tree decomposition and which emulates measurement of the corresponding graph state. We provide a classical simulation of this circuit with the runtime stated above for planar graphs and otherwise $nt^{\omega-1}$ where $t$ is the width of the tree decomposition. Our algorithm incorporates two subroutines which may be of independent interest. The first is a matrix-multiplication-time version of the Gottesman-Knill simulation of multi-qubit measurement on stabilizer states. The second is a new classical algorithm for solving symmetric linear systems over $\mathbb{F}_2$ in a planar geometry, extending previous works which only applied to non-singular linear systems in the analogous setting.

Loop Feynman integration on a quantum computer

Abstract:This Letter investigates in detail the performance and advantages of a new quantum Monte Carlo integrator, dubbed Quantum Fourier Iterative Amplitude Estimation (QFIAE), to numerically evaluate for the first time loop Feynman integrals in a near-term quantum computer and a quantum simulator. In order to achieve a quadratic speedup, QFIAE introduces a Quantum Neural Network (QNN) that efficiently decomposes the multidimensional integrand into its Fourier series. For a one-loop tadpole Feynman diagram, we have successfully implemented the quantum algorithm on a real quantum computer and obtained a reasonable agreement with the analytical values. Oneloop Feynman diagrams with more external legs have been analyzed in a quantum simulator. These results thoroughly illustrate how our quantum algorithm effectively estimates loop Feynman integrals and the method employed could also find applications in other fields such as finance, artificial intelligence, or other physical sciences.

A Fourier analysis framework for approximate classical simulations of quantum circuits

Abstract:What makes a class of quantum circuits efficiently classically simulable on average? I present a framework that applies harmonic analysis of groups to circuits with a structure encoded by group parameters. Expanding the circuits in a suitable truncated multi-path operator basis gives algorithms to evaluate the Fourier coefficients of output distributions or expectation values that are viewed as functions on the group. Under certain conditions, a truncated Fourier series can be efficiently estimated with guaranteed mean-square convergence. For classes of noisy circuits, it leads to algorithms for sampling and mean value estimation under error models with a spectral gap, where the complexity increases exponentially with the gap's inverse and polynomially with the circuit's size. This approach unifies and extends existing algorithms for noisy parametrised or random circuits using Pauli basis paths. For classes of noiseless circuits, mean values satisfying Lipschitz continuity can be on average approximated using efficient sparse Fourier decompositions. I also discuss generalisations to homogeneous spaces, qudit systems and a way to analyse random circuits via matrix coefficients of irreducible representations.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the speed of convergence of the fluctuations of a general class of Feynman-Kac particle approximation models. We design an original approach based on new Berry-Esseen type estimates for abstract martingale sequences combined with original exponential concentration estimates of interacting processes. These results extend the corresponding statements in the classical theory and apply to a class of branching and genealogical path-particle models arising in nonlinear filtering literature as well as in statistical physics and biology.

Abstract:Feynman gave in 1982 a keynote speech \textit{Simulating Physics with Computers} (Int. J. Theor. Phys. {\bf 21}, 467 (1982)) in which he talked ``...about the possibility...that the computer will do exactly the same as nature". The motivation was that: ``...the physical world is quantum mechanical, and therefore the proper problem is the simulation of quantum physics". Here I try after more than forty years to answer Feynman's question of whether it is possible to perform exact computer simulations. Many computer simulations are not exact, they contain mean field approximations that disobey the symmetry in the quantum dynamics with Newton's third law, e.g. almost all astrophysical simulations of galaxy systems. After a review of computer simulations and the problems of simulating real systems, I argue that Newton's discrete dynamics, which is used in almost all computer simulations and which is exact in the same sense as Newton's analytic dynamics, is the classical limit path of Feynman's quantum paths. However, the physical world is not known exactly and it is much more complex than any simulated systems, and so far no real systems have been simulated exactly. Hence, more than forty years later, and after hundreds of thousands of computer simulations of the physical system's dynamics the answer to Feynman's question is still negative. But although it is not possible to simulate the dynamics exactly for any real systems, the simulations have been and will be of great use in Natural Science.

Abstract:The Complex Langevin (CL) method to simulate "complex probabilities" ideally produces expectation values for the observables that converge to a limit equal to the expectation values obtained with the original complex "probability" measure. The situation may be spoiled in two ways: failure to converge and convergence to the wrong limit. It was found long ago that "wrong convergence" is caused by boundary terms; nonconvergence may arise from bad spectral properties of the various evolution operators related to the CL process. Here, we propose a class of criteria that allow one to rule out boundary terms and at the same time bad spectrum. Ruling out boundary terms in the equilibrium distribution arising from a CL simulation implies that the so-called convergence conditions are fulfilled. This in turn has been shown to guarantee that the expectation values of holomorphic observables are given by complex linear combinations of exp(−S) over various integration cycles.
