Abstract:Atomic dispersed metal sites in single-atom catalysts are highly mobile and easily sintered to form large particles, which deteriorates the catalytic performance severely. Moreover, lack of criterion concerning the role of the metal-support interface prevents more efficient and wide application. Here, a general strategy is reported to synthesize stable single atom catalysts by crafting on a variety of cobalt-based nanoarrays with precisely controlled architectures and compositions. The highly uniform, well-aligned, and densely packed nanoarrays provide abundant oxygen vacancies (17.48%) for trapping Pd single atoms and lead to the creation of 3D configured catalysts, which exhibit very competitive activity toward low temperature CO oxidation (100% conversion at 90 degrees C) and prominent long-term stability (continuous conversion at 60 degrees C for 118 h). Theoretical calculations show that O vacancies at high-index {112} facet of Co(x)O(y)nanocrystallite are preferential sites for trapping single atoms, which guarantee strong interface adhesion of Pd species to cobalt-based support and play a pivotal role in preventing the decrement of activity, even under moisture-rich conditions (approximate to 2% water vapor). The progress presents a promising opportunity for tailoring catalytic properties consistent with the specific demand on target process, beyond a facile design with a tunable metal-support interface.
Constructing Directional Component Distribution in a Bifunctional Catalyst to Boost the Tandem Reaction of Syngas Conversion

Abstract:Controlling the formation, diffusion, and conversion of bridging intermediate is important for improving the performance of a tandem reaction over a multi-component catalyst. However, it remains highly challenging because the random distribution of catalytic components via conventional mechanical combination usually endows nondirectional diffusion, resulting in an obvious decrease in catalytic performance. Here, we report a recrystallization methodology dealing with the extruded Cr2O3/ZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst to distribute the oxide on zeolite in an oriented manner. It is confirmed that Cr2O3 preferentially locates on the ( 100) and (101) surfaces of plate-like ZSM-5 and that the (010) surface is highly exposed. Hence, the diffusion of the bridging intermediate and products is modulated in a directional way, boosting the tandem reaction of CO conversion to aromatics. A 2.99 mmol g(-1) h(-1) formation rate of aromatic rings (on carbon base) at a 49.4% CO conversion is achieved over the recrystallized catalyst, which is the highest performance data yet reported.
Resolving the Intricate Mechanism and Selectivity of Syngas Conversion on Reduced ZnCr 2 O x : A Quantitative Study from DFT and Microkinetic Simulations

Abstract:By combining reduced oxide and zeolite (e.g., ZnCrOx/MSAPO), bifunctional catalysts achieve outstanding olefin selectivity for syngas conversion via a relay process (CO + H2 → IM → olefin) and are one of the hottest catalytic systems. However, the reaction mechanism on the reduced ZnCrOx as well as the intermediate (IM = ketene versus methanol) entering the zeolite are under heated debate owing to the complexity of this system. Herein, we perform systematic density functional theory (DFT) calculations and microkinetic simulations to inspect the possible elementary steps on the highly reduced ZnCr2O4(110) surface, which quantitatively unveils the favored reaction pathways for CO activation and conversion. We find that CO tends to adsorb at the two-coordinate O vacancy sites (VO 2C) and reacts with H at VO 2C to form CHO, while the disproportionation reaction and the direct C–O cleavage are less favored. Importantly, the conversion of CHO plays a vital role in product selectivity; the dissociation of CHO is identified to proceed easily and constitutes a major route responsible for the formation of CH4 and CH2CO, through the following pathway: CHO → CH + O; CH + H → CH2; CH2 + CO → CH2CO; or CH2 + 2H → CH4. Alternatively, CHO could undergo hydrogenation to give CH2O and CH3O intermediates, eventually leading to the formation of CH3OH and CH4. The kinetic analyses on such a complex reaction network disclose that CH4 is the dominant product, while both CH2CO and CH3OH (i.e., two experimentally controversial intermediates) exist in minority with CH2CO being relatively more readily formed. More interestingly, the kinetic model illustrates that the selectivity for CH2CO and the formation of triggered light olefins can be significantly improved over CH4 if a reaction channel converts CH2CO to light olefins when zeolite is added, providing insight into the bifunctionality of the oxide/zeolite system. Also, we demonstrate that high VO 2C coverage is a prerequisite for high activity of CO activation, and the reason for high selectivity of CO2 and low selectivity of H2O is identified to the easier removal of the lattice oxygen by CO to generate CO2 than by H2 to generate H2O. Abstract:One-step conversion of syngas to aromatics (STA) over an oxide-zeolite bifunctional catalyst is promising as an alternative route for aromatic production. Control of aromatic distribution and enhancement of benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) selectivity are still a big challenge. Decoupling the complex reaction network, the relative activity of aromatization and alkylation on ZSM-5 determines the aromatic distribution. Herein, the STA reaction was studied over Cr2O3/ZSM-5 to reveal the influence of the zeolite morphology parameters on aromatic distribution. Using the "substitution ratio of aromatic ring" SC9+/A to reflect the relative rate of alkylation to aromatization, the linear dependence of SC9+/A on the morphology parameter (1/b) of ZSM5 was revealed. The methodology for control of aromatic distribution by altering the crystal size of ZSM-5 along the b-axis is then proposed. By further enhancing the aromatization activity via ion exchange of Zn to ZSM-5, a bifunctional catalyst showing a high BTX space time yield of 2.47 mmol g(-1) h(-1) (on carbon base) with 49.1% BTX fraction is developed.
Role of Residual CO Molecules in OX–ZEO Relay Catalysis for Syngas Direct Conversion

Abstract:The traditional Fischer–Tropsch synthesis generates products with a distribution that follows a theoretical restriction, suffering from low selectivity toward desired products. Recent use of metal oxide–zeolite bifunctional catalysts has allowed a break of such a restriction, accompanied by residual CO molecules. In these systems, CO conversion is usually low and the presence of residual CO molecules would accompany the diffusion of intermediates into the zeolite pores and the subsequent transformation. However, the relationship between CO and the selectivity is elusive. Herein, in a CoMn oxides/H-β zeolite system, we demonstrate that CO molecules could not only improve the strength of the acidity and increase the ratio of B acid sites to L acid sites of the zeolite but also help to stabilize the intermediate allylic carbonium ion. Hence, high selectivities of 73.5% toward iso-paraffins and 61.2% toward isobutane were achieved. Abstract:The migration of bridging intermediates (methanol) from oxides to zeolites is crucial in the direct conversion of syngas to light olefins via the tandem process. As the initiation step of this migration, the adsorption and desorption effect of methanol on oxide components remains elusive. Herein, we systematically compared the catalytic performances of the syngas conversion on a series of ZnAlOx oxides with different Zn/Al ratios and the corresponding bi-component catalysts integrated with the AlPO-18 zeolite component. The structures and surface acidity of ZnAlOx oxides were characterized by XANES, STEM, and py-IR, and the adsorption behavior of methanol on ZnAlOx oxides was characterized by in situ infrared spectroscopy. It is confirmed that the ZnAl2O4 spinel surface is the intrinsic active site for CO activation while the strong Lewis acid sites of the oxide surface adsorb methanol strongly, serving as "traps" to inhibit methanol desorption. The additional Zn-containing phase in ZnAlOx oxides with the Zn/Al ratio higher than the stoichiometry of spinel ZnAl2O4 is identified as the ZnO component to cover the strong acid sites of the oxide surface and thus enhance the desorption of methanol, benefiting toward the higher catalytic performance of the syngas conversion. A high CO conversion of 41.6% with a C2- C4 olefin selectivity of 79.3% is achieved when the Zn/Al ratio of oxide is 1, and the C2-C4 olefin space time yield reaches 147.0 g kgcat-1 h-1. The anti-trap effect for bridging intermediates on oxide components is thus proposed in bifunctional catalysis, which serves as an effective strategy to exploit and design more efficient multifunctional catalytic systems.

Abstract:Carbonylation, an important reaction to realize controllable carbon chain growth by C–C coupling, is highly attractive but challenging due to the rapid deactivation behavior. HSUZ-4 zeolite is a new candidate with a high durability for catalyzing dimethyl ether (DME) carbonylation. However, its industrial application is still impeded because of the low activity. In the present paper, the activity of DME carbonylation over rod-shaped HSUZ-4 zeolite can be significantly improved by adjusting the acid distribution. Results show that the DME carbonylation performance over rod-shaped HSUZ-4 zeolite was determined by the synergistic effect of the acid concentration and the number of 8-MR pore openings. Furthermore, we firstly revealed that the carbonylation reaction occurs preferentially at T1-O12 site located in 8-MR with a quantum-chemical method. Additionally, we discovered that the activity of HSUZ-4 zeolite can be further improved by promoting the crystal growth along the c axis because more 8-MR channels are exposed. This work will provide a detailed theoretical guidance for the rational designing and fabricating more efficient catalysts for the carbonylation reaction, which is highly attractive but remains challenge for the synthesis of C2+ oxygenate chemicals from syngas and/or CO2.

Abstract:The emerging oxide–zeolite bifunctional catalysis for direct syngas conversion has drawn extensive interest, both academically and industrially, with further exploration urging a clear mechanistic understanding of this complex catalytic network. Herein, using a specially designed quasi-in situ, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance-gas chromatography/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis strategy, this reaction is fully monitored from the very early induction period to steady-state conversion under high-pressure flow-reaction conditions, using ZnAlO x /H-ZSM-5 composites as model catalysts. We identify abundant critical and/or transient intermediates in dynamic evolution, including carboxylates, alkoxyls, acid-bounded methyl-cyclopentenones and methyl-cyclopentenyl carbocations, providing direct evidence of vigorous regulation by unique, oxygenate-based pathways of the reaction network. This proposed mechanism overturns the general cognition of oxide–zeolite reactions as simple tandem catalysis, and highlights the many roles (both positive and negative) of CO and H 2 molecules via oxygenate-based routes, thus dictating the final product. The current characterization technology and its mechanistic understanding would benefit further exploration in bifunctional catalysis.

Abstract:Even though the direct hydrogenation of CO2 into aromatics has been realized via a methanol-mediated pathway and multifunctional catalyst, few works have been focused on the simultaneously rational design of each component in multifunctional catalyst to improve the performance. Also, the structure-function relationship between aromatics synthesis performance and the different catalytic components (reducible metal oxide and acidic zeolite) has been rarely investigated. Herein, we increase the oxygen vacancy (Ov ) density in reducible Cr2 O3 by sequential carbonization and oxidation (SCO) treatments of Cr-based metal-organic frameworks. Thanks to the enriched Ov , Cr2 O3 -based catalyst affords high methanol selectivity of 98.1 % (without CO) at a CO2 conversion of 16.8 % under high reaction temperature (350 °C). Furthermore, after combining with the acidic zeolite H-ZSM-5, the multifunctional catalyst realizes the direct conversion of CO2 into aromatics with conversion and selectivity as high as 25.4 % and 80.1 % (without CO), respectively. The property of acid site in H-ZSM-5, especially the Al species that located at the intersection of straight and sinusoidal channels, plays a vital role in enhancing the aromatics selectivity, which can be precisely controlled by varying the hydrothermal synthesis conditions. Our work provides a synergistic strategy to boost the aromatics synthesis performance from CO2 hydrogenation.
Dynamic coordination of cations and catalytic selectivity on zinc–chromium oxide alloys during syngas conversion

Abstract:Metal oxide alloys (for example AxByOz) exhibit dramatically different catalytic properties in response to small changes in composition (the A:B ratio). Here, we show that for the ternary zinc–chromium oxide (ZnCrO) catalysts the activity and selectivity during syngas (CO/H2) conversion strongly depend on the Zn:Cr ratio. By using a global neural network potential, stochastic surface walking global optimization and first principles validation, we constructed a thermodynamics phase diagram for Zn–Cr–O that reveals the presence of a small stable composition island, that is, Zn:Cr:O = 6:6:16 to 3:8:16, where the oxide alloy crystallizes into a spinel phase. By changing the Zn:Cr ratio from 1:2 to 1:1, the ability to form oxygen vacancies increases appreciably and extends from the surface to the subsurface, in agreement with previous experiments. This leads to the critical presence of a four-coordinated planar Cr2+ cation that markedly affects the syngas conversion activity and selectivity to methanol, as further proved by microkinetics simulations.

Abstract:The urgent need for efficiency improvement in the oxide-zeolite bifunctional syngas-to-hydrocarbon catalysis necessitates in-depth mechanistic insights into this reaction, especially for the initial syngas conversion over the oxide component, which remains poor. Herein, we comprehensively investigated syngas conversion over a representative ZnAl 2 O 4 spinel oxide with state-of-the-art solid-state NMR technologies. Notably, specific surface dual active sites for syngas activation with –Al IV –OH···Zn III – structure were unambiguously identified. More importantly, the dynamic evolution of the reaction intermediates and active sites during the reaction process was elaborated at atomic level by a series of double resonance and multi-dimensional correlation NMR experiments. In combination with in situ spectroscopic characterizations, we revealed the full cycle of the formate-methoxy-based pathway for the syngas-to-methanol conversion via synergistic interplay of the dual active sites. The in-depth atomic-level understanding of the catalytic mechanism will be beneficial to further rational design of high-performance catalysts for syngas conversion.

Abstract:Ceria-zirconia solid solutions with tunable surface oxygen vacancy have been used in the direct conversion of syngas into aromatics after coupling with ZSM-5 zeolite. A high selectivity of 83.1% to aromatics has been achieved from syngas with low H-2/CO ratio over Ce0.2Zr0.8O2/ZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst. The surface oxygen vacancy of Ce0.2Zr0.8O2 is supposed to facilitate the formation of oxygenates which act as intermediates for C-C coupling and aromatization on ZSM-5, and thus contribute to the well kinetic matching between C-O activation and C-C coupling over these two components of catalyst. The ceria-zirconia with abundant surface oxygen vacancies and enhanced lattice oxygen mobility intimately mixed with ZSM-5 zeolite with moderate acidity and crystal size play an important role in the catalytic performance.
High‐Efficiency and Long‐life Synergetic Dual‐Oxide/Zeolite Catalyst for Direct Conversion of Syngas into Aromatics

Abstract:Direct conversion of syngas to aromatics over metal oxide‐zeolite (OX‐ZEO) composite catalysts is a novel route for efficient utilization of carbon resources. To realize a high activity with considerable selectivity to aromatics and stability, the design of synergetic OX‐ZEO catalyst to meet complex kinetics still remains a great challenge. In this work, a synergetic dual‐oxide/zeolite catalyst was developed to tune the coupling between CO and H2 activation through active H species migration, by adopting ZnZrOx oxide with stable single‐layer Zn−O structure for H2 activation and CeZrOx oxide with abundant oxygen vacancies as the CO activation component. The ratio and the proximity of CeZrOx and ZnZrOx is essential for the catalyst activity and stability. The optimal catalyst 1CeZrOx‐2ZnZrOx/Z5@Si shows a superior catalytic performance with 75.6 % aromatics selectivity at a CO conversion as high as 57.5 %. After induction period, the catalyst exhibits excellent stability for 1100 h, keeping the high selectivity above 75 % with an average conversion of 43 %. This work will provide a new perspective to design a high performance and long‐life OX‐ZEO composite catalyst for direct conversion of syngas to high value chemicals. A synergetic dual‐oxide/zeolite catalyst composed of CeZrOx, ZnZrOx metal oxides and silica modified ZSM‐5 is developed for syngas conversion to aromatics, which exhibits long‐life catalytic performance with aromatics selectivity over 75 % at average CO conversion over 43 % during 1100 h of reaction. The interaction manner between CeZrOx and ZnZrOx is of vital importance in enhancing CO activation and improving the stability of the composite catalyst.

Abstract:The direct transformation of syngas into C-2-oxygenates (e.g., ethanol) is in great demand, but it is still challenging because of the low selectivity and poor catalyst stability. Here, we overcome the issues and report a zeolite-fixation methodology to strengthen the transformation. By employing the extensively investigated RhMn catalyst, the silicate-1 zeolite-fixed RhMn nanoparticles with core-shell structure (RhMn@S-1) exhibit high efficacy for the C-2 oxygenates production from syngas, giving oxygenate selectivity at 40.3% under CO conversion of 42.4% (C-2-oxygenate selectivity at 88.3% in the total oxygenates), which decidedly outperforms the previous catalysts in direct syngas-to-ethanol transformation. Multiple studies demonstrate that the rigid zeolite framework efficiently stabilizes the Mn-O-Rh delta+ structure, known as the crucial site for C-2-oxygenate formation. In the long-term test, the RhMn@S-1 catalyst exhibits constant C-2-oxygenate productivities with superior durability. This investigation demonstrates the powerful siliceous zeolite support in the C-2-oxygenate production, which has not been explored previously.
Tuning smaller Co3O4 nanoparticles onto HZSM-5 zeolite via complexing agents for boosting toluene oxidation performance

Abstract:Tunable smaller Co3O4 nanoparticles onto HZSM-5 zeolites were prepared by the addition of various rich-hydroxyl complexing agents. The physicochemical properties including the crystalline size, surface dispersion, reducibility and acidity of Co3O4 active component and the catalytic performance for toluene oxidation were extensively investigated by numerous characterization techniques and catalytic experiments. It was found that the smaller particle size and the better dispersion of Co3O4 nanoparticles on HZSM-5 zeolite after complexing agents addition lead to remarkable reducibility enhancement and higher abundance of surface acidity, which were proved to be the key factors for the elevation of toluene oxidation activity. Among all, the catalyst with β-cyclodextrin as the complexing agent (designated as Co3O4/HZSM-5/β-CD) exhibited not only the optimum catalytic activity, but also high catalytic stability under dry condition and good regeneration capacity under humid conditions. Based on the results of reaction order determination, a first-order reaction rate equation with respect to toluene concentration was derived under rich-oxygen atmospheres, which was in good accordance with the conclusion in previous research.

Enhancing Oxygen Activation Ability by Composite Interface Construction over a 2D Co3O4-Based Monolithic Catalyst for Toluene Oxidation

Abstract:Developing robust metal-based monolithic catalysts with efficient oxygen activation capacity is crucial for thermal catalytic treatment of volatile organic compound (VOC) pollution. Two-dimensional (2D) metal oxides are alternative thermal catalysts, but their traditional loading strategies on carriers still face challenges in practical applications. Herein, we propose a novel in situ molten salt-loading strategy that synchronously enables the construction of 2D Co3O4 and its growth on Fe foam for the first time to yield a unique monolithic catalyst named Co3O4/Fe-S. Compared to the Co3O4 nanocube-loaded Fe foam, Co3O4/Fe-S exhibits a significantly improved catalytic performance with a temperature reduction of 44 °C at 90% toluene conversion. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and theoretical calculation suggest that Co3O4/Fe-S possesses abundant 2D Co3O4/Fe3O4 composite interfaces, which promote the construction of active sites (oxygen vacancy and Co3+) to boost oxygen activation and toluene chemisorption, thereby accelerating the transformation of reaction intermediates through Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) and Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanisms. Moreover, the growth mechanism reveals that 2D Co3O4/Fe3O4 composite interfaces are generated in situ in molten salt, inducing the growth of 2D Co3O4 onto the surface lattice of 2D Fe3O4. This study provides new insights into enhancing oxygen activation and opens an unprecedented avenue in preparing efficient monolithic catalysts for VOC oxidation.

Abstract:Bifunctional catalysts composed of ZnCrOx oxide and ZSM-5 were widely used in syngas-to-aromatics (STA). The CO conversion on bifunctional catalysts was generally higher than that on oxide catalysts attributed to the pulling effect of zeolite, but the key factor for the improvement of CO conversion was still short of systematical explanation. In this work, the degree of nonstoichiometric spinel of ZnCrOx (ZxC) oxides was finely tuned through modulating the ratio of Zn/Cr, which could significantly influence the catalytic behaviors of ZnCrOx/ZSM-5 catalysts for the CO hydrogenation to aromatics. The increase of nonstoichiometric spinel corresponded to the increase of oxygen vacancies and the enhancement of Zn-Cr synergistic effect, which promoted the activation of H2 and CO, leading to a dramatic increase of CO conversion. The work revealed that the action of ZnO and oxygen vacancies was the key factor for CO pulling in ZnCrOx oxide and ZSM-5 catalyzed STA reaction.

Abstract:Despite wide studies demonstrating the versatility of the metal oxide-zeolite (OXZEO) catalyst concept to tackle the selectivity challenge in syngas chemistry, the active sites of metal oxides and the mechanism of CO/H2 activation remain to be elucidated. Herein, we demonstrate experimentally the role of Cr in zinc-chromium oxides and unveil visually, for the first time, the active sites for CO activation employing scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy using the volumetric density of surface carbon species as a descriptor. The ZnCr2O4 spinel surface with atomic ZnOx overlayer is the most active site for C-O bond dissociation, particularly at the narrow ZnCr2O4(110) facets constrained between the (311) and (111) facets, followed by the Cr-doped wurtzite ZnO surface. In comparison, the surfaces of ZnCr2O4 with aggregated ZnOx overlayers, pure ZnO, and the stoichiometric ZnCr2O4 exhibit a significantly lower activity. In situ synchrotron-based vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometric study on different temperature programmed surface reactions with isotopes of C18O, 13CO, and D2 validates direct CO dissociation over ZnCrn oxides in CO, forming CH2 and further to hydrocarbons if H2 is present and CH2CO intermediates in syngas. The activity of CO dissociation and hydrogenation over ZnCrn oxides correlates well with the syngas-to-light-olefins activity of ZnCrn-SAPO-18 composite catalysts as a function of the Cr/Zn ratio.

Abstract:Controlling the dispersion and position of metal active sites in bifunctional metal-acid zeolite catalysts is essential for achieving synergy between the metal and acid sites in tandem catalytic processes, but still challenging nowadays. Herein, we propose an approach to modulate the dispersion and position of Pt particles in ZSM-5 zeolite by employing various types of organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) in the one-pot synthesis procedure. Systematic characterizations show that the OSDAs mainly influence the encapsulation of the Pt precursor into the ZSM-5 zeolite crystallites during the hydrothermal crystallization process, resulting in discrepancies in the dispersion and spatial distribution of Pt sites in the final Pt-zeolite catalysts. Comparative studies on different Pt-zeolite catalysts show that the formation of subnanometer Pt clusters and the close spatial proximity of Pt and Br & Oslash;nsted acid sites in the zeolite efficiently promote the tandem dehydrogenation-alkylation process and enhance the production rate of ethylbenzene in the direct ethane-benzene coupling reaction. This study offers insights into the design and synthesis of bifunctional metal-zeolite catalysts for tandem catalysis.
