Pain Management Nursing
Abstract:Aim Complimentary pain management treatments have always been at the core of nursing practice. Nurses are well positioned to advocate for and expand the use of these treatments. Auricular point acupressure (APA) is a form of auriculotherapy that applies manual pressure using seed or pellet adhesive patches to specific ear acupoints. APA has been shown to be safe, effective, and feasible. It is easy to learn and simple to perform. APA can help manage a wide variety of conditions and symptoms, with this workshop focusing on the use of APA for relieving pain. Background There is a growing body of evidence in the use of APA for pain. Various published studies and systematic reviews, including several authored by one of this workshop's presenters, have shown APA to be effective, well tolerated, and feasible to administer. Method APA is underutilized with few trainings available to nurses or health care providers. This workshop will fill a large gap in providing both an introduction of APA, as well as the training needed for competency. Through completion of this workshop, a practice change will occur through attendees bringing APA back to their institutions to therefore improve pain management for all patients. Results Attendees will complete a competency quiz. After successful completion, the attendees will be issued a certificate showing completion of this workshop and gained competency in auricular acupressure. This certificate can then be submitted to their individual institution to work towards becoming privileged and credentialed in APA at their individual institution. Conclusions Through the training provided at this workshop, there will be an increased usage of APA as a pain management modality.
