Abstract:We first show that for a bounded pseudoconvex domain with a manifold quotient of finite-volume in the sense of Kahler-Einstein measure, the identity component of the automorphism group of this domain is semi-simple without compact factors. This partially answers an open question in [Fra95]. Then we apply this result in different settings to solve several open problems, for examples, (1). We prove that the automorphism group of the Griffiths domain [Gri71] in ℂ^2 is discrete. This gives a complete answer to an open question raised four decades ago. (2). We show that for a contractible HHR/USq complex manifold D with a finite-volume manifold quotient M, if D contains a one-parameter group of holomorphic automorphisms and the fundamental group of M is irreducible, then D is biholomorphic to a bounded symmetric domain. This theorem can be viewed as a finite-volume version of Nadel-Frankel's solution for the Kahzdan conjecture, which has been open for years. (3). We show that for a bounded convex domain D⊂ℂ^n of C^2-smooth boundary, if D has a finite-volume manifold quotient with an irreducible fundamental group, then D is biholomorphic to the unit ball in ℂ^n, which partially solves an old conjecture of Yau. For (2) and (3) above, if the complex dimension is equal to 2, more refined results will be provided.

Abstract:We prove vanishing results for Witten genera of string generalized complete intersections in homogeneous $\text{Spin}^c$-manifolds and in other $\text{Spin}^c$-manifolds with Lie group actions. By applying these results to Fano manifolds with second Betti number equal to one we get new evidence for a conjecture of Stolz.

A Fundamental Class for Intersection Spaces of Depth One Witt Spaces

Abstract:Abstract By a theorem of Banagl–Chriestenson, intersection spaces of depth one pseudomanifolds exhibit generalized Poincaré duality of Betti numbers, provided that certain characteristic classes of the link bundles vanish. In this paper, we show that the middle-perversity intersection space of a depth one Witt space can be completed to a rational Poincaré duality space by means of a single cell attachment, provided that a certain rational Hurewicz homomorphism associated to the link bundles is surjective. Our approach continues previous work of Klimczak covering the case of isolated singularities with simply connected links. For every singular stratum, we show that our condition on the rational Hurewicz homomorphism implies that the Banagl–Chriestenson characteristic classes of the link bundle vanish. Moreover, using Sullivan minimal models, we show that the converse implication holds at least in the case that twice the dimension of the singular stratum is bounded by the dimension of the link. As an application, we compare the signature of our rational Poincaré duality space to the Goresky–MacPherson intersection homology signature of the given Witt space. We discuss our results for a class of Witt spaces having circles as their singular strata.
Integral points on varieties with infinite étale fundamental group

Abstract:We study integral points on varieties with infinite étale fundamental groups. More precisely, for a number field $F$ and $X/F$ a smooth projective variety, we prove that for any geometrically Galois cover $\varphi\colon Y \to X$ of degree at least $2\dim(X)^2$, there exists an ample line bundle $\mathscr{L}$ on $Y$ such that for a general member $D$ of the complete linear system $|\mathscr{L}|$, $D$ is geometrically irreducible and any set of $\varphi(D)$-integral points on $X$ is finite. We apply this result to varieties with infinite étale fundamental group to give new examples of irreducible, ample divisors on varieties for which finiteness of integral points is provable.

Abstract:For any almost-simple group $G$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero, we describe the automorphism group of the moduli space of semistable $G$-bundles over a connected smooth projective curve $C$ of genus at least $4$. The result is achieved by studying the singular fibers of the Hitchin fibration. As a byproduct, we provide a description of the irreducible components of two natural closed subsets in the Hitchin basis: the divisor of singular cameral curves and the divisor of singular Hitchin fibers.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface and $D$ a smooth rational ample divisor in $X$. We prove an all-genus generalization of the genus $0$ WDVV equation for primary Gromov--Witten invariants of the local 3-fold $\mathcal{O}_X(-D)$. The proof relies on a correspondence between all-genus Gromov--Witten invariants and refined Donaldson--Thomas invariants of acyclic quivers. In particular, the corresponding BPS invariants are expressed in terms of Betti numbers of moduli spaces of quiver representations.

The Bieri-Neumann-Strebel sets of quasi-projective groups

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth complex quasi-projective variety and $\Gamma=\pi_1(X)$. Let $\chi \colon \Gamma \to \mathbb{R}$ be an additive character. We prove that the ray $[\chi]$ does not belong to the BNS set $\Sigma(\Gamma)$ if and only if it comes as a pullback along an algebraic fibration $f \colon X \to \mathcal{C}$ over a quasi-projective hyperbolic orbicurve $\mathcal{C}$. We also prove that if $\pi_1(X)$ admits a solvable quotient which is not virtually nilpotent, there exists a finite étale cover $X_1 \to X$ and a fibration $f \colon X_1 \to \mathcal{C}$ over a quasi-projective hyperbolic orbicurve $\mathcal{C}$. Both of these results were proved by Delzant in the case when $X$ is a compact Kähler manifold. We deduce that $\Gamma$ is virtually solvable if and only if it is virtually nilpotent, generalising the theorems of Delzant and Arapura-Nori. As a byproduct, we prove a version of Simpson's Lefschetz Theorem for the integral leaves of logarithmic $1$-forms that do not extend to any partial compactification. We give two applications of our results. First, we strengthen the recent theorem of Cadorel-Deng-Yamanoi on virtual nilpotency of fundamental groups of quasi-projective $h$-special and weakly special manifolds. Second, we prove the sharpness of Suciu's tropical bound for the fundamental groups of smooth quasi-projective varieties and answer a question of Suciu on the topology of hyperplane arrangements.

Abstract:We initiate the study of factorization centers of birational maps, and complete it for surfaces over a perfect field in this article. We prove that for every birational automorphism $\phi : X \dashrightarrow X$ of a smooth projective surface $X$ over a perfect field $k$, the blowup centers are isomorphic to the blowdown centers in every weak factorization of $\phi$. This implies that nontrivial L-equivalences of $0$-dimensional varieties cannot be constructed based on birational automorphisms of a surface. It also implies that rationality centers are well-defined for every rational surface $X$, namely there exists a $0$-dimensional variety intrinsic to $X$, which is blown up in any rationality construction of $X$.

Abstract:For any complex reductive group $G$ and any compact Riemann surface with genus $g>1$, we show that every connected component of the associated character variety has symplectic singularities, and has terminal singularities unless $g=2$ and the Dynkin diagram of $G$ contains an $A_1$-component. We also show that the identity component is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial. The singularities caused by irreducible local systems with automorphism groups larger than the centre of $G$ are controlled by elliptic endoscopy.

Abstract:We introduce a new invariant of $G$-varieties, the dual complex, which roughly measures how divisors in the complement of the free locus intersect. We show that the top homology group of this complex is an equivariant birational invariant of $G$-varieties. As an application, we demonstrate the non-linearizability of certain large abelian group actions on smooth hypersurfaces in projective space of any dimension and degree at least $3$.

Abstract:For a fixed finite group $G$, we study the fields of definition of geometrically irreducible components of Hurwitz moduli schemes of marked branched $G$-covers of the projective line. The main focus is on determining whether components obtained by "gluing" two other components, both defined over a number field $K$, are also defined over $K$. The article presents a list of situations in which a positive answer is obtained. As an application, when $G$ is a semi-direct product of symmetric groups or the Mathieu group $M_{23}$, components defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ of small dimension ($6$ and $4$, respectively) are shown to exist.

Abstract:We prove a structure theorem for 3-manifolds with non-trivial JSJ-decomposition and 2-generated fundamental group. We deduce a variety of Corollaries. Note this is not a complete classification of such manifolds. In particular we believe that one of the families in our list is empty. Abstract:We study the étale fundamental group of a singular reduced connected curve defined over an algebraically closed field of an arbitrary prime characteristic. It is shown that when the curve is projective, the étale fundamental group is a free product of the étale fundamental group of its normalization with a free finitely generated profinite group whose rank is well determined. A similar result is established for the tame fundamental groups of seminormal affine curves. In the affine case, we provide an Abhyankar-type complete group theoretic classification on which finite groups occur as the Galois groups for Galois étale connected covers over (singular) affine curves. An analogue of the Inertia Conjecture is also posed for certain singular curves.

Abstract:In a co-evolutionary context, the survive probability of individual elements of a system depends on their relation with their neighbors. The natural selection process depends on the whole population, which is determined by local events between individuals. Particular characteristics assigned to each individual, as larger memory, usually improve the individual fitness, but an agent possess also endogenous characteristics that induce to re-evaluate her fitness landscape and choose the best-suited kind of interaction, inducing a non absolute value of the outcomes of the interaction. In this work, a novel model with agents combining memory and rational choice is introduced, where individual choices in a complex fitness landscape induce changes in the distribution of the number of agents as a function of the time. In particular, the tail of this distribution is fat compared with distributions for agents interacting only with memory.

Abstract:We show that the virtual second Betti number of a finitely generated, residually free group $G$ is finite if and only if $G$ is either free, free abelian or the fundamental group of a closed surface. We also prove a similar statement in higher dimensions. We then develop techniques involving rank gradients of pro-$p$ groups, which allow us to recognise direct product decompositions. Combining these ideas, we show that direct products of free and surface groups are profinitely rigid among finitely presented, residually free groups, partially resolving a conjecture of Bridson's. Other corollaries that we obtain include a confirmation of Mel'nikov's surface group conjecture in the residually free case, and a description of closed aspherical manifolds of dimension at least $5$ with a residually free fundamental group.

Perverse sheaves on varieties with large fundamental groups

Abstract:We conjecture that any perverse sheaf on a compact aspherical Kähler manifold has non-negative Euler characteristic. This extends the Singer-Hopf conjecture in the Kähler setting. We verify the stronger conjecture when the manifold X has non-positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. We also show that the conjecture holds when X is projective and in possession of a faithful semi-simple rigid local system. The first result is proved by expressing the Euler characteristic as an intersection number involving the characteristic cycle, and then using the curvature conditions to deduce non-negativity. For the second result, we have that the local system underlies a complex variation of Hodge structure. We then deduce the desired inequality from the curvature properties of the image of the period map.
