Abstract:The Weyl-Wigner formulation of quantum confined systems poses several interesting problems. The energy stargenvalue equation, as well as the dynamical equation does not display the expected solutions. In this paper we review some previous results in the subject and add some new contributions. We reformulate the confined energy eigenvalue equation by adding to the Hamiltonian a new (distributional) boundary potential. The new Hamiltonian is proved to be globally defined and self-adjoint. Moreover, it yields the correct Weyl-Wigner formulation of the confined system.

Quantum Approach to Bound States in Field Theory

Abstract:It is well known that (possibly non-unique) suitable field dynamics can be prescribed in spacetimes with timelike boundaries by means of appropriate boundary conditions. In Ref. [J. Math. Phys. {\bf 21}, 2802 (1980)], Wald derived a conserved energy functional for each prescribed dynamics. This conserved energy is related to the positive self-adjoint extensions of the spatial part $A$ of the wave equation $\partial^2\Phi/\partial t^2=-A\Phi$ ($A$ may not be, in principle, essentially self-adjoint). This is quite surprising since the canonical energy is not conserved in these cases. In this paper, we rederive this energy functional from an action principle (with appropriate boundary terms) following Ref. [Phys. Rev. D, {\bf 69}, 085005, (2004)] and consider field dynamics arising from non-positive self-adjoint extensions of $A$. The spectrum of the resulting theory fails to be positive and unstable mode solutions for classical fields come to light. By studying fields in half-Minkowski spacetime, we illustrate that these unstable classical solutions come as a consequence of an inverted parabolic potential governing their dynamics. From the quantum mechanical point of view, this leads to an effective inverted harmonic oscillator at the boundary. We then explore these unstable modes behavior, as well as their instabilities, at the quantum level.

Abstract:It is widely believed, and axiomatically postulated in mathematical quantum field theory, that the vacuum is a unique vector state (up to a phase factor). The recent solution of the quantum Yang-Mills theory of the strong interaction revealed the presence of two vacua and a mixed quantum state. The second, confining vacuum, is an eigenstate of an auxiliary field, with a non-zero eigenvalue, as opposed to the zero eigenstate of the perturbative vacuum. Here, I show that this non-trivial vacuum structure is characteristic of confining quantum field theories, and implies confinement, in the sense that vacuum expectation values between states separated at large, space-like distances, tend to zero, whereas in ordinary quantum theories with a unique vacuum, they are known to satisfy the cluster decomposition principle, and at large separations tend to free, asymptotic states. I conclude with a discussion and some tentative comments regarding the general status, problems, and interpretation of quantum field theory for the four known interactions.

Abstract:The dynamics of classical field theories is usually governed by field equations, but when fields are constrained to bounded domains it is also dependent on its boundary conditions. Usually boundary conditions are constrained by the requirement of preserving the maximal symmetry of the system. In the case of charged particles the symmetry is U(1), but there are many fields (e,g, electromagnetic fields) which are neutral and charge conservation does not constraint its boundary conditions. In this paper we explore the most general boundary conditions that preserve another symmetry that all relativistic field theories do preserve: space-time translations. In particular the families of boundary conditions of isolated systems which preserve energy for scalar, electromagnetic and Yang-Mills field theories. We point out the global properties of the space of all possible boundary conditions of confined systems in two special domains. We also explore the connection between energy preserving and charge preserving boundary conditions.

Quantum Gravity Hamiltonian for Manifolds with Boundary

Abstract:In canonical quantum gravity, when space is a compact manifold with boundary there is a Hamiltonian given by an integral over the boundary. Here we compute the action of this `boundary Hamiltonian' on observables corresponding to open Wilson lines in the new variables formulation of quantum gravity. In cases where the boundary conditions fix the metric on the boundary (e.g., in the asymptotically Minkowskian case) one can obtain a finite result, given by a `shift operator' generating translations of the Wilson line in the direction of its tangent vector. A similar shift operator serves as the Hamiltonian constraint in Morales-Técotl and Rovelli's work on quantum gravity coupled to Weyl spinors. This suggests the appearance of an induced field theory of Weyl spinors on the boundary, analogous to that considered in Carlip's work on the statistical mechanics of the 2+1-dimensional black hole.

Abstract:A new form of quasiclassical space-time dynamics for constrained systems reveals how quantum effects can be derived systematically from canonical quantization of gravitational systems. These quasiclassical methods lead to additional fields, representing quantum fluctuations and higher moments, that are coupled to the classical metric components. The new fields describe nonadiabatic quantum dynamics and can be interpreted as implicit formulations of nonlocal quantum corrections in a field theory. This field-theory aspect is studied here for the first time, applied to a gravitational system for which a tractable model is constructed. Static solutions for the relevant fields can be obtained in almost closed form. They reveal new properties of potential near-horizon and asymptotic effects in canonical quantum gravity and demonstrate the overall consistency of the formalism. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.024006 © 2024 American Physical Society

Quantum fields in disequilibrium: neutral scalar bosons with long-range, inhomogeneous perturbations

Abstract:Using Schwinger's quantum action principle, dispersion relations are obtained for neutral scalar mesons interacting with bi-local sources. These relations are used as the basis of a method for representing the effect of interactions in the Gaussian approximation to field theory, and it is argued that a marked inhomogeneity, in space-time dependence of the sources, forces a discrete spectrum on the field. The development of such a system is characterized by features commonly associated with chaos and self-organization (localization by domain or cell formation). The Green functions play the role of an iterative map in phase space. Stable systems reside at the fixed points of the map. The present work can be applied to self-interacting theories by choosing suitable properties for the sources. Rapid transport leads to a second order phase transition and anomalous dispersion. Finally, it is shown that there is a compact representation of the non-equilibrium dynamics in terms of generalized chemical potentials, or equivalently as a pseudo-gauge theory, with an imaginary charge. This analogy shows, more clearly, how dissipation and entropy production are related to the source picture and transform a flip-flop like behaviour between two reservoirs into the Landau problem in a constant `magnetic field'. A summary of conventions and formalism is provided as a basis for future work.

Abstract:The thesis is devoted to the problem of colour confinement in the non-Abelian Yang-Mills theory (gluon part of Quantum Chromodynamics). A generalisation of the 3-dimensional Fock-Schwinger gauge is proposed where the Gauss law constraint is exactly solvable. This simplifies the theory in a finite domain and incorporates the variables at the boundary into the Hamiltonian formalism. The dependence of the partition function on the boundary value of the longitudinal component of the electric field is studied and related to the mechanism of the confinement-deconfinement transition. The free energy density is calculated for $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ gluodynamics in the mean-field approximation for the collective variables. Analysis of its minima reveals a phase transition at a certain temperature, below which the mean collective variables have nonzero values. This can be interpreted as a confinement-deconfinement phase transition. In the confinement phase the chromo-electric flux through any element of the boundary is strictly zero. This means the singletness with respect to the group of the residual gauge transformations and hence impossibility of observing coloured objects at spatial infinity (in asymptotic states). It is demonstrated that our confinement condition satisfies the traditional confinement criteria. The Wilson loop for $SU(N)$ theory is shown to satisfy the area law. The ratio of the transition temperature to the square root of the string tension coefficient is in a qualitative agreement with the result from lattice Monte Carlo simulations. In the deconfinement phase the global symmetry $Z_{N}$ (centre of $SU(N)$) is spontaneously broken by the surface terms. The confinement phase is characterised by unbroken symmetry with all nontrivial minima having the same depth and transformable by $Z_{N}$ actions.

Formalism of general boundary conditions for continuum models

Abstract:Continuum models are particularly appealing for theoretical studies of bound states, due to simplicity of their bulk Hamiltonians. The main challenge on this path is a systematic description of the boundary, which comes down to determining proper boundary conditions (BCs). BCs are a consequence of the fundamental principle of quantum mechanics: norm conservation of the wave function, which leads to the conservation of the probability current at the boundary. The notion of {\em general BCs} arises, as a family of all possible BCs that satisfy the current-conservation principle. Ahari, Ortiz, and Seradjeh formulated a systematic derivation procedure of the general BCs from the current-conservation principle for the 1D Hamiltonian of the most general form. The procedure is based on the diagonalization of the current and leads to the universal ``standardized'' form of the general BCs, parameterized in a nonredundant one-to-one way by unitary matrices. In this work, we substantiate, elucidate, and expand this {\em formalism of general boundary conditions for continuum models}, addressing in detail a number of important physical and mathematical points. We provide a detailed derivation of the general BCs from the current-conservation principle and establish the conditions for when they are admissible in the sense that they describe a well-defined boundary, which is directly related to a subtle but crucial distinction between self-adjoint (hermitian) and only symmetric operators. We provide a natural physical interpretation of the structure of the general BCs as a scattering process and an essential mathematical justification that the formalism is well-defined for Hamiltonians of momentum order higher than linear. We discuss the physical meaning of the general BCs and outline the application schemes of the formalism, in particular, for the study of bound states in topological systems.

Abstract:We present a detailed description of a quantum scalar field theory within a flat spacetime confined to a cavity with perfectly reflecting moving boundaries. Moreover, we establish an equivalence between this time-dependent setting and a field theory on an acoustic metric with static Dirichlet boundary conditions. We discuss the classical and quantum aspects of the theory from the latter perspective, accompanied by the introduction of novel numerical techniques designed for the (nonperturbative) computation of particle production attributed to the Dynamical Casimir effect, applicable to arbitrary boundary trajectories. As an illustrative example of these methodologies, we compute the particle production for a massless field in 1+1 dimensions. Notably, our approaches readily extend to encompass scenarios involving massive fields and higher dimensions

Evolution of strictly localized states in non-interacting quantum field theories with background fields

Abstract:We investigate the construction of spin-1/2 fermionic and spin-0 bosonic wave-packets having compact spatial support in the framework of a computational quantum field theory (QFT) scheme offering space-time solutions of the relativistic wave equations in background fields. In order to construct perfectly localized wave-packets, we introduce a spatial density operator accounting for particles of both positive and negative charge. We examine properties of the vacuum and single-particle expectation values of this operator and compare them to the standard QFT particle and anti-particle spatial densities. The formalism is illustrated by computing numerically the Klein tunneling dynamics of strictly localized wave-packets impinging on a supercritical electrostatic step. The density operator introduced here could be useful to model situations in which it is desirable to avoid dealing with the infinite spatial tails intrinsic to pure particle or anti-particle wave-packets.

Confinement of $N$-body systems and non-integer dimensions

Abstract:The squeezing process of a three-dimensional quantum system by use of an external deformed one-body oscillator potential can also be described by the $d$-method, without external field and where the dimension can take non-integer values. In this work we first generalize both methods to $N$ particles and any transition between dimensions below $3$. Once this is done, the use of harmonic oscillator interactions between the particles allows complete analytic solutions of both methods, and a direct comparison between them is possible. Assuming that both methods describe the same process, leading to the same ground state energy and wave function, an analytic equivalence between the methods arises. The equivalence between both methods and the validity of the derived analytic relation between them is first tested for two identical bosons and for squeezing transitions from 3 to 2 and 1 dimensions, as well as from 2 to 1 dimension. We also investigate the symmetric squeezing from 3 to 1 dimensions of a system made of three identical bosons. We have in all the cases found that the derived analytic relations between the two methods work very well. This fact permits to relate both methods also for large squeezing scenarios, where the brute force numerical calculation with the external field is too much demanding from the numerical point of view, especially for systems with more than two particles.

Abstract:The stationary states of a particle under the influence of a delta potential confined by impenetrable walls are investigated using the method of expansion in orthogonal functions. The eigenfunctions of the time-independent Schrödinger equation are expressed in closed form by using a pair of closed-form expressions for series available in the literature. The analysis encompasses both attractive and repulsive potentials with arbitrary couplings. Confinement significantly impacts the quantum states and introduces a scenario of double degeneracy including the ground state. Analysis extends to discuss the transition to unconfinement. This research holds particular significance for educators and students engaged in mathematical methods applied to physics and quantum mechanics within undergraduate courses, offering valuable insights into the complex relationships among profiles of potentials, boundary conditions, and the resulting quantum phenomena.

Abstract:Nonadiabatic dynamical processes are one of the most important quantum mechanical phenomena in chemical, materials, biological, and environmental molecular systems, where the coupling between different electronic states is either inherent in the molecular structure or induced by the (intense) external field. The curse of dimensionality indicates the intractable exponential scaling of calculation effort with system size and restricts the implementation of numerically exact approaches for realistic large systems. The phase space formulation of quantum mechanics offers an important theoretical framework for constructing practical approximate trajectory-based methods for quantum dynamics. This Account reviews our recent progress in phase space mapping theory: a unified framework for constructing the mapping Hamiltonian on phase space for coupled F-state systems where the renowned Meyer-Miller Hamiltonian model is a special case, a general phase space formulation of quantum mechanics for nonadiabatic systems where the electronic degrees of freedom are mapped onto constraint space and the nuclear degrees of freedom are mapped onto infinite space, and an isomorphism between the mapping phase space approach for nonadiabatic systems and that for nonequilibrium electron transport processes.

Hamiltonians for Quantum Systems with Contact Interactions

Abstract:We discuss the problem of constructing self-adjoint and lower bounded Hamiltonians for a system of $n>2$ non-relativistic quantum particles in dimension three with contact (or zero-range or $\delta$) interactions. Such interactions are described by (singular) boundary conditions satisfied at the coincidence hyperplanes, i.e., when the coordinates of two particles coincide. Following the line of recent works appeared in the literature, we introduce a boundary condition slightly modified with respect to usual boundary condition one has in the one-body problem. With such new boundary condition we can show that the instability property due to the fall to the center phenomenon described by Minlos and Faddeev in 1962 is avoided. Then one obtains a physically reasonable Hamiltonian for the system. We apply the method to the case of a gas of $N$ interacting bosons and to the case of $N$ distinguishable particles of equal mass $M$ interacting with a different particle. In the latter case we also discuss the limit of the model for $M \longrightarrow +\infty$. We show that in the limit one obtains the one-body Hamiltonian for the light particle subject to $N$ (non-local) point interactions placed at fixed positions. We will verify that such non-local point interactions do not exhibit the ultraviolet pathologies that are present in the case of standard local point interactions.

Abstract:We briefly review some examples of confinement which arise in condensed matter physics. We focus on two instructive cases: the off-critical Ising model in a magnetic field, and an array of weakly coupled (extended) Hubbard chains in the Wigner crystal phase. In the appropriate regime, the elementary excitations in these 1+1 and quasi-one-dimensional systems are confined into `mesons'. Although the models are generically non-integrable, quantum mechanics and form factor techniques yield valuable information.

Global derivation of the 1D Vlasov-Poisson equation from quantum many-body dynamics with screened Coulomb potential

Abstract:We study the 1D quantum many-body dynamics with a screened Coulomb potential in the mean-field setting. Combining the quantum mean-field, semiclassical, and Debye length limits, we prove the global derivation of the 1D Vlasov-Poisson equation. We tackle the difficulties brought by the pure state data, whose Wigner transforms converge to Wigner measures. We find new weighted uniform estimates around which we build the proof. As a result, we obtain, globally, stronger limits, and hence the global existence of solutions to the 1D Vlasov-Poisson equation subject to such Wigner measure data, which satisfy conservation laws of mass, momentum, and energy, despite being measure solutions. This happens to solve the 1D case of an open problem regarding the conservation law of the Vlasov-Poisson equation raised in [18] by Diperna and Lions.

Abstract:We survey the recent progress made in understanding non equilibrium dynamics in closed random systems. The emphasis is on the important role played by concepts from quantum information theory and on the application of systematic renormalization group methods to capture universal aspects of the dynamics. Finally we outline some outstanding open questions, which includee the description of the many-body localization phase transition and identifying physical systems that will allow systematic experimental study of these phenomena.

Dynamics of a quantum interacting system: Extended global approach beyond the Born-Markov and secular approximation

Abstract:In various fields from quantum physics to biology, the open quantum dynamics of a system consisting of interacting subsystems emphasizes its fundamental functionality. The local approach, deriving a dissipator in a master equation by ignoring the inter-subsystem interaction, has been widely used to describe the reduced dynamics due to its robustness to keep the positivity of a density operator. However, one critique is that a stationary state obtained by the approach in the limit of weak system-environment coupling is written in the form of the Gibbs state for the partial Hamiltonian by excluding the inter-subsystem interaction from the total one of the relevant system. As an alternative, the global approach, deriving a dissipator with including the inter-subsystem interaction, under the Born--Markov and secular approximations has attracted much attention, and there is debate concerning its violation of positivity in the short-term region and/or limited parameter region for the Bohr frequencies of the subsystems. In this study, we present a formalism that leads to the time-convolutionless (time-local) master equation obtained by extending the global approach beyond the Born-Markov and secular approximations. We apply it to the excitation energy transfer between interacting sites in which only the terminal site weakly interacts with a bosonic environment of finite temperature in a manner beyond the rotating-wave approximation. We find that the formulation (1) gives the short-time behavior while preserving positivity, (2) shows the oscillatory features that the secular approximation would obscure, and (3) leads to a stationary state very near to the Gibbs state for the total Hamiltonian of the relevant system.
