Abstract:In this paper, we introduce notions of nonlinear stabilities for a relative ample line bundle over a holomorphic fibration and define the notion of a geodesic-Einstein metric on this line bundle, which generalize the classical stabilities and Hermitian-Einstein metrics of holomorphic vector bundles. We introduce a Donaldson type functional and show that this functional attains its absolute minimum at geodesic-Einstein metrics, and we also discuss the relations between the existence of geodesic-Einstein metrics and the nonlinear stabilities of the line bundle. As an application, we will prove that a holomorphic vector bundle admits a Finsler-Einstein metric if and only if it admits a Hermitian-Einstein metric, which answers a problem posed by S. Kobayashi.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the “interpolation–degeneration” strategy to study Kähler–Einstein metrics on a smooth Fano manifold with cone singularities along a smooth divisor that is proportional to the anti-canonical divisor. By “interpolation” we show the angles in (0, 2π] that admit a conical Kähler–Einstein metric form a connected interval, and by “degeneration” we determine the boundary of the interval in some important cases. As a first application, we show that there exists a Kähler–Einstein metric on ${\mathbb{P}^2}$ with cone singularity along a smooth conic (degree 2) curve if and only if the angle is in (π/2, 2π]. When the angle is 2π/3 this proves the existence of a Sasaki–Einstein metric on the link of a three dimensional A 2 singularity, and thus answers a question posed by Gauntlett–Martelli–Sparks–Yau. As a second application we prove a version of Donaldson’s conjecture about conical Kähler–Einstein metrics in the toric case using Song–Wang’s recent existence result of toric invariant conical Kähler–Einstein metrics.

Abstract:Drawing on results of Derdziński's from the 80's, we classify conformally Kähler, $U(2)$-invariant, Einstein metrics on the total space of $\mathcal{O}(-m)$, for all $m \in \mathbb{N}$. This yields infinitely many $1$-parameter families of metrics exhibiting several different behaviours including asymptotically hyperbolic metrics (more specifically of Poincaré type), ALF metrics, and metrics which compactify to a Hirzebruch surface $\mathbb{H}_m$ with a cone singularity along the "divisor at infinity". This allows us to investigate transitions between behaviours yielding interesting results. For instance, we show that a Ricci--flat ALF metric known as the Taub-bolt metric can be obtained as the limit of a family of cone angle Einstein metrics on $\mathbb{CP}^2 \# \overline{\mathbb{CP}}^2$ when the cone angle converges to zero.

Abstract:We show that the boundary of a projectively compact Einstein manifold of dimension n can be extended by a line bundle naturally constructed from the projective compactification. This extended boundary is such that its automorphisms can be identified with asymptotic symmetries of the compactification. The construction is motivated by the investigation of a new curved orbit decomposition for a n + 1 dimensional manifold which we prove results in a line bundle over projectively compact order one Einstein manifolds. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue ‘At the interface of asymptotics, conformal methods and analysis in general relativity’.

Abstract:In this expository article we review the problem of finding Einstein metrics on compact K\"ahler manifolds and Sasaki manifolds. In the former half of this article we see that, in the K\"ahler case, the problem fits better with the notion of stability in Geometric Invariant Theory if we extend the problem to that of finding extremal K\"ahler metrics or constant scalar curvature K\"ahler (cscK) metrics. In the latter half of this paper we see that most of ideas in K\"ahler geometry extend to Sasaki geometry as transverse K\"ahler geometry. We also summarize recent results about the existence of toric Sasaki-Einstein metrics.
Exotic Spheres' Metrics and Solutions via Kaluza-Klein Techniques

Abstract:By applying an inverse Kaluza-Klein procedure, we provide explicit coordinate expressions for Riemannian metrics on two homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic spheres in seven dimensions. We identify Milnor's bundles, among which ten out of the fourteen exotic seven-spheres appear (ignoring orientation), with non-principal bundles having homogeneous fibres. Then, we use the techniques in \cite{<a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1063/1.525753" href="https://doi.org/10.1063/1.525753" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1063/1.525753</a>} to obtain a general ansatz for the coordinate expression of a metric on the total space of any Milnor's bundle. The ansatz is given in terms of a metric on $S^4$, a metric on $S^3$ (which can smoothly vary throughout $S^4$), and a connection on the principal $SO(4)$-bundle over $S^4$. As a concrete example, we present explicit formulae for such metrics for the ordinary sphere and the Gromoll-Meyer exotic sphere. Then, we perform a non-abelian Kaluza-Klein reduction to gravity in seven dimensions, according to (a slightly simplified version of) the metric ansatz above. We obtain the standard four-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills system, for which we find solutions associated with the geometries of the ordinary sphere and of the exotic one. The two differ by the winding numbers of the instantons involved.

In the first place, we establish the existence of "estimable" Hermite--Einstein metrics for stable reflexive coherent sheaves on compact normal Kähler spaces. If moreover the background variety has klt singularities, we obtain a much more precise result.

Abstract:This paper initiates the study of the Einstein equation on homogeneous supermanifolds. First, we produce explicit curvature formulas for graded Riemannian metrics on these spaces. Next, we present a construction of homogeneous supermanifolds by means of Dynkin diagrams, resembling the construction of generalised flag manifolds in classical (non-super) theory. We describe the Einstein metrics on several classes of spaces obtained through this approach. Our results provide examples of compact homogeneous supermanifolds on which the Einstein equation has no solutions, discrete families of solutions, and continuous families of Ricci-flat solutions among invariant metrics. These examples demonstrate that the finiteness conjecture from classical homogeneous geometry fails on supermanifolds, and challenge the intuition furnished by Bochner's vanishing theorem.

Abstract:We study the existence of projectable $G$-invariant Einstein metrics on the total space of $G$-equivariant fibrations $M=G/L\to G/K$, for a compact connected semisimple Lie group $G$. We obtain necessary conditions for the existence of such Einstein metrics in terms of appropriate Casimir operators, which is a generalization of the result by Wang and Ziller about Einstein normal metrics. We describe binormal Einstein metrics which are the orthogonal sum of the normal metrics on the fiber and on the base. The special case when the restriction to the fiber and the projection to the base are also Einstein is also considered. As an application, we prove the existence of a non-standard Einstein invariant metric on the Kowalski $n$-symmetric spaces.

Bismut Einstein metrics on compact complex manifolds

Abstract:We observe that, for a Bismut Einstein metric, the (2,0)-part of Bismut Ricci form is an eigenvector of the Chern Laplacian. With the help of this observation, we prove that a Bismut Einstein metric with non-zero Einstein constant is Kähler Einstein. Additionally, for Bismut Einstein metrics with zero Einstein constant, we prove that they are actually Bismut Ricci flat.

Abstract:A construction of Kaehler-Einstein metrics using Galois coverings, studied by Arezzo-Ghigi-Pirola, is generalized to orbifolds. By applying it to certain orbifold covers of P^n which are trivial set theoretically, one obtains new Einstein metrics on odd-dimensional spheres. The method also gives Kaehler-Einstein metrics on degree 2 Del Pezzo surfaces with A_1 or A_2-singularities.

Abstract:We construct all axi-symmetric non-gradient $m$-quasi-Einstein structures on a two-sphere. This includes the spatial cross-section of the extreme Kerr black hole horizon corresponding to $m=2$, as well as a family of new regular metrics with $m\neq 2$ given in terms of hypergeometric functions. We also show that in the case $m=-1$ with vanishing cosmological constant the only orientable compact solution in dimension two is the flat torus, which proves that there are no compact surfaces with a metrisable affine connection with skew Ricci tensor.

Integrability of Einstein deformations and desingularizations

Abstract:We study the question of the integrability of Einstein deformations and relate it to the question of the desingularization of Einstein metrics. Our main application is a negative answer to the long-standing question of whether or not every Einstein $4$-orbifold (which is an Einstein metric space in a synthetic sense) is limit of smooth Einstein $4$-manifolds. We more precisely show that spherical and hyperbolic $4$-orbifolds with the simplest singularities cannot be Gromov-Hausdorff limits of smooth Einstein $4$-metrics without relying on previous integrability assumptions. For this, we analyze the integrability of deformations of Ricci-flat ALE metrics through variations of Schoen's Pohozaev identity. Inspired by Taub's preserved quantity in General Relativity, we also introduce preserved integral quantities based on the symmetries of Einstein metrics. These quantities are obstructions to the integrability of infinitesimal Einstein deformations "closing up" inside a hypersurface - even with change of topology. We show that many previously identified obstructions to the desingularization of Einstein $4$-metrics are equivalent to these quantities on Ricci-flat cones. In particular, all of the obstructions to desingularizations bubbling out Eguchi-Hanson metrics are recovered. This lets us further interpret the obstructions to the desingularization of Einstein metrics as a defect of integrability.

The local moduli space of the Einstein-Yang-Mills system

Abstract:We study the deformation theory of the Einstein-Yang-Mills system on a principal bundle with a compact structure group over a compact manifold. We first construct, as an application of the general slice theorem of Diez and Rudolph, a smooth slice in the tame Fréchet category for the coupled action of bundle automorphisms on metrics and connections. Using this result, together with a careful analysis of the linearization of the Einstein-Yang-Mills system, we realize the moduli space of Einstein-Yang-Mills pairs modulo automorphism as an analytic set in a finite-dimensional tame Fréchet manifold, extending classical results of Koiso for Einstein metrics and Yang-Mills connections to the Einstein-Yang-Mills system. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of \emph{essential deformation} of an Einstein-Yang-Mills pair, which we characterize in full generality and explore in more detail in the four-dimensional case, proving a decoupling result for trace deformations when the underlying Einstein-Yang-Mills pair is a Ricci-flat metric coupled to an anti-self-dual instanton. In particular, we find a novel obstruction that does not occur in the separate Einstein or Yang-Mills moduli problems. Finally, we prove that every essential deformation of the four-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills system based on a Calabi-Yau metric coupled to an instanton is of restricted type. Notable examples of Einstein-Yang-Mills pairs include $\mathrm{G}_2$ or $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$ holonomy metrics coupled to $\mathrm{G}_2$ or $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$ instantons, respectively, or zero-slope polystable holomorphic vector bundles on Calabi-Yau manifolds.

Abstract:We extend Tsuji's iterative construction of a Kähler--Einstein metric with negative scalar curvature to (non-compact) Kähler manifolds with bounded geometry, using Berndtsson's method for the compact setting. Consequently, given a holomorphic surjective map $p:X \to Y$, where $X$ is a weakly pseudoconvex Kähler manifold and $Y$ is a complex manifold, whose smooth fibers admit Kähler--Einstein metrics with negative scalar curvature and bounded geometry, we show that the fiberwise Kähler--Einstein metric induces a semi-positively curved metric on the relative canonical bundle $K_{X/Y}$ of $p$. Moreover, our approach can be applied to obtain the plurisubharmonic variation of cusp Kähler--Einstein metrics.
