Abstract:Only low-order information of process data (i.e., mean, variance, and covariance) was considered in the principal component analysis (PCA)-based process monitoring method. Consequently, it cannot deal with continuous processes with strong dynamics, nonlinearity, and non-Gaussianity. To this aim, the statistics pattern analysis (SPA)-based process monitoring method achieves better monitoring results by extracting higher-order statistics (HOS) of the process variables. However, the extracted statistics do not strictly follow a Gaussian distribution, making the estimated control limits in Hotelling-T 2 and squared prediction error (SPE) charts inaccurate, resulting in unsatisfactory monitoring performance. In order to solve this problem, this paper presents a novel process monitoring method using SPA and the k-nearest neighbor algorithm. In the proposed method, first, the statistics of process variables are calculated through SPA. Then, the k-nearest neighbor (kNN) method is used to monitor the extracted statistics. The kNN method only uses the paired distance of samples to perform fault detection. It has no strict requirements for data distribution. Hence, the proposed method can overcome the problems caused by the non-Gaussianity and nonlinearity of statistics. In addition, the potential of the proposed method in early fault detection or safety alarm and fault isolation is explored. The proposed method can isolate which variable or its statistic is faulty. Finally, the numerical examples and Tennessee Eastman benchmark process illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:The development and application of multivariate statistical techniques in process monitoring has gained substantial interest over the past two decades in academia and industry alike. Initially developed for monitoring and fault diagnosis in complex systems, such techniques have been refined and applied in various engineering areas, for example mechanical and manufacturing, chemical, electrical and electronic, and power engineering. The recipe for the tremendous interest in multivariate statistical techniques lies in its simplicity and adaptability for developing monitoring applications. In contrast, competitive model, signal or knowledge based techniques showed their potential only whenever cost-benefit economics have justified the required effort in developing applications.

Abstract:A new method based on multivariate statistical signal processing was presented for a large number of batch process in modern chemical industry,which divides the process information space into three subspace: subspace described by blind source signals,subspace described by principal components and subspace of residual information.Then corresponding control limits or operating features classifiers were built to monitor the process.The feasibility of this method was investigated by applying it to a batch process,and the results show that this method can:1)not only detect process faults in time,but also confirm the source of faults exactly;2)extract or model process features much more simply in each subspace than in whole process information space and 3)overcome the limitation of the assumption in conventional multivariate statistical process control(MSPC) that the separated latent variables must be subjected to normal probability distribution.

Abstract:Multivariate statistical process control (MSPC) has been successfully applied to performance monitoring and fault diagnosis for chemical processes. However, classical methods of MSPC are based on the premise that the separated latent variable must be subjected to normal distribution, which sometimes can't be satisfied. In this paper, a new method based on independent component analysis OCA) whose goal is to find a line representation of nomgaussian data to depict the chemical process and improve the monitoring performance of the system is presented. Due to the uncertainty of the probability distribution of the independent component, the paper devises a kind of classifier with Parzen density estimation for classifjring the normal data and fault data. Then the nonisothemal CSTR is monitored and diagnosed by the present method, the simulation result verifies the effectiveness of ICA-based monitoring method.

Abstract:A new sensor fault diagnosis method based on structured kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) is proposed for nonlinear processes. By performing KPCA on subsets of variables, a set of structured residuals, i.e., scaled powers of KPCA, can be obtained in the same way as partial PCA. The structured residuals are utilized in composing an isolation scheme for sensor fault diagnosis, according to a properly designed incidence matrix. Sensor fault sensitivity and critical sensitivity are defined, based on which an incidence matrix optimization algorithm is proposed to improve the performance of the structured KPCA. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated on the simulated continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) process.

Abstract:Multivariate statistical process control (MSPC) has been applied to performance monitoring for chemical process. However, conventional methods of MSPC are based on the premise that the extracted latent variables must be subjected to normal distribution, which often can't be satisfied. In this paper, a new method based on independent component analysis (ICA) and principal component analysis (PCA) is presented for process performance monitoring, in which a two-step procedure is employed. At first step, process operating information with non-normal distribution is extracted by means of ICA, and the density function of this part of information is estimated by means of parzen density estimator for calculating the confidence limits. At the second step, the information with normal distribution is extracted from the underlying residual data sets by PCA, and the confidence limits are determined on Q and hotelling T2 statistics. With the primary advantage of which no assumption of normal distribution on process data sets is needed, the proposed method is applied to a double-effect evaporator, and the simulation results verify it effective.

Abstract:For the actual blast furnace ironmaking process (BFIP), sophisticated dynamic, nonlinear, and nonstationary characteristics make it hard to be modeled accurately with conventional monitoring methods. In this article, local dynamic broad kernel stationary subspace analysis (local-DBKSSA) is developed to improve the monitoring performance. Faced with complex dynamic nonlinear characteristics, a single model is considered to be unable for accurate representation. Thus, dynamic broad nonlinear features established by time shift and multikernel projection are adopted from more perspectives. Subsequently, the above features are integrated into stationary subspace analysis (SSA) to estimate stationary projections from time-varying data. In order to reduce the impact of large fluctuations and improve fault detection capability, a local statistic is further proposed. The effects of nonstationary characteristic on monitoring capability and the excellent performance of the local statistic are also theoretically analyzed. Finally, a case study based on actual BFIP data presents that the proposed method can discriminate between normal and sample faults more accurately and timely, and has better robustness to nonstationary perturbations under normal conditions by providing fewer false alarms.

Abstract:In multivariate statistical process control(MSPC),fault detection,fault identification and fault isolation are challenging problems.An integrated novel MSPC method was proposed by combining multivariate feature extraction with three SVM-based methods commonly used in one-class classifier design,key feature selection and multi-class classifier design,respectively.In this method it was able to calculate control limits of multiple statistics for fault detection simultaneously without conventional theoretical distribution assumptions,and to determine the key variables for fault identification based on both their magnitude changes and their contributions to fault classification in residual space which improves the identification accuracy,and fault isolation was implemented by taking advantage of the wellknown properties of SVM-based multi-class classifier which avoids introducing specific discriminant criteria.Using principal component analysis(PCA) as feature extraction method,the SVM-based MSPC method was demonstrated by application to a benchmark simulator Tennessee Eastman process.The results showed the advantages.

Abstract:Broad learning system (BLS), a tri-layer feedforward neural network, has gained widespread recognition for its exceptional scalability and computational efficiency. However, BLS and its derivatives encounter several challenges: 1) overlooking the uncertainty introduced by numerous nonlinear random mappings; 2) failing to cope with the misalignment of model inputs with the output sampling rate; 3) lack of attention to nonstationary scenarios; and 4) absence of theoretical optimization for incremental learning. To overcome these obstacles, we propose a regression modeling and anomaly detection scheme rooted in a temporal kernel stationary BLS (TKS-BLS). We first create a nonlinear kernel broad representation (NKBR) extraction strategy, providing a robust nonlinear foundation for random feature mapping via kernel technology. Following this, we probe the mechanism of temporal matching between model inputs and outputs through a temporal alignment parameter, interpretable under a latent variable relationship. In the integration phase, we establish a Kullback–Leibler divergence objective function to facilitate the capture of stationary relationships within time-series data, in conjunction with the regression error. Subsequently, a double-loop parameter optimization algorithm and an independent incremental learning mechanism are put forth, both backed by comprehensive theoretical analyses. Our method’s superiority is thoroughly confirmed by experimental outcomes from extensive case studies across seven real ironmaking process datasets.

Abstract:AbstractIn this paper, a general kernel density estimator has been introduced and discussed for multivariate processes in order to provide enhanced real‐time performance monitoring. The proposed approach is based upon the concept of kernel density function, which is more appropriate to the underlying probability distribution of industrial process data in the development of a real‐time monitoring scheme, to overcome the limitations of the conventional approach of defining the normal operating region based upon the assumption of normality. An optimal bandwidth selection rule is given based on the so‐called mean integrated squared error index, and that is the normal operating region of process calculated using the optimal kernel density estimator before new process data are projected onto the normal operating region. The results of a case study of an industrial reheating furnace clearly demonstrates the power and advantages (e.g. decreasing the number of false alarms, identifying abnormal behaviour earlier, and reducing data sparsity) of the kernel density estimator‐based approach over the conventional approach under the assumption of normality, which is still widely used.

Abstract:On large process plants, real-time fault diagnosis is a difficult task for the operators, expert system can be used to assist them in this work. In this paper, a method of generating knowledge base for the real-time diagnostic problem solving was presented. The knowledge base takes a hierarchical structure: the high level is a semantic network representing general knowledge of fault propagation in a plant; the low level consists of all the nodes in the network, each node may be a functional component or a typical unit operation, and some of the nodes have local analytical fault diagnostic model. The global and local diagnosability of the system can be investigated by using topological and state space approaches. It is found that diagnosability is affected by the allocation of on-line sensors, the availability of off-line symptom information provided by human operator and the way to decompose the process plant. Coordination of the later three factors will give desired diagnosability and diagnosis efficiency. Based on the multi-level knowledge base, an integrated diagnosis system, with conventional part which includes a set of diagnostic algorithms using low level information and knowledge based part which has general reasoning ability, can be built up. To demonstrate usefulness of the knowledge base, an example in a chemical reactor domian is described.

Abstract:In this paper, a dynamic Bayesian network based systematic monitoring framework is proposed for plant-wide processes, which provides a systematical modeling scheme in both basic and global layer. First, the large-scale plant-wide process is decomposed into several local units according to prior process knowledge, providing local statistical information as the monitoring resources of the global layer. The network structures of local units are learned automatically from the process data, while the global structure is determined by prior process topology. The dynamic Bayesian network approach is employed for process modeling, considering the dynamic characteristic of the process, making the statistical indices into probabilistic form, which can describe the process uncertainty quantitatively and draw the causal relationships qualitatively. Furthermore, a systematic top-down monitoring framework is developed and applied to Tennessee Eastman benchmark process, evaluated to be efficient with process fault detection and diagnoses including identification of faulty unit and root-cause variables, and isolation of fault propagation through time-slices.

Abstract:Statistical local kernel principal component analysis (SLKPCA) has demonstrated its success in incipient fault detection of nonlinear industrial processes by incorporating the statistical local analysis (SLA) technology. However, the basic SLKPCA method builds the statistical model only based on the normal data and neglects the utilization of the prior fault information, which is often available in many industrial cases. To take full advantage of the prior fault information, this paper proposes an enhanced SLKPCA method, called primary-auxiliary SLKPCA (PA-SLKPCA), for better incipient fault monitoring. The contribution of the proposed method includes three aspects. First, one primary-auxiliary statistical monitoring framework is designed, by which not only the normal training data are applied to develop a primary SLKPCA model, but also the prior fault data are used to build the auxiliary SLKPCA models. Second, a double-block modeling strategy is developed to construct the auxiliary SLKPCA model for each fault case, where a variable grouping strategy based on Kullback-Leibler divergence is applied to divide the process variables into the fault-relevant group and fault-independent variable group, and the sub-model is developed for each group. Third, the Bayesian inference is used to combine the statistical results of each variable group, and one weighted fusion strategy is further designed to integrate the monitoring results from the primary and auxiliary models. Lastly, two case studies including one numerical system and the simulated continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) system are used for method evaluation and the simulations show that the proposed method can detect the incipient faults effectively and outperform the traditional SLKPCA method.

Abstract:Nonlinearity and dynamic are two typical behaviors that widely present in industrial processes. The monitoring performance of multivariable statistical process control techniques will be degraded if those two behaviors are not well addressed. In this paper, a kernel partial least squares (KPLS) based nonlinear state space model is proposed to model the process, which can handle the nonlinear and dynamic data behaviors simultaneously. Due to the non-Gaussian distribution of the nonlinear scores in the KPLS model, support vector data description is introduced for modeling and the corresponding statistic is constructed for monitoring. Two case studies are provided for performance evaluation of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, a Bayesian robust linear dynamic system approach is proposed for process modeling. Traditional linear dynamic system (LDS) constructed with Kalman filter is designed by Gaussian assumption which can be easily violated in non-Gaussian modeling situations, especially those with outliers. To deal with this issue, the conventional Gaussian-based Kalman filter is modified with heavy tailed Student's t-distribution so as to deal with the non-Gaussian noise and modeling outliers. Then, a variational Bayesian expectation maximization (VBEM) algorithm is developed for learning parameters of the robust linear dynamic system. For process monitoring, traditional monitoring scheme are discussed and the residual space monitoring mechanism has been improved. To explore the feasibility and effectiveness, the proposed method is applied for fault detection, with detailed comparative studies with several other methods through the Tennessee Eastman benchmark. Abstract:Due to the complexity of plant-wide processes, many of the current multivariate statistical process monitoring techniques are lacking in interpretation of the detected fault, and fault identification also becomes difficult. A new two-level multiblock independent component analysis and principal component analysis (MBICA-PCA) method is proposed in this paper. Different from the conventional method, the new approach can incorporate block information into the high level for global process monitoring. Through the new method, the process monitoring task can be greatly reduced and the interpretation for the process can be made more quickly. When a fault is detected, a two-step fault identification method is proposed. The responsible sub-block is first identified by contribution plots, which is followed by fault reconstruction in the corresponding sub-block for advanced fault identification. A case study of the Tennessee Eastman (TE) process evaluates the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper presents a knowledge-based system for aiding in the decision-making process that is carried out in hospital management. There are a number of reasons that have led us to choose a tool such as this one: the amount of information generated in a hospital, its great interrelation and the need of heuristic knowledge for its processing.The KBS has been designed following the KADS methodology. KADS has allowed us to obtain a structured representation of the knowledge, which makes easier both the construction and the debugging of the knowledge base. As a starting point, the decision-making task has been decomposed in four subtasks: monitoring; diagnosis; prediction of the possible solutions for the stated problem; and design of the solution.The prediction task can only be performed through a simulation program where the dynamics of the hospital is modeled. This allows the system to detect the consequences of the application of different possible solutions. The co-operation between simulation and artificial intelligence has proven to be an adequate technique for dealing with the decision-making tasks that are involved with the management of complex organizations.

Abstract:Over the last several years, many concrete structural have been constructed. For safety in concrete structure, periodic inspection has been conducted using many testing technologies and techniques. However, these technologies cannot replace visual inspection because of their slow and complicated procedures. For this reason, the Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS) are used to diagnose RC .Column crack damage (ISFCDFRCC). In this paper, we attempt to propose an alternative to the human expert, to give technical decisions in diagnosing crack damages in a beam. To overcome this requirement, an expert system is developed to achieve the research aim. This proposed system was constructed on a knowledge base that incorporates with the gathered information in the form of rules, which is suitable to implement in an expert system environment to diagnostic advisory nature. The proposed application results show an easy, fast and satisfactory answer to engineering needs.

Abstract:Recently, dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH) has been widely deployed on the Internet. However, the research about DASH over multiple content distribution servers (MCDS-DASH) is limited. Compared with traditional single-server DASH, MCDS-DASH is able to offer expanded bandwidth, link diversity, and reliability. It is, however, a challenging problem to smooth video bitrate switching over multiple servers due to their diverse bandwidths. In this paper, we propose a block-based rate adaptation method considering both the diverse bandwidths and feedback buffered video time. In our method, multiple fragments are grouped into a block and the fragments are downloaded in parallel from multiple servers. We propose to adapt video bitrate at the block level rather than at the fragment level. By dynamically adjusting the block length and scheduling fragment requests to multiple servers, the requested video bitrates from the multiple servers are synchronized, making the fragments download in an orderly way. Then, we propose a control-theoretic approach to select an appropriate bitrate for each block. By modeling and linearizing the rate adaption system, we propose a novel proportional-derivative controller to adapt video bitrate with high responsiveness and stability. Theoretical analysis and extensive experiments on our network testbed and the Internet demonstrate the good efficiency of the proposed method.
