Abstract:Aim Does the presence of pain management providers within community clinics result in better outcomes for patients and less burden on providers who are not specialized in pain management? Background With the opioid crisis still looming today, there are many local communities with vulnerable populations who do not have easy access to chronic pain specialty care. This results in a multitude of issues that range from more frequent emergency room visits to under or over treated pain by providers not specialized in pain management. Method A study is currently being created that will survey two sample populations. The first sample population are patients who have utilized the Nurse Practitioner run clinics in their community which will measure the degree of patient satisfaction on the quality of care, the location of treatment and the reasons why they continue care. The second sample population will be of providers who refer patients to these community pain clinics and their level of satisfaction on the quality of care provided by advanced practice providers. The surveys will be multiple choice with some open-ended questions to gather data on their experiences. Referring providers will also receive a survey with the same format as the latter population. The projected patient sample size is 100 completed surveys. The projected provider sample size is 40 completed surveys. Data will be measured and analyzed through the use of both quantitative and qualitative data with descriptive elements that provide important subjective experiences of the sample populations to the forefront. Results The anticipated findings will represent positive experiences from both patients and providers who utilize these clinics. Conclusions The projected study results are very favorable. This endeavor has gained significant momentum in the Pittsburgh region as we now have six specialized pain clinics up and running and we cannot keep up with the demand.
