Abstract:Abstract Utilizing Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) observations from October 2014 to May 2023, we perform a detailed survey of magnetosonic waves generated in the solar wind (refer to as upstream MS waves), with frequencies near the proton gyrofrequency in the solar wind environment. The distribution of the solar wind‐generated MS waves has been carefully investigated, including in the solar wind and in the Martian magnetosphere by propagation. The results show that these MS waves are widely distributed below the Martian bow shock but are more concentrated below the magnetic pileup boundary, particularly in the subsolar region. The waves possess higher occurrence rates on the dayside with larger amplitudes; the occurrence rates also show dusk‐side‐preferred asymmetry. The Martian crustal magnetic field can prevent MS waves from penetrating into lower altitudes, while higher solar dynamic pressure benefits their penetration. The wave amplitudes exhibit a weak positive correlation with the solar wind dynamic pressure. These obtained global distribution features of Martian upstream MS waves observed by MAVEN are valuable to improve current understanding of the dynamic variations of Martian charged particles and the underlying contribution of wave‐particle interactions driven by MS waves.

Abstract:Martian mini‐magnetospheres contain whistler‐mode chorus waves potentially contributing to atmospheric escape, analogous to the Earth's inner magnetosphere. At Earth, the chorus waves have been found to originate from the near‐equatorial region spanning approximately 2% of the entire magnetic field line length. However, because of the lack of wave Poynting flux measurements, the Martian chorus source region remains unclear. By comparing the frequency dependence between observed wave power and modeled linear growth rates, we present the first attempt to explore the chorus wave source distribution along the Martian mini‐magnetospheric field lines. Our data‐to‐model comparisons support that these waves are not generated by a single source tightly confined near the magnetic strength minimal location but by intermittent or continuous sources spanning up to 40% of the entire field line length. These results imply that the Martian mini‐magnetospheres could have more active energy transfer processes mediated by whistler‐mode chorus waves than the expectation.

Abstract:Whistler-mode waves have been extensively observed and investigated in terrestrial space. In this study, we present the dynamic response of whistler-mode waves to different solar wind conditions in the dayside terrestrial space based on Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) data. Statistical results show that the occurrence rate, amplitudes, and corresponding electron temperature anisotropy of whistler-mode waves increase with P sw in the dayside terrestrial space, which is attributed to the compression of magnetic fields in these magnetosheath and outer magnetosphere. Furthermore, whistler-mode waves under the southward interplanetary magnetic fields (IMFs) show a higher occurrence rate than that under the northward IMFs, mostly corresponding to T e⊥ /T e∥ > 1, and have a higher occurrence rate during quasi-radial IMFs. These results present that whistler-mode waves in these magnetosheath and outer magnetosphere are also modulated by the solar wind as clearly as the inner magnetosphere. This work advanced our understanding in the solar–terrestrial interaction.

Abstract:Whistler mode waves are suggested to play a dual role in precipitation loss and acceleration of energetic electrons in Jovian magnetosphere. Using the combined wave data from Juno and Galileo, we constructed global maps of whistler mode waves in the Jovian inner magnetosphere (M‐shell < 20). Whistler mode waves are found to be extensively present over M‐shells from 6 to ~13, peaking at ~10, and extend to magnetic latitudes at least up to 50°. The whistler mode wave intensity varies from a few pT to ~100 pT, similar to the intensity level at Earth. The new finding on the latitudinal extension of whistler mode waves indicates their potential effects on electron precipitation over a broad energy range from ~100 eV to several MeV. The newly constructed whistler mode wave spectra are crucial for evaluating the accurate role of whistler mode waves in energetic electron dynamics in the Jovian inner magnetosphere.

Abstract:Chorus waves are naturally occurring electromagnetic emissions in space and are known to produce highly energetic electrons in the hazardous radiation belt. The characteristic feature of chorus is its fast frequency chirping, whose mechanism remains a long-standing problem. While many theories agree on its nonlinear nature, they differ on whether or how the background magnetic field inhomogeneity plays a key role. Here, using observations of chorus at Mars and Earth, we report direct evidence showing that the chorus chirping rate is consistently related to the background magnetic field inhomogeneity, despite orders of magnitude difference in a key parameter quantifying the inhomogeneity at the two planets. Our results show an extreme test of a recently proposed chorus generation model and confirm the connection between the chirping rate and magnetic field inhomogeneity, opening the door to controlled plasma wave excitation in the laboratory and space.

Abstract:Magnetosonic waves are an important medium for energy transfer in collisionless space plasma. Magnetosonic waves have been widely investigated in the upstream of the bow shock at Mars. These waves are believed to originate from pickup ions or reflected particles. By utilizing MAVEN spacecraft data, we have observed the occurrence of quasi-perpendicularly propagating magnetosonic emissions near the proton gyrofrequency in the Martian magnetotail region. These plasma waves are associated with a significant enhancement of proton and oxygen flux. The excited magnetosonic waves could possibly heat the protons through resonance and facilitate the ionospheric plasma escape. Our results could be helpful to better understand the Mars' magnetospheric dynamics and offer insights into possible energy redistribution between waves and plasma in the Martian nightside magnetosphere.

Abstract:Whistler-mode waves upstream of planetary bow shock are often referred to as "1-Hz waves" due to the center of their observed frequency range being at ∼1 Hz. A series of whistler-mode waves were observed upstream of the Martian bow shock by MAVEN on 2015 August 14, with unusually low frequencies centered at ∼0.4 Hz. These waves were accompanied (though not synchronized) by the significant flux enhancement of high-energy protons up to ∼10 keV. By analyzing the wave dispersion property and the wave–particle interaction condition, we find that the observed whistler-mode waves have the potential of resonating with protons of ∼1 keV with large pitch angles up to nearly perpendicular to the background magnetic field, thereby providing a feasible means of accounting for proton acceleration. Our results indicate the possible origin of energized protons in the Martian environment through the interaction with whistler-mode waves, and their potential relationship with the unique upstream conditions.

Abstract:Whistler mode waves are commonly observed inside mirror mode structures (MM-Ss) in the magnetosheath. Although MM-Ss have also been detected in the magnetosphere, there is no statistical study investigating the properties of whistler mode waves inside MM-Ss. Using Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) satellites, our present study identifies and statistically analyzes whistler mode waves detected inside MM-Ss in the Earth's magnetosphere. Both the observational evidence (bidirectional propagation) and theoretical analyses suggest that whistler mode waves are excited in the low-magnetic-field regions of MM-Ss. Statistical results indicate that whistler mode waves are frequently observed inside the MM-Ss in the dusk sector. Most of these waves (>70%) are in the frequency range of 0.1-0.4 f(ce) and have amplitudes less than similar to 50 pT. Moreover, most of them are observed to propagate in the direction both parallel and antiparallel to the background magnetic field, and their wave normal angles are typically less than similar to 40 degrees. Our study analyzes the properties and generation of whistler mode waves inside MM-Ss and reveals that MM-Ss are a possible source region in the Earth's magnetosphere. Therefore, our study provides new insight into the properties of whistler mode waves inside MM-Ss which are pervasive in space plasmas.
High-altitude gravity waves in the Martian thermosphere observed by MAVEN/NGIMS and modeled by a gravity wave scheme

Abstract:First high-altitude observations of gravity wave (GW)-induced CO$_2$ density perturbations in the Martian thermosphere retrieved from NASA's NGIMS instrument on board the MAVEN satellite are presented and interpreted using the extended GW parameterization of Yiğit et al. [2008] and the Mars Climate Database as an input. Observed relative density perturbations between 180-220 km of 20-40 % demonstrate appreciable local time, latitude, and altitude variations. Modeling for the spatiotemporal conditions of the MAVEN observations suggests that GWs can directly propagate from the lower atmosphere to the thermosphere, produce appreciable dynamical effects, and likely contribute to the observed fluctuations. Modeled effects are somewhat smaller than the observed but their highly variable nature is in qualitative agreement with observations. Possible reasons for discrepancies between modeling and measurements are discussed.

Magnetohydrodynamic Modeling of Background Solar Wind Near Mars: Comparison with MAVEN and Tianwen-1

Abstract:Combined with data assimilation methods, a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical model is an effective tool to explore the mechanism of space weather. As a driver of space weather, the dynamic development of stream interaction regions (SIRs) near the orbit of Mars is an area of active research. In this study, we use the interplanetary total variation diminishing (TVD) MHD model to simulate solar wind parameters and model SIRs near Mars from 2021 November 15 to 2021 December 31. In this model, the MHD equations are solved by the conservation TVD Lax–Friedrichs scheme in a rotating spherical coordinate system with six component meshes used on the spherical shell. Solar wind velocity, density, temperature, and magnetic field strength are given at the inner boundary due to the characteristic waves propagating outward. We compared modeled results with observations from Mars Atmospheric Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) and Tianwen-1 (China’s first Mars exploration mission). Statistical analysis shows that the simulated results can capture SIRs and are in good agreement with observations; moreover, the assimilated results based on the Kalman filter improve the accuracy of numerical prediction compared with simulated results. This paper is the first attempt to simulate SIR events combined with MAVEN and Tianwen-1 in situ observations. Our work demonstrates that using the MHD model with the Kalman filter to reconstruct solar wind parameters can help us study the characteristics of SIRs near Mars, improve the capabilities of space weather forecasting, and understand the background solar wind environment.

Abstract:Small-scale magnetic holes are common magnetic structures with a spatial scale always smaller than one thermal proton gyroradius ( ρ i ) in the turbulent planetary magnetosheath. However, the contribution of small-scale MHs to dissipating energy and transporting particles in turbulent plasmas is still unclear. In this work, we investigate magnetic fluctuations around small-scale MHs in the Martian magnetosheath and compute their spectral indices in the kinetic frequency range. Our statistical results show that the spectral index value gradually decreases from the bow shock to the induced magnetosphere boundary at the nightside of Mars. Small-scale MHs have an obvious influence on the spectral indices of the magnetic fluctuations by their high-frequency components. For most events, these MHs lead to a variation in the spectral index in the kinetic range, and such a variation can be very significant in more than 20% of events. Our results indicate that because of the existence of MHs, using the spectral index alone as a diagnostic sometimes is not enough convincing during the analysis of turbulence in planetary environments.

Abstract:Using the data sets of Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN and OMNI for the period 2014 October 10–2020 February 14 and the heliocentric distance of 1–1.66 au, we investigate the statistical properties of solar wind upstream of Mars for the first time. The key parameters, including interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), proton density (N), bulk velocity (∣ V ∣), and dynamic pressure (P dyn), are surveyed with regard to variations of solar activity level and heliocentric distance. We find that the parameters ∣IMF∣, N, and P dyn monotonously decrease with heliocentric distance. Both ∣IMF∣ and P dyn are generally stronger at a higher solar activity level (F 10.7 ≥ 70 sfu), while such activity has little relevance to N. In contrast, ∣ V ∣ basically keeps a median of about 370 km s−1 and is insensitive to the solar activity level and heliocentric distance. We also find that the IMF upstream of Mars at the higher solar activity level has a much smaller spiral angle in the inward sector; thus, IMF seems “straighter” than that in the outward sector, although that is not so for the inward sector of the upstream of Earth. Our statistical survey can be used as a reference for upstream solar wind of Mars at 1.4 ∼ 1.7 au, and could benefit the studies on solar wind as well as the Martian space environment.

Whistler waves in the quasi-parallel and quasi-perpendicular magnetosheath

Abstract:In the Earth's magnetosheath (MSH), several processes contribute to energy dissipation and plasma heating, one of which is wave-particle interactions between whistler waves and electrons. However, the overall impact of whistlers on electron dynamics in the MSH remains to be quantified. We analyze 18 hours of burst-mode measurements from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, including data from the unbiased magnetosheath campaign during February-March 2023. We present a statistical study of 34,409 whistler waves found using automatic detection. We compare wave occurrence in the different MSH geometries and find three times higher occurrence in the quasi-perpendicular MSH compared to the quasi-parallel case. We also study the wave properties and find that the waves propagate quasi-parallel to the background magnetic field, have a median frequency of 0.2 times the electron cyclotron frequency, median amplitude of 0.03-0.06 nT (30-60 pT), and median duration of a few tens of wave periods. The whistler waves are preferentially observed in local magnetic dips and density peaks and are not associated with an increased temperature anisotropy. Also, almost no whistlers are observed in regions with parallel electron plasma beta lower than 0.1. Importantly, when estimating pitch-angle diffusion times we find that the whistler waves cause significant pitch-angle scattering of electrons in the MSH.

Observations of occurrence rates of small-scale magnetic holes in the Martian magnetosheath

Abstract:Small-scale magnetic holes are usually sub -proton magnetic structures characterized by a significant decrease of magnetic field magnitude, and then restoring to the original background magnetic field strength. These structures are found to be closely related to energy conversion and particle acceleration, magnetic reconnection, and turbulence at the kinetic scale. Recently, these magnetic holes are reported in Venusian and Martian magnetosheath. With 4 -months data of MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN), the occurrence rates of small-scale magnetic holes in the Martian magnetosheath are investigated in this work. Our results show that smallscale magnetic holes are mainly detected in the plasma with the ambient magnetic field magnitude 4 <= B <= 12 nT, plasma bulk velocity range from 250 km center dot s (1) to 450 km center dot s (1), and plasma density 3 <= N <= 12 cm (3). In such environment, small-scale magnetic holes have a relatively higher occurrence rate when the background solar wind velocity is relatively faster and the background magnetic field is relatively weaker, and they are relatively concentrated in the background density between 6 similar to 9 cm (3). This parameter range may be related to the formation mechanism of smallscale magnetic holes. In addition, the occurrence rates of the small-scale magnetic holes near the center magnetosheath are higher than those in the flanks. These results indicate that the Martian magnetosheath is a potential source of small-scale magnetic holes.

Abstract:Whistler‐mode waves are electromagnetic waves pervasively observed in the Earth's and other planetary magnetospheres. They are considered to be mainly responsible for producing the hazardous radiation and diffuse aurora, which heavily relies on their properties. Density irregularities, frequently observed in the Earth's magnetospheres, are found to change largely the properties of whistler‐mode waves. Here we report, using Van Allen Probes measurements, whistler‐mode waves strongly modulated by two different density enhancements. With particle‐in‐cell simulations, we propose wave trapping caused by field‐aligned density irregularities (ducts) may account for this phenomenon. Simulation results show that whistler‐mode waves can be trapped inside the enhanced density ducts. These trapped waves remain quasi‐parallel and usually get much larger amplitudes than those unducted whistler waves during propagation away from the magnetic equator, and tend to focus at a spatially narrow channel, consistent with observations. Quantitative Analysis of the Vertical Interactions between Dust, Zonal Wind, and Migrating Diurnal Tide on Mars and the Role of Gravity Waves

Abstract:In the atmospheric system of Mars, vertical interactions are crucial, yet quantitative studies addressing this issue remain scarce. Based on simulations using the Mars PCM-LMDZ, we present the first frequency-domain quantitative analysis of the vertical interactions among Martian atmospheric dust, zonal circulation, and the migrating diurnal tide (DW1), employing Partial Directed Coherence (PDC) techniques to quantify the strength of associations between different variables. Our findings reveal a chain of influence where sub-seasonal-scale dust signals in the troposphere, through the Doppler effect of middle atmospheric zonal winds, transmit modulated energy to the DW1 in the upper mesosphere, thereby facilitating interlayer atmospheric interactions. The radiative heating from dust activities enhances the residual mean meridional circulation, which, under the influence of the Coriolis force, further accelerates the westerlies. Although gravity wave activity also contributes to the acceleration of the westerlies, its forcing generally remains below 5 m/s, which is relatively weak compared to the impact of intense dust activities in the warm scenario experiments (approximately 20 m/s). Overall, this study quantifies the interactions among atmospheric layers by means of PDC technology and analytically demonstrates how dust energy is transferred to mesospheric tides by shaping the zonal winds in between.
