Abstract:This work is devoted to condensed matter chemistry in gas-phase catalytic reactions over zeolite catalysts, which mainly involve in the processes of (i) adsorption of gaseous reactants into zeolite micropores, (ii) conversion of the reactants on catalytic sites in zeolites, and ( iii) desorption of products in zeolites. In the above processes, both fast adsorption in zeolite micropores and rapid desorption from zeolites can significantly improve the reaction rate. To realize these purposes, it has been developed new strategies for rational synthesis of zeolites including preparation of zeolite nanocrystals, introduction of mesopores into zeolite crystals, preparation of zeolite nanosheets, and adjusting wettability of zeolite crystals, which have been simply concluded. Furthermore, the catalytically active sites including single atoms and metal nanoparticles can be introduced into zeolite frameworks or zeolite crystals, which can combine both the advantages of high stability and excellent shape selectivity for zeolites and the advantages of high activity and anti-deactivation for metal species together, offering a good opportunity to design and preparation of new highly efficient zeolite-based catalysts in the future. Finally, it is suggested perspectives such as rational synthesis of zeolite catalysts by theoretical simulations from the energy comparison, preparation of highly efficient catalysts by incorporating catalytically active sites in zeolite framework from the requirements of catalytic reactions, and green synthesis of zeolites for reduction of harmful gases, polluted water, and solid wastes in industrial processes.

Abstract:Zeolites are versatile catalysts not only for large scale petrochemical processes but also in applications related to fine chemicals synthesis, biomass conversion and CO2 utilization. Introduction of mesopores and heteroatoms opens up additional applications. Heteroatoms in the crystalline framework create active sites where the diversity in the coordination offers tunability in acidity and redox properties. Their framework locations within the unit cell and their open/closed nature greatly influence the catalytic ability. Depending on the synthesis conditions, the properties of the pore walls can vary from hydrophobic to hydrophilic which affects the confinement of reactant and solvent molecules within the well-ordered pores. This mini-review traces the synthesis of heteroatom zeolites from traditional solvent-based methods to the more sustainable routes of post-synthesis and mechanochemistry. The properties of the zeolites formed by the different methods are compared and the impact on selected catalytic reactions is discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Rational design synthesis of zeolite catalysts with effective, environmentally benign, atom-economic routes is one of the main research subjects in the scientific field of microporous materials, to avoid the high labor cost and inefficiency of traditional trial-and-error methods involved developing new structures and also to dispel the environmental concerns in industrial mass production of zeolites. On the other hand, being response to the new requirements from petrochemical and fine chemical industries, such as more precise control of product distribution and the supplementary of low-carbon resources for chemical production, as well as the increasingly severe environment problems related to CO2, NOx, etc., the catalytic applications of zeolite materials have expanded from conventional single functionality as solid acids or selective oxidation catalysts to bi/multi-functionality through the combination with metals or metal oxides. Thus, based on the systematic knowledge of zeolite chemistry and science that the researchers have acquired in the past half century as well as the development requirement, remarkable progress has been made in both zeolite synthesis and catalysis in the past 10 years, including the manipulation of zeolitic monolayers derived from layered zeolites and germanosilicates to construct novel zeolite materials, the effective and green zeolite synthesis methods, the synergistic interaction of zeolite and metal/metal oxide with different space distributions in the conversion of low-carbon resources. With a large number of novel zeolite catalysts and catalytic processes being developed, the understanding of the close relationship among zeolite synthesis, structure and catalytic property has been deepened and the researchers are step by step approaching the goal of rationally designing zeolite catalysts with precisely controlled activity and selectivity and with promising applications as well.

New trends in tailoring active sites in zeolite-based catalysts

Abstract:This review addresses the recent developments and trends in tailoring the nature and local properties of active sites in zeolite-based catalysts, with a special focus on novel extra-large pore, layered (2D), nanocrystalline, and hierarchical (mesoporous) zeolites with enhanced pore accessibility. In the first part of the review, we discuss the latest achievements in the bottom-up (direct synthesis) and top-down (post-synthesis) approaches for isomorphous substitution in zeolites enabling control over the type (Brønsted, Lewis, or both), amount, strength, and location of acid sites. The benefits in catalysis provided by such zeolites with tuned acidity and improved accessibility are shown for different acid-catalyzed reactions involving bulky molecules, as in the synthesis of fine chemicals and biomass transformations. The incorporation of metal species of different sizes (increasing from single atoms to clusters and to nanoparticles) in zeolites allows expanding the set of reactions catalyzed by these materials. The main preparation strategies for designing metal-zeolite catalysts, especially those offering control over the size of the metal species, and their catalytic behaviour in industrially relevant and emerging sustainable catalytic processes are dealt with in the second part of the review. Particular attention is paid to the stabilization of size-controlled small metal clusters and nanoparticles through their encapsulation in the voids of zeolite frameworks as well as to the dynamic behaviour of the metal species under reactive environments with important implications in catalysis. The need for using advanced operando spectroscopic and imaging tools to unveil the precise nature and functioning of the active sites in working zeolites is emphasized. The information gathered in this review is expected to provide guidance for developing more efficient zeolite-based catalysts for existing and new applications.

Abstract:Zeolites with well-defined micropores have been widely used as heterogeneous catalysts in the fields of petroleum refining, fine chemicals, and environment protection. However, the sole micropores in the zeolite structures usually impose diffusion constraints, which would greatly influence their catalytic performances. Therefore, it is highly desirable to shorten the diffusion pathway of zeolites and thus eliminate the diffusion constraints. One of the efficient methods is to synthesize zeolite nanosheets, which has become a hot topic in the past decades. In this tutorial review, the recent progresses in the synthesis of zeolite nanosheets and their relevant catalysis are briefly discussed. Various strategies for the synthesis of zeolite nanosheets are summarized including delamination, templated crystallization, additive-assisted synthesis, seed-directed synthesis, and gaseous expansion synthesis. In addition, the catalytic reactions of zeolite nanosheets with acidic and metal sites are also outlined. This tutorial review should be significant for the design and preparation of highly efficient zeolite catalysts.

Abstract:Great interest has been invoked by the concept of mesoporous zeolites in the past years. By incorporating additional mesoporosity into the intrinsic microporosity of zeolites, a hierarchical pore system appears, which facilitates mass transfer with an enhanced accessibility, giving rise to improved catalytic activity in reactions that usually suffer from steric or diffusional limitations. To tailor the pore architecture of mesoporous zeolites, a great number of synthesis strategies have been exploited so far. These fascinating zeolites have also found their huge potentials in a wide variety of application fields, especially in catalysis. In this chapter, we present a general overview of diverse synthesis approaches for the fabrication of mesoporous zeolites and their catalytic application in various reactions classified by different reaction types.

Abstract:Zeolites are nanoporous aluminosilicates with well-defined crystalline structures, considered key assets in heterogeneous catalysis, with a broad range of industrial applications. Computational investigations dealing with zeolite catalysts have been undertaken for decades with simple models of the bulk sites, known to be bridging Si<sub>IV</sub>–OH–Al<sub>IV</sub> groups, in the case where the compensation cation is a proton. Real zeolite catalysts used in practice are however finite size and intricate objects, with external surface sites and defects, among other sources of complexity. Amorphous silica–alumina may also be obtained as a consequence of zeolite post-treatments or synthesized on purpose to obtain acid sites that are milder than those of zeolites. In the present Perspective, some of the achievements in the field of the atomic-scale simulation of intricate aluminosilicate catalysts (zeolites, amorphous silica–aluminas) of industrial relevance are reviewed. Emphasis is put on the simulation of the mechanisms of post-treatments of zeolites, and on the special structure and reactivity of acid sites at external surfaces of zeolites and on amorphous silica–alumina, that is shown to differ from the properties of the bulk bridging sites. Moreover, directions for future investigations are proposed.

Abstract:ConspectusLoading metal nanoparticles on the surface of solid supports has emerged as an efficient route for the preparation of heterogeneous catalysts. Notably, most of these supported metal nanoparticles still have shortcomings such as dissatisfactory activity and low product selectivity in catalysis. In addition, these metal nanoparticles also suffer from deactivation because of nanoparticle sintering, leaching, and coke formation under harsh conditions. The fixation of metal nanoparticles within zeolite crystals should have advantages of high activities for metal nanoparticles and excellent shape selectivity for zeolite micropores as well as extraordinary stability of metal nanoparticles immobilized with a stable zeolite framework, which is a good solution for the shortcomings of supported metal nanoparticles.Materials with metal nanostructures within the zeolite crystals are normally denoted as metal@zeolite, where the metal nanoparticles with diameters similar to those of industrial catalysts are usually larger than the micropore size. These metal nanoparticles are enveloped with the zeolite rigid framework to prevent migration under harsh reaction conditions, which is described as a fixed structure. The zeolite micropores allow the diffusion of reactants to the metal nanoparticles. As a result, metal@zeolite catalysts combine the features of both metal nanoparticles (high activity) and zeolites (shape selectivity and thermal stability), compared with the supported metal nanoparticles.In this Account, we describe how the zeolite micropore and metal nanoparticle synergistically work to improve the catalytic performance by the preparation of a variety of metal@zeolite catalysts. Multiple functions of zeolites with respect to the metal nanoparticles are highlighted, including control of the reactant/product diffusion in the micropores, the adjustment of reactant adsorption on the metal nanoparticles, and sieving the reactants and products with zeolite micropores. Furthermore, by optimizing the wettability of the zeolite external surface, the zeolite crystals could form a nanoreactor to efficiently enrich the crucial intermediates, thus boosting the performance in low-temperature methane oxidation. Also, the microporous confinement weakens the adsorption of C1 intermediates on the metal sites, accelerating the C-C coupling to improve C2 oxygenate productivity in syngas conversion. In particular, the zeolite framework efficiently stabilizes the metal nanoparticles against sintering and leaching to give durable catalysts. Clearly, this strategy not only guides the rational design of efficient heterogeneous catalysts for potential applications in a variety of industrial chemical reactions but also accelerates the fundamental understanding of the catalytic mechanisms by providing new model catalysts.

Abstract:The recent research developments on the active sites in Fe-zeolites for redox catalysis are discussed. Building on the characterisation of the α-Fe/α-O active sites in the beta and chabazite zeolites, we demonstrate a bottom-up approach to successfully understand and develop Fe-zeolite catalysts. We use the room temperature benzene to phenol reaction as a relevant example. We then suggest how the spectroscopic identification of other monomeric and dimeric iron sites could be tackled. The challenges in the characterisation of active sites and intermediates in NOX selective catalytic reduction catalysts and further development of catalysts for mild partial methane oxidation are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Microporous acid catalysts are extensively used in the chemical industry because of their high activity and unique shape-selectivity induced by frameworks with molecular-sized voids. However, it remains a challenge to tailor catalytic activity by choice of pore structure and acid strength. In this theoretical work we aim at extracting trends in how zeotype-catalyzed reactions are influenced by reactivity of Bronsted acid sites and framework topology. Using olefin-methanol reactions as an example, we consider a number of elementary steps across 21 zeotype materials of three different topologies. Density functional theory was employed to calculate the enthalpies of transition states (TSs) and establish scaling relations across catalyst acid strength and framework topology, using the ammonia heat of adsorption as a descriptor of acid-site reactivity. The results indicate that when cation-like TSs are increasingly stabilized by dispersion interactions with the framework, they become less sensitive to changes in the reactivity of acid sites. It is crucial to further investigate this finding to ultimately be able to tailor the activity of zeotype acid catalysts, appreciating the influence of both framework topology and acid strength.

Abstract:Understanding the detailed mechanistic pathways of zeolite-catalyzed reactions enables high activity and product selectivity of desired transformations, crucial for the development of more sustainable and benign methods. However, gaining the knowledge required to delineate detailed mechanisms for these reactions is challenging because of difficulties associated with elucidating the nature of dynamically evolving products and transient intermediates. Approaches in which in situ techniques are combined with two-dimensional correlation analysis have now been developed that enable a clearer analysis of the mechanistic pathways for oxygenate-based zeolite-catalyzed reactions of C1 molecules.

Abstract:The fixation of metal nanoparticles into zeolite crystals has emerged as a new series of heterogeneous catalysts, giving performances that steadily outperform the generally supported catalysts in many important reactions. In this outlook, we define different noble metal-in-zeolite structures (metal@zeolite) according to the size of the nanoparticles and their relative location to the micropores. The metal species within the micropores and those larger than the micropores are denoted as encapsulated and fixed structures, respectively. The development in the strategies for the construction of metal@zeolite hybrid materials is briefly summarized in this work, where the rational preparation and improved thermal stability of the metal nanostructures are particularly mentioned. More importantly, these metal@zeolite hybrid materials as catalysts exhibit excellent shape selectivity. Finally, we review the current challenges and future perspectives for these metal@zeolite catalysts.

Abstract:Increasing social sustainability triggers the persistent progress of industrial catalysis in energy transformation and chemical production. Zeolites have been demonstrated to be pivotal catalysts in chemical industries due to their moderate acidity and versatile well-defined pore structures. However, in the context of enhancing the performances of zeolite catalysts, the perspectives on the diffusion regulations within the pores and channels in the bulk phases or external surfaces of the zeolites are often overlooked. Establishing the structure-transport-reactivity relationships in heterogeneous catalysis can provide rational guidelines to design high-performance catalysts. Herein, this tutorial review attempts to systematically depict an integrated picture of molecular transport behaviors in zeolite catalysts from macroscopic to microscopic perspectives. The advances in the accurate diffusion measurements employing both macroscopic and microscopic techniques are briefly introduced. The diffusion characteristics in zeolite catalysts under working conditions (e.g., high temperature, multi-components, and reaction coupling) are then addressed. The macroscopic internal diffusion and the microscopic diffusion occurring in the micro-zones of zeolite crystals (e.g., surface diffusion, diffusion anisotropy, and confined diffusion) are reviewed and discussed in more detail. These diffusion behaviors highly impact the underlying reaction mechanism, catalytic performances, and catalyst optimization strategies. Finally, the multi-type pore systems of practical zeolite catalysts in industrial reactors and their transport behaviors are analyzed. The fully-crystalline monolithic zeolites in the absence of binders are highlighted as rising-star catalytic materials for industrial applications. The research challenges in this field and the potential future development directions are summarized.

Abstract:Zeolite-based materials play critical roles to develop new technologies toward renewable energy and environmental improvement to face the global sustainability from rapid industrial development and population increase in the new century. In the past decade, novel approaches for the preparation of zeolites have been designed from the concept of green chemistry, and new insights on zeolites frameworks have been revealed by the new techniques. Furthermore, the wettability of zeolite and consequent sorption/diffusion were demonstrated as important roles in the catalytic processes, which are quietly different from the classical behaviors of zeolites. We believe that these nonclassical advances in synthesis, structure, and catalytic performance could benefit for the understanding on crystallization of zeolites and framework characters, and consequently, the design of efficient zeolite-based materials for energy and environmental improvement.

Abstract:Amongst the current developments in the field of hierarchical pore structures, the creation of mesopores in zeolite crystals is the most frequently employed way to combine micropores with mesopores in one material. In this review an overview is presented of the different approaches to generate and characterize mesopores in zeolite crystals and establish their impact on the catalytic action. Mesopores can be created via several routes from which steaming and acid leaching are the most frequently applied. Novel approaches using secondary carbon templates that are removed after synthesis have recently been launched. For the characterization of mesopores, nitrogen physisorption and electron microscopy are commonly used. More recently, it was shown that electron tomography, a form of three-dimensional transmission electron microscopy, is able to reveal the three-dimensional shape, size, and connectivity of the mesopores. The effect of the presence of mesopores for catalysis is demonstrated for several industrially applied processes that make use of zeolite catalysts: the cracking of heavy oil fractions over zeolite Y, the production of cumene and hydroisomerization of alkanes over mordenite, and synthesis of fine chemicals over Y, ZSM-5, and Beta. For these processes, the mesopores ensure an optimal accessibility and transport of reactants and products, while the zeolite micropores induce the preferred shape-selective properties.

Abstract:Subnanometric metal species (single atoms and clusters) have been demonstrated to be unique compared with their nanoparticulate counterparts. However, the poor stabilization of subnanometric metal species towards sintering at high temperature (>500 °C) under oxidative or reductive reaction conditions limits their catalytic application. Zeolites can serve as an ideal support to stabilize subnanometric metal catalysts, but it is challenging to localize subnanometric metal species on specific sites and modulate their reactivity. We have achieved a very high preference for localization of highly stable subnanometric Pt and PtSn clusters in the sinusoidal channels of purely siliceous MFI zeolite, as revealed by atomically resolved electron microscopy combining high-angle annular dark-field and integrated differential phase contrast imaging techniques. These catalysts show very high stability, selectivity and activity for the industrially important dehydrogenation of propane to form propylene. This stabilization strategy could be extended to other crystalline porous materials.

Hierarchically porous zeolite single crystals with fully interconnected, ordered and tunable multimodal porosity at macro-, meso- and micro-length scale like in leaves offer the ideal solution. However, their synthesis remains highly challenging. Here we report a versatile confined zeolite crystallization process to achieve these superior properties. Such bio-inspired zeolite single crystals lead to significantly improved mass transport properties by shortening the diffusion length while maintaining shape selective properties, endowing them with an unprecedentedly high efficiency of zeolite crystals, enhanced catalytic activities and cycle time, highly reduced coke formation and reduced deactivation rate in bulky-molecule reactions and methanol-to-olefins process. Their industrial utilization can lead to the design of innovative and intensified reactors and processes with highly enhanced efficiency and minimum energy consumption.
