Abstract:We generalize Bell's inequalities to biparty systems with continuous quantum variables. This is achieved by introducing the Bell-operator in perfect analogy to the usual spin-1/2 systems. It is then demonstrated that two-mode squeezed vacuum states display quantum nonlocality by using the generalized Bell operator. In particular, the original Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen states, which are the limiting case of the two-mode squeezed vacuum states, can maximally violate Bell's inequality due to Clauser, Horne, Shimony, and Holt. The experimental aspect of our scheme is briefly considered.

Abstract:We propose Bell inequalities for discrete or continuous quantum systems which test the compatibility of quantum physics with an interpretation in terms of deterministic hidden-variable theories. The wave function collapse that occurs in a sequence of quantum measurements enters the upper bound via the concept of quantum conditional probabilities. The resulting hidden-variable inequality is applicable to an arbitrary observable that is decomposable into a weighted sum of non-commuting projectors. We present local and non-local examples of violation of generalized Bell inequalities in phase space, which sense the negativity of the Wigner function.

Abstract:Tests of local hidden variable theories using measurements with continuous variable (CV) outcomes are developed, and a comparison of different methods is presented. As examples, we focus on multipartite entangled GHZ and cluster states. We suggest a physical process that produces the states proposed here, and investigate experiments both with and without binning of the continuous variable. In the former case, the Mermin-Klyshko inequalities can be used directly. For unbinned outcomes, the moment-based CFRD inequalities are extended to functional inequalities by considering arbitrary functions of the measurements at each site. By optimising these functions, we obtain more robust violations of local hidden variable theories than with either binning or moments. Recent inequalities based on the algebra of quaternions and octonions are compared with these methods. Since the prime advantage of CV experiments is to provide a route to highly efficient detection via homodyne measurements, we analyse the effect of noise and detection losses in both binned and unbinned cases. The CV moment inequalities with an optimal function have greater robustness to both loss and noise. This could permit a loophole-free test of Bell inequalities.

Abstract:Bell conjectured that a positive Wigner function does not allow violation of the inequalities imposed by local hidden variable theories. A requirement for this conjecture is "when phase space measurements are performed". We introduce the theory-independent concept of "operationally local transformations" which refers to the change of the switch on a local measurement apparatus. We show that two separated parties, performing only phase space measurements on a composite quantum system with a positive Wigner function and performing only operationally local transformations that preserve this positivity, can nonetheless violate Bell's inequality. Such operationally local transformations are realized using entangled ancillae.

Abstract:Elegant Bell inequality is well known for its much exploited property, being maximally violated by maximal entanglement, mutually unbiased bases, and symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measure elements. It is the only one with such property known so far. We present a method to construct Bell inequalities with violation feature analogous to original elegant Bell inequality in high dimension from a simple analytic quantum bound. A Bell inequality with such feature is derived in three dimension for the first time. It shows larger violation than existing Bell inequalities of similar classes while requiring arguably small number of measurements.

Abstract:A method for construction of the multipartite Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) type Bell inequalities, for the case of local binary observables, is presented. The standard CHSH-type Bell inequalities can be obtained as special cases. A unified framework to establish all kinds of CHSH-type Bell inequalities by increasing step by step the number of observers is given. As an application, compact Bell inequalities, for eight observers, involving just four correlation functions are proposed. They require much less experimental effort than standard methods and thus is experimentally friendly in multi-photon experiments.
Violations of Entropic Bell Inequalities with Coarse-Grained Quadrature Measurements for Continuous-Variable States

Abstract:It is a long-standing belief, as pointed out by Bell in 1986, that it is impossible to use a two-mode Gaussian state possessing a positive-definite Wigner function to demonstrate nonlocality as the Wigner function itself provides a local hidden-variable model. In particular, when one performs continuous-variable (CV) quadrature measurements upon a routinely generated CV entanglement, namely, the two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) state, the resulting Wigner function is positive-definite and as such, the TMSV state cannot violate any Bell inequality using CV quadrature measurements. We show here, however, that a Bell inequality for CV states in terms of entropies can be quantum mechanically violated by the TMSV state with two coarse-grained quadrature measurements per site within experimentally accessible parameter regime. The proposed CV entropic Bell inequality is advantageous for an experimental test, especially for a possible loophole-free test of nonlocality, as the quadrature measurements can be implemented with homodyne detections of nearly 100% detection efficiency under current technology.

Abstract:Newton's second law aids us in predicting the location of a classical object after knowing its initial position and velocity together with the force it experiences at any time, which can be seen as a process of continuous iteration. When it comes to discrete problems, e.g. building Bell inequalities, as a vital tool to study the powerful nonlocal correlations in quantum information processing. Unless having known precisely the general formula of associated inequalities, iterative formulas build a bridge from simple examples to all elements in the set of Bell inequalities. Although exhaust all entities in the set, even in the subset of tight individuals, is a NP hard problem, it is possible to find out the evolution law of Bell inequalities from few-body, limited-setting and low-dimension situations to arbitrary $(n,k,d)$ constructions, i.e. $n$ particles, $k$ measurements per particle, and $d$ outcomes per measurement. In this work, via observing Śliwa's 46 tight (3,2,2) Bell inequalities [{Phys. Lett. A}. 317, 165-168 (2003)], uniting the root method [{Phys. Rev. A}. 79, 012115, (2009)] and the idea of degeneration, we discover an iterative formula of Bell inequalities containing all $(n,k,2)$ circumstances, which paves a potential way to study the current Bell inequalities in terms of iterative relations combining root method on the one hand, and explore more interesting inequalities on the other.

Abstract:We derive entropic Bell inequalities from considering entropy Venn diagrams. These entropic inequalities, akin to the Braunstein-Caves inequalities, are violated for a quantum mechanical Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen pair, which implies that the conditional entropies of Bell variables must be negative in this case. This suggests that the satisfaction of entropic Bell inequalities is equivalent to the non-negativity of conditional entropies as a necessary condition for separability.

Abstract:Generalizations of Bell's theorem, particularly within quantum networks, are now being analyzed through the causal inference lens. However, the exploration of interventions, a central concept in causality theory, remains significantly unexplored. In this work we give an initial step in this direction, by analyzing the instrumental scenario and proposing novel hybrid Bell inequalities integrating observational and interventional data. Focusing on binary outcomes with any number of inputs, we obtain the complete characterization of the observational-interventional polytope, equivalent to a Hardy-like Bell inequality albeit describing a distinct quantum experiment. To illustrate its applications, we show a significant enhancement regarding threshold detection efficiencies for quantum violations also showing the use of these hybrid approach in quantum steering scenarios.

Abstract:Scientific imagination and experimental ingenuity are at the heart of physics. One of the most known instances where this interplay between theory (i.e., foundations) and experiments (i.e., technology) occurs is in the discussion of Bell's inequalities. In this paper, we present a revisitation of the violation of Bell's inequality in the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) form with entangled quantum states. First, we begin with a discussion of the 1935 Einstein-Podolski-Rosen (EPR) paradox (i.e., incompleteness of quantum mechanics) that emerges from putting the emphasis on Einstein's locality and the absolute character of physical phenomena. Second, we discuss Bell's 1971 derivation of the 1969 CHSH form of the original 1964 Bell inequality in the context of a realistic local hidden-variable theory (RLHVT). Third, identifying the quantum-mechanical spin correlation coefficient with the RLHVT one, we follow Gisin's 1991 analysis to show that quantum mechanics violates Bell's inequality when systems are in entangled quantum states. For pedagogical purposes, we show how the extent of this violation depends both on the orientation of the polarizers and the degree of entanglement of the quantum states. Fourth, we discuss the basics of the experimental verification of Bell's inequality in an actual laboratory as presented in the original 1982 Aspect-Grangier-Roger (AGR) experiment. Finally, we provide an outline of some essential take home messages from this wonderful example of physics at its best.

Abstract:Since John S. Bell demonstrated the interest of studying linear combinations of probabilities in relation with the EPR paradox in 1964, Bell inequalities have lead to numerous developments. Unfortunately, the description of Bell inequalities is subject to several degeneracies, which make any exchange of information about them unnecessarily hard. Here, we analyze these degeneracies and propose a decomposition for Bell-like inequalities based on a set of reference expressions which is not affected by them. These reference expressions set a common ground for comparing Bell inequalities. We provide algorithms based on finite group theory to compute this decomposition. Implementing these algorithms allows us to set up a compendium of reference Bell-like inequalities, available online at <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://www.faacets.com" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> . This website constitutes a platform where registered Bell-like inequalities can be explored, new inequalities can be compared to previously-known ones and relevant information on Bell inequalities can be added in a collaborative manner.

Abstract:Unitary operators are employed to investigate the violation of the Bell-CHSH inequality. The ensuing modifications affecting both classical and quantum bounds are elucidated. The relevance of a particular class of unitary operators whose expectation values are real is pointed out. For these operators, the classical and quantum bounds remain unaltered, being given, respectively, by $2$ and $2\sqrt{2}$. As an example, the Weyl unitary operators for a real scalar field in relativistic Quantum Field Theory are discussed.

Abstract:Quantum behaviour in electrical circuits Bell inequalities provide a quantitative measure that can distinguish classically determined correlations from stronger quantum correlations. Experiments on microscopic systems such as atoms and photons strongly favour the quantum description, but there has been no Bell test in a solid-state system. This paper reports clear evidence for violation of a Bell inequality (and thus quantum behaviour) in a macroscopic electrical circuit consisting of superconducting phase qubits.

Abstract:The Bell-CHSH (Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt) inequality in the vacuum state of a relativistic scalar quantum field is analyzed. Using Weyl operators built with smeared fields localized in the Rindler wedges, the Bell-CHSH inequality is expressed in terms of the Lorentz invariant inner products of test functions. A numerical framework for these inner products is devised. Causality is also explicitly checked by a numerical evaluation of the Pauli-Jordan function. Violations of the Bell-CHSH inequality are reported for different values of the particle mass parameter.

The violation of Bell’s inequality is the primary argument against the possible existence of a hidden-variabletheory as an alternative to quantum mechanics. It also serves as a convincing demonstration that a given system behaves in a truly non-classical way. The most widely accepted form of Bell’s inequality follows closely along a correlation measurement proposed by Clauser, Horne, Shimony and Holt (CHSH) in 1969. Here we present our latest attempt to implement the CHSH Bell test using Josephson phase qubits. The nature of this experiment places high demands – compared to the current state of the art in solid state qubits – on qubit performance measures such as the energy relaxation time T1, the decoherence time T2, single and two qubit gate fidelities, and measurement fidelities. Abstract:The effects of Aharonov-Casher (AC) and He-McKellar-Wilkens (HMW) phases on entangled spin-1/2 quantum systems are investigated. We use linear charge distributions positioned at the center of resulting closed orbits, capitalizing on Mach Zender-type interferometers modified with phase retarders to unveil the topological effects. We analyze how AC-HMW phases influence the Bell angles and maximal violation of Bell-CHSH inequalities (BI) without any classical interaction. We incorporate the spin and path of particles in the interferometers as observables to test noncontextual hidden variable theories against quantum mechanics, leveraging the non-local features of AC-HMW effects. Furthermore, we discuss potential implementations of our scheme in physical systems.

Abstract:Bell inequality is a vital tool to detect the nonlocal correlations, but the construction of it for multipartite systems is still a complicated problem. In this work, inspired via a decomposition of (n+1)-partite Bell inequalities into n-partite ones, we present a generalized iterative formula to construct nontrivial (n+1)-partite Ones from the n-partite ones. Our iterative formulas recover the well-known Mermin-Ardehali-Belinski-Klyshko (MABK) and other families in the literature as special cases. Moreover, a family of "dual-use" Bell inequalities proposed, in the sense that for the generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states these inequalities lead to the same quantum violation as the MABK family and, at the same time, the inequalities are able to detect the Monlocality in the entire entangled region. Furthermore, we present a generalization of the 13322 inequality to any n-partite case which is still tight, and of the 46 Sliwa's inequalities to the four-partite tight ones, by applying our iteration method to each inequality and its equivalence class.
