Abstract:We discuss an interesting sequence defined recursively; namely, sequence A105774 from the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, and study some of its properties. Our main tools are Fibonacci representation, finite automata, and the Walnut theorem-prover. We also prove two new results about synchronized sequences.

Abstract:A $4^-$-power is a non-empty word of the form $XXXX^-$, where $X^-$ is obtained from $X$ by erasing the last letter. A binary word is called {\em faux-bonacci} if it contains no $4^-$-powers, and no factor 11. We show that faux-bonacci words bear the same relationship to the Fibonacci morphism that overlap-free words bear to the Thue-Morse morphism. We prove the analogue of Fife's Theorem for faux-bonacci words, and characterize the lexicographically least and greatest infinite faux-bonacci words.

Abstract:Morphic sequences form a natural class of infinite sequences, typically defined as the coding of a fixed point of a morphism. Different morphisms and codings may yield the same morphic sequence. This paper investigates how to prove that two such representations of a morphic sequence by morphisms represent the same sequence. In particular, we focus on the smallest representations of the subsequences of the binary Fibonacci sequence obtained by only taking the even or odd elements. The proofs we give are induction proofs of several properties simultaneously, and are typically found fully automatically by a tool that we developed.

Abstract:Consider the generalized Fibonacci sequence {qn}n=0∞ having initial conditions q0=0,q1=1 and recurrence relation qn=aqn-1+qn-2 (when n is even) or qn=bqn-1+qn-2 (when n is odd), where a and b are nonzero real numbers. These sequences arise in a natural way in the study of continued fractions of quadratic irrationals and combinatorics on words or dynamical system theory. Some well-known sequences are special cases of this generalization. The Fibonacci sequence is a special case of {qn} with a=b=1. Pell’s sequence is {qn} with a=b=2 and the k-Fibonacci sequence is {qn} with a=b=k. In this article, we study numerous new properties of these sequences and investigate a sequence closely related to these sequences which can be regarded as a generalization of Lucas sequence of the first kind.

Optimal Almost-Balanced Sequences

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach to address the constrained coding challenge of generating almost-balanced sequences. While strictly balanced sequences have been well studied in the past, the problem of designing efficient algorithms with small redundancy, preferably constant or even a single bit, for almost balanced sequences has remained unsolved. A sequence is $\varepsilon(n)$-almost balanced if its Hamming weight is between $0.5n\pm \varepsilon(n)$. It is known that for any algorithm with a constant number of bits, $\varepsilon(n)$ has to be in the order of $\Theta(\sqrt{n})$, with $O(n)$ average time complexity. However, prior solutions with a single redundancy bit required $\varepsilon(n)$ to be a linear shift from $n/2$. Employing an iterative method and arithmetic coding, our emphasis lies in constructing almost balanced codes with a single redundancy bit. Notably, our method surpasses previous approaches by achieving the optimal balanced order of $\Theta(\sqrt{n})$. Additionally, we extend our method to the non-binary case considering $q$-ary almost polarity-balanced sequences for even $q$, and almost symbol-balanced for $q=4$. Our work marks the first asymptotically optimal solutions for almost-balanced sequences, for both, binary and non-binary alphabet.

Abstract:We look at a family of meta-Fibonacci sequences which arise in studying the number of leaves at the largest level in certain infinite sequences of binary trees, restricted compositions of an integer, and binary compact codes. For this family of meta-Fibonacci sequences and two families of related sequences we derive ordinary generating functions and recurrence relations. Included in these families of sequences are several well-known sequences in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS).

Abstract:In array-based DNA synthesis, multiple strands of DNA are synthesized in parallel to reduce the time cost from the sum of their lengths to the length their shortest common supersequences. To maximize the amount of information that can be synthesized into DNA within a finite amount of time, we study the number of unordered sets of $n$ strands of DNA that have a common supersequence whose length is at most $t$. Our analysis stems from the following connection: The number of subsequences of A C G T A C G T A C G T ... is the partial sum (prefix sum) of the fourth-order Fibonacci numbers.

Abstract:This paper describes a class of sequences that are in many ways similar to Fibonacci sequences: given n, sum the previous two terms and divide them by the largest possible power of n. The behavior of such sequences depends on n. We analyze these sequences for small n: 2, 3, 4, and 5. Surprisingly these behaviors are very different. We also talk about any n. Many statements about these sequences are difficult or impossible to prove, but they can be supported by probabilistic arguments, we have plenty of those in this paper. We also introduce ten new sequences. Most of the new sequences are also related to Fibonacci numbers proper, not just free Fibonacci numbers.

Abstract:Divisibility sequences are defined by the property that their elements divide each other whenever their indices do. The divisibility sequences that also satisfy a linear recurrence, like the Fibonacci numbers, are generated by polynomials that divide their compositions with every positive integer power. We completely characterize such polynomials in terms of their factorizations into cyclotomic polynomials using labeled Hasse diagrams, and construct new integer divisibility sequences based on them. We also show that, unlike the Fibonacci numbers, these non-classical sequences do not have the property of strong divisibility.

Abstract:A second order polynomial sequence is of Fibonacci-type $\mathcal{F}_{n}$ (Lucas-type $\mathcal{L}_{n}$) if its Binet formula has a structure similar to that for Fibonacci (Lucas) numbers. Under certain conditions these polynomials are irreducible if and only if $n$ is a prime number. For example, the Fibonacci polynomials, Pell polynomials, Fermat polynomials, Lucas polynomials, Pell-Lucas polynomials, Fermat-Lucas polynomials are irreducible when $n$ is a prime number; and Chebyshev polynomials (second kind), Morgan-Voyce polynomials (Fibonacci type), and Vieta polynomials are reducible when $n$ is a prime number. In this paper we give some theorems to determine whether the Fibonacci type polynomials and Lucas type polynomials are irreducible when $n$ is prime.

Abstract:For an arbitrary homogeneous linear recurrence sequence of order d with constant coefficients, we derive recurrence relations for all subsequences with indices in arithmetic progression. The coefficients of these recurrences are given explicitly in terms of partial Bell polynomials that depend on at most d-1 terms of the generalized Lucas sequence associated with the given recurrence. We also provide an elegant formula for the partial sums of such sequences and illustrate all of our results with examples of various orders, including common generalizations of the Fibonacci numbers.

Abstract:Based on the combinatorial interpretation of the ordered Bell numbers, which count all the ordered partitions of the set $[n]=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$, we introduce the Fibonacci partition as a Fibonacci permutation of its blocks. Then we define the Fibonacci-Fubini numbers that count the total number of Fibonacci partitions of $[n]$. We study the classical properties of this sequence (generating function, explicit and Dobiński-like formula, etc.), we give combinatorial interpretation, and we extensively examine the Fibonacci-Fubini arithmetic triangle. We give some associate linear recurrence sequences, where in some sequences the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds appear as well.

Abstract:We define an infinite sequence of generalizations, parametrized by an integer m ≥ 1 m \ge 1 , of the Stieltjes–Rogers and Thron–Rogers polynomials; they arise as the power-series expansions of some branched continued fractions, and as the generating polynomials for m m -Dyck and m m -Schröder paths with height-dependent weights. We prove that all of these sequences of polynomials are coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive, jointly in all the (infinitely many) indeterminates. We then apply this theory to prove the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity for combinatorially interesting sequences of polynomials. Enumeration of unlabeled ordered trees and forests gives rise to multivariate Fuss–Narayana polynomials and Fuss–Narayana symmetric functions. Enumeration of increasing (labeled) ordered trees and forests gives rise to multivariate Eulerian polynomials and Eulerian symmetric functions, which include the univariate m m th-order Eulerian polynomials as specializations. We also find branched continued fractions for ratios of contiguous hypergeometric series r F s {}_r \! F_s for arbitrary r r and s s , which generalize Gauss’ continued fraction for ratios of contiguous 2 F 1 {}_2 \! F_1 ; and for s = 0 s=0 we prove the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity. Finally, we extend the branched continued fractions to ratios of contiguous basic hypergeometric series r φ s {}_r \! \phi _s .

Pseduo-Random and de Bruijn Array Codes

Abstract:Pseudo-random arrays and perfect maps are the two-dimensional analogs of M-sequences and de Bruijn sequences, respectively. We modify the definitions to be applied to codes. These codes are also the two-dimensional analogs of certain factors in the de Bruijn graph. These factors are called zero factors and perfect factors in the de Bruijn graph. We apply a folding technique to construct pseudo-random array codes and examine the minimum distance of the constructed codes. The folding is applied on sequences generated from irreducible polynomials or a product of irreducible polynomials with the same degree and the same exponent. Direct and recursive constructions for de Bruijn array codes are presented and discussed.

Abstract:We begin by considering a sequence of polynomials in three variables whose coefficients count restricted binary overpartitions with certain properties. We then concentrate on two specific subsequences that are closely related to the Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds, deriving combinatorial and algebraic properties of some special cases. We show that the zeros of these polynomial sequences lie on certain algebraic curves, some of which we study in greater detail. Finally, we extend part of this work to restricted $b$-ary overpartitions for arbitrary integers $b\geq 2$.

Abstract:We define a new class of ternary sequences that are 2-balanced. These sequences are obtained by colouring of Sturmian sequences. We show that the class contains sequences of any given letter frequencies. We provide an upper bound on factor and abelian complexity of these sequences. Using the interpretation by rectangle exchange transformation, we prove that for almost all triples of letter frequencies, the upper bound on factor and abelian complexity is reached. The bound on factor complexity is given using a number-theoretical function which we compute explicitly for a class of parameters.
