Abstract:The topics relevant to grand unified theories (GUT) for fundamental forces have been investigated in the literature for four decades. The possible quantization of weak neutral charge is suggested within the model of electroweak unification in this paper, and based on this scheme, a theoretical weak mixing angle (sin2θw = 3/13 = 0.230769…), which agrees well with experimental measurements, can be obtained. In order to explore the origin of quantized weak neutral charge, a model of SU(7) grand unification is proposed. We will show that in the SU(N) GUT, N must be at least 7 in order to interpret such a theoretical weak mixing angle. It can be found that under proper weak mixing conditions for diagonal (neutral) gauge fields, such a theoretical weak mixing angle can be derived. Some relevant topics such as gauge-field vielbein and adjoint vielbein are discussed. Though there are still many problems that have not been resolved, the present scenario would enable us to gain insight into relevant topics such as gauge symmetry breaking, electroweak force unification as well as grand unification.

Abstract:We consider realizations of GUT models in F-theory. Adopting a bottom up approach, the assumption that the dynamics of the GUT model can in principle decouple from Planck scale physics leads to a surprisingly predictive framework. An internal U(1) hypercharge flux Higgses the GUT group directly to the MSSM or to a flipped GUT model, a mechanism unavailable in heterotic models. This new ingredient automatically addresses a number of puzzles present in traditional GUT models. The internal U(1) hyperflux allows us to solve the doublet-triplet splitting problem, and explains the qualitative features of the distorted GUT mass relations for lighter generations due to the Aharanov-Bohm effect. These models typically come with nearly exact global symmetries which prevent bare mu terms and also forbid dangerous baryon number violating operators. Strong curvature around our brane leads to a repulsion mechanism for Landau wave functions for neutral fields. This leads to large hierarchies of the form exp(-c/B^(2*g)) where c and g are order one parameters and B ~ M_(GUT)/(M_(pl)*alpha_(GUT)). This effect can simultaneously generate a viably small mu term as well as an acceptable Dirac neutrino mass on the order of 0.5 * 10^(-2 +/- 0.5) eV. In another scenario, we find a modified seesaw mechanism which predicts that the light neutrinos have masses in the expected range while the Majorana mass term for the heavy neutrinos is ~ 3 * 10^(12 +/- 1.5) GeV. Communicating supersymmetry breaking to the MSSM can be elegantly realized through gauge mediation. In one scenario, the same repulsion mechanism also leads to messenger masses which are naturally much lighter than the GUT scale.

Renormalizable minimal SO(10) GUT in 4D and 5D

Abstract:This report is a review of the present status of GUT, especially renormalizable minimal SO(10) GUT, and its future prospect. It consists of two parts. In part I, I review how the minimal renormalizable supersymmetric SO(10) GUT, an SO(10) framework with only one ${\bf 10}$ and one $\bar{\bf 126}$ Higgs multiplets in the Yukawa sector, is attractive because of its high predictivity. Indeed it not only gave a consistent predictions on neutrino oscillation data but also did reasonable and interesting values for Leptogenesis, LFV, muon g-2, neutrinoless double beta decay etc. However, this model suffers from problems, apart from the small deviations from the observed values, related to running of gauge couplings and proton decay. The gauge coupling unification may be spoiled due to the presence of intermediate scales much lighter than the grand unification (GUT) scale. In addition, the gauge couplings blow up around the GUT scale because of the presence of Higgs multiplets of large representations. In order to remedy these pathologies, in part II, we extend GUT into 5D. We propose two approaches: one is to consider the warped extra dimension, using the bulk Higgs profile to explain the intermediate energy scales. Another is to use the orbifold GUT. Both approaches are complementary to each other.

Towards a Realistic F-theory GUT

Abstract:We consider semi-local F-theory GUTs arising from a single E_8 point of local enhancement, leading to simple GUT groups based on E_6, SO(10) and SU(5) with SU(3), SU(4) and SU(5) spectral covers, respectively. Assuming the minimal Z_2 monodromy, we determine the homology classes and the associated spectra after flux breaking for each case. Our analysis includes the GUT singlets which have hitherto been ignored but which play a crucial role in phenomenology. Using these results we construct an E_6 based model that demonstrates, for the first time, that it is possible to construct a phenomenologically viable model which leads to the MSSM at low energies. The exotics that result from flux breaking all get a large mass when singlet fields acquire vacuum expectation values driven by D- and F-flatness. Due to the underlying GUT symmetry and the U(1)s descending from E_8, bare baryon- and lepton-number violating terms are forbidden up to and including dimension 5. As a result nucleon decay is naturally suppressed below present bounds. The mu-term is forbidden by the U(1) but is generated at the SUSY breaking scale when a further singlet field acquires a TeV scale vacuum expectation value, driven by the spontaneous breaking of the electroweak symmetry. After including the effect of flux and instanton corrections acceptable quark and charged lepton masses and mixing angles can be obtained. Neutrinos get a mass from the see-saw mechanism through their coupling to singlet neutrinos that acquire large Majorana mass as a result of the monodromy.

Abstract:We introduce a new string-inspired approach to the subject of grand unification which allows the GUT scale to be small, ≲200 TeV, so that it is within the reach of conceivable laboratory accelerated colliding beam devices. The key ingredient is a novel use of the heterotic string symmetry group physics ideas to render baryon number violating effects small enough to have escaped detection to date. This part of the approach involves new unknown parameters to be tested experimentally. A possible hint at the existence of these new parameters may already exist in the EW precision data comparisons with the SM expectations.

SUSY GUTs with Yukawa unification: a go/no-go study using FCNC processes

Abstract:We address the viability of exact Yukawa unification in the context of general SUSY GUTs with universal soft-breaking sfermion and gaugino mass terms at the GUT scale. We find that this possibility is challenged, unless the squark spectrum is pushed well above the limits allowed by naturalness. This conclusion is assessed through a global fit using electroweak observables and quark flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) processes. The problem is mostly the impossibility of accommodating simultaneously the bottom mass and the BR(B --> Xs gamma), after the stringent CDF upper bound on the decay Bs --> mu^+ mu^- is taken into account, and under the basic assumption that the b --> s gamma amplitude have like sign with respect to the Standard Model one, as indicated by the B --> Xs l^+ l^- data. With the same strategy, we also consider the possibility of relaxing Yukawa unification to b - tau Yukawa unification. We find that with small departures from the condition tan beta ~= 50, holding when Yukawa unification is exact, the mentioned tension is substantially relieved. We emphasize that in the region where fits are successful the lightest part of the SUSY spectrum is basically fixed by the requirements of b - tau unification and the applied FCNC constraints. As such, it is easily falsifiable once the LHC turns on.

On Abelian Gauge Symmetries and Proton Decay in Global F-theory GUTs

Abstract:The existence of abelian gauge symmetries in four-dimensional F-theory compactifications depends on the global geometry of the internal Calabi-Yau fourfold and has important phenomenological consequences. We study conceptual and phenomenological aspects of such U(1) symmetries along the Coulomb and the Higgs branch. As one application we examine abelian gauge factors arising after a certain global restriction of the Tate model that goes beyond a local spectral cover analysis. In SU(5) GUT models this mechanism enforces a global U(1)_X symmetry that prevents dimension-4 proton decay and allows for an identification of candidate right-handed neutrinos. We invoke a detailed account of the singularities of Calabi-Yau fourfolds and their mirror duals starting from an underlying E_8 and E_7 x U(1) enhanced Tate model. The global resolutions and deformations of these singularities can be used as the appropriate framework to analyse F-theory GUT models.

Unification and Phenomenology of F-Theory GUTs with U(1)_PQ

Abstract:We undertake a phenomenological study of SU(5) F-theory GUT models with an additional U(1)_{PQ} symmetry. In such models, breaking SU(5) with hypercharge flux leads to the presence of non-GUT multiplets in the spectrum. We study the effect these have on the unification of gauge couplings, including two-loop running as well as low- and high-scale threshold corrections. We use the requirement of unification to constrain the size of thresholds from KK modes of SU(5) gauge and matter fields. Assuming the non-GUT multiplets play the role of messengers of gauge mediation leads to controlled non-universalities in the sparticle spectrum while maintaining grand unification, and we study the LHC phenomenology of this scenario. We find that the MSSM spectrum may become compressed or stretched out {by up to a factor of three} depending on the distribution of hypercharge flux. We present a set of benchmark points whose production cross-sections and decays we investigate, and argue that precision kinematic edge measurements will allow the LHC to distinguish between our model and mGMSB.

A Note on Local GUT Models in F-Theory

Abstract:We construct non-minimal GUT local models in the F-theory configuration. The gauge group on the bulk G_S is one rank higher than the GUT gauge group. The line bundles on the curves are non-trivial to break G_S down to the GUT gauge groups. We demonstrate examples of SU(5) GUT from G_S=SU(6) and G_S=SO(10), the flipped SU(5) from G_S=SO(10), and the SO(10) GUT from G_S=SO(12) and G_S=E_6. We obtain complete GUT matter spectra and couplings, with minimum exotic matter contents. GUT gauge group breaking to MSSM is achievable by instanton configurations.

Abstract:We reconsider the minimal SU(5) Grand Unified Theory (GUT) in the context of no-scale supergravity, assuming that the soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters satisfy universality conditions at some input scale M_in above the GUT scale M_GUT. When setting up such a no-scale super-GUT model, special attention must be paid to avoiding the Scylla of rapid proton decay and the Charybdis of an excessive density of cold dark matter, while also having an acceptable mass for the Higgs boson. We do not find consistent solutions if none of the matter and Higgs fields are assigned to twisted chiral supermultiplets, even in the presence of Giudice-Masiero terms. However, consistent solutions may be found if at least one fiveplet of GUT Higgs fields is assigned to a twisted chiral supermultiplet, with a suitable choice of modular weights. Spin-independent dark matter scattering may be detectable in some of these consistent solutions.
Weinberg's No Go Theorem in Quantum Gravity

Abstract:An important hurdle to be faced by any model proposing a resolution to the cosmological constant problem is Weinberg's venerable no go theorem. This theorem states that no local field equations including classical gravity can have a flat Minkowski solution for generic values of the parameters, in other words, the no go theorem forbids the existence of any solution to the cosmological constant problem within local field theories without fine tuning. Though the original Weinberg theorem is valid only in classical gravity, in this article we prove that this theorem holds even in quantum gravity. Our proof is very general since it makes use of the BRST invariance emerging after gauge-fixing of general coordinate invariance and does not depend on the detail of quantum gravity.

Abstract:We construct global F-theory GUT models on del Pezzo surfaces in compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds realized as complete intersections of two hypersurface constraints. The intersections of the GUT brane and the flavour branes as well as the gauge flux are described by the spectral cover construction. We consider a split S[U(4) x U(1)_X] spectral cover, which allows for the phenomenologically relevant Yukawa couplings and GUT breaking to the MSSM via hypercharge flux while preventing dimension-4 proton decay. General expressions for the massless spectrum, consistency conditions and a new method for the computation of curvature-induced tadpoles are presented. We also provide a geometric toolkit for further model searches in the framework of toric geometry. Finally, an explicit global model with three chiral generations and all required Yukawa couplings is defined on a Calabi-Yau fourfold which is fibered over the del Pezzo transition of the Fano threefold P^4[4].

Generalizing Minimal Supergravity

Abstract:In Grand Unified Theories (GUTs), the Standard Model (SM) gauge couplings need not be unified at the GUT scale due to the high-dimensional operators. Considering gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking, we study for the first time the generic gauge coupling relations at the GUT scale, and the general gaugino mass relations which are valid from the GUT scale to the electroweak scale at one loop. We define the index k for these relations, which can be calculated in GUTs and can be determined at the Large Hadron Collider and the future International Linear Collider. Thus, we give a concrete definition of the GUT scale in these theories, and suggest a new way to test general GUTs at future experiments. We also discuss five special scenarios with interesting possibilities. With our generic formulae, we present all the GUT-scale gauge coupling relations and all the gaugino mass relations in the SU(5) and SO(10) models, and calculate the corresponding indices k. Especially, the index k is 5/3 in the traditional SU(5) and SO(10) models that have been studied extensively so far. Furthermore, we discuss the field theory realization of the U(1) flux effects on the SM gauge kinetic functions in F-theory GUTs, and calculate their indices k as well.

Abstract:In this paper we study the interplay between the recently proposed F-theory GUTs and cosmology. Despite the fact that the parameter range for F-theory GUT models is very narrow, we find that F-theory GUTs beautifully satisfy most cosmological constraints without any further restrictions. The viability of the scenario hinges on the interplay between various components of the axion supermultiplet, which in F-theory GUTs is also responsible for breaking supersymmetry. In these models, the gravitino is the LSP and develops a mass by eating the axino mode. The radial component of the axion supermultiplet known as the saxion typically begins to oscillate in the early Universe, eventually coming to dominate the energy density. Its decay reheats the Universe to a temperature of ~ 1 GeV, igniting BBN and diluting all thermal relics such as the gravitino by a factor of ~ 10^(-4) - 10^(-5) such that gravitinos contribute a sizable component of the dark matter. In certain cases, non-thermally produced relics such as the axion, or gravitinos generated from the decay of the saxion can also contribute to the abundance of dark matter. Remarkably enough, this cosmological scenario turns out to be independent of the initial reheating temperature of the Universe. This is due to the fact that the initial oscillation temperature of the saxion coincides with the freeze out temperature for gravitinos in F-theory GUTs. We also find that saxion dilution is compatible with generating the desired baryon asymmetry from standard leptogenesis. Finally, the gravitino mass range in F-theory GUTs is 10-100 MeV, which interestingly coincides with the window of values required for the decay of the NLSP to solve the problem of Li(7) over-production.

Novel GUT with Apparently Complete SU(5) Multiplets

Abstract:The perfect fit of the matter fields of the Standard Model into the SU(5) multiplets has strongly supported the idea of the grand unified theory (GUT) for decades. In this paper, we discuss a novel framework which explains why the Standard Model matter fields form the apparently complete SU(5) multiplets. In the new framework, the apparent matter unification inevitably results from chiral SU(5) gauge theory even if the quarks and leptons are not embedded into the common SU(5) multiplets. We call this class of models the "fake GUT." The novel phenomenological prediction of the fake GUT is more variety of the nucleon decay modes than the conventional GUT, which reflects the rich structure of the origin of the matter fields.
Towards natural and realistic $E_7$ GUTs in F-theory

Abstract:We consider phenomenological aspects of a natural class of Standard Model-like supersymmetric F-theory vacua realized through flux breaking of rigid $E_7$ gauge factors. Three generations of Standard Model matter are realized in many of these vacua. We further find that many other Standard Model-like features are naturally compatible with these constructions. For example, dimension-4 and 5 terms associated with proton decay are ubiquitously suppressed. Many of these features are due to the group theoretical structure of $E_7$ and associated F-theory geometry. In particular, a set of approximate global symmetries descends from the $E_7$ group, leading to exponential suppression of undesired couplings.

The trouble with the minimal renormalizable SO(10) GUT

Abstract:We scrutinize the physical viability of the minimal non-supersymmetric $\mathrm{SO}(10)$ GUT with the scalar sector $\mathbf{45}\oplus\mathbf{126}\oplus\mathbf{10}_{\mathbb{C}}$, in which the unified symmetry is broken by the former two representations, and a realistic Yukawa sector is supported by the last two. Alongside the known issue of a relatively low GUT scale (and thus overly fast proton decay) encountered in minimally fine-tuned scenarios, we identify a very general problem of the model: the inability to properly accommodate a Standard-Model-like low-energy Higgs doublet in the perturbative regime.

Abstract:Recent results in study of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model as the effective low energy theory give important hints for experimental search for supersymmetry. Also, in the bottom-up approach to explore weak scale - GUT scale connection, they constrain strongly physics at the GUT scale. Several theoretical ideas about the GUT physics are in stunning agreement with the low energy data.

Abstract:In this talk, given at Corfu 2022 Workshop on the Standard Model and Beyond, I present work in collaboration with Junichiro Kawamura,Ref.~[<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2212.00840" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.00840">arXiv:2212.00840</a>]. The talk is also based on a number of papers on a Global $SU(5)$ F-theory GUT in collaboration with Herb Clemens. In the model $SU(5)$ is broken to the MSSM via a Wilson line. This is accomplished (without problems with vector-like exotics) by simultaneously describing the F-theory model and its Heterotic dual. The model has a twin MSSM sector and it's the neutrino sector of the field I consider in the talk.
