Abstract:Recently a new class of continued fraction algorithms, the )-expansions, was introduced in Kraaikamp and Langeveld (J Math Anal Appl 454(1):106–126, 2017) for each , and . Each of these continued fraction algorithms has only finitely many possible digits. These -expansions 'behave' very different from many other (classical) continued fraction algorithms; see also Chen and Kraaikamp (Matching of orbits of certain n -expansions with a finite set of digits (2022). To appear in Tohoku Math. J arXiv:2209.08882), de Jonge and Kraaikamp (Integers 23:17, 2023), de Jonge et al. (Monatsh Math 198(1):79–119, 2022), Nakada (Tokyo J Math 4(2):399–426, 1981) for examples and results. In this paper we will show that when all digits in the digit set are co-prime with N , which occurs in specified intervals of the parameter space, something extraordinary happens. Rational numbers and certain quadratic irrationals will not have a periodic expansion. Furthermore, there are no matching intervals in these regions. This contrasts sharply with the regular continued fraction and more classical parameterised continued fraction algorithms, for which often matching is shown to hold for almost every parameter. On the other hand, for small enough, all rationals have an eventually periodic expansion with period 1. This happens for all when . We also find infinitely many matching intervals for , as well as rationals that are not contained in any matching interval.

Abstract:In this paper we study periodic continued radicals of 2. We show that any periodic continued radicals of 2 converges to 2sin(q\pi), for some rational number q depends on the continued radical. Furthermore we show that if r_n is a periodic nested radicals of 2, which has n nested roots, then the limit points of the sequence 2^n(2sin(q\pi)-r_n) have the form \alpha\pi, where \alpha is an algebraic number. This result give a set of sub sequences converges to \alpha\pi, for each \alpha . Also we show that limit of these sub sequences can be represented as Vieta like nested radical products. Hence this result generalizes the Vieta product for \pi. Several interesting examples are illustrated.

The setting is the class of algebras introduced by Puczy lowski which ensures the results hold in groups, multi-operator groups such as rings, as well as loops and hoops.

Abstract:We treat three recurrences involving square roots, the first of which arises from an infinite simple radical expansion for the Golden mean, whose precise convergence rate was made famous by Richard Bruce Paris in 1987. A never-before-seen proof of an important formula is given. The other recurrences are non-exponential yet equally interesting. Asymptotic series developed for each of these two examples feature a constant, dependent on the initial condition but otherwise intrinsic to the function at hand.

Abstract:In this article, we derive lower bounds for the number of distinct prime divisors of families of non-zero Fourier coefficients of non-CM primitive cusp forms and more generally of non-CM primitive Hilbert cusp forms. In particular, for the Ramanujan $\Delta$-function, we show that for any $\epsilon > 0$, there exist infinitely many natural numbers $n$ such that $\tau(p^n)$ has at least $$ 2^{(1-\epsilon) \frac{\log n}{\log\log n}} $$ distinct prime factors for almost all primes $p$. This improves and refines the existing bounds. We also study lower bounds for absolute norms of radicals of non-zero Fourier coefficients of Modular forms alluded to above.

On Convergents of Proper Continued Fractions

Abstract:Proper continued fractions are generalized continued fractions with positive integer numerators $a_i$ and integer denominators with $b_i\geq a_i$. In this paper we study the strength of approximation of irrational numbers to their convergents and classify which pairs of integers $p,q$ yield a convergent $p/q$ to some irrational $x$. Notably, we reduce the problem to finding convergence only of index one and two. We completely classify the possible choices for convergents of odd index and provide a near-complete classification for even index. We furthermore propose a natural two-dimensional generalization of the classical Gauss map as a method for dynamically generating all possible expansions and establish ergodicity of this map.

Abstract:Let sigma = {sigma (i) | i is an element of I} be a fixed partition of the set of all primes into pairwise disjoint nonempty subsets sigma (i). A finite group is called sigma -nilpotent if it has a normal sigma (i) -Hall subgroup for any i is an element of I. Any finite group possesses a sigma -nilpotent radical, which is the largest normal sigma -nilpotent subgroup. In this note, it is proved that there exists an integer m = m(sigma ) such that the sigma -nilpotent radical of any finite group coincides with the set of elements x such that any m conjugates of x generate a sigma -nilpotent subgroup. Other possible analogs of the classical Baer-Suzuki theorem are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we pursue three aims. The first one is to apply Amitsur's relations and radicals theory to the study of the lattices of closed two-sided ideals of C*-algebras A . We show that many new and many well-known results about C*-algebras follow naturally from this approach. Real convergence and periodicity of $p$-adic continued fractions

Abstract:Continued fractions have been generalized over the field of $p$-adic numbers, where it is still not known an analogue of the famous Lagrange's Theorem. In general, the periodicity of $p$-adic continued fractions is well studied and addressed as a hard problem. In this paper, we show a strong connection between periodic $p$--adic continued fractions and the convergence to real quadratic irrationals. In particular, in the first part we prove that the convergence in $\mathbb{R}$ is a necessary condition for the periodicity of the continued fractions of a quadratic irrational in $\mathbb{Q}_p$. Moreover, we leave several conjectures on the converse, supported by experimental computations. In the second part of the paper, we exploit these results to develop a probabilistic argument for the non-periodicity of Browkin's $p$-adic continued fractions. The probabilistic results are conditioned under the assumption of uniform distribution of the $p$-adic digits of a quadratic irrational, that holds for almost all $p$-adic numbers.

Abstract:We solve the isomorphism problem for essential unital $C^*$-algebra extensions of the form $0 \to \mathcal{K} \oplus \mathcal{K} \to E \xrightarrow{\pi} M_n \otimes C(\mathbb{T}) \to 0$. We then relate these to analogs of the Effros Shen AF algebras for rational numbers. This involves $C^*$-algebras constructed from categories of paths built from certain nonsimple continued fraction expansions.

Abstract:Multidimensional continued fractions generalize classical continued fractions with the aim of providing periodic representations of algebraic irrationalities by means of integer sequences. However, there does not exist any algorithm that provides a periodic multidimensional continued fraction when algebraic irrationalities are given as inputs. In this paper, we provide a characterization for periodicity of Jacobi--Perron algorithm by means of linear recurrence sequences. In particular, we prove that partial quotients of a multidimensional continued fraction are periodic if and only if numerators and denominators of convergents are linear recurrence sequences, generalizing similar results that hold for classical continued fractions.

Abstract:We give an exponential upper bound on the probabilitywith which the denominator of the $n$th convergent in the regular continued fraction expansion stays away from the mean $\frac{n\pi^2}{12\log2}$. The exponential rate is best possible, given by an analytic function related to the dimension spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for the Gauss transformation.

Abstract:We define an equivalence relation on periodic continued fractions with partial quotients in a ring $\mathcal{O} \subseteq \mathbf{C}$, a group law on these equivalence classes, and a map from these equivalence classes to matrices in $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathcal{O})$ with determinant $\pm1$. We prove this group of equivalence classes is isomorphic to $\mathbf{Z}/2\mathbf{Z}\ast\mathcal{O}$ and study certain of its one- and two-dimensional representations. For a periodic continued fraction with period $k$, we give a refined description of the limits of the $k$ different $k$-decimations of its sequence of convergents. We show that for a periodic continued fraction associated to a matrix with eigenvalues of different magnitudes, all $k$ of these limits exist in $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbf{C})$ and a strict majority of them are equal.

Abstract:We show that for each positive integer $a$ there exist only finitely many prime numbers $p$ such that $a$ appears an odd number of times in the period of continued fraction of $\sqrt{p}$ or $\sqrt{2p}$. We also prove that if $p$ is a prime number and $D=p$ or $2p$ is such that the length of the period of continued fraction expansion of $\sqrt{D}$ is divisible by $4$, then $1$ appears as a partial quotient in the continued fraction of $\sqrt{D}$. Furthermore, we give an upper bound for the period length of continued fraction expansion of $\sqrt{D}$, where $D$ is a positive non-square, and factorize some family of polynomials with integral coefficients connected with continued fractions of square roots of positive integers. These results answer several questions recently posed by Miska and Ulas.

Abstract:Special kinds of continued fractions have been proved to converge to transcendental real numbers by means of the celebrated Subspace Theorem. In this paper we study the analogous $p$--adic problem. More specifically, we deal with Browkin $p$--adic continued fractions. First we give some new remarks about the Browkin algorithm in terms of a $p$--adic Euclidean algorithm. Then, we focus on the heights of some $p$--adic numbers having a periodic $p$--adic continued fraction expansion and we obtain some upper bounds. Finally, we exploit these results, together with $p$--adic Roth-like results, in order to prove the transcendence of two families of $p$--adic continued fractions.

Abstract:In this paper, we will first summarize known results concerning continued fractions. Then we will limit our consideration to continued fractions of quadratic numbers. The second author described periods and sometimes precise form of continued fractions of $\sqrt{N}$, where $N$ is a natural number. In cases where we were able to find such results in literature, we recall the original authors, however many results seem to be new.

Abstract:We consider a conservative ergodic measure-preserving transformation $T$ of the measure space $(X,\mathcal{B},\mu)$ with $\mu$ a $\sigma$-finite measure and $\mu(X)=\infty$. Given an observable $g:X\to \mathbb{R}$, it is well known from results by Aaronson that in general the asymptotic behaviour of the Birkhoff sums $S_Ng(x):= \sum_{j=1}^N\, (g\circ T^{j-1})(x)$ strongly depends on the point $x\in X$, and that there exists no sequence $(d_N)$ for which $S_Ng(x)/d_N \to 1$ for $\mu$-almost every $x\in X$. In this paper we consider the case $g\not\in L^1(X,\mu)$ assuming that there exists $E\in\mathcal{B}$ with $\mu(E)<\infty$ and $\int_E g\,\mathrm{d}\mu=\infty$ and continue the investigation initiated in previous work by the authors. We show that for transformations $T$ with strong mixing assumptions for the induced map on a finite measure set, the almost sure asymptotic behaviour of $S_Ng(x)$ for an unbounded observable $g$ may be obtained using two methods, adding a number of summands depending on $x$ to $S_Ng$ and trimming. The obtained sums are then asymptotic to a scalar multiple of $N$. The results are applied to a couple of non-regular continued fraction algorithms, the backward (or Rényi type) continued fraction and the even-integer continued fraction algorithms, to obtain the almost sure asymptotic behaviour of the sums of the digits of the algorithms.
