Abstract:Friedl and Kim show any taut sutured manifold can be realized as a twisted homology product, but their proof gives no practical description of how complicated the realizing representation needs to be. We give a number of results illustrating the relationship between the topology of a taut sutured handlebody and the complexity of a representation realizing it as a homology product.

Abstract:Attaching a 2-handle to a genus two or greater boundary component of a 3-manifold is a natural generalization of Dehn filling a torus boundary component. We prove that there is an interesting relationship between an essential surface in a sutured 3-manifold, the number of intersections between the boundary of the surface and one of the sutures, and the cocore of the 2-handle in the manifold after attaching a 2-handle along the suture. We use this result to show that tunnels for tunnel number one knots or links in any 3-manifold can be isotoped to lie on a branched surface corresponding to a certain taut sutured manifold hierarchy of the knot or link exterior. In a subsequent paper, we use the theorem to prove that band sums satisfy the cabling conjecture, and to give new proofs that unknotting number one knots are prime and that genus is superadditive under band sum. To prove the theorem, we introduce band taut sutured manifolds and prove the existence of band taut sutured manifold hierarchies.

Abstract:Let $\widehat{\mathcal{C}}_\mathbb{Z}$ be the group consists of manifold-knot pairs $(Y,K)$ modulo homology concordance, where $Y$ is an integer homology sphere bounding an integer homology ball, and let $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Z}$ be the subgroup consisting of pairs $(S^3,K)$. Dai-Hom-Stoffregen-Truong show that the quotient group ${\widehat{\mathcal{C}}_\mathbb{Z}}/{\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Z}}$ admits a $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$-summand. In this paper, we improve the result by showing that there exists a family $\{(Y,K_m)\}_{m>1 }$ generating the $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$-summand where $Y$ is the boundary of a smooth contractible $4$-manifold. In fact, we give a $\mathbb{Z}$-count of such families. The examples are constructed using a family of knots obtained by blowing down a component of a two-bridge link. They are studied in Jonathan Hales's thesis. Using the algorithm due to Ozsváth, Szabó and Hales we give a classification of the knot Floer homology of a larger family of such knots, that might be of independent interest.

Abstract:Suppose H is an admissible Heegaard diagram for a balanced sutured manifold (M,\gamma). We prove that the number of generators of the associated sutured Heegaard Floer complex is an upper bound on the dimension of the sutured instanton homology of (M,\gamma). It follows, in particular, that strong L-spaces are instanton L-spaces.

Abstract:We establish a framework for extending invariants of sutured manifolds to invariants of pairs of sutured manifolds who differ by attaching a basic slice along a torus boundary component. In the particular case of (bordered-)sutured Floer homology we show that this recovers the bordered-sutured Floer homology of a corresponding bordered-sutured three-manifold - though the framework is broad enough that it should be applicable in the setting of other invariants of sutured manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize the work of the second author and prove a grading shifting property, in sutured monopole and instanton Floer theories, for general balanced sutured manifolds. This result has a few consequences. First, we offer an algorithm that computes the Floer homologies of a family of sutured handle-bodies. Second, we obtain a canonical decomposition of sutured monopole and instanton Floer homologies and build polytopes for these two theories, which was initially achieved by Juhász for sutured (Heegaard) Floer homology. Third, we establish a Thurston-norm detection result for monopole and instanton knot Floer homologies, which were introduced by Kronheimer and Mrowka. The same result was originally proved by Ozsváth and Szabó for link Floer homology. Last, we generalize the construction of minus versions of monopole and instanton knot Floer homology, which was initially done for knots by the second author, to the case of links. Along with the construction of polytopes, we also proved that, for a balanced sutured manifold with vanishing second homology, the rank of the sutured monopole or instanton Floer homology bounds the depth of the balanced sutured manifold. As a corollary, we obtain an independent proof that monopole and instanton knot Floer homologies, as mentioned above, both detect fibred knots in $S^3$. This result was originally achieved by Kronheimer and Mrowka.

Abstract:We study the sutured Floer homology invariants of the sutured manifold obtained by cutting a knot complement along a Seifert surface, R. We show that these invariants are finer than the "top term" of the knot Floer homology, which they contain. In particular, we use sutured Floer homology to distinguish two non-isotopic minimal genus Seifert surfaces for the knot 8_3. A key ingredient for this technique is finding appropriate Heegaard diagrams for the sutured manifold associated to the complement of a Seifert surface.

Abstract:We produce the first examples of closed, tight contact 3-manifolds which become overtwisted after performing admissible transverse surgeries. Along the way, we clarify the relationship between admissible transverse surgery and Legendrian surgery. We use this clarification to study a new invariant of transverse knots - namely, the range of slopes on which admissible transverse surgery preserves tightness - and to provide some new examples of knot types which are not uniformly thick. Our examples also illuminate several interesting new phenomena, including the existence of hyperbolic, universally tight contact 3-manifolds whose Heegaard Floer contact invariants vanish (and which are not weakly fillable); and the existence of open books with arbitrarily high fractional Dehn twist coefficients whose compatible contact structures are not deformations of co-orientable taut foliations.

Abstract:Extending Haken's Theorem to product annuli and disks for Heegaard splittings of sutured manifolds, we show that the handle number of an irreducible sutured manifold equals the handle number of its guts. We further show that reduced sutured manifolds with torus boundary contained in $S^3$ fall in to three types that generalize the three models of guts of knots that are nearly fibered in the instanton or Heegaard Floer sense. In conjunction with these results and another concerning uniqueness of incompressible Seifert surfaces, we show that while many nearly fibered knots have handle number $2$ and a unique incompressible Seifert surface, some have handle number $4$ and others have extra incompressible Seifert surfaces. Examples of nearly fibered knots with non-isotopic incompressible Seifert surfaces are exhibited.

Abstract:We define a sutured cobordism category of surfaces with boundary and 3-manifolds with corners. In this category a sutured 3-manifold is regarded as a morphism from the empty surface to itself. In the process we define a new class of geometric objects, called bordered sutured manifolds, that generalize both sutured 3-manifolds and bordered 3-manifolds. We extend the definition of bordered Floer homology to these objects, giving a functor from a decorated version of the sutured category to A-infinity algebras, and A-infinity bimodules. As an application we give a way to recover the sutured homology SFH(Y,Gamma) of a sutured manifold from either of the bordered invariants CFA(Y) and CFD(Y) of its underlying manifold Y. A further application is a new proof of the surface decomposition formula of Juhasz.

Abstract:This is a companion paper to an earlier work of the authors. In this paper, we provide an axiomatic definition of Floer homology for balanced sutured manifolds and prove that the graded Euler characteristic $\chi_{\rm gr}$ of this homology is fully determined by the axioms we proposed. As a result, we conclude that $\chi_{\rm gr}(SHI(M,\gamma))=\chi_{\rm gr}(SFH(M,\gamma))$ for any balanced sutured manifold $(M,\gamma)$. In particular, for any link $L$ in $S^3$, the Euler characteristic $\chi_{\rm gr}(KHI(S^3,L))$ recovers the multi-variable Alexander polynomial of $L$, which generalizes the knot case. Combined with the authors' earlier work, we provide more examples of $(1,1)$-knots in lens spaces whose $KHI$ and $\widehat{HFK}$ have the same dimension. Moreover, for a rationally null-homologous knot in a closed oriented 3-manifold $Y$, we construct canonical $\mathbb{Z}_2$-gradings on $KHI(Y,K)$, the decomposition of $I^\sharp(Y)$ discussed in the previous paper, and the minus version of instanton knot homology $\underline{\rm KHI}^-(Y,K)$ introduced by the first author.

Abstract:We exhibit the first example of a knot in the three-sphere with a pair of minimal genus Seifert surfaces that can be distinguished using the sutured Floer homology of their complementary manifolds together with the Spin^c-grading. This answers a question of Juhász. More precisely, we show that the Euler characteristic of the sutured Floer homology of the complementary manifolds distinguishes between the two surfaces, as does the sutured Floer polytope introduced by Juhász. Actually, we exhibit an infinite family of knots with pairs of Seifert surfaces that can be distinguished by the Euler characteristic.

Abstract:We execute Avdek's algorithm to find many algebraically overtwisted and tight $3$-manifolds by contact $+1$ surgeries. In particular, we show that a contact $1/k$ surgery on the standard contact $3$-sphere along any positive torus knot with the maximum Thurston-Bennequin invariant yields an algebraically overtwisted and tight $3$-manifold, where $k$ is a positive integer.

Abstract:We use the theory of sutured TQFT to classify contact elements in the sutured Floer homology, with $\Z$ coefficients, of certain sutured manifolds of the form $(\Sigma \times S^1, F \times S^1)$ where $\Sigma$ is an annulus or punctured torus. Using this classification, we give a new proof that the contact invariant in sutured Floer homology with $\Z$ coefficients of a contact structure with Giroux torsion vanishes. We also give a new proof of Massot's theorem that the contact invariant vanishes for a contact structure on $(\Sigma \times S^1, F \times S^1)$ described by an isolating dividing set.

Abstract:Given a manifold with boundary, one can consider the space of subsurfaces of this manifold meeting the boundary in a prescribed fashion. It is known that these spaces of subsurfaces satisfy homological stability if the manifold has at least dimension five and is simply-connected. We introduce a notion of tangential structure for subsurfaces and give a general criterion for when the space of subsurfaces with tangential structure satisfies homological stability provided that the manifold is simply-connected and has dimension $n\geq 5$. Examples of tangential structures such that the spaces of subsurface with that tangential structure satisfy homological stability are framings or spin structures of their tangent bundle, or $k$-frames of the normal bundle provided that $k\leq n-2$. Furthermore we introduce spaces of pointedly embedded subsurfaces and construct stabilization maps, as well as prove homological stability for these. This is used to prove homological stability for spaces of symplectic subsurfaces.

Abstract:We construct a Poincaré complex whose periodic total surgery obstruction vanishes but whose Spivak normal fibration does not admit a reduction to a stable euclidean bundle. This contradicts the conjunction of two claims in the literature: Namely, on the one hand that a Poincaré complex with vanishing periodic total surgery obstruction is homotopy equivalent to a homology manifold, which appears in work of Bryant--Ferry--Mio--Weinberger, and on the other that the Spivak normal fibration of a homology manifold always admits a reduction to a stable euclidean bundle, which appears in work of Ferry--Pedersen.
