Abstract:In recent years, photon routing has garnered considerable research activity due to its key applications in quantum networking and optical communications. This paper studies the single photon routing scheme in many-emitter disordered chiral waveguide quantum electrodynamics (wQED) ladders. The wQED ladder consists of two one-dimensional lossless waveguides simultaneously and chirally coupled with a chain of dipole-dipole interacting two-level quantum emitters (QEs) or atoms. In particular, we analyze how a departure from the periodic placement of the QEs due to temperature-induced position disorder can impact the routing probability. This involves analyzing how the interplay between the collective atomic effects originating from the dipole-dipole interaction and disorder in the atomic location leading to single-photon localization can change the routing probabilities. As for some key results, we find that the routing probability exhibits a considerable improvement (more than $90\%$ value) for periodic and disordered wQED ladders when considering lattices consisting of twenty QEs. This robustness of collective effects against spontaneous emission loss and weak disorders is further confirmed by examining the routing efficiency and localization length for up to twenty QE chains. These results may find applications in quantum networking and distributed quantum computing under the realistic conditions of imperfect emitter trappings.

Abstract:Topologically protected states are important in realizing robust excitation transfer between distant sites in photonic lattices. Here, we propose an efficient gap-protected transfer of photons in a scalable one-dimensional waveguide array by transporting the topological defect state of a Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model. The separation between neighboring waveguides is designed according to the Jaynes–Cummings model. As a result, the zero-energy eigenstate is topologically protected from the extended states by a constant energy gap, which leads to a fast and robust excitation transfer. We also show that the transport can be further sped up by the quasi-periodic oscillation induced by the non-adiabatic effect. This scheme has potential applications in scalable quantum information processing.
Collective photon routing improvement in a dissipative quantum emitter chain strongly coupled to a chiral waveguide QED ladder

Abstract:We examine the routing scheme of single photons in a one-dimensional periodic chain of two-level quantum emitters (QEs) strongly coupled to two waveguides in a ladder configuration. It is known that for a single-emitter chiral waveguide ladder setting, photons can be redirected from one waveguide to another with a $100\%$ probability (deterministically) provided the resonance condition is met and spontaneous emission is completely ignored. However, when the spontaneous emission is included the routing scheme becomes considerably imperfect. In this paper, we present a solution to this issue by considering a chain of QEs where in addition to the waveguide mediated interaction among emitters, a direct and infinitely long-ranged dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) is taken into account. We show that the collective effects arising from the strong DDI protect the routing scheme from spontaneous emission loss. In particular, we demonstrate that the router operation can be improved from $58\%$ to $95\%$ in a typical dissipative chiral light-matter interface consisting of nanowires modes strongly interacting with a linear chain of 30 quantum dots. With the recent experimental progress in chiral quantum optics, trapped QEs evanescently coupled to tapered nanofibers can serve as a platform for the experimental realization of this work.

Abstract:AbstractCombating the effects of disorder on light transport in micro- and nano-integrated photonic devices is of major importance from both fundamental and applied viewpoints. In ordinary waveguides, imperfections and disorder cause unwanted back-reflections, which hinder large-scale optical integration. Topological photonic structures, a new class of optical systems inspired by quantum Hall effect and topological insulators, can realize robust transport via topologically-protected unidirectional edge modes. Such waveguides are realized by the introduction of synthetic gauge fields for photons in a two-dimensional structure, which break time reversal symmetry and enable one-way guiding at the edge of the medium. Here we suggest a different route toward robust transport of light in lower-dimensional (1D) photonic lattices, in which time reversal symmetry is broken because of the non-Hermitian nature of transport. While a forward propagating mode in the lattice is amplified, the corresponding backward propagating mode is damped, thus resulting in an asymmetric transport insensitive to disorder or imperfections in the structure. Non-Hermitian asymmetric transport can occur in tight-binding lattices with an imaginary gauge field via a non-Hermitian delocalization transition and in periodically-driven superlattices. The possibility to observe non-Hermitian delocalization is suggested using an engineered coupled-resonator optical waveguide (CROW) structure.

Abstract:The dynamical evolution of light in asymmetric microcavities is of primary interest for broadband optical coupling and enhanced light-matter interaction. Here, we propose and demonstrate that the chaos-assisted photon transport can be engineered by regular periodic orbits in the momentum-position phase space of an asymmetric microcavity. Remarkably, light at different initial states experiences different evolution pathways, following either regular-chaotic channels or pure chaotic channels. Experimentally, we develop a nanofiber technique to accurately control the excitation position of light in the phase space. We find that the coupling to high-Q whispering gallery modes depends strongly on excitation in islands or chaotic sea, showing a good agreement with the theoretical prediction. The engineered chaotic photon transport has potential in light manipulation, broadband photonic devices, and phase-space reconstruction.

Abstract:The interplay between order and disorder in photonic lattices opens up a wide range of novel optical scattering mechanisms, resonances, and applications that can be obscured by typical ordered design approaches to photonics. Striking examples include Anderson localization, random lasers, and visible light scattering in biophotonic structures such as butterfly wings. In this work, we present a profound example of light localization in photonic crystal waveguides by introducing long-range correlated disorder. Using a rigorous three-dimensional Bloch mode expansion technique, we demonstrate how inter-hole correlations have a negative contribution to the total out-of-plane radiative losses, leading to a pronounced enhancement of the quality factor, $Q$, and $Q/V$ cavity figures of merit in the long-range correlation regime. Subsequently, the intensity fluctuations of the system are shown to globally increase with the correlation length, highlighting the non-trivial role of long-range disorder on the underlying scattering mechanisms. We also explore the possibility of creating ultra-high quality cavity modes via inter-hole correlations, which have various functionalities in chip-based nonlinear optics and waveguide cavity-quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract:Unintentional but unavoidable fabrication imperfections in state-of-the-art photonic-crystal waveguides lead to the spontaneous formation of Anderson-localized modes thereby limiting slow-light propagation and its potential applications. On the other hand, disorder-induced cavities offer an approach to cavity-quantum electrodynamics and random lasing at the nanoscale. The key statistical parameter governing the disorder effects is the localization length, which together with the waveguide length determines the statistical transport of light through the waveguide. In a disordered photonic-crystal waveguide, the localization length is highly dispersive, and therefore, by controlling the underlying lattice parameters, it is possible to tune the localization of the mode. In the present work, we study the localization length in a disordered photonic-crystal waveguide using numerical simulations. We demonstrate two different localization regimes in the dispersion diagram where the localization length is linked to the density of states and the photon effective mass, respectively. The two different localization regimes are identified in experiments by recording the photoluminescence from quantum dots embedded in photonic-crystal waveguides.

Abstract:We present and experimentally validate self-collimation in planar photonic crystals as a new means of achieving structureless confinement of light in optical devices. We demonstrate the ability to arbitrarily route light by exploiting the dispersive characteristics of the photonic crystal. Abstract:Advancements in photonics technologies have significantly enhanced their capability to facilitate experiments involving quantum light, even at room temperature. Nevertheless, fully integrating photonic chips that include quantum light sources, effective manipulation and transport of light minimizing losses, and appropriate detection systems remains an ongoing challenge. Topological photonic systems have emerged as promising platforms to protect quantum light properties during propagation, beyond merely preserving light intensity. In this work, we delve into the dynamics of non-classical light traversing a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger photonic lattice with topological domain walls. Our focus centers on how topology influences the quantum properties of light as it moves across the array. By precisely adjusting the spacing between waveguides, we achieve dynamic repositioning and interaction of domain walls, facilitating effective beam-splitting operations. Our findings demonstrate high-fidelity transport of non-classical light across the lattice, replicating known results that are now safeguarded by the topology of the system. This protection is especially beneficial for quantum communication protocols with continuous variable states. Our study enhances the understanding of light dynamics in topological photonic systems and paves the way for high-fidelity, topology-protected quantum communication.

Effect of lattice topology on photon statistics

Abstract:Coherent light traversing disordered media usually attains a random field both in amplitude and phase with independent Gaussian statistics and results in thermal light (associated with Bose-Einstein photon-number statistics) upon ensemble averaging. This is expected according to the central limit theorem, which dictates the addition of a large number of independent random variables leads to a normal (Gaussian) distribution. Here, we show that certain network topologies that light travels within preclude the central limit theorem and result in non-Gaussian statistics. We realize such networks in the form of evanescently-coupled waveguide arrays (photonic lattices) and obtain the photon statistics at the output by time gating and averaging over multiple realizations of disordered photonic lattices. The effect of lattice topology, however, only exists when the photonic lattice is endowed with chiral-symmetric eigenmode pairs a disorder-immune symmetry where the eigenmodes appear in pairs with oppositely signed eigenvalues and the coherent input field satisfies certain conditions. We specifically examine one-dimensional arrays of randomly coupled identical waveguides (off-diagonal disorder) arranged on linear and ring topologies. The emerging field exhibits super-thermal statistics (associated with modified Bose-Einstein photon-number statistics) only for ring lattices with even parity and linear lattices (independent of its parity), whereas input coherent fields traversing ring lattices with odd parity attain sub-thermal statistics. By controlling the relative phase of a coherent input field exciting two neighboring lattice sites, we also demonstrate a deterministic tuning of photon-number statistics, namely photon bunching, while maintaining the mean photon number fixed.

Abstract:Cavity quantum electrodynamics studies light-matter interactions at single quanta level. Chiral photon-emitter coupling in photonic structures is characterized as unidirectional propagation locked by the local polarization of light. However, to realize the strong interaction of photon-emitter with direction-locked propagation, which will bring novel applications in nonreciprocal quantum devices, has not been reported yet. Here, we propose the coupled photonic crystal and metallic nanoparticle structure, where through strong local field with high helicity, the rate of circularly polarized photons emitting into photonic crystal waveguide is one order larger than that without the nanoparticle and the linewidth of Rabi splitting spectra is about one-tenth of that with only the nanoparticle, both with $\sim$ 95$\%$ photons propagating unidirectionally, which can be utilized in directional quantum light sources.

Abstract:Uncovering how disorder affects light propagation is a key step to manipulating light transportation and localization utilizing engineered disorder in photonics. Herein, we study the disorder-induced localization, delocalization and inter-transition between them in the regions of photonic band gaps (PBGs) and their associated passbands of one-dimensional (1D) Photonic crystals (PhCs) under different types of disorder effect. We introduce two parameters to quantitatively evaluate how disorder effect can be exploited to tailor the localization and delocalization of light in 1D PhCs. Such parameters can clearly indicate the inter-transition between extended states and localized states. It is shown that both nontrivial and trivial disorder-induced transport scenarios exist depending on the types of disorder introduced to the otherwise periodic system. The disorder-induced band tailing, which is correlated with the disorder-induced redistribution of electric energy compared with periodic case, is crucial for observing these interesting disorder-induced light transportation scenarios. Our results might provide positive insight to the manipulation of light transmission in nanophotonics by engineered disorder.
Lattice topology dictates photon statistics

Abstract:Propagation of coherent light through a disordered network is accompanied by randomization and possible conversion into thermal light. Here, we show that network topology plays a decisive role in determining the statistics of the emerging field if the underlying lattice is endowed with chiral symmetry. In such lattices, eigenmode pairs come in skew-symmetric pairs with oppositely signed eigenvalues. By examining one-dimensional arrays of randomly coupled waveguides arranged on linear and ring topologies, we are led to a remarkable prediction: the field circularity and the photon statistics in ring lattices are dictated by its parity while the same quantities are insensitive to the parity of a linear lattice. For a ring lattice, adding or subtracting a single lattice site can switch the photon statistics from super-thermal to sub-thermal, or vice versa. This behavior is understood by examining the real and imaginary fields on a lattice exhibiting chiral symmetry, which form two strands that interleave along the lattice sites. These strands can be fully braided around an even-sited ring lattice thereby producing super-thermal photon statistics, while an odd-sited lattice is incommensurate with such an arrangement and the statistics become sub-thermal.

Band Gap Engineering and Controlling Transport Properties of Single Photons in Periodic and Disordered Jaynes-Cummings Arrays

Abstract:We theoretically study the single photon transport properties in periodic and position-disordered Jaynes-Cummings (or JC) arrays of waveguide-coupled microtoroidal ring resonators, each interacting with a single two-level quantum emitter. Employing the real-space formalism of quantum optics, we focus on various parameter regimes of cavity quantum electrodynamics (cQED) to gain better control of single photon propagation in such a many-body quantum optical setting. As for some of the key findings, we observe that the periodic setting leads to the formation of the band structure in the photon transmission spectra, which is most evident in the strong coupling regime of cQCD. However, under the resonant conditions with no losses, the application of Bloch's theorem indicates that the width of forbidden gaps can be altered by tuning the emitter-cavity coupling to small values. Moreover, in the disordered case, we find that the single photon transmission curves show the disappearance of band formation. However, spectral features originating from cQED interactions observed for single atom-cavity problem remain robust against weak-disordered conditions. The results of this work may find application in the study of quantum many-body effects in the optical domain as well as in different areas of quantum computation and quantum networking.

Chiral quantum optics in the bulk of photonic quantum Hall systems

Abstract:We study light-matter interactions in the bulk of a two-dimensional photonic lattice system, where photons are subject to the combined effect of a synthetic magnetic field and an orthogonal synthetic electric field. In this configuration, chiral waveguide modes appear in the bulk region of the lattice, in direct analogy to transverse Hall currents in electronic systems. By evaluating the non-Markovian dynamics of emitters that are coupled to those modes, we identify critical coupling conditions, under which the shape of the spontaneously emitted photons becomes almost fully symmetric. Combined with a directional, dispersionless propagation, this property enables a complete reabsorption of the photon by another distant emitter, without relying on any time-dependent control. We show that this mechanism can be generalized to arbitrary in-plane synthetic potentials, thereby enabling flexible realizations of re-configurable networks of quantum emitters with arbitrary chiral connectivity.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the transport properties of a weak coherent input field scattered by an ensemble of A-type atoms coupled to a one-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide. In our model, the atoms are randomly located in the lattice along the crystal axis. We analyze the transmission spectrum mediated by the tunable long-range atomic interactions and observe the highest-energy dip. The results show that the highest-energy dip location is associated with the number of the atoms, which provides an accurate measuring tool for the emitterwaveguide system. We also quantify the influence of a Gaussian inhomogeneous broadening and the dephasing on the transmission spectrum, concluding that the highest-energy dip is immune to both the inhomogeneous broadening and the dephasing. Furthermore, we study photon-photon correlations of the reflected field and observe quantum beats. With tremendous progress in coupling atoms to photonic crystal waveguides, our results may be experimentally realizable in the near future.

Abstract:On-chip chiral quantum light-matter interfaces, which support directional interactions, provide a promising platform for efficient spin-photon coupling, nonreciprocal photonic elements, and quantum logic architectures. We present full-wave three-dimensional calculations to quantify the performance of conventional and topological photonic crystal waveguides as chiral emitter-photon interfaces. Specifically, the ability of these structures to support and enhance directional interactions while suppressing subsequent backscattering losses is quantified. Broken symmetry waveguides, such as the nontopological glide-plane waveguide and topological bearded interface waveguide are found to act as efficient chiral interfaces, with the topological waveguide modes allowing for operation at significantly higher Purcell enhancement factors. Finally, although all structures suffer from backscattering losses due to fabrication imperfections, these are found to be smaller at high enhancement factors for the topological waveguide. These reduced losses occur because the optical mode is pushed away from the air-dielectric interfaces where scattering occurs, and not because of any topological protection. Directional router and controllable non-reciprocity transmission based on phase and pathway coherence

Abstract:A multi-channel quantum router with four nodal cavities is constructed by two coupled-resonator waveguides and four single cavities. We can achieve directional routing by adjusting the probability of photon exiting from the specified port to close to 100% based on multiple pathways between the photon from the incident port to the outgoing port in this hybrid system. Under the effect of phase difference between two classical light fields, the mutual interference between different pathways can be adjusted to destructive interference or constructive interference, which lays the foundation for the increase and decrease of the routing probability. The influence of different parameter values on single photon routing probability is also studied. By studying the analytic formula of probability amplitude, we get the physical mechanism of exiting ports being closed under certain parameter conditions and the phase relationship between the backward transmission and the original direction transmission of photons. Furthermore the non-reciprocal transmission and directional routing beyond chiral coupling can also be realized, which provides new possibilities for the study of quantum routers and new insights for the study of photon transmission characteristics.
