Abstract:We develop domain theory in constructive and predicative univalent foundations (also known as homotopy type theory). That we work predicatively means that we do not assume Voevodsky's propositional resizing axioms. Our work is constructive in the sense that we do not rely on excluded middle or the axiom of (countable) choice. Domain theory studies so-called directed complete posets (dcpos) and Scott continuous maps between them and has applications in programming language semantics, higher-type computability and topology. A common approach to deal with size issues in a predicative foundation is to work with information systems, abstract bases or formal topologies rather than dcpos, and approximable relations rather than Scott continuous functions. In our type-theoretic approach, we instead accept that dcpos may be large and work with type universes to account for this. A priori one might expect that complex constructions of dcpos result in a need for ever-increasing universes and are predicatively impossible. We show that such constructions can be carried out in a predicative setting. We illustrate the development with applications in the semantics of programming languages: the soundness and computational adequacy of the Scott model of PCF and Scott's $D_\infty$ model of the untyped $\lambda$-calculus. We also give a predicative account of continuous and algebraic dcpos, and of the related notions of a small basis and its rounded ideal completion. The fact that nontrivial dcpos have large carriers is in fact unavoidable and characteristic of our predicative setting, as we explain in a complementary chapter on the constructive and predicative limitations of univalent foundations. Our account of domain theory in univalent foundations is fully formalised with only a few minor exceptions. The ability of the proof assistant Agda to infer universe levels has been invaluable for our purposes.

Tarski's least fixed point theorem: A predicative type theoretic formulation

Abstract:We provide a type theoretic treatment of the paper "On Tarski's fixed point theorem" by Giovanni Curi. There are benefits to having a type theoretic formulation apart from routine implementation in a proof assistant. By taking advantage of (higher) inductive types, we can avoid complicated set theoretic constructions. Arguably, this results in a presentation that is conceptually clearer. Additionally, due the predicative admissibility of (higher) inductive types we take a step towards the "system independent" derivation that Curi calls for in his conclusion. Finally, we explore a condition on monotone maps that guarantees they are `generated' and give an alternative statement of the least fixed point theorem in terms of this condition.

Abstract:We define a new topos, the Herbrand topos, inspired by the modified realizability topos and our earlier work on Herbrand realizability. We also introduce the category of Herbrand assemblies and characterise these as the double-negation-separated objects in the Herbrand topos. In addition, we show that the category of sets is included as the category of double-negation-sheaves and prove that the inclusion functor preserves and reflects validity of first-order formulas.

Abstract:This chapter examines the thematic and aspectual properties of two constructions of secondary predication, resultatives and depictives. The thematic and aspectual constraints on the two types of secondary predicate and their hosts are detailed, as are the semantic constraints on the relation between the main verb and each of the secondary predicate types and the structural representation of these relations. The final sections focus on the issue of the argument or adjunct status of the different types of depictive and resultative (such as true versus false resultative) predicates, the role of each type in the event structure representation, and the possibility of distinguishing between secondary predicates and certain adverbial types. As noted by the studies reviewed in this chapter, an examination of secondary predicate constructions sheds light on properties of verb and adjective types, the characterization of argument versus adjunct, and the thematic and aspectual underpinnings of event structure.
On the Compatibility of Constructive Predicative Mathematics with Weyl's Classical Predicativity

Abstract:It is well known that most foundations for Bishop's constructive mathematics are incompatible with a classical predicative development of analysis as put forward by Weyl in his $\textit{Das Kontinuum}$. Here, we first recall how this incompatibility arises from the possibility, present in most constructive foundations, to define sets by quantifying over (the exponentiation of) functional relations. This possibility is not allowed in modern formulations of Weyl's logical system. Then, we argue how a possible way out is offered by foundations, such as the Minimalist Foundation, where exponentiation is limited to a primitive notion of function defined by $\lambda$-terms as in dependent type theory. The price to pay is to renounce the so-called rule of unique choice identifying functional relations with $\lambda$-terms, and to number-theoretic choice principles, characteristic of foundations aimed to formalize Bishop's constructive analysis. This restriction calls for a point-free constructive development of topology as advocated by P. Martin-Löf and G. Sambin with the introduction of Formal Topology. Hence, we conclude that the Minimalist Foundation promises to be a natural crossroads between Bishop's constructivism and Weyl's classical predicativity provided that a point-free reformulation of classical analysis is viable.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of strong proximity join-semilattice, a predicative notion of continuous lattice which arises as the Karoubi envelop of the category of algebraic lattices. Strong proximity join-semilattices can be characterised by the coalgebras of the lower powerlocale on the wider category of proximity posets (also known as abstract bases or R-structures). Moreover, locally compact locales can be characterised in terms of strong proximity join-semilattices by the coalgebras of the double powerlocale on the category of proximity posets. We also provide more logical characterisation of a strong proximity join-semilattice, called a strong continuous finitary cover, which uses an entailment relation to present the underlying join-semilattice. We show that this structure naturally corresponds to the notion of continuous lattice in the predicative point-free topology. Our result makes the predicative and finitary aspect of the notion of continuous lattice in point-free topology more explicit.

Classical Predicative Logic-Enriched Type Theories

Abstract:A logic-enriched type theory (LTT) is a type theory extended with a primitive mechanism for forming and proving propositions. We construct two LTTs, named LTTO and LTTO*, which we claim correspond closely to the classical predicative systems of second order arithmetic ACAO and ACA. We justify this claim by translating each second-order system into the corresponding LTT, and proving that these translations are conservative. This is part of an ongoing research project to investigate how LTTs may be used to formalise different approaches to the foundations of mathematics. The two LTTs we construct are subsystems of the logic-enriched type theory LTTW, which is intended to formalise the classical predicative foundation presented by Herman Weyl in his monograph Das Kontinuum. The system ACAO has also been claimed to correspond to Weyl's foundation. By casting ACAO and ACA as LTTs, we are able to compare them with LTTW. It is a consequence of the work in this paper that LTTW is strictly stronger than ACAO. The conservativity proof makes use of a novel technique for proving one LTT conservative over another, involving defining an interpretation of the stronger system out of the expressions of the weaker. This technique should be applicable in a wide variety of different cases outside the present work.

A Comparison of Two Topos-Theoretic Approaches to Quantum Theory

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to compare the two topos-theoretic approaches to quantum mechanics that may be found in the literature to date. The first approach, which we will call the contravariant approach, was originally proposed by Isham and Butterfield, and was later extended by Doering and Isham. The second approach, which we will call the covariant approach, was developed by Heunen, Landsman and Spitters. Motivated by coarse-graining and the Kochen-Specker theorem, the contravariant approach uses the topos of presheaves on a specific context category, defined as the poset of commutative von Neumann subalgebras of some given von Neumann algebra. In particular, the approach uses the spectral presheaf. The intuitionistic logic of this approach is given by the (complete) Heyting algebra of closed open subob jects of the spectral presheaf. We show that this Heyting algebra is, in a natural way, a locale in the ambient topos, and compare this locale with the internal Gelfand spectrum of the covariant approach. In the covariant approach, a non-commutative C*-algebra (in the topos Set) defines a commutative C*-algebra internal to the topos of covariant functors from the context category to the category of sets. We give an explicit description of the internal Gelfand spectrum of this commutative C*-algebra, from which it follows that the external spectrum is spatial. Using the daseinisation of self-adjoint operators from the contravariant approach, we give a new definition of the daseinisation arrow in the covariant approach and compare it with the original version. States and state-proposition pairing in both approaches are compared. We also investigate the physical interpretation of the covariant approach.

Abstract:This paper sets out a predicative response to the Russell-Myhill paradox of propositions within the framework of Church's intensional logic. A predicative response places restrictions on the full comprehension schema, which asserts that every formula determines a higher-order entity. In addition to motivating the restriction on the comprehension schema from intuitions about the stability of reference, this paper contains a consistency proof for the predicative response to the Russell-Myhill paradox. The models used to establish this consistency also model other axioms of Church's intensional logic that have been criticized by Parsons and Klement: this, it turns out, is due to resources which also permit an interpretation of a fragment of Gallin's intensional logic. Finally, the relation between the predicative response to the Russell-Myhill paradox of propositions and the Russell paradox of sets is discussed, and it is shown that the predicative conception of set induced by this predicative intensional logic allows one to respond to the Wehmeier problem of many non-extensions.
Stratified Toposes

Abstract:We introduce stratified toposes, which are toposes that are stratified by a suitable hierarchy of universes. The term `stratified topos' recalls the notion of stratified pseudotopos of Moerdijk and Palmgren (2002). However, the details of our proposal are closer to that of Streicher (2005), with the foundational contribution being a strengthening of Streicher's axioms. As such, stratified toposes model the calculus of constructions. Key results about toposes can be refined to yield results about stratified toposes. As proof of concept, we construct what we call the stratified topos of coalgebras for a stratified Cartesian comonad on a stratified topos. This construction refines that of the topos of coalgebras for a Cartesian comonad on a topos. Coalgebra constructions in related settings were given by Warren (2007) and Zwanziger (2023). This coalgebra construction exposes conditions under which generic monomorphisms and dense subcategories can be lifted to coalgebras, which are extracted in the appendix.

Abstract:In this note we show how two fundamental results in Topos theory follow by repeated use of Yoneda's Lemma, the formalism of natural transformations and very basic category theory. In Lemma 9.4, we show the fundamental result SGA4 EXPOSE IV Proposition 4.9.4, which says that for any site $\cc{C}$, the canonical functor $\cc{C} \mr{\varepsilon} Sh(\cc{C})$ into the category of sheaves, classifies sites morphisms $\cc{C} \mr{} \cc{Z}$ into any topos $\cc{Z}$. After the usual Yoneda's Lemma, Lemma 3.1, we show that the Yoneda functor $\cc{C} \mr{h} \Eop{C}$ classifies functors $\cc{C} \mr{} \cc{Z}$ into any cocomplete category $\cc{Z}$, via a cocontinuos extension $\Eop{C} \mr{} \cc{Z}$, Lemma 5.2. Then we reach Lemma 9.4 by an step by step enrichment of 5.2. All we use is Yoneda's Lemma, over and over again, and the Yoga of natural transformations. In Lemma 10.1 we show the equivalence between \emph{flatness} and \emph{left exactness} for functors from finitely complete categories into any topos. Our proof is elementary, we show how basic exactness properties of sets prove the result for set valued functors, then we generalize to functors valued in any topos utilizing results of the previous sections and the Yoga of natural transformations. Besides the thread we follow,nothing here is new, although we haven't seen 10.1 proved this way before.

A Predictive Model for Notional Anaphora in English

Abstract:Notional anaphors are pronouns which disagree with their antecedents' grammatical categories for notional reasons, such as plural to singular agreement in: 'the government ... they'. Since such cases are rare and conflict with evidence from strictly agreeing cases ('the government ... it'), they present a substantial challenge to both coreference resolution and referring expression generation. Using the OntoNotes corpus, this paper takes an ensemble approach to predicting English notional anaphora in context on the basis of the largest empirical data to date. In addition to state of the art prediction accuracy, the results suggest that theoretical approaches positing a plural construal at the antecedent's utterance are insufficient, and that circumstances at the anaphor's utterance location, as well as global factors such as genre, have a strong effect on the choice of referring expression.

Abstract:What is the role of topos theory in the topos models for quantum theory as used by Isham, Butterfield, Doring, Heunen, Landsman, Spitters and others? In other words, what is the interplay between physical motivation for the models and the mathematical framework used in these models? Concretely, we show that the presheaf topos model of Butterfield, Isham and Doring resembles classical physics when viewed from the internal language of the presheaf topos, similar to the copresheaf topos model of Heunen, Landsman and Spitters. Both the presheaf and copresheaf models provide a `quantum logic' in the form of a complete Heyting algebra. Although these algebras are natural from a topos theoretic stance, we seek a physical interpretation for the logical operations. Finally, we investigate dynamics. In particular we describe how an automorphism on the operator algebra induces a homeomorphism (or isomorphism of locales) on the associated state spaces of the topos models, and how elementary propositions and truth values transform under the action of this homeomorphism. Also with dynamics the focus is on the internal perspective of the topos.

Abstract:We introduce judgemental theories and their calculi as a general framework to present and study deductive systems. As an exemplification of their expressivity, we approach dependent type theory and natural deduction as special kinds of judgemental theories. Our analysis sheds light on both the topics, providing a new point of view. In the case of type theory, we provide an abstract definition of type constructor featuring the usual formation, introduction, elimination and computation rules. For natural deduction we offer a deep analysis of structural rules, demystifying some of their properties, and putting them into context. We finish the paper discussing the internal logic of a topos, a predicative topos, an elementary 2-topos et similia, and show how these can be organized in judgemental theories.

A Foundation for Synthetic Stone Duality

Abstract:The language of homotopy type theory has proved to be appropriate as an internal language for various higher toposes, for example with Synthetic Algebraic Geometry for the Zariski topos. In this paper we apply such techniques to the higher topos corresponding to the light condensed sets of Dustin Clausen and Peter Scholze. This seems to be an appropriate setting to develop synthetic topology, similar to the work of Martín Escardó. To reason internally about light condensed sets, we use homotopy type theory extended with 4 axioms. Our axioms are strong enough to prove Markov's principle, LLPO and the negation of WLPO. We also define a type of open propositions, inducing a topology on any type. This leads to a synthetic topological study of (second countable) Stone and compact Hausdorff spaces. Indeed all functions are continuous in the sense that they respect this induced topology, and this topology is as expected for these classes of types. For example, any map from the unit interval to itself is continuous in the usual epsilon-delta sense. We also use the synthetic homotopy theory given by the higher types of homotopy type theory to define and work with cohomology. As an application, we prove Brouwer's fixed-point theorem internally.

A topological reading of inductive and coinductive definitions in Dependent Type Theory

Abstract:In the context of dependent type theory, we show that coinductive predicates have an equivalent topological counterpart in terms of coinductively generated positivity relations, introduced by G. Sambin to represent closed subsets in point-free topology. Our work is complementary to a previous one with M.E. Maietti, where we showed that, in dependent type theory, the well-known concept of wellfounded trees has a topological equivalent counterpart in terms of proof-relevant inductively generated formal covers used to provide a predicative and constructive representation of complete suplattices. All proofs in Martin-Löf's type theory are formalised in the Agda proof assistant.
