Abstract:We prove a weak comparison principle in narrow unbounded domains for solutions to $-\Delta_p u=f(u)$ in the case $2<p< 3$ and $f(\cdot)$ is a power-type nonlinearity, or in the case $p>2$ and $f(\cdot)$ is super-linear. We exploit it to prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to $-\Delta_p u=f(u)$ in half spaces (with zero Dirichlet assumption) and therefore to prove some Liouville-type theorems.

Abstract:We are concerned with fully nonlinear possibly degenerate elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) with superlinear terms with respect to $Du$. We prove several comparison principles among viscosity solutions which may be unbounded under some polynomial-type growth conditions. Our main result applies to PDEs with convex superlinear terms but we also obtain some results in nonconvex cases. Applications to monotone systems of PDEs are given.

Abstract:We consider weak solutions $u:\Omega_{T}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^{N}$ to parabolic systems of the type \[ u_{t}-\mathrm{div}\,A(x,t,Du)=f \qquad \mathrm{in}\ \Omega_{T}=\Omega\times(0,T), \] where $\Omega$ is a bounded open subset of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for $n\geq2$, $T>0$ and the datum $f$ belongs to a suitable Orlicz space. The main novelty here is that the partial map $\xi\mapsto A(x,t,\xi)$ satisfies standard $p$-growth and ellipticity conditions for $p>1$ only outside the unit ball $\{\vert\xi\vert<1\}$. For $p>\frac{2n}{n+2}$ we establish that any weak solution \[ u\in C^{0}((0,T);L^{2}(\Omega,\mathbb{R}^{N}))\cap L^{p}(0,T;W^{1,p}(\Omega,\mathbb{R}^{N})) \] admits a locally bounded spatial gradient $Du$. Moreover, assuming that $u$ is essentially bounded, we recover the same result in the case $1<p\leq\frac{2n}{n+2}$ and $f=0$. Finally, we also prove the uniqueness of weak solutions to a Cauchy-Dirichlet problem associated with the parabolic system above. We emphasize that our results include both the degenerate case $p\geq2$ and the singular case $1<p<2$.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to study very weak solutions of elliptic equation $$ -\Delta u+g(u)=2k\frac{\partial \delta_0}{\partial x_N }+j\delta_0\quad {\rm in}\quad\ \ B_1(0),\qquad u=0\quad {\rm on}\quad\ \ \partial B_1(0), $$ where $k>0$, $j\ge0$, $B_1(0)$ denotes the unit ball centered at the origin in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with $N\geq2$, $g:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ is an odd, nondecreasing and $C^1$ function, $\delta_0$ is the Dirac mass concentrated at the origin and $\frac{\partial\delta_0}{\partial x_N}$ is defined in the distribution sense that $$ \langle\frac{\partial \delta_0}{\partial x_N},\zeta\rangle=\frac{\partial\zeta(0)}{\partial x_N} , \qquad \forall \zeta\in C^1_0(B_1(0)). $$ We obtain that the above problem admits a unique very weak solution $u_{k,j}$ under the integral subcritical assumption $$\int_1^{\infty}g(s)s^{-1-\frac{N+1}{N-1}}ds<+\infty.$$ Furthermore, we prove that $u_{k,j}$ has anisotropic singularity at the origin and we consider the odd property $u_{k,0}$ and limit of $\{u_{k,0}\}_k$ as $k\to\infty$. We pose the constraint on nonlienarity $g(u)$ that we only require integrability in the principle value sense, due to the singularities only at the origin. This makes us able to search the very weak solutions in a larger scope of the nonlinearity.

Abstract:We establish interior Lipschitz regularity for continuous viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear, conformally invariant, degenerate elliptic equations. As a by-product of our method, we also prove a weak form of the strong comparison principle, which we refer to as the principle of propagation of touching points, for operators of the form $\nabla^2 \psi + L(x,\psi,\nabla \psi)$ which are non-decreasing in $\psi$.

Abstract:We prove Harnack inequality and local regularity results for weak solutions of a quasilinear degenerate equation in divergence form under natural growth conditions. The degeneracy is given by a suitable power of a strong $A_\infty$ weight. Regularity results are achieved under minimal assumptions on the coefficients and, as an application, we prove $C^{1,\alpha}$ local estimates for solutions of a degenerate equation in non divergence form.

Abstract:This work is devoted to the study of a Liouville comparison principle for entire weak solutions of quasilinear differential inequalities of the form $A(u) + |u|^{q-1}u \leq A(v) + |v|^{q-1}v$ on ${\Bbb R}^n$, where $n\geq 1$, $q$ is positive, and the operator $A(w)$ belongs to a class of the so-called $\alpha$-monotone operators. Typical examples of such operators are the $p$-Laplacian and its well-known modifications. The results improve and supplement those in [1].

Abstract:In this paper we will mainly propose some problems for a class of degenerate elliptic equations, either linear or nonlinear. We will study some special cases of these problems and reveal some phenomena which may not have been noticed previously.Our problems originated from the self-similar solutions of the heat flow of harmonic maps. We will prove that the self-similar solutions or the so-called quasi-harmonic spheres are discontinuous at infinity for the equivariant case. Abstract:Comparison estimates are an important technical device in the study of regularity problems for quasilinear possibly degenerate elliptic and parabolic equations. Such tools have been employed indispensably in many papers of Mingione, Duzaar-Mingione, and Kuusi-Mingione, etc. on certain measure datum problems to obtain pointwise bounds for solutions and their full or fractional derivatives in terms of appropriate linear or nonlinear potentials. However, a comparison estimate for $p$-Laplace type elliptic equations with measure data is still unavailable in the strongly singular case $1< p\leq \frac{3n-2}{2n-1}$, where $n\geq 2$ is the dimension of the ambient space. This issue will be completely resolved in this work by proving a comparison estimate in a slightly larger range $1<p<3/2$. Applications include a `sublinear' Poincaré type inequality, pointwise bounds for solutions and their derivatives by Wolff's and Riesz's potentials, respectively. Some global pointwise and weighted estimates are also obtained for bounded domains, which enable us to treat a quasilinear Riccati type equation with possibly sublinear growth in the gradient.

Abstract:We consider quasilinear elliptic systems in divergence form. In general, we cannot expect that weak solutions are locally bounded because of De Giorgi's counterexample. Here we assume a condition on the support of off-diagonal coefficients that "keeps away" the counterexample and allows us to prove local boundedness of weak solutions.

Abstract:We prove a new, universal gradient continuity estimate for solutions to quasilinear equations with varying coefficients at points on its critical singular set of degeneracy $S(u) := \{X : D u(X) = 0 \}$. Our main Theorem reveals that along $S(u)$, $u$ is asymptotically as regular as solutions to constant coefficient equations. In particular, along the critical set $S(u)$, $Du$ enjoys a modulus of continuity much superior than the, possibly low, continuity feature of the coefficients. Our main, leading result fosters a new understanding on smoothness properties of solutions to degenerate or singular equations, beyond typical elliptic regularity estimates, precisely where the diffusion attributes of the equation collapse.

Abstract:We carry on the investigation started in [2] about the regularity of weak solutions to the strongly degenerate parabolic equation \[ u_{t}-\mathrm{div}\left[(\vert Du\vert-1)_{+}^{p-1}\frac{Du}{\vert Du\vert}\right]=f\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\mathrm{in}\,\,\Omega_{T}=\Omega\times(0,T), \] where $\Omega$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for $n\geq2$, $p\geq2$ and $\left(\,\cdot\,\right)_{+}$ stands for the positive part. Here, we weaken the assumption on the right-hand side, by assuming that $f\in L_{loc}^{p'}\left(0,T;B_{p',\infty,loc}^{\alpha}\left(\Omega\right)\right)$, with $\alpha\in(0,1)$ and $p'=p/(p-1)$. This leads us to obtain higher fractional differentiability results for a function of the spatial gradient $Du$ of the solutions. Moreover, we establish the higher summability of $Du$ with respect to the spatial variable. The main novelty of the above equation is that the structure function satisfies standard ellipticity and growth conditions only outside the unit ball centered at the origin. We would like to point out that the main result of this paper can be considered, on the one hand, as the parabolic counterpart of an elliptic result contained in [1], and on the other hand as the fractional version of some results established in [2].

Abstract:In this article, we study a quantitative form of the Landis conjecture on exponential decay for real-valued solutions to second order elliptic equations with variable coefficients in the plane. In particular, we prove the following qualitative form of Landis conjecture, for $W_1, W_2 \in L^{\infty}(\mathbb R^2;\mathbb R^2)$, $V \in L^{\infty}(\mathbb R^2;\mathbb R)$ and $u \in H_{\mathrm{loc}}^{1}(\mathbb R^2)$ a real-valued weak solution to $-\Delta u - \nabla \cdot ( W_1 u ) +W_2 \cdot \nabla u + V u = 0$ in $\mathbb R^2$, satisfying for $\delta>0$, $|u(x)| \leq \exp(- |x|^{1+\delta})$, $x \in \mathbb R^2$, then $u \equiv 0$. Our methodology of proof is inspired by the one recently developed by Logunov, Malinnikova, Nadirashvili, and Nazarov that have treated the equation $-\Delta u + V u = 0$ in $\mathbb R^2$. Nevertheless, several differences and additional difficulties appear. New weak quantitative maximum principles are established for the construction of a positive multiplier in a suitable perforated domain, depending on the nodal set of $u$. The resulted divergence elliptic equation is then transformed into a non-homogeneous $\partial_{\overline{z}}$ equation thanks to a generalization of Stoilow factorization theorem obtained by the theory of quasiconformal mappings, an approximate type Poincaré lemma and the use of the Cauchy transform. Finally, a suitable Carleman estimate applied to the operator $\partial_{\overline{z}}$ is the last ingredient of our proof.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to establish regularity for weak solutions to the nondiagonal quasilinear degenerate elliptic systems related to Hörmander's vector fields, where the coefficients are bounded with vanishing mean oscillation. We first prove $L^p$($p \ge 2$) estimates for gradients of weak solutions by using a priori estimates and a known reverse Hölder inequality, and consider regularity to the corresponding nondiagonal homogeneous degenerate elliptic systems. Then we get higher Morrey and Campanato estimates for gradients of weak solutions to original systems and Hölder estimates for weak solutions.

A strong comparison principle for the generalized Dirichlet problem for Monge-Ampere

Abstract:We prove a strong form of the comparison principle for the elliptic Monge-Ampere equation, with a Dirichlet boundary condition interpreted in the viscosity sense. This comparison principle is valid when the equation admits a Lipschitz continuous weak solution. The result is tight, as demonstrated by examples in which the strong comparison principle fails in the absence of Lipschitz continuity. This form of comparison principle closes a significant gap in the convergence analysis of many existing numerical methods for the Monge-Ampere equation. An important corollary is that any consistent, monotone, stable approximation of the Dirichlet problem for the Monge-Ampere equation will converge to the viscosity solution.
