Abstract:Consensus about the universality of the power law feature in complex networks is experiencing profound challenges. To shine fresh light on this controversy, we propose a generic theoretical framework in order to examine the power law property. First, we study a class of birth-and-death networks that is ubiquitous in the real world, and calculate its degree distributions. Our results show that the tails of its degree distributions exhibits a distinct power law feature, providing robust theoretical support for the ubiquity of the power law feature. Second, we suggest that in the real world two important factors, network size and node disappearance probability, point to the existence of the power law feature in the observed networks. As network size reduces, or as the probability of node disappearance increases, then the power law feature becomes increasingly difficult to observe. Finally, we suggest that an effective way of detecting the power law property is to observe the asymptotic (limiting) behaviour of the degree distribution within its effective intervals.

Abstract:Power-law distributions occur in many situations of scientific interest and have significant consequences for our understanding of natural and man-made phenomena. Unfortunately, the detection and characterization of power laws is complicated by the large fluctuations that occur in the tail of the distributionthe part of the distribution representing large but rare eventsand by the difficulty of identifying the range over which power-law behavior holds. Commonly used methods for analyzing power-law data, such as least-squares fitting, can produce substantially inaccurate estimates of parameters for power-law distributions, and even in cases where such methods return accurate answers they are still unsatisfactory because they give no indication of whether the data obey a power law at all. Here we present a principled statistical framework for discerning and quantifying power-law behavior in empirical data. Our approach combines maximum-likelihood fitting methods with goodness-of-fit tests based on the KolmogorovSmirnov (KS) statistic and likelihood ratios. We evaluate the effectiveness of the approach with tests on synthetic data and give critical comparisons to previous approaches. We also apply the proposed methods to twenty-four real-world data sets from a range of different disciplines, each of which has been conjectured to follow a power-law distribution. In some cases we find these conjectures to be consistent with the data, while in others the power law is ruled out.

Abstract:A power law (PL) is the form taken by a large number of surprising empirical regularities in economics and finance. This review surveys well-documented empirical PLs regarding income and wealth, the size of cities and firms, stock market returns, trading volume, international trade, and executive pay. It reviews detail-independent theoretical motivations that make sharp predictions concerning the existence and coefficients of PLs, without requiring delicate tuning of model parameters. These theoretical mechanisms include random growth, optimization, and the economics of superstars, coupled with extreme value theory. Some empirical regularities currently lack an appropriate explanation. This article highlights these open areas for future research.

Abstract:The difference between the inverse power function and the negative exponential function is significant. The former suggests a complex distribution, while the latter indicates a simple distribution. However, the association of the power-law distribution with the exponential distribution has been seldom researched. This paper is devoted to exploring the relationships between exponential laws and power laws from the angle of view of urban geography. Using mathematical derivation and numerical experiments, I reveal that a power-law distribution can be created through a semi-moving average process of an exponential distribution. For the distributions defined in a one-dimension space (e.g. Zipf's law), the power exponent is 1; while for those defined in a two-dimension space (e.g. Clark's law), the power exponent is 2. The findings of this study are as follows. First, the exponential distributions suggest a hidden scaling, but the scaling exponents suggest a Euclidean dimension. Second, special power-law distributions can be derived from exponential distributions, but they differ from the typical power-law distributions. Third, it is the real power-law distributions that can be related with fractal dimension. This study discloses an inherent link between simplicity and complexity. In practice, maybe the result presented in this paper can be employed to distinguish the real power laws from spurious power laws (e.g. the fake Zipf distribution).

Abstract:Statistical laws describe regular patterns observed in diverse scientific domains, ranging from the magnitude of earthquakes (Gutenberg-Richter law) and metabolic rates in organisms (Kleiber's law), to the frequency distribution of words in texts (Zipf's and Herdan-Heaps' laws), and productivity metrics of cities (urban scaling laws). The origins of these laws, their empirical validity, and the insights they provide into underlying systems have been subjects of scientific inquiry for centuries. This monograph provides an unifying approach to the study of statistical laws, critically evaluating their role in the theoretical understanding of complex systems and the different data-analysis methods used to evaluate them. Through a historical review and a unified analysis, we uncover that the persistent controversies on the validity of statistical laws are predominantly rooted not in novel empirical findings but in the discordance among data-analysis techniques, mechanistic models, and the interpretations of statistical laws. Starting with simple examples and progressing to more advanced time-series and statistical methods, this monograph and its accompanying repository provide comprehensive material for researchers interested in analyzing data, testing and comparing different laws, and interpreting results in both existing and new datasets.

Abstract:The ubiquity of power-law relations in empirical data displays physicists' love of simple laws and uncovering common causes among seemingly unrelated phenomena. However, many reported power laws lack statistical support and mechanistic backings, not to mention discrepancies with real data are often explained away as corrections due to finite size or other variables. We propose a simple experiment and rigorous statistical procedures to look into these issues. Making use of the fact that the occurrence rate and pulse intensity of crumple sound obey power law with an exponent that varies with material, we simulate a complex system with two driving mechanisms by crumpling two different sheets together. The probability function of crumple sound is found to transit from two power-law terms to a {\it bona fide} power law as compaction increases. In addition to showing the vicinity of these two distributions in the phase space, this observation nicely demonstrates the effect of interactions to bring about a subtle change in macroscopic behavior and more information may be retrieved if the data are subject to sorting. Our analyses are based on the Akaike information criterion that is a direct measurement of information loss and emphasizes the need to strike a balance between model simplicity and goodness of fit. As a show of force, the Akaike information criterion also found the Gutenberg-Richter law for earthquakes and the scale-free model for brain functional network, 2-dimensional sand pile, and solar flare intensity to suffer excessive loss of information. They resemble more the crumpled-together ball at low compactions in that there appear to be two driving mechanisms that take turns occurring.

Abstract:Insights into the dynamics of a complex system are often gained by focusing on large fluctuations. For the financial system, huge databases now exist that facilitate the analysis of large fluctuations and the characterization of their statistical behaviour1,2. Power laws appear to describe histograms of relevant financial fluctuations, such as fluctuations in stock price, trading volume and the number of trades3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10. Surprisingly, the exponents that characterize these power laws are similar for different types and sizes of markets, for different market trends and even for different countries—suggesting that a generic theoretical basis may underlie these phenomena. Here we propose a model, based on a plausible set of assumptions, which provides an explanation for these empirical power laws. Our model is based on the hypothesis that large movements in stock market activity arise from the trades of large participants. Starting from an empirical characterization of the size distribution of those large market participants (mutual funds), we show that the power laws observed in financial data arise when the trading behaviour is performed in an optimal way. Our model additionally explains certain striking empirical regularities that describe the relationship between large fluctuations in prices, trading volume and the number of trades.

Abstract:It has been discovered recently that many social, biological and ecological systems have the so-called small-world and scale-free features, which has provoked new research interest in the studies of various complex networks. Yet, most network models studied thus far are binary, with the linking strengths being either 0 or 1, while which are best described by weighted-linking networks, in which the vertices interact with each other with varying strengths. Here we found that the distribution of connection strengths of scientific collaboration networks decays also in a power-law form and we conjecture that all weighted-linking networks of this type follow the same distribution.

Abstract:The study of financial fluctuations is an important area of econophysics. Based on empirical research on the dominating variables of financial markets through the use of various physical methods, physicists have opened the door to understanding the power-law asymptotic behaviour of the price fluctuations of financial assets and the tails of the probability distributions of the variables involved. This has aroused broad interest as the power-law behaviour is quite different from the normal distribution and the suggested Lvy distribution used in conventional finance. In this paper some main empirical research methods and results of the power-law distributions of financial asset returns, together with relevant theoretical explanations, are reviewed.

Abstract:Power law distributions have been found in many natural and social phenomena, and more recently in the source code and run-time characteristics of Object-Oriented (OO) systems. A power law implies that small values are extremely common, whereas large values are extremely rare. In this paper, we identify twelve new power laws relating to the static graph structures of Java programs. The graph structures analyzed represented different forms of OO coupling, namely, inheritance, aggregation, interface, parameter type and return type. Identification of these new laws provide the basis for predicting likely features of classes in future developments. The research in this paper ties together work in object-based coupling and World Wide Web structures.

Abstract:Logarithmic transformation of the data has been recommended by the literature in the case of highly skewed distributions such as those commonly found in information science. The purpose of the transformation is to make the data conform to the lognormal law of error for inferential purposes. How does this transformation affect the analysis? We factor analyze and visualize the citation environment of the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS) before and after a logarithmic transformation. The transformation strongly reduces the variance necessary for classificatory purposes and therefore is counterproductive to the purposes of the descriptive statistics. We recommend against the logarithmic transformation when sets cannot be defined unambiguously. The intellectual organization of the sciences is reflected in the curvilinear parts of the citation distributions while negative powerlaws fit excellently to the tails of the distributions.

Abstract:The theory of graphons is an important tool in understanding properties of large networks. We investigate a power-law random graph model and cast it in the graphon framework. The distinctively different structures of the limit graph are explored in detail in the sub-critical and super-critical regimes. In the sub-critical regime, the graph is empty with high probability, and in the rare event that it is non-empty, it consists of a single edge. Contrarily, in the super-critical regime, a non-trivial random graph exists in the limit, and it serves as an uncovered boundary case between different types of graph convergence.

Abstract:The power law is ubiquitous in natural and social phenomena, and is considered as a universal relationship between the frequency and its rank for diverse social systems. However, a general model is still lacking to interpret why these seemingly unrelated systems share great similarity. Through a detailed analysis of natural language texts and simulation experiments based on the proposed 'Hierarchical Selection Model', we found that the existence of hierarchies and human's pursuit of top hierarchy lead to the power law. Further, the power law is a statistical and emergent performance of hierarchies, and it is the universality of hierarchies that contributes to the ubiquity of the power law.

Abstract:Based on three theorems for size-to-rank transformations, the shifted power function is used to set up a theoretical framework unifying informetric distributions. While the shifted power function with time-type exponential cutoff supplies a unifying informetric framework, the shifted power function with space-type exponential cutoff can be linked to the Pareto and Weibull distributions. The exponent is the crucial parameter in a power function, determining the most important characteristics of the power-law distribution.

Abstract:The power-law behavior is ubiquitous in a majority of real-world networks, and it was shown to have a strong effect on various combinatorial, structural, and dynamical properties of graphs. For example, it has been shown that in real-life power-law networks, both the matching number and the domination number are relatively smaller, compared with homogeneous graphs. In this paper, we study analytically several combinatorial problems for two power-law graphs with the same number of vertices, edges, and the same power exponent. For both graphs, we determine exactly or recursively their matching number, independence number, domination number, the number of maximum matchings, the number of maximum independent sets, and the number of minimum dominating sets. We show that power-law behavior itself cannot characterize the combinatorial properties of a heterogenous graph. Since the combinatorial properties studied here have found wide applications in different fields, such as structural controllability of complex networks, our work offers insight in the applications of these combinatorial problems in power-law graphs.

Abstract:A network is constructed by nodes and links, thus the node degree and the link strength appear as underlying quantities in network analysis. While the power-law distribution of node degrees is verified as a basic feature of numerous real networks, we investigate whether the link strengths follow the power-law distribution in weighted networks. After testing 12 different paper cocitation networks with 2 methods, fitting in double-log scales and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (K-S test), we observe that, in most cases, the link strengths also follow the approximate power-law distribution. The results suggest that the power-law type distribution could emerge not only in nodes and informational entities, but also in links and informational connections.

Abstract:For discrete segmental power-law distributions, the probability ratio ft/ft+1 is a linear function of the exponent parameter. Based on this property, the estimation of the exponent parameter and a goodness-of-fit testing method are provided. The proposed testing method is parameter-independent and the testing statistic is proved to asymptotically follow a chi-square distribution. In the region where power-law properties exist, the testing method and the estimation method can be applied by segments, so they can also be used to determine interval endpoints. These methods can also be extended to other discrete distributions such as Yule distribution, Poisson distribution, Geometry distribution and so on. Some simulation results of synthetic truncated power-law distributions provide support for the effectiveness of the proposed methods. To demonstrate the applicability of the method, two empirical examples, word frequencies of the novel Moby Dick and US casuality numbers in the American Indian War, are analyzed.

Abstract:This paper introduces nonparametric econometric methods that characterize general power law distributions under basic stability conditions. These methods extend the literature on power laws in the social sciences in several directions. First, we show that any stationary distribution in a random growth setting is shaped entirely by two factors - the idiosyncratic volatilities and reversion rates (a measure of cross-sectional mean reversion) for different ranks in the distribution. This result is valid regardless of how growth rates and volatilities vary across different economic agents, and hence applies to Gibrat's law and its extensions. Second, we present techniques to estimate these two factors using panel data. Third, we show how our results offer a structural explanation for a generalized size effect in which higher-ranked processes grow more slowly than lower-ranked processes on average. Finally, we employ our empirical methods using panel data on commodity prices and show that our techniques accurately describe the empirical distribution of relative commodity prices. We also show the existence of a generalized "size" effect for commodities, as predicted by our econometric theory.
