Abstract:This paper establishes some asymptotic results for both finite and ultimate ruin probabilities in a discrete time risk model with constant interest rates, and individual net losses in R-alpha; the class of regular variation with index alpha > 0. The individual net losses are allowed to be generally dependent while they have zero index of upper tail dependence, so that our results partially generalize the counterparts in Tang (2004). The procedure of deriving our results also demonstrates a new approach of achieving asymptotic formulation for ruin probabilities when the individual risks are dependent.

Abstract:This paper considers a two-dimensional discrete time risk model with constant interest rates, and individual net losses in ERV(−α,−β), the class of extended regular variations with indices 0<α≤β<∞. Some asymptotic results for both finite-time and infinite-time ruin probabilities under two types of ruin times are established. The two components of net losses are allowed to be generally dependent.

Abstract:In recent years, the multi-dimensional risk model is a hot topic, and it is more realistic with the Markovian environment, which can be explained as the economic condition. In this paper, we propose the two-dimensional compound binomial model in a Markovian environment. And we obtain the explicit recursive formulae for three types of finite-time survival or ruin probabilities which are of fundamental interests in risk management by the idea for first-step and last-step consideration.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider four common types of ruin probabilities for a discrete-time multivariate risk model, where the insurer is assumed to be exposed to a vector of net losses resulting from a number of business lines over each period. By assuming a large initial capital for the risk model and regularly varying distributions for the net losses, we establish some interesting asymptotic estimates for ruin probabilities in terms of the upper tail dependence function of the net loss vector. Our results insightfully characterize how the dependence structure among the individual net losses affect the ruin probabilities in an asymptotic sense, and more importantly, from our main results, explicit asymptotic estimates for those ruin probabilities can be obtained via specifying a copula for the net loss vectors. Abstract:Gambler's ruin estimates can be viewed as harmonic measure estimates for finite Markov chains which are absorbed (or killed) at boundary points. We relate such estimates to properties of the underlying chain and its Doob transform. Precisely, we show that gambler's ruin estimates reduce to a good understanding of the Perron-Frobenius eigenfunction and eigenvalue whenever the underlying chain and its Doob transform are Harnack Markov chains. Finite inner-uniform domains (say, in the square grid $\mathbb Z^n$) provide a large class of examples where these ideas apply and lead to detailed estimates. In general, understanding the behavior of the Perron-Frobenius eigenfunction remains a challenge.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, we show how expressions for the probability of ultimate ruin can be obtained from the probability function of the time of ruin in a particular compound binomial risk model, and from the density of the time of ruin in a particular Sparre Andersen risk model. In each case evaluation of generalised binomial series is required, and the argument of each series has a common form. We evaluate these series by creating an identity based on the generalised negative binomial distribution. We also show how the same ideas apply to the probability function of the number of claims in a particular Sparre Andersen model.

Abstract:In the extended gambler's ruin problem we can move one step forward or backward (classical gambler's ruin problem), we can stay where we are for a time unit (delayed action) or there can be absorption in the current state (game is terminated without reaching an absorbing barrier). We obtain absorption probabilities, probabilities for maximum and minimum values of the ruin problem, expected time until absorption and the value of the game. We also investigate asymptotic behavior of absorption probabilities and expected time until absorption. We introduce a conjugate version of our random walk.

Abstract:We study the following game. Three players start with initial capitals of $s_{1},s_{2},s_{3}$ dollars; in each round player $P_{m}$ is selected with probability $\frac{1}{3}$; then \emph{he} selects player $P_{n}$ and they play a game in which $P_{m}$ wins from (resp. loses to) $P_{n}$ one dollar with probability $p_{mn}$ (resp. $p_{nm}=1-p_{mn}$). When a player loses all his capital he drops out; the game continues until a single player wins by collecting everybody's money. This is a "strategic" version of the classical Gambler's Ruin game. It seems reasonable that a player may improve his winning probability by judicious selection of which opponent to engage in each round. We formulate the situation as a \emph{stochastic game} and prove that it has at least one Nash equilibrium in deterministic stationary strategies.

Abstract:We present here a new extended model of the gambler's ruin problem by incorporating delays in receiving of rewards and paying of penalties. When there is a difference between two delays, an exact analysis of the ruin probability is difficult. We derive an approximate scheme to find an effective shift in the initial assets of the gambler. Through comparison against computer simulations, this approximation is shown to work for small differences between the two delays.

Abstract:In Gambler's Ruin when both players start with the same amount of money, we show the playing time stochastically increases when the games are made more fair. We give two different arguments for this fact that extend results from Peköz and Ross. We then use this to show that the exit time from a symmetric interval for Brownian motion with drift stochastically increases as the drift moves closer to zero; this result is not easily obtainable from the available explicit formulas for the density.

Abstract:The theory of linear recurrence sequences is applied to obtain an explicit formula for the ultimate ruin probability in a discrete-time risk process. It is assumed that the claims distribution is arbitrary but has finite support , for some integer . The method requires finding the zeroes of an m degree polynomial and solving a system of m linear equations. An approximation is derived and some numerical results and plots are provided as examples.

If $\beta:=2a/\sigma^2-1>0$ we find exact the asymptotic upper and lower bounds for the ruin probability $\Psi(u)$ as the initial endowment $u$ tends to infinity, i.e. we show that $C_*u^{-\beta}\le\Psi(u)\le C^*u^{-\beta}$ for sufficiently large $u$. Moreover if $c_\zs{t}=c^*e^{\gamma t}$ with $\gamma\le 0$ we find the exact asymptotics of the ruin probability, namely $\Psi(u)\sim u^{-\beta}$. If $\beta\le 0$, we show that $\Psi(u)=1$ for any $u\ge 0$.

Abstract:In this paper we study the asymptotic decay of finite time ruin probabilities for an insurance company that faces heavy-tailed claims, uses predictable investment strategies and makes investments in risky assets whose prices evolve according to quite general semimartingales. We show that the ruin problem corresponds to determining hitting probabilities for the solution to a randomly perturbed stochastic integral equation. We derive a large deviation result for the hitting probabilities that holds uniformly over a family of semimartingales and show that this result gives the asymptotic decay of finite time ruin probabilities under arbitrary investment strategies, including optimal investment strategies.

Abstract:A gambler walks into a hypothetical fair casino with a very real dollar bill, but by the time he leaves he's exchanged the dollar for a random amount of money. What is lost in the process? It may be that the gambler walks out at the end of the day, after a roller-coaster ride of winning and losing, with his dollar still intact, or maybe even with two dollars. But what the gambler loses the moment he places his first bet is position. He exchanges one distribution of money for a distribution of lesser quality, from which he cannot return. Our first discussion in this work connects known results of economic inequality and majorization to the probability theory of gambling and Martingales. We provide a simple proof that fair gambles cannot increase the Lorenz curve, and we also constructively demonstrate that any sequence of non-increasing Lorenz curves corresponds to at least one Martingale. We next consider the efficiency of gambles. If all fair gambles are available then one can move down the lattice of distributions defined by the Lorenz ordering. However, the step from one distribution to the next is not unique. Is there a sense of efficiency with which one can move down the Lorenz stream? One approach would be to minimize the average total volume of money placed on the table. In this case, it turns out that implementing part of the strategy using private randomness can help reduce the need for the casino's randomness, resulting in less money on the table that the casino cannot get its hands on.

Abstract:The laws of chance are often subtle and deceptive. This is why games of chance work. People are convinced that they obey seemingly intuitive laws, while the underlying mathematical structure reveals a different and more complex reality. This article is a brief and rigorous journey through the implications that the mathematical laws governing stochastic processes have on gambling. It addresses a specific process, the random walk, and analyze some instances of fair and unfair games by highlighting the fallacy of many of our intuitions and beliefs. The paper gradually moves from the analysis of the random walk properties to a comprehensive description of the ruin problem. The introduction of the idea of transient and persistent states concludes the discussion. Much emphasis is placed on concrete examples and on the numerical values, in particular of the involved probabilities, and the interpretation of the results is always more central than the demonstrative technical details, which are nevertheless available to the reader.

Abstract:Suppose that a gambler starts with a fortune in (0,1) and wishes to attain a fortune of 1 by making a sequence of bets. Assume that whenever the gambler stakes an amount s , the gambler's fortune increases by s with probability w and decreases by s with probability 1 − w , where w < 1⁄2. Dubins and Savage showed that the optimal strategy, which they called ‘bold play’, is always to bet min{ f , 1 − f }, where f is the gambler's current fortune. Here we consider the problem in which the gambler may stake no more than l at one time. We show that the bold strategy of always betting min{l, f , 1 − f } is not optimal if l is irrational, extending a result of Heath, Pruitt, and Sudderth.
